    The stable isotope records for mid- and late- Holocene are based on two stalagmites, VEAJ collected in Alfredo Jahn cave and VECA collected in Caripe Cave, respectively. Both caves are located in northern Venezuela, adjacent to Cariaco Basin. The ẟ18O record was interpreted as a proxy for the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) to our study sites, and the ẟ13C record as a proxy for vegetation changes, as discussed in the paper 'Atlantic ITCZ variability during the Holocene based on high-resolution speleothem isotope records from northern Venezuela' (Medina et al., 2023). The ẟ18O and ẟ13C analyses were performed at the Stable Isotope Laboratory at the Institute of Geoscience of the University of São Paulo (Brazil) using a Thermo-Finnigan Delta Plus Advantage mass spectrometer. ẟ-notation in per mil units (‰) was used to express the sample isotopic ratios deviation from the Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB) standard. Approximately 200 μg of CaCO3-powder subsamples for ẟ18O and ẟ13C stable isotopic analyses were collected using a manually controlled Sherline 5400 milling at a resolution of 0.4 mm for VEAJ and 0.5 mm for VECA. The ẟ18O and ẟ13C isotopic profiles of VEAJ-base, VEAJ-top left and VEAJ-top right are based on 530, 310 and 250 samples, respectively. VECA isotopic profiles consist of 670 samples. Since VEAJ-top left overlaps with some sections of the -top right record, we merged them through normalization (i.e., by subtracting the mean and dividing by the standard deviation) of the data inside the overlapping period, averaging both series and then reconstructing the shorter time series with the mean and standard deviation of the longer one. The geochronology was established by means of the U/Th dating method, using a multicollector inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometers (MC-ICP-MS-Thermo-Finnigan NEPTUNE) at the Institute of Global Environmental Change, Xi'an Jiaotong University (China). The sampling for the U/Th dating was performed by extracting ~0.100 g of powdered carbonate with a handheld drill of the least porous and colored, most traceable layers along or at the side of each speleothem growth axis. A total of 42 U/Th ages were used to construct the age model for VEAJ and 25 for VECA, yielding an mean temporal stable isotope sampling resolutions of 3 and 23 years for VEAJ-base & top-composite, respectively, and 1.5 years for VECA. Some age reversals along the stalagmites were flagged as outliers using Bayesian statistics, and consequently removed from the age models. For other age inversions, an iterative procedure was applied to increase the range of uncertainty in order to fulfill the monotonicity criterion (Scholz and Hoffmann, 2011). The two different distance columns correspond to the sampling depths for the two adjacent stalagmites: the top left (VEAJ-top left) and top right (VEAJ-top right), that grew on the top of the lower section (VEAJ-base).

    We investigate the magnetic properties and chemical composition of remagnetised carbonate rocks in South America. These rocks play a crucial role in understanding past climates and the behaviour of Earth's magnetic field. Unfortunately, the primary remanence of these rocks is often altered by secondary components in a process known as remagnetisation. In South America, we observe evidence of a continent-wide remagnetisation event in Neoproterozoic carbonates from sedimentary basins separated by significant distances. To shed further light on this phenomenon, we employ both traditional macroscopic rock magnetic analysis and advanced synchrotron-based nano/micro imaging and chemical analysis techniques.

    The Second Annual Meeting of the European Virus Bioinformatics Center (EVBC), held in Utrecht, Netherlands, focused on computational approaches in virology, with topics including (but not limited to) virus discovery, diagnostics, (meta-)genomics, modeling, epidemiology, molecular structure, evolution, and viral ecology. The goals of the Second Annual Meeting were threefold: (i) to bring together virologists and bioinformaticians from across the academic, industrial, professional, and training sectors to share best practice; (ii) to provide a meaningful and interactive scientific environment to promote discussion and collaboration between students, postdoctoral fellows, and both new and established investigators; (iii) to inspire and suggest new research directions and questions.     In the few studies published on essential oils from female and male specimens of Baccharis species, strong differences between the compositions of both samples were always found. The experiments conducted in this study make use of strategies to minimize the interference from genetic and environmental factors. Essential oils from leaves of female and male specimens of five Baccharis species were investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry plus flame ionization detector (GC-MS-FID): B. caprariaefolia and B. dracunculifolia, which have been previously studied with similar aims; and B. coridifolia, B. semiserrata var. elaegnoides and B. pentaptera, the latter two not yet mentioned in the literature. The results were followed by hierarchical cluster analysis, verifying the formation of groups indicative of the great similarity of essential oils from male and female specimens of all five species. The study reinforces the value of field observation in natural product research and points genetic and ecological factors as main responsible for differences in the secondary metabolites of the studied plants._________________________________________________________________________________________ RESUMO: Nos poucos estudos publicados comparando óleos essenciais de espécimes femininos e masculinos de espécies Baccharis, fortes diferenças entre as composições de ambas as amostras foram sempre encontradas. Os experimentos realizados nesta pesquisa utilizam estratégias para minimizar a interferência de fatores genéticos e ecológicos. Os óleos essenciais das folhas de espécimes femininos e masculinos de cinco espécies Baccharis foram pesquisados com uso de um cromatógrafo gasoso acoplado a um espectrômetro de massas e a um detector de ionização de chama (CG-EM-DIC): B. caprariaefolia e B. dracunculifolia, já pesquisadas anteriormente com objetivos similares; e B. coridifolia, B. semiserrata var. elaegnoides e B. pentaptera, as duas últimas ainda não mencionadas na literatura química. Os resultados foram acompanhados por análise hierárquica de grupos, verificando-se a formação de grupos indicativos da grande similaridade entre óleos essenciais dos espécimes masculinos e femininos de todas as cinco espécies. O estudo reafirma o valor das observações de campo na pesquisa de produtos naturais, e aponta fatores genéticos e ecológicos como principais responsáveis por diferenças no metabolismo secundário das plantas estudadas.

    Reservoir sediments sequester significant amounts of organic carbon (OC), but at the same time, high amounts of methane (CH4) can be produced and emitted during the degradation of sediment OC. While the greenhouse gas emission of reservoirs has received a lot of attention, there is a lack of studies focusing on OC burial. In particular, there are no studies on reservoir OC burial in the Amazon, even though hydropower is expanding in the basin. Here we present results from the first investigation of OC burial and CH4 concentrations in the sediments of an Amazonian hydroelectric reservoir. We performed sub-bottom profiling, sediment coring and sediment pore water analysis in the Curuá Una (CUN) reservoir (Amazon, Brazil) during rising- and falling-water periods. The spatially resolved average sediment accumulation rate was 0.6 cm yr−1, and the average OC burial rate was 91 g C m−2 yr−1. This is the highest OC burial rate on record for low-latitude hydroelectric reservoirs. Such a high rate probably results from a high OC deposition onto the sediment, which compensates the high OC mineralization at a 28–30 ∘C water temperature. Elevated OC burial was found near the dam and close to major river inflow areas. C:N ratios between 10.3 and 17 (average ± SD: 12.9±2.1) suggest that both land-derived and aquatic OC accumulate in CUN sediments. About 23 % of the sediment pore water samples had dissolved CH4 above the saturation concentration. This represents a higher share than in other hydroelectric reservoirs, indicating a high potential for CH4 ebullition, particularly in river inflow areas.

    Programação Orientada a Aspectos é conhecida como uma técnica para modularização de interesses transversais. Entretanto, construções que visam apoiar a modularidade transversal podem quebrar a modularidade de classe. Como consequência, os desenvolvedores de classes enfrentam problemas de modificabilidade, desenvolvimento em paralelo e entendimento, porque precisam estar conscientes da implementação dos aspectos sempre que forem desenvolver ou dar manutenção em uma classe. Ao mesmo tempo, aspectos são vulneráveis a mudanças nas classes, já que não existe um contrato especificando os pontos de interação entre estes elementos. Estes problemas podem ser mitigados através de Regras de Projeto entre classes e aspectos. Nós apresentamos uma linguagem para especificação de Regras de Projeto (LSD) e exploramos seus benefícios desde as fases iniciais do processo de desenvolvimento, especialmente com o objetivo de dar apoio ao desenvolvimento modular de classes e aspectos. Nós discutimos como nossa linguagem melhora a modularidade transversal sem quebrar a modularidade de classe. Além disso, especificamos a semântica da linguagem em Alloy. A linguagem é implementada através de uma extensão do abc (AspectBench Compiler), tornando mais fácil expressar e checar muitas das Regras de Projeto encontradas em sistemas Orientados a Aspectos. Nós avaliamos LSD usando o sistema Health Watcher como estudo de caso e comparamos com abordagens existentes._________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT: Aspect-Oriented Programming is known as a technique for modularizing crosscutting concerns. However, constructs aimed to support crosscutting modularity might actually break class modularity. As a consequence, class developers face changeability, parallel development and comprehensibility problems, because they must be aware of aspects whenever they develop or maintain a class. At the same time, aspects are vulnerable to changes in classes, since there is no contract specifying the points of interaction amongst these elements. These problems can be mitigated by using adequate Design Rules between classes and aspects. We present a Design Rule specification language (LSD) and explore its benefits since the initial phases of the development process, specially with the aim of supporting modular development of classes and aspects. We discuss how our language improves crosscutting modularity without breaking class modularity. Besides, we specify the language semantics in Alloy. The language is implemented through an extension of abc (AspectBench Compiler), making it easy to express and check most of the Design Rules found in Aspect-Oriented systems. We evaluate the language using the Health Watcher system as case study and compare it with existent approaches.

    The stable isotope records for mid- and late- Holocene are based on two stalagmites, VEAJ collected in Alfredo Jahn cave and VECA collected in Caripe Cave, respectively. Both caves are located in northern Venezuela, adjacent to Cariaco Basin. The ẟ18O record was interpreted as a proxy for the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) to our study sites, and the ẟ13C record as a proxy for vegetation changes, as discussed in the paper 'Atlantic ITCZ variability during the Holocene based on high-resolution speleothem isotope records from northern Venezuela' (Medina et al., 2023). The ẟ18O and ẟ13C analyses were performed at the Stable Isotope Laboratory at the Institute of Geoscience of the University of São Paulo (Brazil) using a Thermo-Finnigan Delta Plus Advantage mass spectrometer. ẟ-notation in per mil units (‰) was used to express the sample isotopic ratios deviation from the Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB) standard. Approximately 200 μg of CaCO3-powder subsamples for ẟ18O and ẟ13C stable isotopic analyses were collected using a manually controlled Sherline 5400 milling at a resolution of 0.4 mm for VEAJ and 0.5 mm for VECA. The ẟ18O and ẟ13C isotopic profiles of VEAJ-base, VEAJ-top left and VEAJ-top right are based on 530, 310 and 250 samples, respectively. VECA isotopic profiles consist of 670 samples. Since VEAJ-top left overlaps with some sections of the -top right record, we merged them through normalization (i.e., by subtracting the mean and dividing by the standard deviation) of the data inside the overlapping period, averaging both series and then reconstructing the shorter time series with the mean and standard deviation of the longer one. The geochronology was established by means of the U/Th dating method, using a multicollector inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometers (MC-ICP-MS-Thermo-Finnigan NEPTUNE) at the Institute of Global Environmental Change, Xi'an Jiaotong University (China). The sampling for the U/Th dating was performed by extracting ~0.100 g of powdered carbonate with a handheld drill of the least porous and colored, most traceable layers along or at the side of each speleothem growth axis. A total of 42 U/Th ages were used to construct the age model for VEAJ and 25 for VECA, yielding an mean temporal stable isotope sampling resolutions of 3 and 23 years for VEAJ-base & top-composite, respectively, and 1.5 years for VECA. Some age reversals along the stalagmites were flagged as outliers using Bayesian statistics, and consequently removed from the age models. For other age inversions, an iterative procedure was applied to increase the range of uncertainty in order to fulfill the monotonicity criterion (Scholz and Hoffmann, 2011). The two different distance columns correspond to the sampling depths for the two adjacent stalagmites: the top left (VEAJ-top left) and top right (VEAJ-top right), that grew on the top of the lower section (VEAJ-base).

    We investigate the magnetic properties and chemical composition of remagnetised carbonate rocks in South America. These rocks play a crucial role in understanding past climates and the behaviour of Earth's magnetic field. Unfortunately, the primary remanence of these rocks is often altered by secondary components in a process known as remagnetisation. In South America, we observe evidence of a continent-wide remagnetisation event in Neoproterozoic carbonates from sedimentary basins separated by significant distances. To shed further light on this phenomenon, we employ both traditional macroscopic rock magnetic analysis and advanced synchrotron-based nano/micro imaging and chemical analysis techniques.

    The Second Annual Meeting of the European Virus Bioinformatics Center (EVBC), held in Utrecht, Netherlands, focused on computational approaches in virology, with topics including (but not limited to) virus discovery, diagnostics, (meta-)genomics, modeling, epidemiology, molecular structure, evolution, and viral ecology. The goals of the Second Annual Meeting were threefold: (i) to bring together virologists and bioinformaticians from across the academic, industrial, professional, and training sectors to share best practice; (ii) to provide a meaningful and interactive scientific environment to promote discussion and collaboration between students, postdoctoral fellows, and both new and established investigators; (iii) to inspire and suggest new research directions and questions. Approximately 120 researchers from around the world attended the Second Annual Meeting of the EVBC this year, including 15 renowned international speakers. This report presents an overview of new developments and novel research findings that emerged during the meeting.
