These files contain the SPIRIT checklist and study flow diagram for the SONIA Trial. This trial is a pragmatic randomized controlled trial of standard care versus steroids plus standard care for treatment of pneumonia in adults admitted to Kenyan hospitals.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified hundreds of loci associated with Crohns disease (CD), however, as with all complex diseases, deriving pathogenic mechanisms from these non-coding GWAS discoveries has been challenging. To complement GWAS and better define actionable biological targets, we analysed sequenced data from more than 30,000 CD patients and 80,000 population controls. We observe rare coding variants in established CD susceptibility genes as well as ten genes where coding variation directly implicates the gene in disease risk for the first time.

Background Young people spend much of their formative years in education, making schools appealing environments for health promotion. The World Health Organisation’s Health Promoting Schools framework has been proposed as a useful model. We sought to explore secondary school teachers’ experiences of implementing this model and their attitudes to health promotion.\ud \ud Objectives To explore teachers’ experiences and perceptions of health promotion and compare practice with the HPS framework for school health.\ud \ud Design Qualitative study with semi-structured interviews\ud \ud Setting Nine state comprehensive schools in Bristol and surrounding areas.\ud \ud Participants 25 teaching staff from school senior leadership teams, those working in health education and other subject teachers.\ud \ud Analysis Thematic analysis using NVivo 10.\ud \ud Results Teachers largely described educational approaches with less emphasis on school ethos or environment. Staff supported a role for schools in promoting health but felt restrained by limited family engagement, contradictory school practices, resource constraints and conflicting government policies.\ud \ud Conclusions Future reforms should ensure health is mainstreamed across school strategies, if we are to create the conditions that promote future generations’ health. Public health must build alliances with educationalists to support the priority-setting of health in school inspections, policy and practice.
