    Authors: Dakovic, Natalija Sari;

    The concept of identity has been ever-present since humans have been living in societies. People have identified themselves with their work, their families, their church, or religion as well as with their Nation or state. All of these identities that people have adopted throughout time have had various impacts on how those people have seen and understood themselves as well as how they have orga nized themselves and acted. As such an influential concept it has been of particular interest to many artists, which have explored it in their own artworks and have also analyzed and re searched it as well. This research relies on the findings and works that have come before, such as Bachelor’s and Master’s Theses, research papers, lectures, ex pert interviews, articles, books as well as on artworks that are informative and relevant to the topic of Identity. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to the awareness of the impact of Identity, show its importance in the field of arts and explain how the author is playing with identity as an artist and a storyteller and to open a semiotic and symbolic discus sion of the author’s artistic work. The findings show the complexities of human identities and how particular indi viduals have creatively formed and shaped their identities in order to serve them. As our identities are constantly in the process of change, and while we continue to ask who we are, we should not forget who is it that we want to become.

    Authors: Nieminen, Topi;

    Uudet teknologiat otetaan vastaan usein tunneperäisesti, toiset ovat kiinnostuneita, toiset epäilevät. Uudet keksinnöt ja teknologiat oikein käytettyinä avaavat meille uuden maailman, tehostavat toimintoja, lisäävät luovuutta ja mahdollistavat asioita. Tämän työn tilaajat olivat sovelluskehitysyhteisö Viastar ja kulttuurialan toimija Carnivale. Tilaajia kiinnostavat uudet teknologiat kulttuuriperinnön sovelluksissa ja hankkeissa. Tämä kehittämistyö tutki ja tarkasteli, miten voimme paremmin hyödyntää uusia teknologioita sukututkimuksen apuna. Työssä tutkittiin, miten voimme yhdistää perinteisen ja DNA-analyysiin pohjautuvan sukututkimuksen. Tässä työssä käytiin myös läpi muita uusia teknologioita, joita voidaan hyödyntää sukuhistorian ja kulttuuriperinnön tallennuksessa, tutkimuksessa sekä myös yleisemmin kulttuurituotantojen tukena. Kehittämistyötä tehtiin tutkimalla ja kokeilemalla uusia teknologioita sekä käymällä läpi laajasti opinnäytetyön tekijän sukuun liittyviä sukututkimuksia ja niiden kautta esiin tullutta kulttuuriperintöä, vanhoja kuvia, karttoja ja paikkoja. Geneettisen sukututkimuksen avulla tutkittiin isä- ja äitilinjoja eri tekniikoilla ja jäljitettiin eri sukujen kulkureittejä menneiden vuosisatojen aikoina. Tässä opinnäytetyössä analysoitiin tekijän omasta suvusta teetettyjen DNA-testien tuloksia ja osoitettiin, miten ne toimivat käytännössä sukututkimuksen välineinä. Tässä työssä käsiteltyjä muita kulttuurituotannon tekniikoita olivat drone-kuvaus, lidar-kuvaus, virtuaali- ja lisätty todellisuus. Tutkimusmenetelminä käytettiin aineistotutkimusta, DNA-testejä, havainnointia, haastattelua ja kenttätyötä kokeilemalla käytännössä erilaisissä ympäristöissä uusia teknisiä välineitä. Työn tuloksina todettiin, että uudet tekniikat toimivat sukututkimuksessa ja kulttuuriperinnön tallentamisessa erittäin hyvin. Uudet tekniikat avaavat uusia sisältöjä ja osallistavat kulttuurin tuottajan sekä kuluttajan tuotantoihin syvällisesti. Toimenpide-ehdotuksena esitettiin, että sukututkimuksessa ja kulttuurituotannoissa otettaisiin rohkeasti uusia tekniikoita laajasti käyttöön toiminnan parantamiseksi ja tehostamiseksi. New technologies are often embraced emotionally: others show interest and others doubt. It is a fact that new inventions and technologies, when used properly, open up new worlds for us, streamline operations, increase creativity and enable things. This thesis was commissioned by the application development company Viastar and the cultural sector enterprise Carnivale. Both commissioners are interested in new technologies on cultural heritage applications and projects. The objective of this study was to explore and examine how new technologies can better be utilized in genealogy. The study explored how to combine traditional and genetic genealogy research. It also reviewed some other new innovative technologies that can be used on cultural heritage research and in cultural productions. The study was carried out by exploring and experimenting new technologies and going through extensive genealogy and cultural heritage materials, old images, maps, and places that have emerged through genealogy research. In terms of genetic genealogy, lineages have been studied using different DNA techniques and the pathways of different genera have been traced over the past centuries. The study analyzed the DNA research results from the author's own lineage and show how they work in practice as a tool for genealogy. Other cultural production techniques covered in this study include drone imaging, lidar imaging, as well as virtual and augmented reality. The research methods used were document analysis, observation, interview and fieldwork by experimenting new technical tools in different environments. The results indicate that the new technologies work very well in genealogy and in saving cultural heritage. New technologies open up new content and deeply involve producers, researchers and cultural consumers in productions. The thesis proposes that genealogists and cultural sector make widespread use of new technologies to improve and increase their efficiency.

    Although cultural heritage is all around us and an inseparable part of us, yet receiving funding to its preservation remains as a challenge for some of the organizations conserving it. The Foundation of Petäjävesi Old Church in co-operation with the National Land Survey of Finland is pursuing to build a World Heritage Center of Central Finland which would retain the cultural legacy of Central Finland for future generations. This project requires funding in order to executed. The main objective was to discover what type of online and offline communications encourages potential donators to provide financial support for the construction project. Qualitative research method was utilized by conducting semi-structured interviews with themes of cultural heritage, responsibility communications and fundraising for cultural heritage. A thematic analysis under these themes was performed. The process led to a discovery where the educational and overall value of cultural heritage and communication methods, such as different events and activities and media content with emotive, concrete and storytelling content should be implemented. The results revealed different fundraising methods where easiness and events played a key role. These methods were included in the communications plan and provided concrete actions which the Foundation of Petäjävesi Old Church can utilize in the pursuit of receiving funding for their cause and create a personal attachment of the potential donators to their cause.

    Tämä kuvataiteen opinnäytetyö käsittelee visuaalisen tarinankerronnan historiaa, metodeja ja luonnetta maalaustaiteen kontekstissa. Opinnäytetyö esittelee, miksi tarinoiden kertominen on merkityksellistä ja pohtii narratiivisuuden mahdollisuuksia ja rajoja maalaustaiteessa, sivuten myös kuvitusta ja sarjakuvaa. Opinnäytetyö esittelee esimerkkejä taidehistoriallisista kerronnan keinoista sekä nykypäivän narratiivisista taidemaalareista. Opinnäytetyön taiteellisessa osiossa toteutettiin maalauksen ja taidegrafiikan keinoin kerronnallinen teoskokonaisuus. Sekatekniikkamaalaukset kertovat kukin oman osansa tarinasta ja yhdessä muodostavat kertomuksen, jossa katsoja voi nähdä haluamansa loppuratkaisun. This thesis in fine arts explores the history, methods, and nature of visual storytelling in the context of painting. The thesis presents why telling stories is meaningful and considers the possibilities and limits of narrative within the art of painting, also touching on illustration and comics. The thesis presents examples of narrative methods from art history and today’s narrative painters. In the artistic section of this thesis, a narrative ensemble of artworks was realized using means of painting and printmaking. The mixed media paintings each tell their own part of the story and together form a narrative in which the viewer can see the denouement they want.

    Authors: Kouvo, Sofia;

    Opinnäytetyö käsittelee perinnenäytelmän uudistetun puvustuksen suunnittelua. Työssä tarkastellaan Tiernapoika-puvustuksen perinteen tunnistettavuuteen vaikuttavia puvustuksellisia elementtejä. Työ pohjautuu Tiernapoika-perinteen historian sekä esityksen alkuperäisen puvustuksen tärkeimpien tunnusmerkkien selvittämiseen. Laadullinen tutkimustyö perustuu Vuohijärven luonto- ja kulttuuritalon Tiernapoika-konsertin pukusuunnitteluprosessiin. Konsertista on tulossa uusi jouluperinne Vuohijärvelle. Tiernapoika-konsertin ensiesitys oli joulukuussa 2015. Tavoitteena oli selvittää, mitkä alkuperäisen puvustuksen elementit tulee säilyttää, jotta perinne on edelleen tunnistettavissa uudistetussa puvustuksessa. Lähtökohtana oli Tiernapoika-perinteen historian, alkuperäisen puvustuksen sekä uuden puvustuksen suunnitteluun vaikuttaneiden tekijöiden keskinäinen vertailu. Työn produktiivisena tavoitteena oli suunnitella ja toteuttaa vanhaa perinnettä kunnioittava, mutta samalla uudistettu puvustus. Työn lopputulokseen vaikuttivat työn tilaajan toiveet, esitystila, Tiernapoika-perinteen kulttuurihistoriallinen tausta sekä puvustukseen käytettävissä olleet materiaalit. Tekijä käyttää tutkimuksen tukena käsityötuotteen suunnitteluun kehitettyä tekijä-käyttäjämallia. Analyysimalli esittää puvustuksen suunnittelussa huomioon otettavat tekijät ja luo selkeät lähtökohdat suunnitteluprosessille. Analyysimallin avulla tekijä selvittää, kuinka valmis puvustus vastaa sille asetettuja tavoitteita. Tiernapoika-näytelmä edustaa vuosisatoja vanhaa suomalaista kulttuuriperintöä. Perinne kehittyy jatkuvasti sitä ympäröivän kulttuurisen ympäristön muuttuessa. Vahvan kulttuuriperinnöllisen taustan omaavan esityksen puvustaminen vaatii tekijältä taitoa nähdä perinteelle ominaiset piirteet sekä säilyttää ne perinnettä uudistettaessa. Työn tuloksena syntyi uusi Tiernapoika-näytelmän kulttuurihistoriallista perintöä kunnioittava puvustus. Puvustuksen suunnittelu- ja toteutustyö oli tärkeä osa uuden jouluperinteen syntymistä. Opinnäytetyö avaa perinnenäytelmän puvustuksen suunnitteluprosessia ja pyrkii nostamaan vanhan suomalaisen kulttuuriperinnön arvostusta. Tutkimusta voi hyödyntää myös muiden perinnenäytelmien puvustuksen uudistamisprosesseissa, vaikka opinnäytetyö keskittyy yksittäisen puvustuksen uudistamiseen. This bachelor thesis is a study about renewing the costumes for a traditional Finnish play. The thesis studies the elements which help in preserving traditional forms in Star Boys’ costumes. The study is based on a survey of the history of the Star Boys’ traditions and the most important features in the original costumes. This qualitative research is based on the designing process of the concert costumes of the Star Boys at the Vuohijärvi Nature and Culture house. The concert will become a new Christmas tradition at Vuohijärvi. The Star Boys concert premiered in December 2015. The objective of the study was to examine which elements of the original costumes need to be kept in order to maintain the recognition of the traditions. The productive objective was to design and execute renewed costumes which honour the old traditions. In the study, the author compares the costume design process, the history of the Star Boys’ traditions and the original costumes. The outcome of the project was influenced by the client’s expectations, the venue, the culture historical background of the Star Boys’ traditions and the materials available. The author uses an analysing method developed for the designing process of hand crafted products. The analysing method presents the aspects the designer needs to consider while creating a new design. It also gives a clear basis for the general designing process. With the analysing method, the author evaluates how the final costumes meet with the objectives given. The Star Boys play represents a centuries old Finnish cultural heritage. Tradition is forever evolving by the cultural environmental changes surrounding it. The designer needs the skill to recognise the traditional characteristics and preserve them, when renewing the costumes for a play with such a strong cultural and historical background. The designing and execution of the costumes had an important role in creating a new Christmas tradition at Vuohijärvi Nature and Culture house. The thesis reveals the designing process of the costumes in a traditional play and strives to arouse the appreciation of the old Finnish cultural heritage. Even though the thesis is a case study, it can also be used when costuming other traditional plays.

    Authors: Koskinen, Klaus;

    Löytöretki omaan ilmaisuun on opinnäytetyö, jossa käsitellään henkilökohtaista suhdetta kuvataiteeseen ja taiteellista työskentelyä. Opinnäytetyössä käydään läpi kirjoittajan omaa historiaa materiaalisen taiteen tekemisen ja digitaalisten ohjelmistojen parissa. Lisäksi tarkastellaan omaa taiteellista tekemistä ja kehitystä sekä kuinka työskentely on siirtynyt itseohjatun oppimisen kautta yhä enemmän digitaalisten ohjelmien käyttöön. Erityisenä tarkastelun kohteena on edellä mainittu siirtymävaihe materiaalisesta taiteesta digitaaliseen. Työssä esitellään, millainen kokemus on tehdä materiaalista taidetta verrattuna digitaaliseen taiteeseen sekä ohjelmien käytön opiskelua ja oppimista. Nuoruuden innostuksen, kokeilujen ja harjoitusten jälkeen 3D-mallintaminen ja animaatioiden tekeminen ovat valikoituneet omimmaksi kuvallisen ilmaisun alaksi. Itseohjattu oppiminen on aina ollut keskeisellä sijalla opiskelussa. Aiheita käsitellään omien teosten, kokemusten, pohdintojen, kirjallisuuden ja opinnäytetöiden avulla. Tämän lisäksi esitellään tarkemmin 3D-mallintamista polygoni- ja skulptaus-menetelmää käyttäen. Opinnäytetyö on ollut merkittävä osa oppimisprosessia. Sen lopputulos ei ole myöskään yksiselitteinen, vaan joukko havaintoja, jotka edesauttavat kehitystä kuvataiteilijana.

    Authors: Värri, Anna;

    The purpose of this thesis was to critically analyze the ways of how issues related to Instagram are explored in contemporary painting. By reviewing paintings addressing various phenomena related to Instagram, a theoretical framework for Instagram-related contemporary paintings was achieved. By discussing the recent works of contemporary painters like Jen Mann, Mauro C. Martinez and Emma Ainala, it was reviewed how artists have tackled phenomena that Instagram culture has birthed in the recent years. By using various articles and literary sources as a basis, themes like censorship, performativity in social media, and the relationship between identity and an online presence, are discussed. It was found that there exist common factors in the paintings addressing these themes, like strenuous attention to detail, aesthetic beauty and a quality of something being slightly off. Included in this paper is also a report of the artistic part of this thesis, a series of paintings that depict Instagram Stories. While also touching on similar themes that were the topic of this research, the paintings concentrate on one’s presence in social media and the habits of contemporary visual communication, which platforms like Instagram enable.

    Taiteellinen toimintani liittyy suoraan digitaaliseen ja maalaustaiteeseen. Tutkin digitaalisen kuvantamisen ja maalauksen suhdetta. Maalaan öljymaalauksia pikseliteknikkalla. Tarkastelen jokaisen pikselin väritaustaa ja siirrän tietokoneen kuvan fyysiseen muotoon kankaalle. Haluan näyttää maalaustaidetta uudelta puolelta. Päätin selvittää, miten teknologiat on vaikuttanut tekijän taiteelliseen työskentelyyni ja mitä muutoksia taiteessa on tapahtunut. Uusien, nykyaikaisten teknologioiden nopean kasvun ja kehityksen vuoksi on tapahtunut jyrkkiä muutoksia kaikilla ihmisen toiminnan osa-alueilla, jotka puolestaan ovat vaikuttaneet koko ihmiskunnan ympäristöön. Tekniikan kehitys koski taiteellista ympäristöä, minkä seurauksena syntyi yksi uusista taiteen ilmiöistä - digitaalinen taide. My artistic activities are directly related to digital and painting art. I’m researching the relationship between digital imaging and painting. I paint oil paintings with a pixel technician. I look at the color background of each pixel and transfer the computer image to a physical format on a canvas. I want to show the new side of painting. I decided to find out how technologies have affected the author’s artistic work and what changes have taken place in the art. Due to the rapid growth and development of new, modern technologies, there have been drastic changes in all aspects of human activity, which in turn have affected the entire human environment. The development of technology concerned the artistic environment, resulting in one of the new artistic phenomena - digital art.

    Tässä opinnäytetyöni kirjallisessa osiossa tutkin perinteikkään ja digitaalisen taidemuodon välistä rajavyöhykettä. Koen, että näiden kahden ulottuvuuden välillä täytyy olla jokin harmaa vyöhyke. Tätä vyöhykettä lähden kirjallisessa opinnäytteessäni kartoittamaan. Opinnäytetyöni toimii psykologisena, henkilökohtaisena katsauksena itseeni ja suhteeseeni jatkuvasti muuttuvaa ympäristöä kohtaan. Tutkin alati kasvavaa teknologian määrää ihmiselämässä ja sen tuomaa vaikutusta yksilön mieleen. Hyödynsin saamiani ideoita muuan muassa tuhansia tunteja vietetystä ajasta videopelimaailmoissa sekä pelien graafisesta ulkoasusta. Kirjallinen osioni on ennen kaikkea työpäiväkirjamainen raportti fyysisen työni prosessista. Käyn läpi kaikkea materiaalista työvälineisiin ja hetkellisiin tunnetiloihin, ongelmiin ja onnistumisiin. Sain huomioida paljon uusia asioita työtä tehdessäni. En ollut aiemmin tottunut tämän kokoluokan projekteihin. Ihmisen kokoista hahmoa tehdessäni ajankäytön suhteen tuli opittua paljon. Mikä tärkeintä, projektini vilisi uusia oivalluksia, joita voi käyttää hyväksi jatkoa ajatellen.

    Authors: Dakovic, Natalija Sari;

    Authors: Nieminen, Topi;

    Löytöretki omaan ilmaisuun on opinnäytetyö, jossa käsitellään henkilökohtaista suhdetta kuvataiteeseen ja taiteellista työskentelyä. Opinnäytetyössä käydään läpi kirjoittajan omaa historiaa materiaalisen taiteen tekemisen ja digitaalisten ohjelmistojen parissa. Lisäksi tarkastellaan omaa taiteellista tekemistä ja kehitystä sekä kuinka työskentely on siirtynyt itseohjatun oppimisen kautta yhä enemmän digitaalisten ohjelmien käyttöön. Erityisenä tarkastelun kohteena on edellä mainittu siirtymävaihe materiaalisesta taiteesta digitaaliseen. Työssä esitellään, millainen kokemus on tehdä materiaalista taidetta verrattuna digitaaliseen taiteeseen sekä ohjelmien käytön opiskelua ja oppimista. Nuoruuden innostuksen, kokeilujen ja harjoitusten jälkeen 3D-mallintaminen ja animaatioiden tekeminen ovat valikoituneet omimmaksi kuvallisen ilmaisun alaksi. Itseohjattu oppiminen on aina ollut keskeisellä sijalla opiskelussa. Aiheita käsitellään omien teosten, kokemusten, pohdintojen, kirjallisuuden ja opinnäytetöiden avulla. Tämän lisäksi esitellään tarkemmin 3D-mallintamista polygoni- ja skulptaus-menetelmää käyttäen. Opinnäytetyö on ollut merkittävä osa oppimisprosessia. Sen lopputulos ei ole myöskään yksiselitteinen, vaan joukko havaintoja, jotka edesauttavat kehitystä kuvataiteilijana.
