Query refinement is the process of providing Web information seekers with alternative wordings for expressing their information needs. Although alternative query formulations may contribute to the improvement of retrieval results, nevertheless their realization by Web users is intrinsically limited in that alternative query wordings do not convey explicit information about neither their degree nor their type of correlation to the user-issued queries. Moreover, alternative query formulations are determined based on the semantics of the issued query alone and they do not consider anything about the search intentions of the user issuing that query. In this paper, we introduce a novel query refinement technique which uses a lexical ontology for identifying alternative query formulations that are both informative of the user’s interests and related to the user selected queries. The most innovative feature of our technique is the visualization of the alternative query wordings in a graphical representation form, which conveys explicit information about the refined queries correlation to the user issued requests and which allows the user select which terms to participate in the refinement process. Experimental results demonstrate that our method has a significant potential in improving the user search experience.

AbstractThe reactivities of various fatty monoacids and diacids on copper metal-containing surfaces were investigated through reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy. The formation of copper soaps is detected on pure copper surfaces, while copper and zinc soaps are simultaneously formed as mixtures on brass surfaces. Following the changes of acidic carbonyl and carboxylate infrared bands, it is shown that fatty monoacids C8, and C10 react with clean/polished copper and its zinc alloy within 2–4 hours, while those with chains > C12 react within 15–40 days. An explanation for the above results is offered on a molecular mobility basis, where liquid monoacids at room temperature favour higher reaction rates. Furthermore, it is argued that longer-chain FMAs allow for favourable orientation resulting in self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-type molecular packing on Cu surface, may explain the slower reaction. Fatty diacids, on the other hand, do not form any carboxylate products under these conditions. In light of this interesting result, it is argued that dicarboxylic acids may also pack as self-assembled layers on Cu and ultimately protect it. The implications for fatty organic remains in copper containers are discussed, with emphasis on the stability of archaeological copper metal and carboxylates serving as molecular markers for the presence of fatty monoacids as residues in archaeological containers. Besides, the utilization of fatty acids, based on the above behaviour in copper-based dosimeters, such as those used in the Oddy test, is suggested.

Conversational agents are reshaping our communication environment and have the potential to inform and persuade in new and effective ways. In this paper, we present the underlying technologies and the theoretical background behind a health-care platform dedicated to supporting medical stuff and individuals with movement disabilities and to providing advanced monitoring functionalities in hospital and home surroundings. The framework implements an intelligent combination of two research areas: (1) sensor- and camera-based monitoring to collect, analyse, and interpret people behaviour and (2) natural machine–human interaction through an apprehensive virtual assistant benefiting ailing patients. In addition, the framework serves as an important assistant to caregivers and clinical experts to obtain information about the patients in an intuitive manner. The proposed approach capitalises on latest breakthroughs in computer vision, sensor management, speech recognition, natural language processing, knowledge representation, dialogue management, semantic reasoning, and speech synthesis, combining medical expertise and patient history.

Of course, the concept of the state had not yet taken the form it has in modern times. States, these new political structures, often had no territorial continuity, as their borders were often changed and treated by their kings as family feuds. The pressures on honeybee (Apis mellifera) populations, resulting from threats by modern pesticides, parasites, predators and diseases, have raised awareness of the economic importance and critical role this insect plays in agricultural societies across the globe. However, the association of humans with A. mellifera predates post-industrial-revolution agriculture, as evidenced by the widespread presence of ancient Egyptian bee iconography dating to the Old Kingdom (approximately 2400 BC)(1). There are also indications of Stone Age people harvesting bee products; for example, honey hunting is interpreted from rock art(2) in a prehistoric Holocene context and a beeswax find in a pre-agriculturalist site(3). However, when and where the regular association of A. mellifera with agriculturalists emerged is unknown(4). One of the major products of A. mellifera is beeswax, which is composed of a complex suite of lipids including n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids and fatty acyl wax esters. The composition is highly constant as it is determined genetically through the insect's biochemistry. Thus, the chemical 'fingerprint' of beeswax provides a reliable basis for detecting this commodity in organic residues preserved at archaeological sites, which we now use to trace the exploitation by humans of A. mellifera temporally and spatially. Here we present secure identifications of beeswax in lipid residues preserved in pottery vessels of Neolithic Old World farmers. The geographical range of bee product exploitation is traced in Neolithic Europe, the Near East and North Africa, providing the palaeoecological range of honeybees during prehistory. Temporally, we demonstrate that bee products were exploited continuously, and probably extensively in some regions, at least from the seventh millennium cal BC, likely fulfilling a variety of technological and cultural functions. The close association of A. mellifera with Neolithic farming communities dates to the early onset of agriculture and may provide evidence for the beginnings of a domestication process.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the language of genres in History and Biology school textbooks in early secondary school (gymnasio), within the frame of systemic functional linguistics (SFL). More specifically, our aim is to analyze the lexicogrammar and semantics of twenty four texts from school textbooks. The study focuses on processes and participants (system of transitivity), lexical density, modality, grammatical metaphor (especially nominalization), temporality, causality and conjunctive relations. Differences in discourse of humanities and natural sciences, technicality and abstraction, and the co-occurrence (syndromes) of characteristics in different genres are considered in relation with the findings of relevant Greek and international researches. According to data analysis, there is an increasing tension from lower to higher grade and some differences between the two subject areas. The reconstruction of knowledge demands from early secondary pupils familiarization with grammatical forms of written language and with the way that they are deployed in school genres. Furthermore, it is suggested more specific analysis and adaptation of SFL tools in Greek language, given that they have implemented basically in English, and, finally, our remarks are extended to education and literacy under the rule of equal opportunities and emancipative knowledge.

Monte Carlo methods apply various physical models, either condensed history (CH) or track structure (TS), to simulate the passage of radiation through matter. Both CH and TS models continue to be applied to radiation dosimetry investigations on a micro and nano scale. However, as there has been no systematic comparison of the use of these models for such applications there can be no quantification of the uncertainty that is being introduced by the choice of physics model. A comparison of CH and TS models available in Geant4, along with a quantification of the differences in calculated quantities on a micro and nano scale, has been undertaken in this study. A sphere of liquid water was simulated, with an incident beam of monoenergetic electrons with kinetic energy between 50 eV and 10 keV. The energy deposition (typical of microdosimetry) and number of ionisations (typical of nanodosimetry), per incident particle, were recorded in a water sphere with diameter varying between 1 nm and 1 m. The simulations were repeated using the following physics packages: Livermore (CH), Penelope (CH) and Geant4-DNA (TS). Results indicated that substantial differences were present between calculated physical quantities, depending on the physics model, target diameter and ratio of the target diameter and mean track length of the incident electron. In the case of the smallest targets, the calculated energy deposition was higher when using the CH models, while the number of ionisations was typically underestimated. In larger targets the energy deposition was in good agreement for all physics models, however the number of ionisations was significantly underestimated by the CH approach, in some cases by almost two orders of magnitude. Regarding CH models, the parameter that had the greatest impact on the results was found to be the threshold of production of secondary particles; when this was minimised the CH and TS results showed the best agreement.
