    WOS:000545984600012 PubMed: 32584721 Objectives: This study aims to biomechanically and histopathologically investigate the effects of methylene blue (MB) on preventing postoperative adhesion in chickens undergoing full - thickness flexor tendon incision. Materials and methods: This study was performed between June 2017 and June 2018 on Hubbard JA 57 type chickens (age, 6 months; weight, 2.2?0.3 kg). Sixty-four tendons were studied in 32 chickens, including 16 in the control group and 16 in the experimental group. The second and third finger flexor digitorum profundus tendons of the left foot of each chicken were repaired primarily after a full -thickness incision approximately 1 cm proximal to the distal adhesion area. In the control (n=32) and experimental groups (n=32), 0.25 mL of normal saline and 0.25 mL of 1% MB solutions were applied locally to the surgical site, respectively. The operated limb was immobilized using a circular cast. 16 chickens were randomly selected in each group and examined at the fourth week, and the remaining 16 chickens were examined at the sixth week. Thirty-two of these tendons were evaluated using the Tang histopathological adhesion classification system, and the other 32 were evaluated with a biomechanical pull system. Results: Adhesion was found to be less in the experimental group compared to the control group at the end of the fourth and sixth weeks both histopathologically and biomechanically. Furthermore, adhesion was significantly less in the experimental group at the end of the sixth week compared to the fourth week both histopathologically and biomechanically. Conclusion: Histopathological and biomechanical results show that MB, which has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antimicrobial and antioxidant effects, reduces adhesion during the healing process after tendon repair. We think that local MB application, particularly in surgeries performed after this type of injury, will be beneficial on early rehabilitation and functional results.

    The rapid development of new digital tools and infrastructures in recent years and their application to a variety of disciplines has transformed how we store, access and retrieve information available to us. This has also shaped the ways how knowledge in a diverse cultural context is presented, used and re-used. The exploreAT! project builds upon not only Austrian, but also European cultural identity from the aspect of language, in particular dialects. Unlike standard languages, dialects are in times of globalization under considerable threat of diminishing, and this ultimately poses a risk to the intangible record that is language and through which a history of tangible culture is expressed. In this paper we elaborate on the possibilities digital means and the infrastructure and services of the EGI-Engage project offer in revealing and giving access to unique traditional cultural knowledge contained in a non-standard language resource on the example of the Bavarian dialects in Austria (DBO). Digital tools and services allow our heterogeneous corpus of data to be virtually exploited and preserved. The flexibility of the internet allow these data to become not only visible, but searchable and extractable. Through the digitization efforts, and use of European infrastructures the hidden cultural narratives within the data can be uncovered, enriched and shared for the benefit of knowledge society.

    The ongoing EU funded project “INCEPTION – Inclusive Cultural Heritage in Europe through 3D semantic modelling” proposes a workflow aimed at the achievements of efficient 3D digitization methods, post-processing tools for an enriched semantic modelling, web-based solutions and applications to ensure a wide access to experts and non-experts. Nevertheless, the generation of high quality 3D models can still be very time-consuming and expensive, and the outcome of digital reconstructions is frequently provided in formats that are not interoperable, and therefore cannot be easily accessed. This challenge is even more crucial for complex architectures and large heritage sites, which involve a large amount of data to be acquired, managed and enriched by metadata. In order to face these challenges and to start solving the issues of the large amount of captured data and time-consuming processes in the production of 3D digital models, an Optimized Data Acquisition Protocol (DAP) has been set up. The purpose is to guide the processes of digitization of Cultural Heritage, respecting needs, requirements and specificities of cultural assets, by dealing with issues such as time-consuming processes and limited budget available for 3D documentation, accuracy of 3D models, integration of metadata and semantics into the 3D model and links with multimedia information. The DAP can be followed during the planning and performing of a 3D laser scanner survey of Cultural Heritage, and it is referred to architectural, archaeological, urban and site scales.

    AbstractTropical peatlands are currently being rapidly cleared and drained for the establishment of oil palm plantations, which threatens their globally significant carbon sequestration capacity. Large-scale land conversion of tropical peatlands is important in the context of greenhouse gas emission factors and sustainable land management. At present, quantification of carbon dioxide losses from tropical peatlands is limited by our understanding of the relative contribution of heterotrophic and autotrophic respiration to net peat surface CO2 emissions. In this study we separated heterotrophic and autotrophic components of peat CO2 losses from two oil palm plantations (one established in ‘2000’ and the other in 1978, then replanted in ‘2006’) using chamber-based emissions sampling along a transect from the rooting to non-rooting zones on a peatland in Selangor, Peninsular Malaysia over the course of 3 months (June–August, 2014). Collar CO2 measurements were compared with soil temperature and moisture at site and also accompanied by depth profiles assessing peat C and bulk density. The soil respiration decreased exponentially with distance from the palm trunks with the sharpest decline found for the plantation with the younger palms with overall fluxes of 1341 and 988 mg CO2 m−2 h−1, respectively, at the 2000 and 2006 plantations, respectively. The mean heterotrophic flux was 909 ± SE 136 and 716 ± SE 201 mg m−2 h−1 at the 2000 and 2006 plantations, respectively. Autotrophic emissions adjacent to the palm trunks were 845 ± SE 135 and 1558 ± SE 341 mg m−2 h−1 at the 2000 and 2006 plantations, respectively. Heterotrophic CO2 flux was positively related to peat soil moisture, but not temperature. Total peat C stocks were 60 kg m−2 (down to 1 m depth) and did not vary among plantations of different ages but SOC concentrations declined significantly with depth at both plantations but the decline was sharper in the second generation 2006 plantation. The CO2 flux values reported in this study suggest a potential for very high carbon (C) loss from drained tropical peats during the dry season. This is particularly concerning given that more intense dry periods related to climate change are predicted for SE Asia. Taken together, this study highlights the need for careful management of tropical peatlands, and the vulnerability of their carbon storage capability under conditions of drainage.

The digital transformation of research and its resources means that many of the artifacts, documents, materials, etc. that interest humanities research can now be combined in new and innovative ways. Due to the digital transformations, (big) data and information have become central to the study of culture and society. Humanities research infrastructures manage, organise and distribute this kind of information and many more data objects as they becomes relevant for social and cultural research.

    International audience; The german biography portal “Deutsche Biographie” is a joint effort of the Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Bavarian State Library and supported by cultural heritage institutions to develop a historical and biographical information system for the German-speaking world. It includes digital full texts of more than 48.000 articles about persons and families of two biographical dictionaries and indices from associated institutions. We will describe our objectives in adopting state-of-the-art methods in Digital Humanities (DH): metadata modeling, text-encoding, identifying individuals and places in authority files and aggregating further biographical information from freely available, persistent, scientific and source-based websites and databases. The portal offers an entry point for historical biographical research by providing programmable web services to foster current approaches in DH like linked open data/semantic web, historical network research. computational linguistics. The potential of it lies in its coordinated biographical data management and integration. The common database is gradually enlarged in a collaborative and modular manner together with partners in Germany and Europe. We will discuss on how the collection information can be curated in order to serve and facilitate future research trends.

    International audience; Once upon a time, the preservation, the study, and the digitization of books were primarily justified by utilitarian needs: to obtain a qualification, or to hold down a job — or to share ideas, or to satisfy a hedonistic need derived from the pleasure of reading. Nowadays the building of corpora and the digitization of collections could replace books by « data », the consultation of which threatens a close engagement with the linearity of text. I will comment on examples chosen from the library of Le Mans, and from my own collection, to question this apparent under valuing of reading in favour of results derived by means of tools only partly under human control.; La conservation, l’étude et la numérisation des livres ont été avant tout justifiées par un besoin social ou individuel de lecture : utilitaire, pour obtenir un diplôme et avoir un métier, pour diffuser des idées, besoin hédoniste issu du plaisir de la lecture. Actuellement la constitution des corpus et la numérisation de collections pourraient remplacer les livres par les « données », dont la consultation mettrait en danger un rapport au texte qui était avant tout « linéaire ». Des exemples pris dans les fonds de la bibliothèque du Mans ou personnels permettent d’alimenter le débat autour de ce qui apparaît comme une déqualification de la lecture, au profit de résultats obtenus grâce à un outillage plus ou moins bien maîtrisé par l’humain.

    International audience; The Karjala database contains digitized demographic data of the parish registers from the regions ceded to the Soviet Union in 1944. The objectives of the digitization project have been to promote access to digitized records for scientific research and genealogy as well as encouraging research on the people of the ceded Karelia region. The main sources for the database have been catechetical lists, lists of children, and registers of vital statistics (registers of births, marriages, migrations and deaths) that are available in Digital Archives of the National Archives of Finland from the period of 1681 – 1949. The data in the database amounts to about 10.3 million entries, but only data older than 100 years is published openly on the Internet. According to decisions by the Finnish data protection authorities, the Personal Data Act is applied to personal registers less than 100 years old. The digitization process is still going on; it has been calculated that there are 1.2 million entries still to be processed. The database is available to users via https://katiha.mamk.fi/. At present, there are about 6.5 million file entries available on the Internet, each presenting data about one individual, e.g. names, the date of birth and death, the cause of death, age, gender, marital status, occupation, residence, migration, the parish. The Karjala database can be exploited for diverse research purposes; it improves access to the church records that are sometimes very difficult to read. Information in the database can be utilized for historical research, medical genetics, social sciences, and family and onomastics. The database is can be utilized for clarifying family structures, migratory patterns or child mortality. The database also offers excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary research. Our presentation will describe the digitization process management of old, handwritten documents that consist of non-structured data from a historical period that contains varied linguistic material: several languages from a historical period where nations, states and languages were still evolving, different calendars and spelling rules etc. We will also introduce our plans to use text recognition technology so that the handwritten documents such as the Karjala database will be incorporated into the international READ project network http://read.transkribus.eu/network/. We will also discuss the challenges encountered in this type of heterogeneous data and the possibilities for more defined and structured data management that could enable the automated use of the database. We will also include in our presentation a description of the evolution of the different phases of the database, emphasizing the evolution of the database and its linkage with internet technologies e.g. how they have either hindered or enabled the digitization project.

    Succeed awards 2014 Nomination; The BVH project have been rewarded with the Succeed award 2014. This prize recognizes the successful implementation of a digitisation programme, especially those exploiting the latest technology and the output of research for the digitisation of historical text.The BVH (Bibliothèques Virtuelles Humanistes: Virtual Humanistic Libraries) is a research program devoted to the digitization and electronic publication of original source documents from the Renaissance period. Since 2003, its website has published digital facsimiles, selected Early Modern imprints (1450-1650) mainly from regional collections, and transcriptions of French texts of the same period, encoded according to the XML-TEI standard. Particular attention is paid to achieving great accuracy in the bibliographical description as regards the true states of originals and the closest correspondence between two distinct corpora, facsimile and text, linked by several levels of metadata in the main catalogue. The BVH team works in close collaboration with researchers from the Computer Science Laboratory of Tours (LI-Tours) to develop new technologies in the fields of image processing and pattern recognition. Open source software for layout analysis and text transcriptions, AGORA and RETRO, enables us to perform automatic extraction of graphic components from digitized books, and thus to build up specialized databases of iconographic and typographical material. As a member of the TEI consortium, we actively contribute to the development of a specialised schema for the transcription of Renaissance documents. Each step of processing and every component developed at the BVH is also intended for use by the whole digital community, creating a model for the digital library of the future.; Les Bibliothèques Virtuelles Humanistes (BVH) se sont vues décernées le prix Succeed 2014, soutenu par l’Union Européenne, qui récompense « la mise en œuvre réussie d’un programme de numérisation exploitant les nouvelles technologies et les travaux de recherche en matière de numérisation des documents historiques ».Le programme de recherche BVH numérise des documents patrimoniaux et publie des éditions électroniques de documents de la Renaissance. Depuis 2003, les BVH publient sur leur site internet une sélection de Fac-similés numériques - imprimés du début des temps modernes (1450-1650), principalement issus de fonds régionaux - et des éditions de textes français de la même période, encodés en XML selon les recommandations de la Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). Une attention particulière est portée à la description bibliographique respectant l'état original des sources et à la conservation de la correspondance entre les deux corpus distincts, fac-similés et textes, liés par leurs métadonnées communes. L'équipe BVH travaille en étroite collaboration avec l'équipe de recherche sur la Reconnaissance des Formes et Analyse d'Images du Laboratoire d'Informatique de Tours (LI Tours, équipe RFAI) pour le développement de nouveaux outils. Agora et Retro, logiciels open source, nous permettent d'extraire automatiquement les éléments (caractères et illustrations) des livres numérisés et ainsi, de constituer des bases de données spécialisées iconographiques et de matériel d'imprimerie. Membre du Consortium TEI, les BVH contribuent activement au développement d'un schéma pour l'édition de documents de la Renaissance. Les méthodologies et outils développés dans le cadre de ces recherches sont mises à la disposition de tous.

The potential of it lies in its coordinated biographical data management and integration. The common database is gradually enlarged in a collaborative and modular manner together with partners in Germany and Europe. We will discuss on how the collection information can be curated in order to serve and facilitate future research trends.

    International audience; Once upon a time, the preservation, the study, and the digitization of books were primarily justified by utilitarian needs: to obtain a qualification, or to hold down a job — or to share ideas, or to satisfy a hedonistic need derived from the pleasure of reading. Nowadays the building of corpora and the digitization of collections could replace books by « data », the consultation of which threatens a close engagement with the linearity of text. I will comment on examples chosen from the library of Le Mans, and from my own collection, to question this apparent under valuing of reading in favour of results derived by means of tools only partly under human control.; La conservation, l’étude et la numérisation des livres ont été avant tout justifiées par un besoin social ou individuel de lecture : utilitaire, pour obtenir un diplôme et avoir un métier, pour diffuser des idées, besoin hédoniste issu du plaisir de la lecture. Actuellement la constitution des corpus et la numérisation de collections pourraient remplacer les livres par les « données », dont la consultation mettrait en danger un rapport au texte qui était avant tout « linéaire ». Des exemples pris dans les fonds de la bibliothèque du Mans ou personnels permettent d’alimenter le débat autour de ce qui apparaît comme une déqualification de la lecture, au profit de résultats obtenus grâce à un outillage plus ou moins bien maîtrisé par l’humain.

    International audience; The Karjala database contains digitized demographic data of the parish registers from the regions ceded to the Soviet Union in 1944. The objectives of the digitization project have been to promote access to digitized records for scientific research and genealogy as well as encouraging research on the people of the ceded Karelia region. The main sources for the database have been catechetical lists, lists of children, and registers of vital statistics (registers of births, marriages, migrations and deaths) that are available in Digital Archives of the National Archives of Finland from the period of 1681 – 1949. The data in the database amounts to about 10.3 million entries, but only data older than 100 years is published openly on the Internet. According to decisions by the Finnish data protection authorities, the Personal Data Act is applied to personal registers less than 100 years old. The digitization process is still going on; it has been calculated that there are 1.2 million entries still to be processed. The database is available to users via https://katiha.mamk.fi/. At present, there are about 6.5 million file entries available on the Internet, each presenting data about one individual, e.g. names, the date of birth and death, the cause of death, age, gender, marital status, occupation, residence, migration, the parish. The Karjala database can be exploited for diverse research purposes; it improves access to the church records that are sometimes very difficult to read. Information in the database can be utilized for historical research, medical genetics, social sciences, and family and onomastics. The database is can be utilized for clarifying family structures, migratory patterns or child mortality. The database also offers excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary research. Our presentation will describe the digitization process management of old, handwritten documents that consist of non-structured data from a historical period that contains varied linguistic material: several languages from a historical period where nations, states and languages were still evolving, different calendars and spelling rules etc. We will also introduce our plans to use text recognition technology so that the handwritten documents such as the Karjala database will be incorporated into the international READ project network http://read.transkribus.eu/network/. We will also discuss the challenges encountered in this type of heterogeneous data and the possibilities for more defined and structured data management that could enable the automated use of the database. We will also include in our presentation a description of the evolution of the different phases of the database, emphasizing the evolution of the database and its linkage with internet technologies e.g. how they have either hindered or enabled the digitization project.

    Succeed awards 2014 Nomination; The BVH project have been rewarded with the Succeed award 2014. This prize recognizes the successful implementation of a digitisation programme, especially those exploiting the latest technology and the output of research for the digitisation of historical text.The BVH (Bibliothèques Virtuelles Humanistes: Virtual Humanistic Libraries) is a research program devoted to the digitization and electronic publication of original source documents from the Renaissance period. Since 2003, its website has published digital facsimiles, selected Early Modern imprints (1450-1650) mainly from regional collections, and transcriptions of French texts of the same period, encoded according to the XML-TEI standard. Particular attention is paid to achieving great accuracy in the bibliographical description as regards the true states of originals and the closest correspondence between two distinct corpora, facsimile and text, linked by several levels of metadata in the main catalogue. The BVH team works in close collaboration with researchers from the Computer Science Laboratory of Tours (LI-Tours) to develop new technologies in the fields of image processing and pattern recognition. Open source software for layout analysis and text transcriptions, AGORA and RETRO, enables us to perform automatic extraction of graphic components from digitized books, and thus to build up specialized databases of iconographic and typographical material. As a member of the TEI consortium, we actively contribute to the development of a specialised schema for the transcription of Renaissance documents. Each step of processing and every component developed at the BVH is also intended for use by the whole digital community, creating a model for the digital library of the future.; Les Bibliothèques Virtuelles Humanistes (BVH) se sont vues décernées le prix Succeed 2014, soutenu par l’Union Européenne, qui récompense « la mise en œuvre réussie d’un programme de numérisation exploitant les nouvelles technologies et les travaux de recherche en matière de numérisation des documents historiques ».Le programme de recherche BVH numérise des documents patrimoniaux et publie des éditions électroniques de documents de la Renaissance. Depuis 2003, les BVH publient sur leur site internet une sélection de Fac-similés numériques - imprimés du début des temps modernes (1450-1650), principalement issus de fonds régionaux - et des éditions de textes français de la même période, encodés en XML selon les recommandations de la Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). Une attention particulière est portée à la description bibliographique respectant l'état original des sources et à la conservation de la correspondance entre les deux corpus distincts, fac-similés et textes, liés par leurs métadonnées communes. L'équipe BVH travaille en étroite collaboration avec l'équipe de recherche sur la Reconnaissance des Formes et Analyse d'Images du Laboratoire d'Informatique de Tours (LI Tours, équipe RFAI) pour le développement de nouveaux outils. Agora et Retro, logiciels open source, nous permettent d'extraire automatiquement les éléments (caractères et illustrations) des livres numérisés et ainsi, de constituer des bases de données spécialisées iconographiques et de matériel d'imprimerie. Membre du Consortium TEI, les BVH contribuent activement au développement d'un schéma pour l'édition de documents de la Renaissance. Les méthodologies et outils développés dans le cadre de ces recherches sont mises à la disposition de tous.
