    Anonymity networks protect the metadata of communication between participants. This is an important privacy guarantee for whistleblowers, activists, journalists and others who rely on anonymity networks. However, these same guarantees can also help criminals and disruptive users evade the consequences of their actions. Existing literature and research has little to say on what designers and operators of such networks can do to maximize beneficial uses while minimizing harm. We build on lessons learned from the widespread deployment of another strong privacy technology, end-to-end encrypted messaging applications, as well as on existing examples from anonymity networks, to formulate a set of design methods which anonymity networks can use to discourage harmful use. We find better solutions exist when networks are specialized to particular application domains since such networks are then able to provide a better trade-off between benefits and harms. One drawback of such specialization is that it may lead to smaller numbers of users and therefore an increased risk of insufficient anonymity.

    We present BISTRO Survey 850 μm dust emission polarization observations of the L1495A-B10 region of the Taurus molecular cloud, taken at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We observe a roughly triangular network of dense filaments. We detect nine of the dense starless cores embedded within these filaments in polarization, finding that the plane-of-sky orientation of the core-scale magnetic field lies roughly perpendicular to the filaments in almost all cases. We also find that the large-scale magnetic field orientation measured by Planck is not correlated with any of the core or filament structures, except in the case of the lowest-density core. We propose a scenario for early prestellar evolution that is both an extension to, and consistent with, previous models, introducing an additional evolutionary transitional stage between field-dominated and matter-dominated evolution, observed here for the first time. In this scenario, the cloud collapses first to a sheet-like structure. Uniquely, we appear to be seeing this sheet almost face on. The sheet fragments into filaments, which in turn form cores. However, the material must reach a certain critical density before the evolution changes from being field dominated to being matter dominated. We measure the sheet surface density and the magnetic field strength at that transition for the first time and show consistency with an analytical prediction that had previously gone untested for over 50 yr. © 2023.     ChatGPT is an emerging tool that can be employed in many activities including in learning/teaching in universities. Like many other tools, it has its benefits and its drawbacks. If used properly, it can improve learning, and if used irresponsibly, it can have a negative impact on learning. The aim of this research is to study how ChatGPT can be used in academia to improve teaching/learning activities. In this paper, we study students’ opinions about how the tool can be used positively in learning activities. A survey is conducted among 430 students of an MSc degree in computer science at the University of Hertfordshire, UK, and their opinions about the tool are studied. The survey tries to capture different aspects in which the tool can be employed in academia and the ways in which it can harm or help students in learning activities. The findings suggest that many students are familiar with the tool but do not regularly use it for academic purposes. Moreover, students are skeptical of its positive impacts on learning and think that universities should provide more vivid guidelines and better education on how and where the tool can be used for learning activities. The students’ feedback responses are analyzed and discussed and the authors’ opinions regarding the subject are presented. This study shows that ChatGPT can be helpful in learning/teaching activities, but better guidelines should be provided for the students in using the tool. © 2023 by the authors.     We propose Narrowest Significance Pursuit (NSP), a general and flexible methodology for automatically detecting localised regions in data sequences which each must contain a change-point (understood as an abrupt change in the parameters of an underlying linear model), at a prescribed global significance level. NSP works with a wide range of distributional assumptions on the errors, and guarantees important stochastic bounds which directly yield exact desired coverage probabilities, regardless of the form or number of the regressors. In contrast to the widely studied “post-selection inference” approach, NSP paves the way for the concept of “post-inference selection”. An implementation is available in the R package nsp.

    We propose Narrowest Significance Pursuit (NSP), a general and flexible methodology for automatically detecting localised regions in data sequences which each must contain a change-point (understood as an abrupt change in the parameters of an underlying linear model), at a prescribed global significance level. NSP works with a wide range of distributional assumptions on the errors, and guarantees important stochastic bounds which directly yield exact desired coverage probabilities, regardless of the form or number of the regressors. In contrast to the widely studied “post-selection inference” approach, NSP paves the way for the concept of “post-inference selection”. An implementation is available in the R package nsp.
