Appendix 14 provides a brief description and other data about 708 of the ASAGE sites documented in the ten Study Areas. It does not provide specific latitude / longitude coordinates, so as not to facilitate looting of these sites, although the spatial data are available to bona fide researchers.

Studies of place and landscape abound in the anthropological literature. This thesis aims at synthesising archaeological and anthropological approaches to explore how archaeological sites contribute to a sense of place and national identity in the Republic of Ireland. I take a multi-sited approach to discuss three archaeological places: the Hill of Tara, a prehistoric earthwork in County Meath, the Rock of Cashel, a Medieval ecclesiastical site in Country Tipperary, and Dublin city as a commemorative place for the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising. These sites provide a way to examine how archaeological places support intangible ideas of place that are also mediated through a phenomenological experience of tangible sites. In focusing on the way that narratives are woven into and of place, I examine how meta-narratives of the Irish nation are experienced, contested and integrated through archaeological places. In this thesis I contend that the temporal and material qualities of archaeological sites are core features that define the narratives told of place, and that narrative and place are mutually constitutive, each structuring the experience of the other.

This dataset is part of Sarah Colley's research project Mediated Messages: Archaeology Communication and Digital Technology (2010-2015) which investigates philosophical and ethical questions raised by using digital communication technology in archaeology and cultural heritage practice (e.g. Colley 2013, 2015). In 2011 Colley interviewed thirty Australian-based archaeologists and cultural heritage professionals about their use of digital technology and their communication with professional peers; television, radio and newspaper journalists; public relations and online media practitioners; public and government organisations; businesses; and members of the wider public including Indigenous community members and traditional owners. The research provides insights into e.g. remediation political economy, technology design, representation, authenticity and digital literacy. Changing communication technologies impact on peoples' understanding of and reactions to physical remains of the human past in ways that have broader social political and economic implications.

This dissertation examines cut marks on animal bone from Early Bronze Age Lerna in Greece to determine the material agent; a stone or metal tool. An experimental group of cut marks was produced to compare to the Lerna material. Both materials were analysed using a method yet to be used for cut mark studies, Micro-CT. Micro-CT was assessed whether it is an appropriate method for diagnosing cut marks on bone by comparing the results to SEM and light microscopy. In diagnosing the cut mark it was hypothesised that the profile and surface features will be important factors based on previous research (Walker and Long, 1977, Potts and Shipman, 1981, Greenfield, 1999, 2002, 2006). This study found that Micro-CT is excellent for showing the profile of a cut mark but not detailed surface features. Micro-CT also portrayed how the profile could vary, even within a single cut. For these reasons it was found profile alone is not enough to diagnose a cut mark and surface features are equally important. It was also found that comparing SEM, light microscopy, and Micro-CT was extremely beneficial as each technique has strengths and weaknesses. In regard to the Lerna material, it was found that three cut marks are almost certainly from stone tools and two cut marks are probably from metal tools. The findings add to evidence for the Bronze Age being a transitory period between stone and metal technologies.

This thesis presents the results of faunal analysis and historical research in order to understand the diet of the women who lived in the Immigration Depot (1848–1886) and the Destitute Asylum (1862–1886) at Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney, NSW. The faunal analysis included the examination of 5,436 specimens from the main building and trenches in the area of the kitchen. It focuses on three main areas: the variety of taxa in the assemblages, the distribution of taxa across the site, and the relative lack of Bos taurus bones. While many of the results supported the documentary record, such as the predominance of mutton consumed on the site, areas of dissonance are resolved through careful consideration of the two sources. This combination of archaeozoological and documentary evidence to argue that the diet was sufficient for sustaining life, but monotonous and poorly adapted to the needs of the women in the Destitute Asylum who lived there for long periods. This was not the result of a policy decision to punish or control the inmates, as may have been the case in other institutional settings, but rather the use of dietaries based on those designed for sailors and convicts. Institutions today continue to struggle with the same questions that were at the for in the 19th century – how can we feed people as cheaply as possible? Should the diet be part of the punishment or reform effort? Do people have a right to a basic quantity and quality of food? What role does nutrition play in the dietary? As well as adding to the growing literature on institutional diets and the archaeology of institutions in Australia, this study suggests that there are parallels between historical and modern institutional diets. The results show that a lack of official planning can damaging, even when punishment is not intended.

XRF (X-ray fluorescence) is a non-destructive technique used to determine the chemical composition of materials by measuring the fluorescent X-ray emitted from a sample (Renfrew, C. & P. Bahn, 2001. Archaeology: theories, methods and practice. London: Thames & Hudson, 3rd edn, 360–1). The raw data in Appendix 9 were obtained in a study of samples’ fabrics and glazes, which I undertook in conjunction with Dr Mark Eccleston (La Trobe University). Cluster Analysis and Principal Components Analysis of these data produced Figures 5:73‒6, which illustrate which fabrics and glazes are most similar, and therefore most likely to have shared similar raw materials and, potentially, production centres.

The predominant cultural metanarrative of transgender existence is that we sprang fully formed into being sometime in the 1960s, like Athena stepping out of Zeus’s skull. And yet in every corner of human history we find people who might fit modern definitions of ‘transgender’. This thesis does not seek to retrofit contemporary understandings of gender onto the past. Rather, it sheds light on queertrans antecedence, through the case of Harry Crawford in 1920s Sydney. Crawford was ostensibly on trial for murder, but his court case was more concerned with the social crime of gender transgression. He had been assigned female at birth but lived, worked, and married as a man. Much of the subsequent literary and academic work on Crawford has reproduced the assumptions, stigmas, curiosity, and censure of the 1920s, putting him on trial again and again. This thesis examines Crawford’s life and afterlives, his disallowed embodiment, and the cultural myths that were read onto him, by reading resistantly into and against court transcripts, papers and depositions, contemporaneous newspaper records, and secondary scholarship. Crawford’s case articulated a number of cultural anxieties around aberrant bodies, marginalisation, and the maintenance of social hierarchies. It continues to provide insights into undercurrents of paradox, power, self-definition, and historical futurity. This study also investigates possibilities for culturally respectful and harm-reductive approaches for future historiography. By mapping out the histories of people pushed to the margins, we may gain greater understandings of the ways in which cultural identity is defined both from within (i.e. from interior subjectivities) and from without (i.e. against the Other). The work of filling in historical gaps and silences also allows marginalised people to reconnect with a sense of cultural self, and perhaps to more fully realise our place in the universe.

Sweden has two valuable resources that can be used in landscape analyses. The first of these is the Board of Antiquities Ancient Remains GIS Database (FMIS) which catalogues around 1.7 million remains in 600 000 locations across Sweden. The second is the vast collection of historical maps, representing a 400 year period and covering most of Sweden's populated areas. This lecture will present these two sources and show examples of GIS analysis performed with data from them.
