    Authors: Nils Johansson;

    This study examines the notion of substitutionalism, which assumes that the introduction of sustainable alternatives will inherently displace unsustainable production and consumption systems. By studying the emergence of two historical examples of sustainable consumption, book and video rental, this study offers a unique opportunity to understand the effects of sharing from a distance and as a dominant consumption practice. The findings show that commercial lending did not displace new sales; instead, it transformed these subjects into mass-consumer products. Rental offered a lower price, greater supply, established new branches, and turned reading books and watching movies at home into consumer cultures. Producers initially resisted rental, but seized shares of the income as rental grew, and controlled the rental market so that cannibalization of the conventional consumption practices was avoided. This research challenges the core assumption of substitutionalism and highlights the need for a deeper understanding of market dynamics. QC 20240403

    Over the past half century, the global environment has become subject to an accelerated pace of mediation and datafication. This ongoing transition has become so comprehensive that the knowledge, management and governance of the Earth system is dependent on enormous flows of data from a “vast machine” of measuring tools. These processes combined have formed what we call a “mediated planet,” subject to interpretation and shared human decision-making – that should ideally be democratic, inclusive and accountable. As environmental datafication continues to accelerate, private corporations are gaining increasing influence on and power over the associated collections of data. This is a cause for concern, as the global environmental commons are a public interest of concern to all people. This article argues for the need to critically research the challenges and risks associated with the rapid datafication of the environment, specifically in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for climate change (13), the ocean (14), biodiversity (15) and inclusive and accountable institutions (16). More knowledge is needed of how the SDGs and their supporting networks influence data-generation on a mediated planet, and how issues of access to and use of environmental data, as well as data ownership and AI implementation, can best be navigated. We contend that such knowledge can help enhance the democratic potential of the SDGs to build public trust and secure broad participation in global environmental governance in ways that also support peaceful and inclusive societies, as promised by SDG 16.     Authors: Lidström, Isak;

    Sports historians have argued that the type of ball games commonin the British Isles, which were practiced by two teams andin which the ball was driven with sticks towards predeterminedgoals – i.e., hurling, shinty, bandy and hockey – were never playedin early modern Sweden. By highlighting descriptions of ballgames in Johannes Schefferus’s The History of Lapland (1674), asource previously ignored by sports historians, this article challengessuch a claim. One of the games described by Schefferus hassome similarities with the violent stick-and-ball game known inIcelandic sagas as knattleikr. Even greater similarities (such as thestart of the game with a face-off and the goals consisting of lineson the short edges) emerge when the game is compared with theScottish game of shinty. Thus, pre-modern Scandinavia does notappear to have been as isolated in terms of sports and games ashas been suggested by Swedish sports historians.

    Manuell granskning av användarrecensioner för att extrahera relevant informationkan vara en tidskrävande process. Denna rapport har undersökt om stora språkmodeller kan användas för att sammanfatta, extrahera och analysera nyckelinformation från recensioner, samt hur en sådan applikation kan konstrueras. Det visade sig att olika modeller presterade olika bra beroende på mätvärden ochviktning mellan recall och precision. Vidare visade det sig att fine-tuning av språkmodeller som Llama 3 förbättrade prestationen vid klassifikation av användbara recensioner och ledde, enligt vissa mätvärden, till högre prestation än större språkmodeller som Chat-Bison. För engelskt översatta recensioner hade Llama 3:8b:Instruct, Chat-Bison samt den fine-tunade versionen av Llama 3:8b ett F4-makro-score på 0.89, 0.90 och 0.91 respektive. Ytterligare ett resultat är att de större modellerna Chat-Bison, Text-Bison och Gemini, presterade bättre i fallet för generering av sammanfattande texter, än de mindre modeller som testades vid inmatning av flertalet recensioner åt gången. Generellt sett presterade språkmodellerna också bättre om recensioner först översattes till engelska innan bearbetning, snarare än då recensionerna var skrivna i originalspråk där de majoriteten av recensionerna var skrivna på svenska. En annan lärdom från förbearbetning av recensioner är att antal anrop till dessa språkmodeller kan minimeras genom att filtrera utifrån ordlängd och betyg. Utöver språkmodeller visade resultaten att användningen av vektordatabaser och embeddings kan ge en större överblick över användbara recensioner genom vektordatabasers inbyggda förmåga att hitta semantiska likheter och samla liknande recensioner i kluster. Manually reviewing user reviews to extract relevant information can be a time consuming process. This report investigates if large language models can be used to summarize, extract, and analyze key information from reviews, and how such anapplication can be constructed. It was discovered that different models exhibit varying degrees of performance depending on the metrics and the weighting between recall and precision. Furthermore, fine-tuning of language models such as Llama 3 was found to improve performance in classifying useful reviews and, according to some metrics, led to higher performance than larger language models like Chat-bison. Specifically, for English translated reviews, Llama 3:8b:Instruct, Chat-bison, and Llama 3:8b fine-tuned had an F4 macro score 0.89, 0.90, 0.91 respectively. A further finding is that the larger models, Chat-Bison, Text-Bison, and Gemini performed better than the smaller models that was tested, when inputting multiple reviews at a time in the case of summary text generation. In general, language models performed better if reviews were first translated into English before processing rather than when reviews were written in the original language where most reviews were written in Swedish. Additionally, another insight from the pre-processing phase, is that the number of API-calls to these language models can be minimized by filtering based on word length and rating. In addition to findings related to language models, the results also demonstrated that the use of vector databases and embeddings can provide a greater overview of reviews by leveraging the databases’ built-in ability to identify semantic similarities and cluster similar reviews together.

    Denna masteruppsats undersöker det ökade användandet av A-traktorer och mopedbilar iDanderyds kommun. Undersökningen har genomförts med hjälp av kvalitativa metoder föratt analysera detta fenomen ur ett etnografiskt perspektiv för att förstå den påverkan somA-traktorer och mopedbilar har på infrastrukturen, den fysiska miljön och trafiksäkerheten iDanderyds kommun.Genom analysen av enkätundersökningar bland eleverna i Danderyds kommun, intervjuermed relevanta aktörer och myndighetsrepresentanter har data samlats in för att kartläggaanvändningsmönster, drivkrafter och eventuella konsekvenser av ökat antal A-traktorer ochmopedbilar på vägarna i Danderyds kommun.Resultaten av studien visar att ökningen av både A-traktorer och mopedbilar kan ha flerakonsekvenser för Danderyds kommun i form av ökad trängsel på vägar och parkeringar,förändringar i trafikflöden, ökad belastning på vägnätet, samt potentiella säkerhetsrisker förbåde förare och andra trafikanter.Slutsatserna från studien framhåller vikten av att åtgärder implementeras kring bådeA-traktorer och mopedbilar i stadsplanering, som till exempel en trafikpolitik somsäkerställer en hållbar mobilitet en säker trafikmiljö i Danderyds kommun och liknandeurbana områden. Dessutom är det av vikt att utbildningen för både A-traktorer ochmopedbilar förändras och ger en ökad kunskapsnivå. This master's thesis examines the increased use of A-tractors and moped cars in Danderydmunicipality. The study has been conducted using qualitative methods to analyze thisphenomenon from an ethnographic perspective, to understand the impact that A-tractors andmoped cars have on the infrastructure, the physical environment and road safety in themunicipality of Danderyd.Through the analysis of surveys among students in the municipality of Danderyd, interviewswith relevant stakeholders and government representatives, data is collected to map usagepatterns, drivers and possible consequences of increased numbers of A-tractors and mopedcars on the roads in the municipality of Danderyd.The results of the study highlight that the increase in both A-tractors and moped cars canhave several consequences for the municipality of Danderyd, including increased congestionon roads and parking lots, changes in traffic flows, increased strain on the road network, aswell as potential safety risks for both drivers and other road users.The conclusions from the study emphasize the importance of measures being implementedaround both A-tractors and moped cars in urban planning and traffic policy to ensuresustainable mobility and a safe traffic environment in Danderyd municipality and similarurban areas, as well as the importance of a change in education for both A-tractors andmoped cars and an increased level of knowledge

Accessibility to places for physical activity is important to fulfil the human need for movement, where a physical lifestyle generates several positive health aspects.In the Swedish context, sedentary behaviour is a major public health problem, with young people in particular not being physically active enough, and more than one in five inhabitants being sedentary for at least ten hours a day. Thus, the role of transport systems in terms of accessibility to sports venues is of great importance, where physical activity is favoured by good access to public transport as well as safe and secure walking and cycling routes that connect different destinations. The aim of the study is therefore to contribute to a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to planning for accessibility and sustainable travel linked to sports grounds, especially in relation to children and young people. The study is based on a case study as a research strategy, where two sports grounds in Stockholm municipality, and one sports ground in Solna municipality are studied. The results show that accessibility as a concept has many meanings, which can contribute to problems in planning, and that there is a lack of clarity in the responsibilities of actors in terms of measures to promote sustainable travel. The study concludes that there is a need for a framework for what accessibility means in relation to sports grounds, and a need for better targeted measures for sustainable travel, which need to interact with initiatives, and take place at the expense of car traffic.

    Authors: Evens, Siegfried;

    Water is essential to produce nuclear energy and prevent nuclear disasters. As light water reactors are increasingly seen as a solution to achieving a sustainable energy transition and battling the climate crisis, it is more important than ever to investigate the risks of using water for nuclear power production. However, the reactor technologies that manage all that water and steam – pressure vessels, steam generators, pipes, valves, and pumps – have not received much attention from historians, STS scholars, and risk sociologists. Therefore, this dissertation aims to study the risk regulation of these crucial reactor components and materials by national and international actors from a historical perspective. Relying on archival sources from the US, France, Sweden, and multiple international organisations, as well as on interviews, this dissertation aims to write a new, longue durée history of nuclear safety, going back to the origins of water and steam risk management in the nineteenth century. Such a historical perspective on nuclear risk regulation reveals two important insights. Firstly, in the 1950s and 1960s, the usage of water and steam technologies in nuclear reactors revealed new types of risks. These ‘ambi-nuclear risks’ are a hybrid of older steam risks, such as leaks, breaks, and explosions, and new risks of radiation and contamination. Secondly, between the 1950s and 1980s, new regimes were created in the US, France, and Sweden to regulate these risks. Initially, during the 1950s, non-nuclear steam regulations were applied directly to the first nuclear power plants. Yet, as power plants increased in size, accidents occurred, and nuclear technologies became increasingly controversial, ‘ambi-nuclear risk regimes’ were created to adapt or ‘nuclearise’ the older regulations. They included new safety measures and methodologies that were directed toward preventing radiation releases, but at the same time they mobilised older technologies, institutions, knowledges, and ideas related to thermal hydraulics and metallurgy. Ambi-nuclear risk regimes were shaped by a wide variety of historical actors through negotiating boundaries between ‘nuclear’ and ‘non-nuclear’ knowledges, components, risks, and regulations. Private or semi-private engineering associations played a particularly vital role in this. This thesis thus shows how nuclear safety as we know it today became nuclear as the result of a transnational long-term process that was greatly determined by much older non-nuclear water and steam risks. The results of this dissertation contribute to ongoing scholarly debates on risk, nuclear technologies, and water in fields like History of Technology, Environmental3History, STS, and Risk Sociology. Most importantly, the thesis expands the time frame in which nuclear risk has traditionally been studied. It challenges dominant conceptions of nuclear power as innovative or exceptional, instead connecting questions of nuclear risk to longer historical developments in water management and industrialisation. This demonstrates the importance of historical contingency for understanding risk and preventing (nuclear) disasters. Vatten krävs för att producera kärnenergi och förhindra olyckor. Eftersom lättvattenreaktorer alltmer ses som en lösning för att uppnå en hållbar energiomställning och bekämpa klimatkrisen är det viktigare än någonsin att undersöka vilka risker användningen av vatten för kärnkraftsproduktion innebär. Teknikerna som används för att hantera allt vatten och ånga för att förhindra större kärnkraftsolyckor - tryckkärl, ånggeneratorer, rör, ventiler och pumpar - har dock inte fått mycket uppmärksamhet från historiker, STS- forskare och risksociologer. Därför syftar denna avhandling till att studera ur ett historiskt perspektiv hur dessa komponenter och deras risker hanterades och styrdes av nationella och internationella aktörer. Med hjälp av arkivkällor från Sverige, USA, Frankrike och flera internationella organisationer, samt intervjuer, presenterar denna avhandling fram en ny, långsiktig historia om kärnsäkerhet, som går tillbaka till ursprunget för riskhantering kring vatten och ånga under 1800-talet. Ett sådant historiskt perspektiv på riskreglering av kärnkraft ger två viktiga insikter. För det första innebar användningen av vatten- och ångteknik i kärnreaktorer att en ny typ av risker uppstod. Dessa "ambi-nukleära risker" är en hybrid av äldre ångrisker, som läckage, brott eller explosioner, och nya risker för strålning och kontaminering. För det andra, mellan 1950- och 1980-talen skapades system i USA, Frankrike och Sverige för att reglera dessa risker. Till en början, under 1950-talet, tillämpades icke-nukleära ångbestämmelser direkt på de första kärnkraftverken. Men i takt med att kraftverken blev större, olyckor inträffade och kärntekniken blev alltmer kontroversiell skapades "ambi-nukleära riskregimer" för att anpassa eller "nuklearisera" de äldre bestämmelserna. De omfattade nya säkerhetsåtgärder och metoder som var inriktade på att förhindra radioaktiva utsläpp, men samtidigt mobiliserade de äldre tekniker, institutioner, kunskaper och idéer med anknytning till termisk hydraulik och metallurgi. Ambi-nukleära riskregimer utvecklades av en mängd olika historiska aktörer genom förhandlingar om gränser mellan "nukleär" och "icke-nukleär" kunskap, komponenter, risker och regleringar. Privata eller halvprivata ingenjörsorganisationer spelade en särskilt viktig roll i detta sammanhang. Denna avhandling visar således att kärnkraftsäkerhet har blivit kärnteknisk eller nukleär som ett resultat av en transnationell och långsiktig process som i hög grad bestämdes av äldre icke-nukleära vatten- och ångregimer. Resultaten av denna avhandling bidrar till pågående vetenskapliga debatter om risk, kärnteknik och vatten inom teknikhistoria, miljöhistoria, STS och5risksociologi. Avhandlingens viktigaste bidrag är att den har vidgat den tidsram med vilken kärnkraftsrisker traditionellt har studerats. Den har utmanat dominerande uppfattningar om kärnkraft som innovativ eller exceptionell, och istället kopplat frågor om kärnkraftsrisk till längre historiska utvecklingar inom vattenhantering och industrialisering. Detta visar på betydelsen av historiska omständigheter för att skapa nya risker och förhindra (kärnkrafts)katastrofer. L'eau est essentielle pour la production d'énergie nucléaire et pour la prévention des catastrophes nucléaires. Cependant, les technologies des réacteurs qui gèrent l’eau et la vapeur – cuves sous pression, générateurs de vapeur, tuyaux, tubes, vannes et pompes – n'ont pas reçu beaucoup d’attention des personnes historiennes, chercheures STS, et sociologues du risque. Par conséquent, cette thèse propose d’étudier dans une perspective historique la réglementation des risques associés à ces composants et matériaux cruciaux par les acteurs nationaux et internationaux. S'appuyant sur des sources archivistiques provenant de la France, des États- Unis, de la Suède, et des organisations internationales, ainsi que sur une série d’entretiens, cette thèse propose une nouvelle histoire « longue durée » de la sûreté nucléaire, en remontant aux origines de la gestion des risques liés à l'eau et à la vapeur au dix-neuvième siècle. Une telle perspective historique quant à la réglementation des risques nucléaires révèle deux éléments importants. Premièrement, dans les années 1950 et 1960, l'utilisation des technologies de l'eau et de la vapeur dans les réacteurs nucléaires a révélé de nouveaux types de risques. Ces « risques ambi-nucléaires » sont un ensemble hybride des anciens risques liés à la vapeur, tels que les fuites, les ruptures et les explosions, et des nouveaux risques de radiation et de contamination. Deuxièmement, entre les années 1950 et 1980, de nouveaux régimes ont été créés aux États-Unis, en France et en Suède pour réglementer ces risques. Dans un premier temps, au cours des années 1950, des réglementations relatives à la vapeur ont été appliquées directement aux premières centrales nucléaires. Cependant, avec l'augmentation de la taille des centrales, les accidents et la controverse croissante autour des technologies nucléaires, des « régimes de risque ambi-nucléaire » ont été créés afin d'adapter ou de «nucléariser» les anciennes réglementations. Ceux-ci comprenaient de nouvelles mesures de sûreté et des méthodes visant à prévenir les rejets de radiations, mais mobilisant en même temps des technologies, des institutions, des connaissances et des idées plus anciennes liées à l'hydraulique thermique et à la métallurgie. Les régimes de risque ambi-nucléaire ont ainsi été façonnés par une grande variété d'acteurs historiques qui ont négocié les frontières entre les connaissances, les composants, les risques et les réglementations «nucléaires» et «non-nucléaires». Les associations de personnes ingénieures privées ou semi-privées ont joué un rôle particulièrement important à cet égard.7Cette thèse montre donc comment la sûreté nucléaire est devenue « nucléaire ». Les résultats de cette thèse contribuent aux débats scientifiques sur le risque, les technologies nucléaires et l'eau dans l'histoire de la technologie, l'histoire de l'environnement, STS et la sociologie du risque. La thèse élargit le cadre temporel avec lequel le risque nucléaire a été traditionnellement étudié. Elle remet en question les conceptions dominantes de l'énergie nucléaire comme innovante ou exceptionnelle, en reliant plutôt les questions de risque nucléaire à des développements historiques plus longs dans le domaine de la gestion de l'eau. Cela démontre l'importance de la contingence historique pour la création de nouveaux risques, l'évaluation de la « nucléarité » et la création de connaissances, de pratiques et de réglementations pour prévenir les catastrophes nucléaires.     Authors: Söderberg, Hanna;

    Stockholms befolkning ökar, vilket skapar ett behov av fler bostäder, arbetsplatser och attraktiva offentliga miljöer. Kommunen har bland annat mål om en effektiv markanvändning i stadsbyggandet, vilket innebär att de vill utnyttja platser som är eller har varit industriområden. Ett exempel på ett sådant område är gasverket i Norra Djurgårdsstaden, som är en del av Sveriges största stadsutvecklingsprojekt samtidigt som det dessutom har synnerligen höga kulturhistoriska värden. Denna rapport undersöker hur kulturhistoriska byggnader och miljöer kan bevaras och integreras i samtida byggprojekt, dels genom att titta på hur olika aktörers intressen påverkar och dels genom att titta på hur gasverket i Norra Djurgårdsstaden har anpassat de kulturhistoriska byggnaderna och miljöerna efter nutida behov. För att göra detta har dokumentstudier, platsobservationer och intervjuer genomförts. Resultatet visar att de olika intressena som finns i stadsutvecklingsprojekt påverkar möjligheten att bevara och integrera kulturhistoriska byggnader och miljöer genom att det krävs kompromisser som många gånger påverkar kulturmiljön negativt. Vidare visar studien att gasverksområdet har anpassat de kulturhistoriska byggnaderna och miljöerna efter nutidens behov på flera olika sätt. Exempelvis används olika typer av platsmarknadsföring och förtätning samt att flertalet håltagningar tillåts i byggnadernas fasader. För nya byggnader som tillkommer är ambitionen att låta dem smälta in med den befintliga arkitekturen. Anpassningarna som görs för att möta de nutida behoven görs dock på bekostnad av de kulturhistoriska värdena. Stockholm’s population is increasing which creates a need for more housing, workspaces and good public spaces. The municipality wants to use the land efficiently and to accomplish this, old industrial land is often used. One example of this is the former gas plant in Norra Djurgårdsstaden, which is a part of Sweden's largest urban development project as well as being a cultural heritage site. This study examines how cultural heritage sites can be preserved and adapted to meet contemporary needs, specifically in the former gas plant. The study also examines how different conflicts of interest affect the possibility to integrate heritage sites in contemporary urban planning. To do this, document studies, interviews and observations were conducted. The result shows that the many conflicts of interest entail compromises that often diminish the cultural heritage. The study also shows that the gas plant project has used many different approaches to preserve and adapt the cultural heritage to contemporary needs. For example, place marketing and densification have been used as well as changes in the facades of the buildings. Even though new buildings should blend in with the existing architecture, the overall adaptations have been made at the expense of the cultural heritage.

    As the world becomes increasingly digitalized, new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) are now more than ever before an important tool for organizations to meet future challenges. This is true for the private as well as the public sector, however, certain organizational functions are falling behind on AI-adoption, with public procurement being a standout example. This study examines the feasibility of integrating AI-solutions in public procurement. Using the theoretical lens of technology adoption and the AI-adapted Technology Organization Environment (TOE)-framework, a series of interviews were conducted with procurement practitioners, experts and solutions providers, identifying what factors drive or inhibit AI-adoption. The results confirmed that the previously identified TOE-factors relative advantage, management support, and external pressure are drivers of AI-adoption in public procurement, while competence, resources and procurement regulation are inhibitors. Additionally, three new factors were identified in the interviews; available solutions, resistance to change and public policy. The findings of the study contributed to the proposal of an updated TOE-framework for AI-adoption in public procurement. They further confirm the findings of previous studies utilizing the TOE-framework to investigate public organizations. I takt med att världen blir alltmer digitaliserad är nya teknologier som artificiell intelligens (AI) nu viktigare verktyg än någonsin för organisationers förmåga att bemöta framtida utmaningar. Detta gäller både den privata och den offentliga sektorn, men vissa organisatoriska funktioner ligger efter när det gäller AI-implementation, där den offentliga upphandlingsfunktionen är ett tydligt exempel. Denna studie undersöker möjligheterna att integrera AI-lösningar inom offentlig upphandling. Genom att använda organisationell teori om teknologiadoption som teoretisk lins och mer specifikt det AI-anpassade (TOE)-ramverket genomfördes en serie intervjuer med upphandlingspraktiker, experter och produktägare för att identifiera vilka faktorer som driver eller hämmar AI-implementation. Resultaten bekräftade att de tidigare identifierade TOE-faktorerna relativ fördel, ledningsstöd och extern press är drivkrafter för AI-implementation inom offentlig upphandling, medan kompetens, resurser och upphandlingsregler är hinder. Dessutom identifierades tre nya faktorer i intervjuerna; tillgängliga lösningar, motstånd mot förändring och offentlig styrning. Studiens resultat bidrog vidare till att föreslå ett uppdaterat TOE-ramverk för AI-implementation inom offentlig upphandling. Den bekräftar vidare resultaten från tidigare studier som använder TOE-ramverket för att undersöka teknikinförande inom offentliga organisationer.

    Authors: Nils Johansson;

QC 20240403

    Over the past half century, the global environment has become subject to an accelerated pace of mediation and datafication. This ongoing transition has become so comprehensive that the knowledge, management and governance of the Earth system is dependent on enormous flows of data from a “vast machine” of measuring tools. These processes combined have formed what we call a “mediated planet,” subject to interpretation and shared human decision-making – that should ideally be democratic, inclusive and accountable. As environmental datafication continues to accelerate, private corporations are gaining increasing influence on and power over the associated collections of data. This is a cause for concern, as the global environmental commons are a public interest of concern to all people. This article argues for the need to critically research the challenges and risks associated with the rapid datafication of the environment, specifically in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for climate change (13), the ocean (14), biodiversity (15) and inclusive and accountable institutions (16). More knowledge is needed of how the SDGs and their supporting networks influence data-generation on a mediated planet, and how issues of access to and use of environmental data, as well as data ownership and AI implementation, can best be navigated. We contend that such knowledge can help enhance the democratic potential of the SDGs to build public trust and secure broad participation in global environmental governance in ways that also support peaceful and inclusive societies, as promised by SDG 16.     Authors: Lidström, Isak;
