    Using numerical analysis, the phytosociological study of Hirschfeldia incana communities in mainland Greece allowed their classification into the Rapistro rugosi-Hirschfeldietum incanae ass. nov., a new subnitrophilous association of the Hordeion leporini alliance. Three subassociations were distinguished (anthemidetosum incrassatae, hedypnoidetosum creticae and cardarietosum drabae), the distribution of which seems to depend on latitudinal alteration of rainfall. The new association has its optimum growth in habitats with moderate human influence, specifically in abandoned cultivations and wastelands. With respect to its floristic composition, the Rapistro rugosi-Hirschfeldietum incanae is close to anthropogenic vegetation with a high degree of naturalness, particularly to the therophytic, subnitrophilous vegetation of the Thero-Brometalia (Stellarietea mediae) and the perennial, subnitrophilous vegetation of Carthametalia lanati (Artemisietea vulgaris).

    A recent special education legislation reform in Greece puts emphasis on the inclusion of pupils with special educational needs into mainstream schools. The purpose of the present study was to investigate knowledge of ASD among 67 mainstream nursery and primary classroom teachers, and evaluate the effectiveness of a half-day ASD awareness seminar in increasing their knowledge of the disorder. A self-report ASD Knowledge Questionnaire (ASD-KQ), developed for the purpose of this study, was used before and after the ASD awareness seminar. The results indicated a significant shift from low to moderate/high level of ASD knowledge among teachers with no previous training in special education and/or autism (58.7%), whereas this shift did not reach significance level in the teacher’s group with previous training (16.7%) after the seminar. The present findings have important implications for the development of training programmes of practising teachers.

    The diet composition of the Lycian salamander Lyciasalamandra luschani basoglui across both age and sex groups was studied. Specimens were collected from a small island in the Southeast Aegean Sea. The dominant prey group of juveniles consisted of Collembola, while Coleoptera dominated the diet of males and females. The number and size of prey items consumed by males and females of L. luschani basoglui were quite similar, while juveniles ate fewer items of much smaller size. The numerical abundance along with the four measures of the size of prey permitted discrimination among males, females and juveniles. Although discrimination between adults and juveniles is expected due to dissimilarity in body size, discrimination between males and females remains inexplicable despite their similarity in body size. Future studies should be focused on understanding how and why prey choice differs between sexes in L. luschani basoglui.

    Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the major pathogen responsible for acute bronchiolitis in infancy. However, evaluation of the relative importance of rhinovirus or multiple viral infections has been hampered by the lack of sensitive diagnostic methodologies. Therefore, in this study we used the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction for 11 respiratory pathogens to assess the etiology in infants with acute bronchiolitis and correlate it with clinical characteristics of the disease. Viruses were detected in 73.7% of patients. RSV was identified in 72.4% of virologically confirmed cases, rhinovirus in 29%, whereas multiple infections represented 19.5% of cases, most of which (69%) were combinations of rhinovirus with RSV. In a logistic regression model controlling for age, sex, birth weight, presence of fever, and day of disease on admission, the presence of rhinovirus was found to increase by approximately five-fold, the risk for severe disease. Multiple pathogens had a similar trend in the univariate analysis, which was eliminated in the multivariate model. Multiple virus cases were admitted to the hospital later in the course of their disease than unique pathogen cases, suggesting successive infections. In conclusion, rhinovirus is second only to RSV as a causative agent of bronchiolitis and is associated with more severe disease. The presence of more than one pathogen may influence the natural history of acute bronchiolitis.

    Background/Aim: Little is known about the correlation between contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) characteristics and pathological prognostic factors in breast cancer. The aim of this study was to explore the correlation between CEUS characteristics and pathological prognostic factors. Patients and Methods: A retrospective study with 34 malignant breast lesions was conducted. CEUS characteristics included qualitative characteristics (e.g. lesion’s enhancement degree and order, internal lesion homogeneity etc.) and quantitative characteristics (e.g. peak intensity, time to peak etc.). Also, pathological prognostic factors were included (e.g. tumor grade, estrogen receptor status etc.). Results: Blurred lesion margins were observed more often in tumors of high histological grade (p=0.01) and in estrogen receptor-negative tumors (p=0.049). Furthermore, perilesional enhancement was associated with positive Ki-67 expression (p=0.049), while heterogeneous internal sentinel lymph node enhancement was associated with malignant infiltration of the node (p=0.002). Conclusion: CEUS has the potential to provide a prevision of pathological prognostic factors in malignant breast lesions, helping in the better early patient management. © 2018 Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Arido.     Epithermally altered volcanic rocks in Greece host amethyst-bearing veins in association with various silicates, carbonates, oxides and sulfides. Host rocks are Oligocene to Pleistocene calc-alkaline to shoshonitic lavas and pyroclastics of intermediate to acidic composition. The veins are integral parts of high to intermediate sulfidation epithermal mineralized centers in northern Greece (e.g., Kassiteres-Sapes, Kirki, Kornofolia/Soufli, Lesvos Island) and on Milos Island. Colloform-crustiform banding with alternations of amethyst, chalcedony and/or carbonates is a common characteristic of the studied amethyst-bearing veins. Hydrothermal alteration around the quartz veins includes sericitic, K-feldspar (adularia), propylitic and zeolitic types. Precipitation of amethyst took place from near-neutral to alkaline fluids, as indicated by the presence of various amounts of gangue adularia, calcite, zeolites, chlorite and smectite. Fluid inclusion data suggest that the studied amethyst was formed by hydrothermal fluids with relatively low temperatures (similar to 200-250 degrees C) and low to moderate salinity (1-8 wt % NaCl equiv). A fluid cooling gradually from the external to the inner parts of the veins, possibly with subsequent boiling in an open system, is considered for the amethysts of Silver Hill in Sapes and Kassiteres. Amethysts from Kornofolia, Megala Therma, Kalogries and Chondro Vouno were formed by mixing of moderately saline hydrothermal fluids with low-salinity fluids at relatively lower temperatures indicating the presence of dilution processes and probably boiling in an open system. Stable isotope data point to mixing between magmatic and marine (and/or meteoric) waters and are consistent with the oxidizing conditions required for amethyst formation.

    Aims: This study provides a first approach to observing the alterations of the cell membrane lipids in the adaptation response of Listeria monocytogenes to the sanitizer benzalkonium chloride. Methods and Results: A thorough investigation of the composition of polar and neutral lipids from L. monocytogenes grown when exposed to benzalkonium chloride is compared to cells optimally grown. The adaptation mechanism of L. monocytogenes in the presence of benzalkonium chloride caused (i) an increase in saturated-chain fatty acids (mainly C16:0 and C18:0) and unsaturated fatty acids (mainly C16:1 and C18:1) at the expense of branched-chain fatty acids (mainly Ca-15:0 and Ca-17:0) mainly because of neutral fatty acids; (ii) no alteration in the percentage of neutral and polar lipid content among total lipids; (iii) a decrease in lipid phosphorus and (iv) an obvious increase in the anionic phospholipids and a decrease in the amphiphilic phosphoaminolipid. Conclusions: These lipid changes could lead to decreased membrane fluidity and also to modifications of physicochemical properties of cell surface and thus changes in bacterial adhesion to abiotic surfaces. Significance and Impact of the Study: The adaptation and resistance of L. monocytogenes to disinfectants is able to change its physiology to allow growth in food-processing plants.     ABSTRACT: The aim of the authors in this study was to determine the psychometric properties of the Greek adaptation of the High-Risk Pregnancy Stress Scale (HRPSS) in a sample of high-risk hospitalized pregnant women. The sample consisted of 133 high-risk pregnant women with gestational age from 9 to 37 weeks. Data were collected between February and June of 2014. HRPSS was “forward–backward” translated from English to Greek. Principal axis factoring with promax rotation was used to test the factor structure of the HRPSS. Measures of state anxiety (STAI) and depressive symptoms (EPDS) were used to assess the convergent validity of the HRPSS. Exploratory factor analysis suggested three factors: concerns of pregnancy, movement restriction, and isolation and restriction of external activities. Construct validity was confirmed by computing correlations between the HRPSS and constructions of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Internal consistency reliability was satisfactory (α = 0.813). The original factor structure of the HRPSS was only partly replicated. The results of the exploratory factor analysis suggested that a three-factor solution instead of a two-factor solution would be the most adequate. The HRPSS is an appropriate measure for assessing the levels of concerns regarding pregnancy outcome, movement restriction, isolation, and external activity restrictions in Greek high-risk pregnant women. © 2016 Taylor & Francis.

    Background: Three mutations in the low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) gene account for 49% of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) cases in Greece. Methods: We used the microelectronic array technology of the NanoChip® Molecular Biology Workstation to develop a multiplex method to analyze these single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Primer pairs amplified the region encompassing each SNP. The biotinylated PCR amplicon was electronically addressed to streptavidin-coated microarray sites. Allele-specific fluorescently labeled oligonucleotide reporters were designed and used for detection of wild-type and SNP sequences. Genotypes were compared to PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results: We developed three monoplex assays (1 SNP/site) and an optimized multiplex assay (3SNPs/site). We performed 92 Greece II, 100 Genoa, and 98 Afrikaner-2 NanoChip® monoplex assays (addressed to duplicate sites and analyzed separately). Of the 580 monoplex genotypings (290 samples), 579 agreed with RFLP. Duplicate sites of one sample were not in agreement with each other. Of the 580 multiplex genotypings, 576 agreed with the monoplex results. Duplicate sites of three samples were not in agreement with each other, indicating requirement for repetition upon which discrepancies were resolved. Conclusions: The multiplex assay detects common LDLR mutations in Greek FH patients and can be extended to accommodate additional mutations. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    Titan, Saturn's largest satellite, is subject to solid body tides exerted by Saturn on the timescale of its orbital period. The tide-induced internal redistribution of mass results in tidal stress variations, which could play a major role for Titan's geologic surface record. We construct models of Titan's interior that are consistent with the satellite's mean density, polar moment-of-inertia factor, obliquity, and tidal potential Love number k 2 as derived from Cassini observations of Titan's low-degree gravity field and rotational state. In the presence of a global liquid reservoir, the tidal gravity field is found to be consistent with a subsurface water-ammonia ocean more than 180 km thick and overlain by an outer ice shell of less than 110 km thickness. The model calculations suggest comparatively low ocean ammonia contents of less than 5 wt % and ocean temperatures in excess of 255 K, i.e., higher than previously thought, thereby substantially increasing Titan's potential for habitable locations. The calculated diurnal tidal stresses at Titan's surface amount to 20 kPa, almost comparable to those expected at Enceladus and Europa. Tidal shear stresses are concentrated in the polar areas, while tensile stresses predominate in the near-equatorial, midlatitude areas of the sub- and anti-Saturnian hemispheres. The characteristic pattern of maximum diurnal tidal stresses is largely compliant with the distribution of active regions such as cryovolcanic candidate areas. The latter could be important for Titan's habitability since those may provide possible pathways for liquid water-ammonia outbursts on the surface and the release of methane in the satellite's atmosphere.     Using numerical analysis, the phytosociological study of Hirschfeldia incana communities in mainland Greece allowed their classification into the Rapistro rugosi-Hirschfeldietum incanae ass. nov., a new subnitrophilous association of the Hordeion leporini alliance. Three subassociations were distinguished (anthemidetosum incrassatae, hedypnoidetosum creticae and cardarietosum drabae), the distribution of which seems to depend on latitudinal alteration of rainfall. The new association has its optimum growth in habitats with moderate human influence, specifically in abandoned cultivations and wastelands. With respect to its floristic composition, the Rapistro rugosi-Hirschfeldietum incanae is close to anthropogenic vegetation with a high degree of naturalness, particularly to the therophytic, subnitrophilous vegetation of the Thero-Brometalia (Stellarietea mediae) and the perennial, subnitrophilous vegetation of Carthametalia lanati (Artemisietea vulgaris).

    A recent special education legislation reform in Greece puts emphasis on the inclusion of pupils with special educational needs into mainstream schools. The purpose of the present study was to investigate knowledge of ASD among 67 mainstream nursery and primary classroom teachers, and evaluate the effectiveness of a half-day ASD awareness seminar in increasing their knowledge of the disorder. A self-report ASD Knowledge Questionnaire (ASD-KQ), developed for the purpose of this study, was used before and after the ASD awareness seminar. The results indicated a significant shift from low to moderate/high level of ASD knowledge among teachers with no previous training in special education and/or autism (58.7%), whereas this shift did not reach significance level in the teacher’s group with previous training (16.7%) after the seminar. The present findings have important implications for the development of training programmes of practising teachers.

    The diet composition of the Lycian salamander Lyciasalamandra luschani basoglui across both age and sex groups was studied. Specimens were collected from a small island in the Southeast Aegean Sea. The dominant prey group of juveniles consisted of Collembola, while Coleoptera dominated the diet of males and females. The number and size of prey items consumed by males and females of L. luschani basoglui were quite similar, while juveniles ate fewer items of much smaller size. The numerical abundance along with the four measures of the size of prey permitted discrimination among males, females and juveniles. Although discrimination between adults and juveniles is expected due to dissimilarity in body size, discrimination between males and females remains inexplicable despite their similarity in body size. Future studies should be focused on understanding how and why prey choice differs between sexes in L. luschani basoglui.

    Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the major pathogen responsible for acute bronchiolitis in infancy. However, evaluation of the relative importance of rhinovirus or multiple viral infections has been hampered by the lack of sensitive diagnostic methodologies. Therefore, in this study we used the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction for 11 respiratory pathogens to assess the etiology in infants with acute bronchiolitis and correlate it with clinical characteristics of the disease. Viruses were detected in 73.7% of patients. RSV was identified in 72.4% of virologically confirmed cases, rhinovirus in 29%, whereas multiple infections represented 19.5% of cases, most of which (69%) were combinations of rhinovirus with RSV. In a logistic regression model controlling for age, sex, birth weight, presence of fever, and day of disease on admission, the presence of rhinovirus was found to increase by approximately five-fold, the risk for severe disease. Multiple pathogens had a similar trend in the univariate analysis, which was eliminated in the multivariate model. Multiple virus cases were admitted to the hospital later in the course of their disease than unique pathogen cases, suggesting successive infections. In conclusion, rhinovirus is second only to RSV as a causative agent of bronchiolitis and is associated with more severe disease. The presence of more than one pathogen may influence the natural history of acute bronchiolitis.

    Background/Aim: Little is known about the correlation between contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) characteristics and pathological prognostic factors in breast cancer. The aim of this study was to explore the correlation between CEUS characteristics and pathological prognostic factors. Patients and Methods: A retrospective study with 34 malignant breast lesions was conducted. CEUS characteristics included qualitative characteristics (e.g. lesion’s enhancement degree and order, internal lesion homogeneity etc.) and quantitative characteristics (e.g. peak intensity, time to peak etc.). Also, pathological prognostic factors were included (e.g. tumor grade, estrogen receptor status etc.). Results: Blurred lesion margins were observed more often in tumors of high histological grade (p=0.01) and in estrogen receptor-negative tumors (p=0.049). Furthermore, perilesional enhancement was associated with positive Ki-67 expression (p=0.049), while heterogeneous internal sentinel lymph node enhancement was associated with malignant infiltration of the node (p=0.002). Conclusion: CEUS has the potential to provide a prevision of pathological prognostic factors in malignant breast lesions, helping in the better early patient management. © 2018 Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Arido.     Epithermally altered volcanic rocks in Greece host amethyst-bearing veins in association with various silicates, carbonates, oxides and sulfides. Host rocks are Oligocene to Pleistocene calc-alkaline to shoshonitic lavas and pyroclastics of intermediate to acidic composition. The veins are integral parts of high to intermediate sulfidation epithermal mineralized centers in northern Greece (e.g., Kassiteres-Sapes, Kirki, Kornofolia/Soufli, Lesvos Island) and on Milos Island. Colloform-crustiform banding with alternations of amethyst, chalcedony and/or carbonates is a common characteristic of the studied amethyst-bearing veins. Hydrothermal alteration around the quartz veins includes sericitic, K-feldspar (adularia), propylitic and zeolitic types. Precipitation of amethyst took place from near-neutral to alkaline fluids, as indicated by the presence of various amounts of gangue adularia, calcite, zeolites, chlorite and smectite. Fluid inclusion data suggest that the studied amethyst was formed by hydrothermal fluids with relatively low temperatures (similar to 200-250 degrees C) and low to moderate salinity (1-8 wt % NaCl equiv). A fluid cooling gradually from the external to the inner parts of the veins, possibly with subsequent boiling in an open system, is considered for the amethysts of Silver Hill in Sapes and Kassiteres. Amethysts from Kornofolia, Megala Therma, Kalogries and Chondro Vouno were formed by mixing of moderately saline hydrothermal fluids with low-salinity fluids at relatively lower temperatures indicating the presence of dilution processes and probably boiling in an open system. Stable isotope data point to mixing between magmatic and marine (and/or meteoric) waters and are consistent with the oxidizing conditions required for amethyst formation.

    Aims: This study provides a first approach to observing the alterations of the cell membrane lipids in the adaptation response of Listeria monocytogenes to the sanitizer benzalkonium chloride. Methods and Results: A thorough investigation of the composition of polar and neutral lipids from L. monocytogenes grown when exposed to benzalkonium chloride is compared to cells optimally grown. The adaptation mechanism of L. monocytogenes in the presence of benzalkonium chloride caused (i) an increase in saturated-chain fatty acids (mainly C16:0 and C18:0) and unsaturated fatty acids (mainly C16:1 and C18:1) at the expense of branched-chain fatty acids (mainly Ca-15:0 and Ca-17:0) mainly because of neutral fatty acids; (ii) no alteration in the percentage of neutral and polar lipid content among total lipids; (iii) a decrease in lipid phosphorus and (iv) an obvious increase in the anionic phospholipids and a decrease in the amphiphilic phosphoaminolipid. Conclusions: These lipid changes could lead to decreased membrane fluidity and also to modifications of physicochemical properties of cell surface and thus changes in bacterial adhesion to abiotic surfaces. Significance and Impact of the Study: The adaptation and resistance of L. monocytogenes to disinfectants is able to change its physiology to allow growth in food-processing plants.     ABSTRACT: The aim of the authors in this study was to determine the psychometric properties of the Greek adaptation of the High-Risk Pregnancy Stress Scale (HRPSS) in a sample of high-risk hospitalized pregnant women. The sample consisted of 133 high-risk pregnant women with gestational age from 9 to 37 weeks. Data were collected between February and June of 2014. HRPSS was “forward–backward” translated from English to Greek. Principal axis factoring with promax rotation was used to test the factor structure of the HRPSS. Measures of state anxiety (STAI) and depressive symptoms (EPDS) were used to assess the convergent validity of the HRPSS. Exploratory factor analysis suggested three factors: concerns of pregnancy, movement restriction, and isolation and restriction of external activities. Construct validity was confirmed by computing correlations between the HRPSS and constructions of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Internal consistency reliability was satisfactory (α = 0.813). The original factor structure of the HRPSS was only partly replicated. The results of the exploratory factor analysis suggested that a three-factor solution instead of a two-factor solution would be the most adequate. The HRPSS is an appropriate measure for assessing the levels of concerns regarding pregnancy outcome, movement restriction, isolation, and external activity restrictions in Greek high-risk pregnant women. © 2016 Taylor & Francis.

    Background: Three mutations in the low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) gene account for 49% of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) cases in Greece. Methods: We used the microelectronic array technology of the NanoChip® Molecular Biology Workstation to develop a multiplex method to analyze these single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Primer pairs amplified the region encompassing each SNP. The biotinylated PCR amplicon was electronically addressed to streptavidin-coated microarray sites. Allele-specific fluorescently labeled oligonucleotide reporters were designed and used for detection of wild-type and SNP sequences. Genotypes were compared to PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results: We developed three monoplex assays (1 SNP/site) and an optimized multiplex assay (3SNPs/site). We performed 92 Greece II, 100 Genoa, and 98 Afrikaner-2 NanoChip® monoplex assays (addressed to duplicate sites and analyzed separately). Of the 580 monoplex genotypings (290 samples), 579 agreed with RFLP. Duplicate sites of one sample were not in agreement with each other. Of the 580 multiplex genotypings, 576 agreed with the monoplex results. Duplicate sites of three samples were not in agreement with each other, indicating requirement for repetition upon which discrepancies were resolved. Conclusions: The multiplex assay detects common LDLR mutations in Greek FH patients and can be extended to accommodate additional mutations. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    Titan, Saturn's largest satellite, is subject to solid body tides exerted by Saturn on the timescale of its orbital period. The tide-induced internal redistribution of mass results in tidal stress variations, which could play a major role for Titan's geologic surface record. We construct models of Titan's interior that are consistent with the satellite's mean density, polar moment-of-inertia factor, obliquity, and tidal potential Love number k 2 as derived from Cassini observations of Titan's low-degree gravity field and rotational state. In the presence of a global liquid reservoir, the tidal gravity field is found to be consistent with a subsurface water-ammonia ocean more than 180 km thick and overlain by an outer ice shell of less than 110 km thickness. The model calculations suggest comparatively low ocean ammonia contents of less than 5 wt % and ocean temperatures in excess of 255 K, i.e., higher than previously thought, thereby substantially increasing Titan's potential for habitable locations. The calculated diurnal tidal stresses at Titan's surface amount to 20 kPa, almost comparable to those expected at Enceladus and Europa. Tidal shear stresses are concentrated in the polar areas, while tensile stresses predominate in the near-equatorial, midlatitude areas of the sub- and anti-Saturnian hemispheres. The characteristic pattern of maximum diurnal tidal stresses is largely compliant with the distribution of active regions such as cryovolcanic candidate areas. The latter could be important for Titan's habitability since those may provide possible pathways for liquid water-ammonia outbursts on the surface and the release of methane in the satellite's atmosphere.
