This paper delves into Late Iron Age decorated coarse ware originating from the present day province of Bergamo in central Lombardy. During protohistoric time, this region served as a borderland and a nexus connecting extensive cultural spheres, encompassing both lowland and mountainous terrains. The study presents data sourced from investigations conducted in the lowlands, alongside previously undisclosed finds from the local urban centre of Bergamo. We examine recent finds from the mountain range, encompassing not only the broader region but also focusing on the village of Parre in the Valle Seriana, a crucial place for comprehending the dynamics between lowland plains and mountainous environments. This distinct pottery class exhibits traces of both indigenous and far reaching influences, suggesting its significance in the multifaceted process of Romanization and its role in negotiating cultural identities during this intricate historical phase.

The LT C2 – LT D central settlement near Neubau, in the vicinity of Linz, Upper Austria, with its voluminous pottery ensemble, offers opportunities for the study of La Tène pottery. Important characteristics of the find complex are the high proportion of graphite pottery and the rare occurrence of hand formed vessels. Despite an insufficient state of research on the subject of coarse pottery, interesting tendencies could be detected in the comparison of numerous settlements in southern Germany, north eastern Austria, and the Czech Republic. The high proportion of graphite pottery aligns Neubau with various settlements in south ern Bavaria, southern Bohemia, Lower Austria, and Moravia, and raises the question of the supply of the raw material. The low proportion of hand built vessels finds its best comparisons in Lower Austria and to a certain extent in Moravia. In contrast, hand built pottery played a significant role in the material culture of southern Germany and most parts of Bohemia. Whether this difference can be explained by the way the pottery production was organised or by a specific symbolic content of vessel forms is unclear. The observa tions show, however, that coarse domestic pottery can contribute to the understanding of the Late Iron Age.

At the sources of an original pottery style. Pots with covering impressed and modelled decoration – a specificity of the Senones territory in the 5th century BC? The paper is focused on impressed or modelled covering decorations well represented on pottery in the heart of the Paris Basin during the Second Iron Age. After a phase of emergence in the western Hallstattian province, a concentration of these decorations can be highlighted in the second half of the 5th century in the middle valley of the Seine especially between the confluence of the Seine and the Aube and the confluence of the Seine and the Yonne. Their wider diffusion mainly northwards occurs from the 4th century. The discussion focuses on both the characterization of this phenomenon and its delimitation with a more specific reflection on a possible link at the time of the first flourishing with a ‘Senon’ cultural space.

Preliminary study of Celtic coarse ware pottery from the area of the Roman amphitheatre in Milan The proposed study presents some ceramics from the area of the Roman amphitheatre in Milan, mostly from US 298 (excavation 2020), a pit filled exclusively with La Tène pottery dating from between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. The ollae, in particular, are abundant and complete, whereas in other sites in the Insubri region they are only known from a few fragments. Their abundance makes it possible to understand that this type of vase was produced in different sizes, probably to contain solid food of different types. Some bowls and lids, as well as a jug, imitate fine ware shapes. The coarse pottery is itself of good quality, wheel made and fired at a low temperature. It is probably the continuation of a local, Golasecca culture, production.

The paper in the first place introduces the figure of Guido Sutermeister and his fundamental work. The second part offers a concise summary of the data relating to decorated coarse ware gathered from a preliminary survey of the collections of the Guido Sutermeister museum in Legnano and from a consideration of what has already been written upon the subject to date.

The deer dance (Danza del Venado) is a central ritual of the Yaqui tribe inhabiting parts of Mexico and the USA. Dating back to pre-Columbian times, this dance symbolizes man’s connection with nature, represented here by a dancer in the form of a deer. The choreography of the dance, the sounds and the costumes refer to the life and hunting of this animal. Despite the geopolitical divide, the Yaqui retain strong cultural ties, particularly during the annual Easter (Pascoa) celebrations. A key moment in these celebrations is the presentation of the deer dance. Originally purely ceremonial, this ritual has gradually been integrated into Mexican folklore and has become an important representative of the State of Sonora within the Baile Folklórico dance system. Along with other dances, it is now seen as a part of Mexico’s living cultural heritage. However, its inclusion in the Baile Folklórico system raises questions about the authenticity of the representation of Yaqui customs. This paper will focus on the historical development of the deer dance and its current role within the Yaqui community and broader Mexican society.
