    Authors: Ligkovanlis, Stefanos;

    Η παρούσα μελέτη έχει ως ερευνητικό αντικείμενο τη διερεύνηση τηςδραστηριότητας και της τεχνολογικής συμπεριφοράς των ομάδων κυνηγών-τροφοσυλλεκτών που έζησαν κατά το Ανώτερο Πλειστόκαινο στη βορειοδυτικήΕλλάδα. Κάτι τέτοιο επιχειρείται μέσα από τη συγκριτική τεχνολογική καιτυπολογική μελέτη τριών συνόλων τεχνέργων λαξευμένου λίθου της Μέσης και τηςΠρώιμης Ανώτερης Παλαιολιθικής Εποχής που προέρχονται από τους υπαίθριουςχώρους χρήσης Μεγάλο Καρβουνάρι, Μολόνδρα και Ελευθεροχώρι 7 στο νομόΘεσπρωτίας, σε συνεκτίμηση με την γεωλογική, τοπογραφική καιπαλαιοπεριβαλλοντική συνάφεια των χώρων αυτών.Η μελέτη αρθρώνεται σε 9 κεφάλαια. Στο Κεφάλαιο 1 ανατρέχουμε την ιστορία,αλλά και τα βασικά συμπεράσματα που έχουν προκύψει από τη μέχρι σήμεραδιερεύνηση των υπαίθριων θέσεων της Παλαιολιθικής Εποχής στη βορειοδυτικήΕλλάδα, επισημαίνοντας ταυτόχρονα τα ερευνητικά ζητήματα που παραμένουνανοιχτά. Στο Κεφάλαιο 2 παρουσιάζεται η μεθοδολογία συλλογής των εμπειρικώνδεδομένων, καθώς και οι ειδικότεροι στόχοι της. Στα Κεφάλαια 3, 4 & 5παρουσιάζονται τα αποτελέσματα της μελέτης της παλαιογεωγραφίας και τωνχαρακτηριστικών του υλικού πολιτισμού κάθε θέσης. Στο Κεφάλαιο 6 οι μαρτυρίεςγια τον υλικό πολιτισμό, τα υποκείμενα της δράσης και το χώρο στον οποίο αυτάδραστηριοποιήθηκαν, συγκρίνονται συγχρονικά και διαχρονικά και προτείνονταιερμηνείες για την εξήγηση των ομοιοτήτων και των διαφορών που προκύπτουν. ΣτοΚεφάλαιο 7 τα ευρήματα της μελέτης αντιπαραβάλλονται με και εντάσσονται στηνυπάρχουσα εικόνα για τις «οικιστικές» και τεχνολογικές επιλογές των ανθρωπίδωνκατά το Ανώτερο Πλειστόκαινο στη βορειοδυτική Ελλάδα, ενώ στο Κεφάλαιο 8συζητούνται βασικά σημεία των συμπερασμάτων που προκύπτουν από τη διαδικασίααυτή, με αναφορά στα δεδομένα για την Μέση και την Πρώιμη ΑνώτερηΠαλαιολιθική Εποχή στη νότια και νοτιοανατολική Ευρώπη. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό,γίνονται επίσης υποθέσεις για το είδος και το χαρακτήρα της καθαυτής ανθρώπινηςδραστηριότητας, κατά το Ανώτερο Πλειστόκαινο στην περιοχή της βορειοδυτικήςΕλλάδας. Στο Κεφάλαιο 9 ανακεφαλαιώνονται τα συμπεράσματά της μελέτης.Η παρούσα έρευνα αυξάνει τις μαρτυρίες για την Παλαιολιθική Εποχή όχι μόνο στηβορειοδυτική Ελλάδα αλλά και στη νότια Βαλκανική. Εμπλουτίζει τα δεδομένα γιατον υλικό πολιτισμό κατά το Ανώτερο Πλειστόκαινο στην Ήπειρο και αναθεωρείαρκετές από τις παλιότερες αντιλήψεις για το είδος της ανθρώπινης δραστηριότητας,και την χρονο-πολιτισμική της διάσταση. Ταυτόχρονα ανοίγει αρκετά ζητήματα γιαδιερεύνηση στο μέλλον κα τονίζει την ερμηνευτική αξία των υπαίθριων χώρωνχρήσης μέσω της προσεκτικής διερεύνησής τους, της σωστής διαχείρισης καιενδελεχούς μελέτης του αρχαιολογικού αποθέματός τους.

    Ο μεσαιωνικός κόσμος, βυζαντινός, δυτικός και ανατολικός, συνιστά πρόσφορο πεδίο μελέτης. Κρίσεις πολιτικές, κοινωνικές, οικονομικές, θεσμών, διεθνών σχέσεων κ.ά. έπλητταν τις κοινωνίες της εποχής, άλλοτε μεμονωμένα και άλλοτε καθολικά. Η θεματική των διαλέξεων επιχειρεί να προβάλει ποικίλες περιπτώσεις και φαινόμενα, όπως επίσης αποσκοπεί να αναδείξει, μεταξύ άλλων, τους τρόπους με τους οποίους αντιμετωπίστηκαν τέτοιου είδους κρίσεις από διαφορετικούς μεσαιωνικούς πολιτισμούς.

    This paper presents the creation of a thesaurus in the Maritime Heritage (MH) field. The suggested controlled vocabulary could improve methods for archiving oral sources, written accounts, imagery, 3D archeology, and other multimedia objects related to people and periods from ancient times to recent history. It has been created to cover the indexing needs for resources from Greek Maritime Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM) institutions hosted in a MH platform of the research infrastructure Intelligent Research Infrastructure for Shipping, Supply chain, Transport and Logistics (EN.I.R.I.S.S.T.). Its terms are derived from the collections pertinent to maritime activities. Although the construction of this vocabulary took into consideration specific data and their documentation, the goal is to go beyond ΕΝ.Ι.R.I.S.S.T. to assist MH documentation projects and professionals/researchers in organising and archiving MH data. The long-term ambition is to leave an imprint in improving MH data communication in general and contribute to promoting MH as a separate Cultural Heritage (CH) branch. The methodological approach was sensitive to the history of the artefacts, the shipping history and terminology, CH and general vocabularies, as well as the pre-existing practices. Terms and subject headings already existing in the vocabularies of reference were leveraged. The rules and standards of thematic indexing, monolingual and multilingual thesauri creation, and terminology standards were followed.

    AbstractWith pet ownership on the rise, millions of individuals are exposed to this environmental exposure. Although the subject has been largely studied, more evidence is needed to clarify the potential association of pet ownership with human health. The aim of this research is to study the potential association of pet exposure (any pet, cat, dog, bird, fish) with all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer mortality of older ($$\ge$$ ≥  50 years) European residents. To this end, a total of 23,274 participants from the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) were employed (median follow-up 119 months). All-cause mortality (5163 events), as well as cardiovascular (CVD) (1832 events), and cancer mortality (1346 events) were examined using Cox Proportional Hazards models for their relation with pet exposure at baseline. Stratified analyses were also performed by gender and for single or multi-person households. No significant association was observed for any of the pets with all-cause mortality on the whole sample and the fully adjusted models. In stratified analyses, bird exposure significantly increased the risk of all-cause mortality in women [Hazard Ratio $$(\text {HR})=1.23$$ ( HR ) = 1.23 ; 95% CI 1.04–1.44] as well as women living alone $$(\text {HR}=1.38$$ ( HR = 1.38 ; 95% CI 1.02–1.85). Cause-specific models revealed an increased risk of death for women bird owners for causes other than cancer and CVD $$(\text {HR}=1.40$$ ( HR = 1.40 ; 95% CI 1.05–1.99). In conclusion, bird ownership may be negatively associated with survival of older women in Europe.

    AbstractThe reactivities of various fatty monoacids and diacids on copper metal-containing surfaces were investigated through reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy. The formation of copper soaps is detected on pure copper surfaces, while copper and zinc soaps are simultaneously formed as mixtures on brass surfaces. Following the changes of acidic carbonyl and carboxylate infrared bands, it is shown that fatty monoacids C8, and C10 react with clean/polished copper and its zinc alloy within 2–4 hours, while those with chains > C12 react within 15–40 days. An explanation for the above results is offered on a molecular mobility basis, where liquid monoacids at room temperature favour higher reaction rates. Furthermore, it is argued that longer-chain FMAs allow for favourable orientation resulting in self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-type molecular packing on Cu surface, may explain the slower reaction. Fatty diacids, on the other hand, do not form any carboxylate products under these conditions. In light of this interesting result, it is argued that dicarboxylic acids may also pack as self-assembled layers on Cu and ultimately protect it. The implications for fatty organic remains in copper containers are discussed, with emphasis on the stability of archaeological copper metal and carboxylates serving as molecular markers for the presence of fatty monoacids as residues in archaeological containers. Besides, the utilization of fatty acids, based on the above behaviour in copper-based dosimeters, such as those used in the Oddy test, is suggested.

    An analysis of the place names of the coastal area of Crimea (Tauris) has been found in the description of Pallas (1795), along with the study of two or three historic «monuments» of the written and oral linguistic tradition of the Crimean Greeks, make it possible to establish a small vocabulary. This historic glossary provides several direct and indirect informations on the cultural heritage of the Greek speaking communities of Mariupol who live along with the Tatar-speaking Urums who have an ethnic Greek identity. An Urum-Ukrainian dictionary established by Alexander Garkavets has been appended herewith Le parler Grec (Rouméika) contemporain de la région de Mariupol (Azov, Ukraine) est la forme moderne de la langue parlée par les Hellénophones Roumeoi de la péninsule de Crimée. L’analyse des noms de lieu de la zone côtière de Crimée, que nous trouvons dans la description de Pallas (1795), complétée par l’étude de deux ou trois «monuments» de l’histoire linguistique de la tradition écrite et orale de la Crimée, permettent de dresser une liste d toponymes. Ce lexique historique contient de nombreuses indications, directes et indirectes, portant sur l’héritage culturel des Hellénophones de Mariupol ainsi que des Tatarophones Ouroum qui ont une identité ethnique hellénique. En Annexe on trouvera le dictionnaire Ouroum-Ukrainien etabli par Alexander Garkavets.

    Authors: Yiannis Papadatos;

    This thesis constitutes an attempt to approach and interpret a Prepalatial tholos tomb, Tholos Γ at the cemetery of Phourni, in Archanes, Crete, and Prepalatial mortuary practices in general, within the conceptual framework and the theoretical developments of the archaeology of death. The study follows four main stages. The first is the study of the evidence from Tholos Γ (presented in more detail in the Appendices of Volume 2), which allows the reconstruction of the entire history of the tomb, from its construction until its excavation. Thus, Tholos Γ, apart from being one of the very few well excavated and unlooted Prepalatial tombs, becomes the only tomb the history of which can be followed in relative detail. In the second stage, a synthesis of the existing theoretical approaches to the mortuary archaeological record is attempted, and the problems, potentials, advantages and significance of the archaeology of death are examined. The theoretical framework within which we approach Prepalatial mortuary practices is also presented. The third step is a description and discussion of the mortuary practices of Tholos Γ and other Prepalatial cemeteries, and particular emphasis is given to variations, differences and changes through time and space. The evidence presented and the conclusions made in the first three stages are used in the final stage of analysis, where an attempt is made to reconstruct the mortuary beliefs, and the horizontal and vertical organisation of Prepalatial society on the basis of the available mortuary evidence. Concerning the last two topics, we also discuss the Cycladic character of the Tholos Γ assemblage, and, more generally, the character of Creto-Cycladic relations during the early Prepalatial period. At the end of the thesis conclusions are made on the basis of what was discussed before, and possible issues for future research are investigated.

Of course, the concept of the state had not yet taken the form it has in modern times. States, these new political structures, often had no territorial continuity, as their borders were often changed and treated by their kings as family feuds. The Monarchical Regimes in Europe: from the 16th to the 18th century

    Authors: Yiannis Papadatos;
