As a response to prolonged crises, such as the global economic crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, this chapter focuses on tracing the psychological, behavioural, sociological and spatial perspectives of resilience, advancing our current understanding of resilience theory within the marketing and consumption context of crises and austerity. The chapter reviews recent research exploring the importance of resilience, and more specifically the notion of persistent resilience in response to long-term stressors, such as unemployment, triggered by the austerity measures imposed by European governments following the global economic crisis as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. In advancing previous research in this area, we offer a broader perspective by underlining the impetus for businesses and communities to employ a range of resilience strategies while also highlighting the importance for individuals to develop a sustainable set of resilience capacities to help creatively navigate the market and flexibly adapt to the long-term effects of intense and long-standing crises.

In hospitals, for example, Moxi, a social delivery robot, can deliver medication, supplies or lab samples. In nursing, a social robot can care for old people: for example, a robot called Pepper helped patients with dementia. In July 2016 Galway was awarded the Irish designation for European Capital of Culture for 2020. Over 1900 events across 154 projects had been planned throughout the year. The Wave Makers volunteer programme was created to help with the delivery of the event. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent restrictions imposed by the Irish government, required Galway 2020 to postpone events. The event was later ‘reimagined’ to run from September 2020-April 2021, with most of the events taking place either online or in person under strict social distancing rules. This case study demonstrates how the Wave Makers programme adapted in line with these COVID-19 restrictions.

The pandemic has affected all areas of life with workplace standards requiring a complete overhaul. This study will attempt to ascertain compliance with natural ventilation and social distancing requirements through the completion of an experimental research study, utilising Computational Design (CD) tools. A GD study will be undertaken to provide the designer with numerous office layout design solutions to evaluate and evolve. The findings will be examined through a semi structured focus group study with industry professionals. All visual programming algorithms shall be repeatable and adaptable to be utilised on an individual project’s unique situations. The author hopes this study will show that in theory, computational compliance checking, and computational design can be a viable workflow for designers.
