    Authors: Köcher, Simone Swantje;

    A detailed understanding of the atomistic processes within a lithium ion battery is expected to facilitate the progress of energy storage technology, which is a key element for the exit from nuclear and fossil--fuel energy. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy can provide information about local electronic structure and dynamic properties of battery materials by addressing the nuclear spins of lithium (Li). Support by independent $\textit{ab initio}$ simulations is indispensable to meet the challenges presented by state--of--the--art electrode materials in NMR spectroscopy. In this thesis, the initial steps towards a novel, theoretical multi--scale method for retracing Li NMR experiments on battery materials are presented. First, the theoretical concepts of calculating NMR parameters are summarized. Then, the accuracy of NMR parameter simulations for Li and their dependence on different criteria are benchmarked. On the basis of the high--capacitance, disordered electrode material Li$_4$Ti$_5$O$_{12}$ (LTO), an approach for clustering the NMR quantities according to the local, crystallographic structure is established, reducing the number of $\textit{ab initio}$ NMR calculations. Theoretical sampling of the LTO configuration space demonstrates that the customary one--to--one assignment of experimental observables to crystallographic positions is inaccurate and misleading for complex materials. Finally, a kinetic Monte--Carlo (kMC) model, which simulates the atomistic dynamics, is combined with the NMR autocorrelation function (ACF), which provides the effective observables for spin--alignment echo (SAE) experiments. The simulated, static Li NMR parameters enter the kMC model together with atomic mobility parameters. The kMC sampling of the NMR ACF finally yields observables, which compared to experimental findings confirm the hypothesis of two domains of mobility on separate length and time scales in LTO. Additionally, a theoretical pre--screening approach for organic pH--marker molecules in aqueous solution is outlined. The pre--screening approach is demonstrated for biomedical applications, but might be transferred to energy research applications to study local reaction conditions of transient electrochemical processes. The various results demonstrate the synergy of combining theoretical simulations with NMR experiments. Together theory and experiment amplify the gained knowledge and make additional insights into the basic processes in a battery available.     Authors: Matthias Ritter; Martin Odening; Aaron Grau;

    Land market regulations are often justified by the assumption that activities of foreign and nonagricultural investors drive up land prices in countries with low land price levels. However, empirical knowledge about the dynamics of agricultural land prices across borders is sparse. Using the German reunification as a natural experiment, we study the effect of the former inner German border on the dynamics of agricultural land prices in East and West Germany. We apply a land price diffusion model with an error correction specification that estimates to what extent agricultural land markets are spatially integrated. A novel feature of our model is its ability to distinguish price diffusion within states and across state borders. We find that local agricultural land markets in Germany are linked by a long-run equilibrium relationship. Spatial market integration, however, does not hold among all counties in our study area. Regarding our main research question, we provide evidence for a persistent border effect given that the fraction of spatially integrated counties is larger within states than across the former border. Moreover, we observe non-significant error correction terms for many counties along the former border. From a policy perspective, it is striking to realize that even 25 years after German reunification, pronounced land price differences persist. It is quite likely that price diffusion through existing borders within the EU would take even more time given language barriers, different administrative procedures for land acquisitions, different tax systems, and information asymmetries between domestic and foreign market participants.

These elements are part of rehabilitation programs undertaken by the Ministry of Health of the Brazilian Federal Government, in partnership with the University of Brasilia, developed by the Laboratory for Applied Sustainability to Architecture and Urbanism, LaSUS, for the network of blood centers in Brazil. In this sense, this article discusses the presentation of the methods used in integrated environmental assessment of the building from the Blood Center of Ceará (HemoCE) to improve environmental quality and energy use of the building. Results obtained confirm the validity of these integration methods in the construction of guidelines for the rehabilitation design of the building, in order to enhance environmental quality and humanization of space. Finally, through the guidelines identified for the HemoCE building, intervention solutions were proposed for specific areas, according to its peculiarities, as well as for the building as a whole, based on sustainability and humanization.

    Hazardous weather has become a major cause of flight delays in recent years. With the development of satellite navigation systems, the study of flight-path optimization under hazardous weather conditions has become especially important. In this study, radar data were used as the basis for the initial flight-restricted area under hazardous weather conditions, and the Graham algorithm was used to delineate the dynamic flight-restricted area by comprehensively considering the hazardous weather boundary changes along with the speed and direction. Then, under the grid environment model, the range of influence, size, and distribution characteristics of the flight-restricted area was examined, and the path optimization model was created according to constraints related to the path distance, corner size, and number of turning points. An improved F-RRT∗ algorithm was developed to solve the model. The algorithm can overcome the problems of traditional path planning algorithms, such as strong randomness, poor guidance, slow convergence speed, unsmooth paths, and poor tracing smoothness. Finally, a simulation analysis was conducted on the Guiyang–Guangzhou route in China as an example. This study can address the drawbacks of existing research on route change and provide sufficient theoretical support and reference for the implementation of specific route change plans in the future.

    Die Verwendung von Gasdiffusionsschichten (GDL) in Brennstoffzellen ist ein wichtiger Aspekt, der die Leistung und Effizienz dieser Technologie beeinflusst. Eine gut konzipierte GDL kann die Leistungsdichte oder/und Effizienz einer Brennstoffzelle durch Regulierung der Verteilung von Gasen, Feuchtigkeit und Wärme maximieren. Im Rahmen des vom Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verehr (BMDV) finanzierten Vorhabens QM-GDL untersuchen 6 deutsche Forschungseinrichtungen mit zwei Industriepartnern Eigenschaften-Leistungs-Zusammenhänge von GDL‘s mit dem Ziel Messgrößen und Messmethoden für die Qualitätssicherung beim Markthochlauf zu sichern. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf Niedertemperatur-Polymerelektrolytmembran-Brennstoffzellen für automobile Anwendungen. Das Fraunhofer-Institut ISE und ICT untersuchen zudem den Einfluss der GDL-Eigenschaften auf die Zellalterung von Brennstoffzellen. In diesem Kontext werden am ICT Hochtemperatur-Polymerelektrolytmembran-Brennstoffzelle (HT-PEMFC) und Anionentauschermembran-Brennstoffzellen (AEMFC) betrachtet. In dieser Arbeit richtet sich das Hauptaugenmerk auf AEMFC. Hierbei sind insbesondere der Einfluss der GDL auf das Wassermanagement der Zelle und ein möglicher Einfluss auf die CO2-Toleranz zu betrachten. Das Wassermanagement der AEMFC unterscheidet sich fundamental von dem der PEMFC, da in der AEMFC Wasser an der Kathode verbraucht wird (O2 + 2 H2O + 4 e¯ -> 4 OH¯ ) und mit dem Ionentransport der Electroosmotic drag von Kathode zu Anode wirkt. Zudem ist es bekannt, dass AEMFC bei Kontakt mit CO2 in der Luft aufgrund einer verringerten Leitfähigkeit Leistungsverluste aufweisen.

    Recovering detailed interactions between humans/hands and objects is an appealing yet challenging task. Existing methods typically use template-based representations to track human/hand and objects in interactions. Despite the progress, they fail to handle the invisible contact surfaces. In this paper, we propose Ins-HOI, an end-to-end solution to recover human/hand-object reconstruction via instance-level implicit reconstruction. To this end, we introduce an instance-level occupancy field to support simultaneous human/hand and object representation, and a complementary training strategy to handle the lack of instance-level ground truths. Such a representation enables learning a contact prior implicitly from sparse observations. During the complementary training, we augment the real-captured data with synthesized data by randomly composing individual scans of humans/hands and objects and intentionally allowing for penetration. In this way, our network learns to recover individual shapes as completely as possible from the synthesized data, while being aware of the contact constraints and overall reasonability based on real-captured scans. As demonstrated in experiments, our method Ins-HOI can produce reasonable and realistic non-visible contact surfaces even in cases of extremely close interaction. To facilitate the research of this task, we collect a large-scale, high-fidelity 3D scan dataset, including 5.2k high-quality scans with real-world human-chair and hand-object interactions. We will release our dataset and source codes. Data examples and the video results of our method can be found on the project page.     Many Indonesian Chinese transnationals in Hong Kong consider themselves rootless and nationless. Wherever they have been, they were (and still are) at the periphery--they were the Chinese ethnic minority in Indonesia in the 1950’s, they were the returnees who had overseas quanxi (connection) that made them politically suspicious in the 1960’s, they were the new immigrants from the backward uncivilized China mainland to Hong Kong in the 1970’s. Even after decades of residing in Hong Kong, they are still not quite “local”. These Indonesian Chinese retain distinctive language and cultural practices. They are typically multilingual in varieties of Huaqiao Guoyu (Overseas Chinese Mandarin), Indonesian languages such as Bahasa Indonesian and Javanese, Chinese dialects such as Chiuchao, Hokkien and Hakka. They listen to and dance with Indonesian folk songs, wear Indonesian attire, enjoy Indonesian and Peranakan/Nyonya food, maintain close kinship ties with Indonesia and Singapore. Their self-perception of identity is an ambivalent topic that brought up past reconstructed memories and reinterpreted experiences. This paper takes their self-narratives as sites of analysis to explore their multiple voices and performativities in relation to issues of language and cultural ideology and identity. Ong (1999) exposes needs for observing the environs concerning transnationals, arguing that if “we pay attention to the transnational practices and imaginings of the nomadic subject and the social conditions that enable his flexibility, we obtain a different picture of how nation states articulate with capitalism in late modernity”. This paper examines the transnational practices of these individuals and the condition that enable their mobilities (or the lack of) both in physical and symbolic/social levels, and how these practices can be understood in times of sweeping sociopolitical changes with evolving relationship between individuals and the nation states.     Authors: Köcher, Simone Swantje;

    A detailed understanding of the atomistic processes within a lithium ion battery is expected to facilitate the progress of energy storage technology, which is a key element for the exit from nuclear and fossil--fuel energy. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy can provide information about local electronic structure and dynamic properties of battery materials by addressing the nuclear spins of lithium (Li). Support by independent $\textit{ab initio}$ simulations is indispensable to meet the challenges presented by state--of--the--art electrode materials in NMR spectroscopy. In this thesis, the initial steps towards a novel, theoretical multi--scale method for retracing Li NMR experiments on battery materials are presented. First, the theoretical concepts of calculating NMR parameters are summarized. Then, the accuracy of NMR parameter simulations for Li and their dependence on different criteria are benchmarked. On the basis of the high--capacitance, disordered electrode material Li$_4$Ti$_5$O$_{12}$ (LTO), an approach for clustering the NMR quantities according to the local, crystallographic structure is established, reducing the number of $\textit{ab initio}$ NMR calculations. Theoretical sampling of the LTO configuration space demonstrates that the customary one--to--one assignment of experimental observables to crystallographic positions is inaccurate and misleading for complex materials. Finally, a kinetic Monte--Carlo (kMC) model, which simulates the atomistic dynamics, is combined with the NMR autocorrelation function (ACF), which provides the effective observables for spin--alignment echo (SAE) experiments. The simulated, static Li NMR parameters enter the kMC model together with atomic mobility parameters. The kMC sampling of the NMR ACF finally yields observables, which compared to experimental findings confirm the hypothesis of two domains of mobility on separate length and time scales in LTO. Additionally, a theoretical pre--screening approach for organic pH--marker molecules in aqueous solution is outlined. The pre--screening approach is demonstrated for biomedical applications, but might be transferred to energy research applications to study local reaction conditions of transient electrochemical processes. The various results demonstrate the synergy of combining theoretical simulations with NMR experiments. Together theory and experiment amplify the gained knowledge and make additional insights into the basic processes in a battery available.     Authors: Matthias Ritter; Martin Odening; Aaron Grau;
