Work integrated learning (WIL) is an educational approach that integrates learning with practical work experiences. Within the structure of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in the Republic of Ireland, WIL is facilitated through School Placement (SP). SP is widely recognised as sitting at the fulcrum of ITE. It is primarily valued by partners in education as the opportunity to put learnt pedagogy and foundational knowledge into practice within a school setting and as such is a form of authentic assessment. Moreover, it is an opportunity for student teachers (STs) to become socialised into the profession as active partners in educational practice. The Teaching Council, as the regulator of the teaching profession in the Republic of Ireland, has emphasised the role of the ST as researcher and pedagogical collaborator, moving the focus of SP away from a singular consideration of practice within the classroom and towards a whole school and system wide approach. This expands the potential scope of SP towards a reciprocal relationship whereby the ST has agency to impact on the actions of the site of practice by sharing new and emerging practice and pedagogy from their research and studies. However, beyond these lofty ideals, SP is a formative assessment and determines the success of STs in obtaining their professional qualifications. Given the centrality of SP to ITE, the prevailing lack of consistency and clarity around the partnership model, the roles of partners and the future of SP, are worthy of exploration. This paper presents current doctoral research and preliminary results on the impact of the partnership model on the efficacy of SP as a robust form of assessment and proposes the introduction of a new SP partnership framework

Ano 11 – vol. 12 – n. 80/2023 Hoje o tempo amanheceu diferente.

This research has investigated the productive dynamics of the sugarcane agribusiness and its effects on the social reproduction of peasant groups in the administrative region of Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo, an important territory hegemonized by sugarcane, which has been the stage of several agrarian conflicts in the state. To pursue this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with representative agents for the topic at hand, as well as field visits and analysis of secondary data. Using a historical-dialectical paradigm, the aim of this article is to demonstrate that in the region in question, an intensive, predatory neoextractivist activity is located, led by the sugarcane sector which, in its production logic, disrupts and hinders peasant production and social reproduction. The conclusions indicate that, even outside frontier zones, there have been severe impacts on local peasant groups, resulting in dispossession, land concentration, and conflicts of various kinds.

This research investigates the determinants of women's empowerment within households in a developing country. The investigation specifically focuses on the impact of employment and fertility, considering constraints imposed by family rules that play a pivotal role in shaping women's empowerment. The theoretical framework outlined in this study posits a simplistic model demonstrating that, within the prevailing family structure and household composition, earned income and fertility may bear significant relevance. Utilizing data extracted from the Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement Survey, we engage in estimating the level of female empowerment, operationalized as the extent of female authority over household expenditures. Notably, our empirical approach accounts for the endogeneity of employment and fertility through a two-stage estimation process. This involves leveraging information on family rules—representative of a family's cultural norms—pertaining to work and childbearing. Our empirical findings affirm the viability of family-specific rules as instruments to estimate and subsequently predict employment and fertility. Importantly, the evidence gleaned underscores the critical role of selecting valid threat options in theoretical analyses of women's empowerment.

We present the MemoriEase retrieval system used for our participation in the NTCIR Lifelog-5 Task. We report our method to address the lifelog retrieval problem and discuss our official results of the MemoriEase at Lifelog-5 task. We originally introduced the MemoriEase system for the Lifelog Search Challenge (LSC) as an interactive lifelog retrieval system. We have modified it to an automatic retrieval system to address the NTCIR Lifelog-5 Task. We propose the BLIP-2 model as the core embedding model to retrieve lifelog images from textual queries. The open-sourced Elasticsearch search engine serves as the main engine in the MemoriEase system. Some pre-processing and post-processing techniques are applied to adapt this system to an automatic version and improve the accuracy of retrieval results. Finally, we discuss the results of the system on the task, some limitations of the system, and lessons learned from participating in the Lifelog-5 task for further improvements for the system in the future.

With the explosive growth of protein-related data, we are confronted with a critical scientific inquiry: How can we effectively retrieve, compare, and profoundly comprehend these protein structures to maximize the utilization of such data resources? PS-GO, a parametric protein search engine, has been specifically designed and developed to maximize the utilization of the rapidly growing volume of protein-related data. This innovative tool addresses the critical need for effective retrieval, comparison, and deep understanding of protein structures. By integrating computational biology, bioinformatics, and data science, PS-GO is capable of managing large-scale data and accurately predicting and comparing protein structures and functions. The engine is built upon the concept of parametric protein design, a computer-aided method that adjusts and optimizes protein structures and sequences to achieve desired biological functions and structural stability. PS-GO utilizes key parameters such as amino acid sequence, side chain angle, and solvent accessibility, which have a significant influence on protein structure and function. Additionally, PS-GO leverages computable parameters, derived computationally, which are crucial for understanding and predicting protein behavior. The development of PS-GO underscores the potential of parametric protein design in a variety of applications, including enhancing enzyme activity, improving antibody affinity, and designing novel functional proteins. This advancement not only provides a robust theoretical foundation for the field of protein engineering and biotechnology but also offers practical guidelines for future progress in this domain.

BACKGROUND: The healthcare system in Ireland was profoundly affected by COVID-19. This study aimed to explore the impact of the pandemic on cancer surgery in Ireland, from 2019 to 2022 using three national health data sources. METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional study design was used and included: (i) cancer resections from the National Histopathology Quality Improvement (NHQI) Programmes; (ii) cancer surgery from the National Cancer Registry Ireland (NCRI), and (iii) cancer surgery from Hospital Inpatient Enquiry (HIPE) System. Cancer surgery was presented by invasive/in situ and invasive only cancers (NCRI & HIPE), and by four main cancer types (breast, lung, colorectal & melanoma for NCRI & HIPE data only). RESULTS: The annual number of cancer resections (NHQI) declined by 4.4% in 2020 but increased by 4% in 2021 compared with 2019. NCRI data indicated invasive/in-situ cancer surgery for the four main cancer types declined by 14% in 2020 and 5.1% in 2021, and by 12.3% and 7.3% for invasive cancer only, compared to 2019. Within HIPE for the same tumour types, invasive/in situ cancer surgery declined by 21.9% in 2020 and 9.9% in 2021 and by 20.8% and 9.6% for invasive cancer only. NHQI and HIPE data indicated an increase in the number of cancer surgeries performed in 2022. CONCLUSIONS: Cancer surgery declined in the initial pandemic waves suggests mitigation measures for cancer surgery, including utilising private hospitals for public patients, reduced the adverse impact on cancer surgery.
