    [EN] Speaker: Gail Higginbottom (The Australian National University). There are hundreds of free-standing stone monuments in western Scotland and no-one really understands how they were used or why they were built. My project uncovers something about the interactions between the builders and their monuments by investigating the reasons behind the locational choices for the monuments. This talk will explain some of the background, methods and outcomes of the evidence-based, interdisciplinary investigations done in Scotland and show how all the monuments together form an expression of communal belief systems across geographical areas & explain something of what these systems might be. The immediacy and striking nature of the land and sky–scapes, helps point to the possible essential nature of both the individual’s experience and the community’s understanding of their world in Scotland. I shall then suggest how these approaches, combined with others so far missing from the Scottish project, would assist in the research of megalithic monuments of Galacia. In particular, how creating a comparative project, might enable us to assess whether or not understandings and values associated with the creation of megalithic monuments were shared between previous and current cultures in different regions across Europe. [ES] Ponente: Gail Higginbottom (The Australian National University). Hay cientos de monumentos de piedra aislados en Escocia occidental y nadie realmente entiende cómo fueron usados o por qué fueron construidos. En esta charla se explican algunos de los antecedentes, métodos y resultados de las investigaciones realizados en Escocia y se muestra cómo todos los monumentos juntos forman una expresión de creencias comunes a través de áreas geográficas y se explica lo que podrían ser estos sistemas. La inmediatez y la impresionante naturaleza de la tierra y el cielo ayudan a indicar la posible naturaleza esencial tanto de la experiencia del individuo como de la comprensión de la comunidad en Escocia. Se sugiere cómo estos enfoques, junto con otros que hasta ahora faltan en el proyecto escocés, ayudarían en la investigación de monumentos megalíticos de Galicia. En particular, se plantea cómo se podría crear un proyecto comparativo que permitiría evaluar si los conceptos y valores asociados con la creación de monumentos megalíticos fueron compartidos entre las culturas anteriores y actuales en las distintas regiones en toda Europa.     Authors: Vuelta-Santín, Rubén; Incio del Río, Cristina; González Álvarez, David;

    Un grupo de investigadoras del INCIPIT-CSIC inició en agosto de 2023, en el municipio de Forcarei en Pontevedra, una segunda campaña arqueológica en la aldea perdida de Silvaescura, situada en los lindes entre el monte de Soutelo y el de Trasdomonte. Los trabajos de campo se desarrollaron con la arqueóloga e investigadora Cristina Incio del Río, del Instituto de Ciencias del Patrimonio (Incipit-CSIC), como directora de intervención. Las labores previstas incluyeron trabajos de fotointerpretación, vuelo con dron, prospección intensiva, prospección geofísica y sondeos valorativos manuales. El equipo científico inició un primer proyecto en la aldea de Silvaescura en agosto del 2022. La intervención llevada a cabo mostró el potencial arqueológico de esta aldea abandonada. Se realizaron excavaciones en los restos de dos edificaciones en las que se encontraron testimonios de la vida cotidiana de las familias campesinas que habitaron la aldea, fragmentos cerámicos de diferentes recipientes y vajilla, tejas, pesas de techo de colmo y fragmentos de potes metálicos de tres pies. Todo esto apunta a que se trata de antiguas viviendas ocupadas entre los siglos XVII o XIX, posible período de vida de la propia aldea. La nueva campaña tiene como objetivo determinar la extensión de la aldea y definir las viviendas que la compondrían. Para ello se utilizarán métodos no invasivos, como el uso de un gradiómetro en el entorno de las estructuras conocidas. Este aparato permite detectar muros enterrados donde luego se realizarán excavaciones arqueológicas. Todo ello permitirá saber más sobre la evolución, proceso constructivo y ocupación tanto de las viviendas conocidas hasta el momento como de otras que compondrían en su día la aldea de Silvaescura. La intervención está enmarcada en un programa de actuaciones más amplio centrado en el conocimiento sobre el poblamiento en la zona rural gallega en época moderna y contemporánea. Uno de los principales ejes de la investigación es el análisis del abandono y desaparición de estos pequeños núcleos de población, aldeas de las que solo se mantienen pequeños indicios y una memoria remota. Equipo científico: Directora de la intervención: Cristina-Incio-del-Río; Equipo arqueológico: Álvaro Falquina-Aparicio, Álvaro Moreno-Jiménez, Ángela Orosa-Queijo, David González-Álvarez, Fátima Rodríguez-Porto, Rafael Millán-Pascual, Rodrigo González-Camino, Vega Arribas-Greciano; Realización y edición de vídeo: Rubén Vuelta-Santín; Colabora: Concello de Forcarei; Música: Highway One - Steve Adams (YouTube Audio Library). The XSCAPE Team in Santiago de Compostela and its home institution INCIPIT-CSIC, have organised a Winter School, comprised of a series of four field sessions. XSCAPE and INCIPIT crew shared discussions and ideas about landscape, materiality and perceptual behavior. ERC-2020-SyG 951631 – XSCAPE Project 'Material Minds: Exploring the Interactions between Predictive Brains, Cultural Artefacts, and Embodied Visual Search'. Material Minds (acronym XSCAPE) is an ERC Synergy Grant project, as announced by the European Research Council on Nov 5, 2020. Material Minds Lab is the experimental facility of the XSCAPE Project based in INCIPIT-CSIC in Santiago de Compostela. The Material Minds research problem is, in short: How do the worlds we build alter our own minds and the ways we process information? Do the material structures of our settlements, buildings, roads, and artefacts actively change patterns of thought and attention, so that understanding change in these ‘material codes’ becomes part and parcel of understanding the emergence of the modern mind? The PIs of XSCAPE are Felipe Criado-Boado (corresponding PI) of the INCIPIT-CSIC, Luis M. Martínez-Otero of the Institute of Neurosciences (joint centre of CSIC and UMH), Andy Clark, of the Departments of Informatics and Philosophy of the University of Sussex, and Johannes Müller, of the Institute of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology of Kiel University. 2º Encontro de pesquisa, educação e socialização do Património dos Arcos de Valdevez. Braga/Extremo, Arcos de Valdevez. 27-28 de Outubro de 2023. No marco das investigações que nos últimos sete anos se estão a desenvolver no lugar do Extremo (Arcos de Valdevez) pela Unidade de Arqueologia e o Lab2PT da UMinho, foi possível estabelecer fortes redes de cooperação com a comunidade local que se traduziram em uma série de atividades de tipo científico, patrimonial e educacional coordenadas entre os cientistas e os agentes locais. Em 2023 obtivemos o projeto exploratório IN2PAST Da terra à Terra. Conexões para Territórios Sustentáveis (Land-CST) (EXPL/In2Past/2023/09) cujos objetivos incluem o desenvolvimento de ferramentas metodológicas para o estudo da paisagem, em colaboração com a comunidade local, com a intenção de reverter o conhecimento gerado na sustentabilidade patrimonial deste território afetado pela emigração, o despovoamento ou o envelhecimento da população. Em 2023, com o objetivo de transcender o olhar localizado neste território, convergiremos com as investigações desenvolvidas por outras equipas arqueológicas que centram o seu olhar nas paisagens rurais da época moderna e contemporânea. Em colaboração com o projeto Lectura arqueológica de tiempos largos sobre la formación de los paisajes rurales en el Noroeste ibérico (LEIRA) desenvolvido pelo Instituto de Ciencias do Patrimonio (INCIPIT-CSIC), iremos realizar um workshop para discutir metodologias de leitura arqueológica da paisagem e a reversão dos resultados em projetos co-construídos com as comunidades locais. Esta segunda parte, no sábado dia 28, será dedicada a desenvolver em Extremo várias atividades partilhadas entre os cientistas e os habitantes da aldeia. This contribution was delivered on 6 May 2022 on the occasion of the hybrid 2022 edition of EUI State of the Union on ‘A Europe fit for the next generation?' What can history teach us about the importance of democracy and rule of law as characteristics of European political life? What is at stake? History has often been our guide, offering a benchmark for worst and best practice. In this session, world-leading scholars of Europe, law and democracy, canvas the different contexts in which the rule of law has come under pressure in Europe, whether in the context of security and fighting terror, pitting nationalism against integration, or dealing with Europe’s often violent past. They will also ask: can we learn from the past when we are thinking of the present and future of Europe? What lens should we use to help better understand the authority of the rule of law, the significance of democracy and its alternatives today?

    [ES] Vídeo que muestra la charla de investigación titulada "Presencia incaica en el centro oeste de la provincia de Catamarca, Argentina", que se realizó en el salón de actos del Instituto de Investigaciones Agrobiológicas de Galicia (IIAG), el 18-11-2016 en Santiago de Compostela. La ponente es Julieta Lynch (División Arqueología, Museo de La Plata, Argentina). El Tawantinsuyu -o tierra de los cuatro cuadrantes inka- fue el sistema político más grande en América del sur durante los siglos XIV y XV d.C. extendiéndose por más de 4000 km por una vasta región. En esta oportunidad se presenta la problemática de los asentamientos Inka y su relación con las poblaciones locales en el sector centro-oeste de la Provincia de Catamarca (Argentina), específicamente en los valles de Hualfín y Quimivil. Esta zona cuenta con una antigua ocupación agroalfarera evidenciándose en numerosos sitios arqueológicos de carácter local. Con la llegada del Inka en esta área a partir de mitad del siglo XV d.C., varios elementos del paisaje previo fueron transformados, incorporados o resignificados por estas sociedades. Sin embargo, la población local de los valles mencionados, con una aparente ausencia de conflicto militar, pareciera mantener algunos elementos de su identidad sin mayores transformaciones. Aquí exploramos las diferentes estrategias implementadas por el Inka para articular las realidades de la población local, al momento de incorporar nuevos territorios. Esto expone ciertas diferencias con lo sucedido en otras regiones, debido a las particularidades identitarias que fueron tenidas en cuenta dentro de las estrategias estatales. Estos temas son explorados a partir de la evidencia material de los sitios arqueológicos que se vienen trabajando desde hace años como Hualfín Inka, El Shincal, Villavil y Villavil 2. [EN] Video that shows the talk of research study entitled "Inca presence in the center-west of the province of Catamarca, Argentina", held in the assembly room of the Institute of Agrobiological Research from Galicia (IIAG), on November 18, 2016, in Santiago de Compostela. The speaker is Julieta Lynch (Archaeology Division, Museum of La Plata, Argentina). The Tawantinsuyu -or land of the four quadrants inka - was the political system largest in South America during the XIV and XV centuries A.D. spanning over 4000 km by a vast region. In this opportunity presents the problem of settlements Inka and its relationship with the local populations in sector Center-West in the province of Catamarca (Argentina), specifically in the valleys of Hualfín and Quimivil. This area has an ancient occupation thus exhibiting in numerous archaeological sites of local character. With the arrival of the Inka in this area from the second half of the XV century d.C., several elements of the landscape prior were processed or incorporated by these societies. However, the local population of the Valleys mentioned, with an apparent absence of military conflict, seems to maintain some elements of their identity without major transformations. Here we explore the different strategies implemented by the Inka to articulate the realities of the local population, at the time of incorporating new territories. This exposes certain differences with what happened in other regions, due to the particularities of identity that were taken into account within the strategies of the state. These issues are explored from the material evidence of the archaeological sites that have been working for years as Hualfín Inka, the Shincal, Villavil and Villavil 2. No

    Authors: Higginbottom, Gail; Vuelta-Santín, Rubén;

    [EN] Speaker: Gail Higginbottom (The Australian National University). There are hundreds of free-standing stone monuments in western Scotland and no-one really understands how they were used or why they were built. My project uncovers something about the interactions between the builders and their monuments by investigating the reasons behind the locational choices for the monuments. This talk will explain some of the background, methods and outcomes of the evidence-based, interdisciplinary investigations done in Scotland and show how all the monuments together form an expression of communal belief systems across geographical areas & explain something of what these systems might be. The immediacy and striking nature of the land and sky–scapes, helps point to the possible essential nature of both the individual’s experience and the community’s understanding of their world in Scotland. I shall then suggest how these approaches, combined with others so far missing from the Scottish project, would assist in the research of megalithic monuments of Galacia. In particular, how creating a comparative project, might enable us to assess whether or not understandings and values associated with the creation of megalithic monuments were shared between previous and current cultures in different regions across Europe. [ES] Ponente: Gail Higginbottom (The Australian National University). Hay cientos de monumentos de piedra aislados en Escocia occidental y nadie realmente entiende cómo fueron usados o por qué fueron construidos. En esta charla se explican algunos de los antecedentes, métodos y resultados de las investigaciones realizados en Escocia y se muestra cómo todos los monumentos juntos forman una expresión de creencias comunes a través de áreas geográficas y se explica lo que podrían ser estos sistemas. La inmediatez y la impresionante naturaleza de la tierra y el cielo ayudan a indicar la posible naturaleza esencial tanto de la experiencia del individuo como de la comprensión de la comunidad en Escocia. Se sugiere cómo estos enfoques, junto con otros que hasta ahora faltan en el proyecto escocés, ayudarían en la investigación de monumentos megalíticos de Galicia. En particular, se plantea cómo se podría crear un proyecto comparativo que permitiría evaluar si los conceptos y valores asociados con la creación de monumentos megalíticos fueron compartidos entre las culturas anteriores y actuales en las distintas regiones en toda Europa.     Authors: Vuelta-Santín, Rubén; Incio del Río, Cristina; González Álvarez, David;

    Un grupo de investigadoras del INCIPIT-CSIC inició en agosto de 2023, en el municipio de Forcarei en Pontevedra, una segunda campaña arqueológica en la aldea perdida de Silvaescura, situada en los lindes entre el monte de Soutelo y el de Trasdomonte. Los trabajos de campo se desarrollaron con la arqueóloga e investigadora Cristina Incio del Río, del Instituto de Ciencias del Patrimonio (Incipit-CSIC), como directora de intervención. Las labores previstas incluyeron trabajos de fotointerpretación, vuelo con dron, prospección intensiva, prospección geofísica y sondeos valorativos manuales. El equipo científico inició un primer proyecto en la aldea de Silvaescura en agosto del 2022. La intervención llevada a cabo mostró el potencial arqueológico de esta aldea abandonada. Se realizaron excavaciones en los restos de dos edificaciones en las que se encontraron testimonios de la vida cotidiana de las familias campesinas que habitaron la aldea, fragmentos cerámicos de diferentes recipientes y vajilla, tejas, pesas de techo de colmo y fragmentos de potes metálicos de tres pies. Todo esto apunta a que se trata de antiguas viviendas ocupadas entre los siglos XVII o XIX, posible período de vida de la propia aldea. La nueva campaña tiene como objetivo determinar la extensión de la aldea y definir las viviendas que la compondrían. Para ello se utilizarán métodos no invasivos, como el uso de un gradiómetro en el entorno de las estructuras conocidas. Este aparato permite detectar muros enterrados donde luego se realizarán excavaciones arqueológicas. Todo ello permitirá saber más sobre la evolución, proceso constructivo y ocupación tanto de las viviendas conocidas hasta el momento como de otras que compondrían en su día la aldea de Silvaescura. La intervención está enmarcada en un programa de actuaciones más amplio centrado en el conocimiento sobre el poblamiento en la zona rural gallega en época moderna y contemporánea. Uno de los principales ejes de la investigación es el análisis del abandono y desaparición de estos pequeños núcleos de población, aldeas de las que solo se mantienen pequeños indicios y una memoria remota. Equipo científico: Directora de la intervención: Cristina-Incio-del-Río; Equipo arqueológico: Álvaro Falquina-Aparicio, Álvaro Moreno-Jiménez, Ángela Orosa-Queijo, David González-Álvarez, Fátima Rodríguez-Porto, Rafael Millán-Pascual, Rodrigo González-Camino, Vega Arribas-Greciano; Realización y edición de vídeo: Rubén Vuelta-Santín; Colabora: Concello de Forcarei; Música: Highway One - Steve Adams (YouTube Audio Library). The XSCAPE Team in Santiago de Compostela and its home institution INCIPIT-CSIC, have organised a Winter School, comprised of a series of four field sessions. XSCAPE and INCIPIT crew shared discussions and ideas about landscape, materiality and perceptual behavior. ERC-2020-SyG 951631 – XSCAPE Project 'Material Minds: Exploring the Interactions between Predictive Brains, Cultural Artefacts, and Embodied Visual Search'. Material Minds (acronym XSCAPE) is an ERC Synergy Grant project, as announced by the European Research Council on Nov 5, 2020. Material Minds Lab is the experimental facility of the XSCAPE Project based in INCIPIT-CSIC in Santiago de Compostela. The Material Minds research problem is, in short: How do the worlds we build alter our own minds and the ways we process information? Do the material structures of our settlements, buildings, roads, and artefacts actively change patterns of thought and attention, so that understanding change in these ‘material codes’ becomes part and parcel of understanding the emergence of the modern mind? The PIs of XSCAPE are Felipe Criado-Boado (corresponding PI) of the INCIPIT-CSIC, Luis M. Martínez-Otero of the Institute of Neurosciences (joint centre of CSIC and UMH), Andy Clark, of the Departments of Informatics and Philosophy of the University of Sussex, and Johannes Müller, of the Institute of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology of Kiel University. VIDEO PRODUCERS: Rubén Vuelta-Santín, Felipe Criado-Boado; PRODUCTION: INCIPIT-CSIC; PHOTOGRAPHS: Carlos Fernández-Piñar; ENGLISH REVIEW: Jadranka Verdonkschot; ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: Jaime Almansa-Sánchez, Technical Staff of Parque Arqueológico del Arte Rupestre de Campo Lameiro, Technical Staff of Parque Arqueológico de la Cultura Castrexa Lansbrica, Members of INCIPIT-CSIC that actively participated in the activity.
