It has been an even more challenging, tiring, exciting and inspirational year, with three back-to-back Residencies consisting of local and international artists. “Proof that inadequate, even childish measures, may serve to rescue one from peril” (Frans Kafka, The Silence of the Sirens, 1931). Kafka’s subversive retelling of the encounter between Odysseus and the alternatively silent Sirens has Odysseus plug his ears with wax and chained to the mast to avoid their call. Since Kafka’s sirens are in fact, silent, Odysseus embodies a symbolic victory that is questionable, caught in an irreconcilable schism between truth and power, the iconic and the futile. Marching On operates within the same questionable margins by querying the body’s functionality as a source of aversion from the possible dangers of information overload. El proyecto XSCAPE, financiado con fondos europeos, reúne a un equipo de arqueólogos, científicos de la visión y filósofos cognitivos para explorar si los mundos que construimos alteran nuestra propia mente y la forma en que procesamos la información. El equipo financiado por el Consejo Europeo de Investigación estudia si nuestros edificios, carreteras y artefactos cambian los patrones de pensamiento y atención. El equipo del proyecto, que tiene previsto realizar una serie de más de cuarenta estudios de casos globales, utiliza un conjunto de materiales —de diferentes culturas y entornos antiguos y nuevos— para explorar los cambios cognitivos impulsados por la materialidad. XSCAPE utiliza una nueva metodología sinérgica que combina múltiples estudios de casos del mundo real con la neurociencia visual más reciente y simulaciones simples basadas en agentes. Statehorn is an European Research Project that aims to analyze the reasons for failure in the contemporary states in the Horn of Africa through the archaeological study of their historical dynamics during the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Modern Age. Statehorn is a multidisciplinary project than involves specialists from many different fields and disciplines. Between the 13th and the 16th centuries, the Horn of Africa went through a series of major transformations which made of this zone one of the most dynamic regions in the continent. El 5 de noviembre de 2024 el INCIPIT-CSIC organiza el Workshop RURARQ 2024 – La modernización en los paisajes rurales del Noroeste ibérico: una lectura de tiempos largos, que se vincula al proyecto Arqueología histórica de los paisajes rurales en el noroeste ibérico (ss. XVI-XXI) (RURARQ), financiado por la Axencia GAIN de la Xunta de Galicia. Se trata de un encuentro de trabajo, en el que fundamentalmente se ponen en común los resultados preliminares del proyecto, en relación con sus cuatro ventanas de estudio (Allande, Asturias; Babia, León; Extremo-Arcos de Valdevez, Portugal; y Terra de Montes, Pontevedra).
