Optical radiation with wavelengths between 200 and 280 nanometers, in the UV-C range, is particularly suitable for eradicating bacteria and viruses, as this radiation breaks protein bonds and can irreversibly damage DNA/RNA chains. Until recently, the commercial UV-C sources were gas lamps, typically based on deuterium, xenon, mercury vapor, or excimers. All of these lamps operate at quite high voltages, are fragile and require several minutes of warming up before working at full power. The availability of solid-state LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) that emit radiation in the UV-C range allows a “lamp” to be made by assembling an array of such light sources, which uses a low-voltage power supply, can be designed in geometric configurations adaptable to any need, turns on/off instantly and is robust. This Technical Report illustrates the work done at ENEA Frascati on the design and assembly of a UVC LED lamp and of its power supply, its characterization and application to a phytosanitary experiment.

This report describes the ENEA Climate Observatory located in Piano Battaglia within the Madonie Regional Park in the territory of Petralia Sottana (PA). The Observatory consists of a weather station installed in June 2016 with the aim of measuring the main meteorological parameters and a prefabricated cabin hosting is a system for collecting air samples in flasks for the subsequent determination, in the ENEA laboratories of Lampedusa, of the concentration of some greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4) according to international standards. The report, while reporting in graphical form the data of weekly measurements of carbon dioxide and methane starting from 2005, analyzes the meteorological parameters in graphical and tabular form from 1 July 2016 to 31 December 2022. The high altitude, the geographical position, the absence of local contamination and the accuracy of the measurements make the “Madonie-Piano Battaglia” station a point of excellence for monitoring and studying the complex mechanisms of climate change at regional and global scale; for these specificities, in 2021 the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) awarded the ENEA Madonie Observatory the official recognition of regional station, representative for the entire central Mediterranean area, within the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW), the global network for the study of the global climate (https://gawsis.meteoswiss.ch/GAWSIS/#/search/station/stationReportDetails/0-380-0-MDN).

This technical Report summarizes the development and implementation of a recycling process applied on end-of-life (EoL) reclaimed carbon fibers reinforced thermoplastics. Scientific activities are carried out within the REVALUE Project and are considered of primary importance in order to comply the Directive 2000/53/EC that sets out measures to prevent and limit waste from end-of-life vehicles and their components, and ensures that where possible this is reused, recycled or recovered [1]. The proposed recycling process consists in the following steps: comminution of materials by mechanical shredding and milling followed by extrusion and compression moulding. All the experimental activities were carried out in the laboratories of the ENEA Research Centre of Brindisi and composite materials considered for these activities were polypropylene (PP) or polyamide 6 (PA6) reinforced with carbon fibers (rCFs) reclaimed by pyrolysis of decommissioned composite materials. In the first part of this document, the main issues encountered and the results of the activities are highlighted, together with the mass and energy balances of the overall operations, with the aim collect as more as possible information in view of potential scale-up of the process. In the second part the attention is focused on the characterization and analysis of intermediate and final products obtained by implementing the recycling process. The main goal of the characterizations are the validation of the effectiveness of the mechanical recycling process, as well as the learning of mechanical and physical properties of recycled components in view of exploitation of the results. Physical (density, fibre length, glass-transition temperature) as well as mechanical parameters (tensile strength, elastic modulus, Charpy impact energy, storage modulus and loss modulus) are measured and hereafter reported, and discussed.

This work presents an industrial research activity aimed at identifying an appropriate electric recharging network to guarantee the circulation of electric cars (hybrid and full electric) from the municipal areas to the entire regional territory of Basilicata. A state of the art on electric recharging infrastructures and the electric vehicles on a national and regional scale is presented. Based on the Italian targets for 2030 defined in the National Infrastructure Plan for the Recharging of Electric Vehicles (PNIRE) and based on electric vehicle forecasts in the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) for both electric mobility and recharging infrastructure, the criteria for upgrading the recharging infrastructure network necessary to cover the geographical areas in the Basilicata have been identified.

This Technical Report proposes the technical specifications and the user manual of the Integrated Regional Energy Cadastre of buildings (CEU) and its contextualization to the Regione Siciliana, identified as the Italian pilot Region, with a view to providing the Public Administration with an integrated tool that allows the interoperability of data from the register of energy performance certificates of buildings (APE-R), from the register of virtual buildings (CEV) and from the register of thermal plants (CIT-R). CEU is an IT platform that collects, at the regional level, Energy Performance Certificates (APE) and data on heating and colling systems, equipped with plant booklet, related to a specific real estate unit, identified in the corresponding real estate registry. This platform is organized in such a way that each real estate unit, equipped with cadastral identifiers (municipality code, cadastral sheet and parcel), is associated with vector data which shows its geometry on interactive cartography, which detects the presence of APEs, just transmitted to the corresponding regional cadastre and plant booklets, registered in the thermal plants cadastre. The platform is accessible by two types of users, with different functions allowed: - Competent Authorities and/or External Organisms, specifically delegated by them, and inspectors, able to search and consult the plant booklets and the energy efficiency control reports and transmit the inspectors' test reports; - Regional Administration for the consultation of all databases and the management of the Competent Authorities.

End-of-life photovoltaic (EoL PV) modules are hazardous waste belonging to the category of WEEE. They contain environmentally toxic substances, poorly biodegradable materials but also valuable materials. The recovery of these last is the main goal of PV-waste treatments having the materials separation as initial stage conditioning the process. In order to facilitate the recovery and produce released fractions that are suitable for the recovery of glass, Si, Ag, Cu, Sn, Pb, and Al, the mechanical technics applied in the management of all WEEE without differentiation by type, are the most commonly used. However, a new and appropriate management strategy is required to create more profitable roads leading to the industrialization of environmentally and economically sustainable processes. The exponential increase in the volume of PV-waste imposes key challenges in the more efficient management of EoL PV modules. This paper aims to expand knowledge on critical point in the PV-waste management processes and provides information on types and trends for their treatment. It aims to help to formulate diversified management strategies and plans, shedding light on the usefulness of the adoption of a hybrid approach to optimize the recovery rate and recovered materials purity level to send to recycling.

This work refers to research activities carried out within the REcycled carbon fibres for high VALUE composites – REVALUE Project, founded by EIT RawMaterials and performed in the period 2017-2019. All the information and data here reported are referred and updated to this period. The main goal of this document is to provide an insight into the market for carbon fibers reclaimed from end-of-life composites. It identifies market outlets for recycled carbon fibers (rCFs) in various industrial sectors, in particular the Automotive, with the aim to investigate potential applications in which the new material would enter as a competitor of components based on metallic materials or polymers reinforced with glass fibers. The following pages will show that thermoplastic compounds reinforced by high value rFCs are the best compromise to changes imposed in the automotive sector, in order to produce structural, sub-structural and accessories components in the automotive industry. In addition, a clear and wide documented analysis of the EU market scenario and market plan of this specific segment in the automotive field will allow justify the possible investment in composite reinforced with recycled carbon fibers. On this basis, the study continues with the deepening of a Case Study: a 7-year long accurate financial analysis of the market introduction of an innovative thermoplastic compound reinforced with rCFs is developed, aiming to evaluate the feasibility of trade of this typology of composite material.

The Asphodelus genus, is an herbaceous plant originating in southern Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, which exhibits a great genetic variability in the Mediterranean area. Its therapeutic properties have been recognised since the ancient times, as it is rich in flavonoids, such as luteolin, isovitexin, quercetin, and phenolic acids (e.g. caffeic, gallic and chlorogenic acids) fatty acids and polysaccharides ('inulin-type fructooligosaccharides'). The European Green Deal, in particular the 'Farm to Fork', established the objective of 50% reduction of pesticides use by 2030. In that context, the use of natural phytoextracts represents a possible alternative to the application of synthetic chemical compounds, coupled with other solutions for a sustainable crop management system. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of aqueous extracts of Asphodelus ramosus roots at different concentrations on both, in vitro development of Botrytis cinerea, a ubiquitous pathogen able to infect many crops, and on eggs and juvenile stages of the Asian bedbug, Halimorpha halys (Stål), an invasive polyphagous insect, for which no efficient control systems are yet available. The results obtained show an inhibitory effect of the A. ramosus extract, according to the concentrations, and a significant insecticidal effect on the Asian bedbug. The extract was also analysed for its physic/chemical characteristics.

This report describes the design and implementation of the PAES web platform developed in the ESPA (Energy and Sustainability for Public Administration) project. The development of web services is one of the focuses of the mission of ENEA (National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development). At this aim, the digitization of energy data management processes, that is, their transformation from static paper systems to hypertexts and applications integrated with algorithms, models and simulations, cannot be ignored. In this context, ENEA created a web portal to support local governments in the digital management of SEAPs (Sustainable Energy Action Plans) that would contribute, through the creation of a database and the design of simulation systems, to the dissemination and replicability of good practices successfully implemented in different contexts.

    Authors: Murra, D.; Aquilini, M.; Bollanti, S.; Di Lazzaro, P.; +4 Authors
