    This study investigates the thermal and energetic dynamics of primary school classrooms in a Mediterranean climate in Khoualed Abdel Hakeem, Ain Temouchent County, Algeria. The research highlights significant optimizations by focusing on passive strategies such as external shading devices, Window-to-Wall Ratio (WWR), glazing types, and building envelope adjustments. Our simulations, validated rigorously, showcase a remarkable congruence with actual electricity consumption, affirming the reliability and efficacy of our simulation model as a valuable predictive tool. A Vertical Shading Angle (VSA) of 60° proves optimal, resulting in an impressive 11% reduction in Annual Energy Consumption (AEC). A recommended WWR of 30% demonstrates an 11% decrease in AEC and improves thermal and energy efficiency. Double Low Emissivity (Double-Low E) glazing is found to be superior, resulting in a significant 14% decrease in AEC. Achieving a WWR of 50% in shaded areas helps maintain a well-balanced thermal environment, resulting in a 12% reduction in heating and cooling requirements. The integration of passive strategies in the optimized model showcases a remarkable 44% overall reduction in energy consumption. The results highlight the efficacy of passive strategies, promoting energy-conscious and ecologically responsible practices, advocating for their incorporation in educational facilities, and offering valuable insights for sustainable school building design.     This study investigates the perceptions of three Swedish stakeholders towards the contested use of waste incineration bottom ash as aggregates outside landfills: waste producers, users and authorities. The interview study shows that the stakeholders lack incentives to circulate bottom ash. Waste producers have a functional outlet for bottom ash by using it as landfill cover. Since the transition from gravel to crushed rock, the availability of natural aggregates is enormous in Sweden at low environmental and economic costs. This causes the potential users of bottom ash to prioritize conventional aggregates. In cases where waste-based aggregates are nevertheless used, they are taken from project-internal sources. Hence, there are few incentives for the authorities to change the currently unfavorable regulations for using bottom ash as aggregates. With unclear environmental benefits and contested interests, the rationale for circulating bottom ash appears to be driven by morality. QC 20240214

    The human voice is notoriously variable, and conventional measurement paradigms are weak in terms of providing evidence for effects of treatment and/or training of voices. New methods are needed that can take into account the variability of metrics and types of phonation across the voice range. The “voice map” is a generalization of the Voice Range Profile (a.k.a. the phonetogram), with the potential to be used in many ways, for teaching, training, therapy and research. FonaDyn is intended as a proof-of concept workbench for education and research on phonation, and for exploring and validating the analysis paradigm of voice-mapping. Version 3.1 of the FonaDyn system adds many new functions, including listening from maps; displaying multiple maps and difference maps to track effects of voice interventions; smoothing/interpolation of voice maps; clustering not only of EGG shapes but also of acoustic and EGG metrics into phonation types; extended multichannel acquisition;24-bit recording with optional max 140 dB SPL; a built-in SPL calibration and signal diagnostics tool; EGG noise suppression; more Matlab integration; script control; the acoustic metrics Spectrum Balance, Cepstral Peak Prominence and Harmonic Richness Factor (of the EGG); and better window layout control.     Interactions between dry cellulose were studied using model systems, cellulose beads, and cellulose films, usingcustom-built contact adhesion testing equipment. Depending on the configuration of the substrates in contact,Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film, cellulose films spin-coated either on PDMS or glass, the interaction showsthree distinct processes. Firstly, molecular interlocking is formed between cellulose and cellulose when there is asoft PDMS thin film backing the cellulose film. Secondly, without backing, no initial attraction force between thesurfaces is observed. Thirdly, a significant force increase, ΔF, is observed during the retraction process for cel­lulose on glass, and there is a maximum in ΔF when the retraction rate is increased. This is due to the kinetics of acontacting process occurring in the interaction zone between the surfaces caused by an interdigitation of a finefibrillar structure at the nano-scale, whereas, for the spin-coated cellulose surfaces on the PDMS backing, there isa more direct adhesive failure. The results have generated understanding of the interaction between cellulose-rich materials, which helps design new, advanced cellulose-based materials. The results also show thecomplexity of the interaction between these surfaces and that earlier mechanisms, based on macroscopic materialtesting, are simply not adequate for molecular tailoring.     Understanding residents’ perceptions of green-blue infrastructure (GBI) is critical to ensure continued access to its associated benefits in growing and densifying urban landscapes. Physical availability and accessibility of green spaces alone do not directly translate to actual appreciation and use. Residents’ sense of place can determine if benefits from GBI are realized and how landscape changes may be perceived. In this study, set in sub-urban Stockholm, Sweden, we applied a mixed-methods approach combining mental mapping with follow-up interviews to investigate how such methodology can improve our understanding of residents’ perception of the recreational use of GBI. For the mental mapping exercise, participants drew, freehand, a map of appreciated neighborhood places for recreational purposes. Our results clearly show that mental mapping provides relevant information on individual and collective perceptions of recreational GBI, linkages between green-blue and gray infrastructure elements, and recreational hot-spots of importance to the local inhabitants. The unguided approach to welding local knowledge with spatial expressions makes the method well suited to contribute to a better understanding of plural senses of place with regards to the recreational use of GBI in rapidly urbanizing landscapes and an enhanced capacity to recognise locally appreciated recreational spaces in planning and practical management.     Breath-holding preceded by either an overnight fast or hyperventilation has been shown to potentiate the risk of a hypoxic blackout. However, no study has explored the combined effects of fasting and hyperventilation on apneic performance and associated physiological responses. Nine nondivers (8 males) attended the laboratory on two separate occasions (≥48 h apart), both after a 12-h overnight fast. During each visit, a hyperoxic rebreathing trial was performed followed by three repeated maximal static apneas preceded by either normal breathing (NORM) or a 30-s hyperventilation (HYPER). Splenic volume, hematology, cardiovascular, and respiratory variables were monitored. There were no interprotocol differences at rest or during hyperoxic rebreathing for any variable (P ≥ 0.09). On nine occasions (8 in HYPER), the subjects reached our safety threshold (oxygen saturation 65%) and were asked to abort their apneas, with the preponderance of these incidents (6 of 9) occurring during the third repetition. Across the sequential attempts, longer apneas were recorded in HYPER [median(range), 220(123–324) s vs. 185(78–296) s, P ≤ 0.001], with involuntary breathing movements occurring later [134(65–234) s vs. 97(42–200) s, P ≤ 0.001] and end-apneic partial end-tidal pressures of oxygen (PETO2) being lower (P ≤ 0.02). During the final repetition, partial end-tidal pressure of carbon dioxide [(PETCO2), 6.53 ± 0.46 kPa vs. 6.01 ± 0.45 kPa, P = 0.005] was lower in HYPER. Over the serial attempts, preapneic tidal volume was gradually elevated [from apnea 1 to 3, by 0.26 ± 0.24 L (HYPER) and 0.28 ± 0.30 L (NORM), P ≤ 0.025], with a correlation noted with preapneic PETCO2 (r = −0.57, P < 0.001) and PETO2 (r = 0.76, P < 0.001), respectively. In a fasted state, preapnea hyperventilation compared with normal breathing leads to longer apneas but may increase the susceptibility to a hypoxic blackout. QC 20240326

    Seakeeping evaluations are important in the early design stages in order to ensure that vessels can sail the seas and execute their missions safely in the intended conditions. Such evaluations require a set of criteria that translate seakeeping design requirements into tangible measures for decision-making. Despite the availability of seakeeping criteria, certain unsuitable considerations and specifications currently in use result in challenges to crew and operations that do not become apparent until later in a vessel’s service. Though not claimed to be exhaustive, this paper catalogues and reviews the seakeeping criteria commonly used to date, guided by findings from focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews. The paper unearths the original sources whilst discussing the scientific basis for these criteria and standards. Particular attention is given to the early design stages and opportunities for improvement and further development are highlighted. Findings from this study indicate that it is necessary to develop seakeeping criteria for certain vessel types and that there are opportunities to improve seakeeping criteria addressing crew well-being, performance and safety.     Multiphase electrical machines are inherently fault tolerant due to the higher number of phases. An important step in achieving a fault tolerant control is the ability to detect and identify the fault. In variable phase-pole drives, which are a class of multiphase machines that change the number of pole pairs during real-time operation, there are further unexplored possibilities. Based on the harmonic plane decomposition theory for variable phase-pole machines, a fault detection and identification algorithm is proposed, which analyzes the spatial harmonics of the current distribution. The fault detection is fast, operation independent, non-invasive, parameter-insensitive, and computationally simple. Experimental tests validate the proposed method. QC 20240110

    Inclusionary housing policies, aiming at creating both affordable housing and mixed neighbourhoods through land use regulation, do not have a long history in Scandinavia. Although Denmark, Norway, and Sweden have traditional welfare state perspectives on equal opportunities and housing, the use of the planning system to implement policy is hesitant. This article outlines the diverse political backgrounds and influences from housing and planning systems that explain this paradox. Further, differences between the housing and planning systems in the three countries are well illustrated by the varying interpretations of inclusionary housing policies. Policy results, in terms of affordability and social mix, play out very differently in the given contexts. The article in this sense adds to the scholarly conversations about barriers and opportunities for IH policy implementation, by contextualizing the conversation with implications from within systems that are relatively homogeneous and aiming for redistribution and equity.     This study investigates the thermal and energetic dynamics of primary school classrooms in a Mediterranean climate in Khoualed Abdel Hakeem, Ain Temouchent County, Algeria. The research highlights significant optimizations by focusing on passive strategies such as external shading devices, Window-to-Wall Ratio (WWR), glazing types, and building envelope adjustments. Our simulations, validated rigorously, showcase a remarkable congruence with actual electricity consumption, affirming the reliability and efficacy of our simulation model as a valuable predictive tool. A Vertical Shading Angle (VSA) of 60° proves optimal, resulting in an impressive 11% reduction in Annual Energy Consumption (AEC). A recommended WWR of 30% demonstrates an 11% decrease in AEC and improves thermal and energy efficiency. Double Low Emissivity (Double-Low E) glazing is found to be superior, resulting in a significant 14% decrease in AEC. Achieving a WWR of 50% in shaded areas helps maintain a well-balanced thermal environment, resulting in a 12% reduction in heating and cooling requirements. The integration of passive strategies in the optimized model showcases a remarkable 44% overall reduction in energy consumption. The results highlight the efficacy of passive strategies, promoting energy-conscious and ecologically responsible practices, advocating for their incorporation in educational facilities, and offering valuable insights for sustainable school building design.     This study investigates the perceptions of three Swedish stakeholders towards the contested use of waste incineration bottom ash as aggregates outside landfills: waste producers, users and authorities. The interview study shows that the stakeholders lack incentives to circulate bottom ash. Waste producers have a functional outlet for bottom ash by using it as landfill cover. Since the transition from gravel to crushed rock, the availability of natural aggregates is enormous in Sweden at low environmental and economic costs. This causes the potential users of bottom ash to prioritize conventional aggregates. In cases where waste-based aggregates are nevertheless used, they are taken from project-internal sources. Hence, there are few incentives for the authorities to change the currently unfavorable regulations for using bottom ash as aggregates. With unclear environmental benefits and contested interests, the rationale for circulating bottom ash appears to be driven by morality. QC 20240214

    The human voice is notoriously variable, and conventional measurement paradigms are weak in terms of providing evidence for effects of treatment and/or training of voices. New methods are needed that can take into account the variability of metrics and types of phonation across the voice range. The “voice map” is a generalization of the Voice Range Profile (a.k.a. the phonetogram), with the potential to be used in many ways, for teaching, training, therapy and research. FonaDyn is intended as a proof-of concept workbench for education and research on phonation, and for exploring and validating the analysis paradigm of voice-mapping. Version 3.1 of the FonaDyn system adds many new functions, including listening from maps; displaying multiple maps and difference maps to track effects of voice interventions; smoothing/interpolation of voice maps; clustering not only of EGG shapes but also of acoustic and EGG metrics into phonation types; extended multichannel acquisition;24-bit recording with optional max 140 dB SPL; a built-in SPL calibration and signal diagnostics tool; EGG noise suppression; more Matlab integration; script control; the acoustic metrics Spectrum Balance, Cepstral Peak Prominence and Harmonic Richness Factor (of the EGG); and better window layout control.     Interactions between dry cellulose were studied using model systems, cellulose beads, and cellulose films, usingcustom-built contact adhesion testing equipment. Depending on the configuration of the substrates in contact,Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film, cellulose films spin-coated either on PDMS or glass, the interaction showsthree distinct processes. Firstly, molecular interlocking is formed between cellulose and cellulose when there is asoft PDMS thin film backing the cellulose film. Secondly, without backing, no initial attraction force between thesurfaces is observed. Thirdly, a significant force increase, ΔF, is observed during the retraction process for cel­lulose on glass, and there is a maximum in ΔF when the retraction rate is increased. This is due to the kinetics of acontacting process occurring in the interaction zone between the surfaces caused by an interdigitation of a finefibrillar structure at the nano-scale, whereas, for the spin-coated cellulose surfaces on the PDMS backing, there isa more direct adhesive failure. The results have generated understanding of the interaction between cellulose-rich materials, which helps design new, advanced cellulose-based materials. The results also show thecomplexity of the interaction between these surfaces and that earlier mechanisms, based on macroscopic materialtesting, are simply not adequate for molecular tailoring.     Understanding residents’ perceptions of green-blue infrastructure (GBI) is critical to ensure continued access to its associated benefits in growing and densifying urban landscapes. Physical availability and accessibility of green spaces alone do not directly translate to actual appreciation and use. Residents’ sense of place can determine if benefits from GBI are realized and how landscape changes may be perceived. In this study, set in sub-urban Stockholm, Sweden, we applied a mixed-methods approach combining mental mapping with follow-up interviews to investigate how such methodology can improve our understanding of residents’ perception of the recreational use of GBI. For the mental mapping exercise, participants drew, freehand, a map of appreciated neighborhood places for recreational purposes. Our results clearly show that mental mapping provides relevant information on individual and collective perceptions of recreational GBI, linkages between green-blue and gray infrastructure elements, and recreational hot-spots of importance to the local inhabitants. The unguided approach to welding local knowledge with spatial expressions makes the method well suited to contribute to a better understanding of plural senses of place with regards to the recreational use of GBI in rapidly urbanizing landscapes and an enhanced capacity to recognise locally appreciated recreational spaces in planning and practical management.
