Publisher: Virginia TechCountry: United StatesThis research project was completed in conjunction with an ongoing research effort in Virginia cotton using remote sensing to predict nitrogen (N) application rates. It was conducted to provide additional N prescription data by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for Northeastern, North Carolina. The study was conducted in Scotland Neck, Halifax County, NC (36.1331597, -77.5026541). This county produces 95,000 bales during in 2021 (USDA NASS, 2022). As one of the largest acreage counties in NC, it was ideal for the UAV study and its algorithm creation. The objective was to determine if N rates prescribed by NDVI readings from a UAV flight resulted in improved and/or similar cotton yields than grower standard N rates in North Carolina and Virginia cotton. There were two treatments during the study with the first being the grower practice of N fertilization and the second being UAV determined N application rate at five weeks after planting (5WAP) with four replications of each treatment. The UAV was flown at 5WAP to determine N rates needed at lay-by/top dress. Nitrogen was applied at a grower standard rate of 92 lbs. N/acre on four control replications and at a UAV prescription rate of 114 lbs. N/acre on four test replications. Harvested acres were summed, bale weights were taken, and lint samples were collected time of harvest. The lint samples were micro-ginned at the Tidewater Research station in Suffolk, Virginia for lint percentage. Nitrogen prescription provided by UAV resulted in an 83 lbs. lint/acre increase over the grower standard, though not statistically different. At a 42.7% turnout, the grower standard N application resulted in a yield of 1,806 lbs. lint/acre and the UAV prescribed N resulted in a yield of 1,889 lbs. lint/acre. This trial will be used as part of a larger data set to encourage validation of UAV prescribed N. MALS

The Peraia of Samothrace Project (HFRI-FM17-750) is a multi-disciplinary archaeological fieldwork project to investigate the diachronic settlement patterns from Prehistory to the Modern Era of the coastal and inland landscape opposite the island of Samothrace in the northern Aegean Sea. It uses integrated and non-invasive methods such as remote sensing, geophysical prospection, and intensive pedestrian field walking to explore the regional topography and the diversity of human occupation. One important aspect of the project addresses the question of Samothracian settlements mentioned in the written sources. This paper presents the results of the 2020–2021 fieldwork campaign, including the methodological framework of the survey, an overview of ancient literary sources and previous archaeological work in the region, and a preliminary report of the archaeological survey as well as a general discussion of the combined outcome of the results.

Understanding the carrying capacity and the stocking rates of crown lands is critical for the beef industry in the Prairies that relies heavily on these lands for grazing. The overall goal of this study was to examine the current carrying capacities and stocking rates of the crown lands in Manitoba. The main objectives of this study were to i) classify each crown land parcel in the province by land cover type or vegetation type and ii) estimate the carrying capacities and stocking rates of each parcel and compare these to the current stocking rates allowed by the provincial crown land leases. This study used remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) technologies for land cover monitoring and estimation of carrying capacities and stocking rates. Based on the assessment of remotely sensed land cover inventories, forest and shrubland were found to be the dominant land cover types in the crown lands compared to native and tame grasslands, which are more desirable for grazing due to higher forage quality and palatability. Then, the carrying capacities were estimated from past field surveys that measured forage productivity in different ecoregions of Manitoba. The carrying capacities were used to calculate the stocking rates based on the delineated land cover types within each crown land parcel. Results show that the current stocking rates of the majority of the crown lands were lower than the estimated stocking rates. This suggests that these parcels were being undergrazed compared to the current grazing intensities permitted by the lease contracts. Overall, the forage resources of the crown lands in Manitoba were being undergrazed by -44.64%. This study can contribute to the existing management of crown lands and it also demonstrated the potential of remote sensing technology to improve and expedite land cover monitoring and stocking rate estimation for crown land managers in the future.

In the current context of an increasingly world competitiveness, companies are under constant pressure to respond quickly to changing conditions, be innovative in meeting customer needs and quickly adjust to the market. This implies that companies are agile and that they often make decisions quickly. However, making these decisions requires a large amount of data, information and knowledge. When operating in a global world, information becomes a fundamental resource for the success of a company's business. This fact leads to the acceptance, on the part of company managers, that whoever has good quality, reliable information at the right time, achieves a competitive advantage. On the contrary, lack of information leads to errors and missed opportunities. Thus, the use of Business Intelligence tools by organizations has proved to be an effective choice whenever it is intended to provide information to support decision making. However, the implementation of this type of tools is complex, with potential financial, procedural and structural impacts on organizations. This way, the general objective of this study was to compare two BI platforms, namely Cognos and Power BI and, in turn, to analyze the generated impact in the transition of BI tools in the processes and in the employees of the financial area of a company in the sector of childcare. The methodological approach was a case study where empirical data were collected from different sources, through document analysis, interviews and questionnaires. The results obtained showed that, from a structural point of view, task execution time and greater productivity are the reasons for preferring the use of the new BI tool, and, from a procedural point of view, privacy, the various functionalities and the automation of processes explain the choice to use the new tool.
