Publisher: John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Countries: France, Portugal, Germany, Finland, United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, BelgiumProject: EC | eLTER PLUS (871128)International audience; Globalization has led to the introduction of thousands of alien species worldwide. With growing impacts by invasive species, understanding the invasion process remains critical for predicting adverse effects and informing efficient management. Theoretically, invasion dynamics have been assumed to follow an "invasion curve" (S-shaped curve of available area invaded over time), but this dynamic has lacked empirical testing using large-scale data and neglects to consider invader abundances. We propose an "impact curve" describing the impacts generated by invasive species over time based on cumulative abundances. To test this curve's large-scale applicability, we used the data-rich New Zealand mud snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum, one of the most damaging freshwater invaders that has invaded almost all of Europe. Using long-term (1979-2020) abundance and environmental data collected across 306 European sites, we observed that P. antipodarum abundance generally increased through time, with slower population growth at higher latitudes and with lower runoff depth. Fifty-nine percent of these populations followed the impact curve, characterized by first occurrence, exponential growth, then long-term saturation. This behaviour is consistent with boom-bust dynamics, as saturation occurs due to a rapid decline in abundance over time. Across sites, we estimated that impact peaked approximately two decades after first detection, but the rate of progression along the invasion process was influenced by local abiotic conditions. The S-shaped impact curve may be common among many invasive species that undergo complex invasion dynamics. This provides a potentially unifying approach to advance understanding of large-scale invasion dynamics and could inform timely management actions to mitigate impacts on ecosystems and economies.

Publisher: Coimbra University PressCountry: BelgiumIn this short article I discuss the augment use in Pindar's five oldest Odes (based on the text of the editions by Snell & Maehler' in the Teubner and Race in the Loeb), namely Pythian 10 (498 BC), Pythian 6 (490), Pythian 12 (490), Olympian 14 (488, if correctly dated) and Pythian 7 (486). As the augment use in Pindar has never been studied in detail before and commentaries often do not mention it, I use the observations made for epic Greek as basis, more specifically that the augment is used to refer to foregrounded actions and actions in the recent past, and that it remains absent when actions in a remote or mythical past are related. I start by outlining these observations, then I determine which (un)augmented forms in Pindar are secured by the metre (the transmission of Pindar's Odes has not been unproblematic) and at the end apply the epic observation to the metrically secure forms of these five Odes. My investigation will show that the verb forms referring to the near-deixis (the victor's deeds, his origins and those of his city and the mythical characters with whom he is compared), are augmented, whereas the forms referring to other (mythical) actions remain unaugmented, but, as was the case with epic Greek, there are nevertheless also exceptions.

Country: BelgiumBased on research carried out in the area of Comparative Linguistics, motivated by the etymological study of Brazilian Bantuisms, the interest in investigating the other side of the coin was sparked: what exists borrowed in the bantu languages coming from neolatine airs. Thus, it is intended to approach and analyze the types of morphological and phonological adaptations evidenced in the vocabularies of religion, musical instruments and human anatomy and physiology, as a positive aspect of the contact between these languages for the formation / renewal of a lexicon. The words perceived in some Central African languages, gathered in this study, are of Portuguese and French natures that acquired bantu character and, reveal the types of instruments that were really imported, the aspects of the imposed religion, divergent to the belief system of the bantu area, and the possibilities of importing, even very limited, a basic vocabulary.

Country: BelgiumNowadays, the society is increasingly taking on the issue of using more sustainable resources for the planet. Recent studies have emerged on an existing new methodology, derived from the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which covers the three pillars of sustainability and is known as Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment. However, an understanding of each dimension is necessary to know how to perform this new technique in the best possible way. This literature review aimed to contextualize this new trend of LCA, including the considerations of several authors on the subject, bringing up information on the environmental, economic and social issues that serve as a subsidy for a more sustainable analysis. The first step in this research was to explore the issues to be addressed, with the conceptual analysis of the articles found, and the second step was to critically analyze the various opinions on the subject. With this study, it was possible to realize that there are still many gaps in this new tool and new methodologies need to be encompassed, and the challenge for the coming years is to know how to link LCA with the economic and social environment even more effectively, For all organizations such as life cycle sustainability assessment should be best used to ensure a more sustainable future.
