John Unsworth (2000) proposed a tentative list of scholarly primitives, and although he made a reservation that it was not meant to be exhaustive, one omission is striking, namely the exclusion of communicating. It is even more visible once one realises that all the examples he provides in the paper of comparison IBabble), linking (Blake Archive), or sampling (VRML visualisation of Dante’s Inferno) have the indispensable communication component attached to them. The aim of this presentation is two-fold. First of all, we will reclaim the role of communication as one of the fundamental functional primitives, crucial in all stages of the research workflow. To use Unsworth’s nomenclature, communication takes advantage of the additive characteristics of scholarly primitives and enters into combinations with all other scholarly primitives. Secondly, right after reestablishing the communication as a scholarly primitive we will swiftly proceed to problematise the notion of its universality for all disciplines through exploration of the specificity of scholarly communication in the humanities. We will achieve that using New Panorama of Polish Literature (NPLP.pl) as a case-study, outlining the relevant digital infrastructure for the humanities. It has long been suggested that communication should be seen as a fundamental element of the research workflow, rather than an activity running somewhat separate to the research practice (Latour and Woolgar 1986; Garvey 1979; Galison and Galison 1997; Nielsen 2011). Recently this idea wass reinforced by Hillyer et al. (2017) who describe open science as “opening of the entire research cycle” and include communication as one of its key elements. It means that dissemination is no longer perceived as the final stage of a research process but becomes an integral part of all scholarly activities. New digital methods and tools (Dallas et al. 2017), including electronic communication and social media (Kjellberg 2010), facilitate this process. allowing scholars to communicate and collaborate with each other and the wider audience quickly and efficiently at all stages of their work. This also includes intermediary results of the work, including raw and secondary data (Castelli, Manghi, and Thanos 2013). The incorporation of communication into all stages of the research workflow also means that choosing a certain communication strategy is obviously influenced by the perceived goal, but also the goal influences other phases of the research process. This feedback loop more precisely on the example of NPLP, a research infrastructure for literary scholars enabling the creation of extended, multimedia monographs and presenting scholarly arguments through linking text with image, visualisation, map and video content. Yet, Creating a new digital collection forces researchers to rethink how their work is presented, categorised and displayed . For instance in "Postmodern Sienkiewicz" collection (http://nplp.pl/en/kolekcja/postmodern-sienkiewicz/) authors divided their articles into shorter fragments with additional iconography allowing for non-linear reading and access through image-interface. These activities required additional work on the stage of data collection, analysis and interpretation. In conclusion we will tackle upon the question remains to what extent such communication practices are universal for all sciences and what could be treated as reserved for the humanities in the spirit of Diltheyan disctinction between explaining (in sciences) and understanding (in the humanities). {"references": ["Castelli, D., P. The National Research Council of Italy (CNR) is involved in the E-Cabin project, which aims to create a futuristic and intelligent cabin in order both to improve the well- being and satisfaction of passengers and to minimize the on-board waste by using advanced consumption control.

Submission ID: 157 H2IOSC (Humanities and cultural Heritage Italian Open Science Cloud) is a project funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) in Italy, aiming to create a federated cluster comprising the Italian branches of four European research infrastructures (RIs) - CLARIN, DARIAH, E-RIHS, OPERAS - operating in the "Social and Cultural Innovation" sector of ESFRI (European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures). H2IOSC facilitates collaboration among researchers from various disciplines in the social sciences and humanities fields. Its primary objective is to conduct data-driven research activities, by supporting several scientific workflows. Around the workflows selected by each participating infrastructure H2IOSC will build as many Scientific Pilots supported by digital data, tools and services, in the form of Virtual Research Environments, by using 8 high-performance computing data centers built by the cluster. Additionally, it aims to enhance the adaptation, implementation, and efficiency of existing facilities, based on the needs identified and expressed by the respective communities. H2IOSC will establish an onboarding process for each federated infrastructure within its framework, that will ensure the designated maturity threshold. Moreover, H2IOSC promotes training and dissemination activities to foster proficiency in the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and Open Science domain. Ultimately, H2IOSC seeks to drive the digital transformation of cultural and creative industries. The role of DARIAH.it in the project is to build the distributed infrastructure and federate its 8 nodes, elaborate the semantic framework to represent the knowledge gathered in H2IOSC in an interconnected way and develop the Scientific Pilots supporting the digital philology workflow. To do so, DARIAH.it will undertake a set of preparatory activities, including collecting and evaluating existing tools, datasets, and services relevant for the above task. A crucial part of this process is the semantization of selected data and metadata to promote interoperability of diverse resources; this involves the definition of standardized vocabularies and ontologies alongside the deployment of tools and workflows which actually implement the semantic transformation. The Pilots, presented as platforms or hubs, integrate domain-specific services, workflows, and interfaces. They operate on meticulously parsed data-subsets to facilitate the development of prototypes. Connected to this research and development activities, DARIAH.it will promote training, outreach, and dissemination efforts, as the funding of a Doctoral Scholarship in Digital Philology. DARIAH.it assumes the responsibility of designing, developing, and populating AEON, a service-provision oriented infrastructure interacting with the H2IOSC Marketplace and aligned with SSHOC and EOSC platforms. Ultimately, by participating in the project, DARIAH.it endeavors to provide an indispensable service that ensures the development and sustainability of humanities and human sciences research, as well as cultural heritage preservation, by facilitating the transition to digital approaches in research activities, overcoming the obsolescence of current sector-specific research product systems, and maximizing the potential impact of research communities by developing innovative approaches. Moreover, DARIAH.it establishes a foundation for interactions with the Italian Cultural and Creative industry and GLAM sectors, fostering collaborative research and development endeavors to enable the adoption of cutting-edge technologies. Simultaneously, it strengthens training programs and enriches content through valuable knowledge transfer activities. 

In this workshop, we discussed the European legal framework for data privacy and processing personal data (General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR). The workshop helped participants understand how their research is affected by the GDPR and what issues to pay attention to. The workshop began with a general introduction to the topics of data protection and the processing of personal data in the context of research, education and cultural heritage to summarize the pertinent articles of the GDPR. We then moved on to speak about the most common scenarios in which humanities' and social sciences' researchers encounter data protection issues. Examples of this included surveys, interviews and other research activities involving human participants, but also common academic scenarios like communication (mailing- lists, newsletters) and events (e.g. regarding picture and video recordings). Because researchers have to obtain legal consent from their participants in order to comply with the GDPR for many of their activities, the DARIAH working group ELDAH (Ethics and Legality in Digital Arts and Humanities) has developed a tool that provides standardized consent form templates for obtaining legal consent from human participants: The DARIAH ELDAH Consent Form Wizard (CFW). The CFW enables digital scholars and the wider research infrastructure community to quickly and easily obtain a standardized consent form that is legally valid in all of the European Union. The workshop participants were introduced to this tool and got a chance to test it by applying it to their own research practices. They used the tool to download templates to obtain research participants’ consent ; these templates can be adjusted to their specific needs in a few simple steps. Workshop participants had also a chance to give feedback on the CFW: to point out elements that are missing and suggest additional consent scenarios.

The development of open access and open science principles has made it possible to have access to a wide variety of content online, which in turn can be seen as a wealth of reference information for further research. Information extraction and data mining technologies play an essential role in this respect and we present several projects and initiatives that have been carried out in the context of the EU infrastructure DARIAH as well as several national and European research projects. We will also identify the conditions for an adequate re-use of technologies and content, with involves standardisation, policies and training. National audience
