This dissertation investigates folk hymn singing traditions in Denmark in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, which are rooted in the congregational singing from times of the Reformation. The melodic and vocal style of these traditions are closely connected to the hymnals of Thomas Kingo (1634–1703) and Hans Adolph Brorson (1694–1764). The folk hymn singing mainly thrived in environments of revivalism. The traditions were transmitted until modern times, where five musicologists made audio recordings with the groups of people who could still sing in the old style. The dissertation draws on theory in the intersection of hymnology – with emphasis on the hymnals and the liturgy - and ethnomusicology – with emphasis on music as practice, agency, memory, and experience. In this interdisciplinary field, issues of hymnal-culture and audio recording are investigated. The dissertation explores four cases of Kingo- and Brorson singing, developing a method that combines the diachronic axis of the analysis, which explores processes of tradition and memory, with a synchronic axis that explores the social and religious interaction of participatory singing at a given moment of time. The study especially focuses on the way in which the singers vocally and musically experience and embody the social and confessional community, first of all in terms of the texture of the singing. The dissertation identifies features of unison, of heterophony and of dense textures. The study also investigates how the musical experience can stimulate not only community, but also conflicts in the relationship to others. The dissertation concludes that the study of sounding music can lead to new views on history, and that Danish history of song culture is more multifacetted than is commonly known.

Det overordnede formål med undersøgelsen er at undersøge, hvordan studenter definerer tryghed. Undersøgelsen har desuden til hensigt at undersøge hvordan studenter i Uppsala oplever (u)tryghed, når de færdes i det offentlige rum og anvender studenterne tryghedsfremmende strategier? Et casestudie i Uppsala med kvindelige og mandlige studerende er blevet gennemført for at nå formålet. Undersøgelsen anvender semistrukturerede interviews. Undersøgelsen viser, at studenter definere tryghed, som frihed til at gå i byen uden at føle sig forfulgt og have behov for øjne i nakken. Studenterne føler sig trygge i løbet af dagen, men ved mørkets frembrud kommer utrygheden. Dette skyldes mindre aktivitet, dårligere belysning og berusede mennesker. Som tiltag anvender studenterne både bevidste og ubevidste tiltag, for at øge trygheden. Nogle af tiltagene, som studenterne anvender, er ændring af bevægelsesmønster og anvendelsen af cyklen for at fremme oplevelsen af tryghed.

In the second half of the 18th century, a new understanding emerged of the concept of consciousness and its opposite, the unconscious, and of mental illness. An interest arose in the correct treatment of mentally ill people, as well as new ideas for practical and healthy architectonic frameworks in these people’s lives. In the years around 1800, various Danish architects submitted designs for a mental hospital in Copenhagen. The 1805 proposal was the most advanced, not because it was the most recent, but because it was designed by Jens Bang, who was both a trained architect and a qualified doctor. Bang had the prerequisites to create functional, people-friendly architecture that lived up to the latest international principles. For various reasons his proposal for Sankt Hans Hospital was never built. Yet it was the first planned hospital in Denmark – and even in Europe one of the first – to embody modern concepts acknowledging the influence of architecture on mental health. These ideas today, in another theoretical framework, form the foundation in the field of healing architecture.

Formålet med denne opgave er at undersøge nordmænd og svenskeres perception og forståelse af dansk udtale. Tidligere undersøgelser af nabosprogforståelsen i Skandinavien har nemlig vist at nordmænd præsterer bedre end svenskere når det kommer til at forstå talt dansk. Dette er blandt andet blevet forklaret med at der er større ligheder mellem det norske og det danske ordforråd. Spørgsmålet er om nordmændene også klarer sig bedre end svenskerne hvis de kun testes på ord der er samme på dansk, norsk og svensk. Dette undersøges gennem et eksperiment bestående af en ordforståelsestest hvor 171 norske og 147 svenske gymnasieelever lytter til danske ord som de skal oversætte til sit modersmål. I alt testes 30 ord som indeholder forskellige svækkede konsonanter, eller som af andre anledninger kan forventes at være svære at forstå. Ordene bliver testet isoleret, altså uden kontekst. Konklusionen er at nordmænd også forstår talt dansk bedre end svenskere når leksikale forskelle mellem sprogene er udlignede. Selvom der på overfladen er forskel på de norske og svenske informanters forståelse af talt dansk, kan der også ses en del ligheder i forhold til deres perception og forståelse af de enkelte ord.
