  • Authors: R. Batusek;

    This paper presents a novel method for determining a measure of dissimilarity of symbolic representations of speech segments. It is supposed that these symbolic representations can be completely derived from text, e.g. using a text analysis component of a text-to-speech synthesiser. An analysis is made to evaluate the correspondence of the particular symbolic features with the acoustic variability. A final dissimilarity measure is designed so as to maximise the correspondence with the selected acoustic measure. The designed measure is applied to the problem of sentence selection for the speech synthesis voice databases.

    Abstract Sites disturbed by mining were surveyed in the Czech Republic, central Europe. The sites included spoil heaps from coal mining, sand and gravel pits, extracted peatlands and stone quarries. The following main conclusions emerged: i) potential for spontaneous succession to be used in restoration projects is between 95 and 100% of the total area disturbed; ii) mining sites, if mining is properly designed and then the sites are left to spontaneous succession, often act as refugia for endangered and retreating organisms, and may contribute substantially to local biodiversity.

    Authors: Zuzana Parusniková;

    Abstract Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is becoming increasingly popular in western countries, with estimates of CAM usage as high as 40%. This has prompted a change of attitude of the medical establishment: the initial dismissal of CAM is being replaced by a drive to integrate CAM into the mainstream. Two possible explanations for this integration thrust are considered. Firstly, integration could be motivated largely by cognitive interest in CAM. Secondly, integration could be mainly power-driven, aimed at controlling the alternative movement and exploiting its capacity to make money. The second explanation seems more plausible, and is supported by data showing the paucity of research on CAM. The medical establishment does not sufficiently appreciate the challenge CAM poses, and does not consider its scientific appraisal to be a high priority. Instead, the allopathic community seems preoccupied with the opportunistic desire to protect its authority and social status. Such a discourse can become dogmatic, reluctant to revise critically the ‘accepted’ body of knowledge. Popper's critical rationalism could help to undercut dogmatism and encourage a critical, open-minded orientation of medical science.

    In this paper, we introduce the system for inferring implicit computable knowledge from textual data by natural deduction. Our background system is Transparent Intensional Logic (TIL) with its procedural semantics that assigns abstract procedures known as TIL constructions to terms of natural language as their context-invariant meanings. The input data for our method are produced by the so-called Normal Translation Algorithm (NTA). The algorithm processes natural-language texts and produces TIL constructions. In this way we have obtained a large corpus of TIL meaning procedures. These procedures are furthermore processed by our algorithms for type checking and context recognition, so that the rules of natural deduction for inferring computable knowledge can be afterwards applied. This paper deals with the effective implementation of the new Czech morphological analyser ajka which is based on the algorithmic description of the Czech formal morphology. First, we present two most important word-forming processes in Czech - inflection and derivation. A brief description of the data structures used for storing morphological information as well as a discussion of the efficient storage of lexical items (stem bases of Czech words) is included too. Finally, we bring some interesting features of the designed and implemented system ajka together with current statistic data.

    Abstract The Middle and Upper Palaeolithic sites situated within the system of Moravian and South Silesian valleys are key localities for understanding the patterns of seasonal mobility that enabled humans to exploit the North European Plain, and a possibility to distinguish the importance of the weather and climate for their subsistence practises. Loess accumulations that have covered the best preserved open air Palaeolithic sites in Central Europe display the climatic record covering at least 30,000 years. The sedimentological, microstratigraphical and geochemical record of three studied Upper Palaeolithic loess sites show significant changes, documenting increased precipitation towards the north. A progressive coarsening of the loess deposits during the Upper Pleniglacial, contrasting with the progressive fining toward the North European glaciation was detected. This methodological approach explains more precisely the context of formation processes connected also with human activity within the corridor between the North European Plain and the Danube Basin, through which a wide range of organisms, including humans and their prey species, were channelled.

    Authors: Pavel Mentlík;

    The direct expression of variable rock resistance and fault lines of different ages is characteristic for the deeply denuded relief of the Bohemian Forest. Three types of relief are typical. First, an extensive plateau covered with peat bogs spreading out in the central part of the area. Second, canyon valleys incised in the edge of the plateaus with torrential flows in rocky and stony riverbeds and finally, a rugged glacial relief with glacial cirques and a few relicts of periglacial processes in the vicinity of the highest summits. Geomorphological mapping supported by 10Be and radiocarbon dating showed that the culmination of the last glaciation in the Sumava range occurred during the Last Glacial Maximum , when valley glaciers appeared in some places. The cirque glaciers developed separately approximately 16,000 and 14,000 years ago. The recent findings suggest the presence of humans in the Sumava region since the Mesolithic period. The area was a source of raw material from the Middle Ages (gold and wood) for nearby populated regions and it was also a region of glass production. The most important recent change was connected with the end of the World War II when the predominant German population was expelled. The protection of natural heritage within the whole area is coordinated by the Sumava National Park , established in 1991.

  • Authors: R. Batusek;
