    Travel literature is a rich and popular genre and a valuable source of information for various disciplines. This project seeks to approach this topic through the study of the case of Cyprus. The chronological scope covers the period between the 15th (invention of printing) to the 21st century. The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation has secured a contract for a new research project titled “Re-inventing age-old Travelling Paths of the Levant in the Digital Era: the example of Cyprus” (ReTraPath). The project secured funding after a call for proposals as part of the “Excellence Hubs” programme of the “RESTART 2016-2020” programme of the Institute of Research and Innovation. The postdoctoral proposal received a high score and was ranked fifth among the proposals eligible for funding in the area of Human and Social Sciences, reaffirming that the Cultural Foundation is at the vanguard of research excellence and that it remains highly regarded as a research organisation. The project coordinator is Dr Ioanna Hadjicosti, director of the Cultural Foundation, and principal researcher is Dr Margarita Ioannou. ReTraPath aims to address in a scientific way an important aspect of travel literature, by researching the history of ideas and culture in Cyprus from the 15th century to the information age of the 21st century. The main sources to be used are written texts and manuscripts in various European languages (other than Slavic) produced by travellers who visited the island between the 15th and 20th centuries, as well as print or digital texts from the 21st century. The rare books to be researched belong to the Collection of Manuscripts and Incunabula of the Cultural Foundation, the Collection of the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation and the Costas and Rita Severis Foundation. The project is a partnership with the Centre for Scientific Dialogue and Research and researcher Dr Katerina Gotsi, as well as with the University of Piraeus Research Centre, under the supervision of associate professor Dimitrios Vergados of the University’s Department of Informatics. The technological objectives are: 1) The digitization of a specific number of old travel books which have not been digitized before, as a substantial contribution to the preservation of the cultural wealth of travel literature (ReTraPath enriches further INSPIRAL (online portal for travel literature developed by the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation) which was initiated by Zefyros research programme (Sylvia Ioannou Foundation - University of Cyprus, under the scientific supervision of Professor Julia Chatzipanagioti-Sangmeister); 2) The dissemination of the outcomes through the development of smart tools. With the use of technology, the collected material will be employed for the development of a) a game (educational application) designed for students aged 9-12 years old and b) two 3-dimensional interactive maps of Cyprus for the wider public with areas of tourist and cultural interest. The innovation of the suggested project lies in a) the interdisciplinary consortium, b) the novel scientific approach to texts that cover a specific topic (travel) and geographical area (Eastern Mediterranean) and which span a period of seven centuries, c) the use of information technology and augmented reality in the dissemination of findings, and d) the means of dissemination and utilization of results in relation to both international audiences and local society. Institutional repositories were created to collect, preserve, and make available the academic institution's scientific output. The purpose of this study is to investigate and illustrate how Greek academic libraries with institutional repositories deal with copyright challenges. The study aims to identify and describe if institutional repository managers apply a certain copyright clearance protocol, the problems they encounter, and how they deal with them. For this study, a quantitative research method based on questionnaires was employed. The questionnaire consisted of twenty-nine (29) questions separated into three (3) sections and was sent to thirty-one (31) academic libraries. According to the survey results, the majority of academic libraries have an institutional repository and provide open access to its content. It was found that academic institutional repositories face intellectual property difficulties. The biggest issue highlighted was a lack of knowledge of the notion of copyright. Finally, communication amongst libraries seems to be the foundation for developing a common policy and addressing the difficulties that have arisen in institutional repositories as a result of Greek copyright legislation limits.

    AbstractIn Greece, there are many audiovisual resources available on the Internet that interest scientists and the general public. Although freely available, finding such resources often becomes a challenging task, because they are hosted on scattered websites and in different types/formats. These websites usually offer limited search options; at the same time, there is no aggregation service for audiovisual resources, nor a national registry for such content. To meet this need, the Open AudioVisual Archives project was launched and the first step in its development is to create a dataset with open access audiovisual material. The current research creates such a dataset by applying specific selection criteria in terms of copyright and content, form/use and process/technical characteristics. The results reported in this paper show that libraries, archives, museums, universities, mass media organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations are the main types of providers, but the vast majority of resources are open courses offered by universities under the “Creative Commons” license. Providers have significant differences in terms of their collection management capabilities. Most of them do not own any kind of publishing infrastructure and use commercial streaming services, such as YouTube. In terms of metadata policy, most of the providers use application profiles instead of international metadata schemas.

    Περιέχει το πλήρες κείμενο. Scholarly journals are usually rated on the basis of the number of citations received which directly translates to impact in the advancement of research. In this paper, the emphasis is on considering citations as a means for unveiling journal-to-journal associations. An Academic Libraries Consortium could use such kind of information in the process of planning for the collection of journal titles (subscriptions) that best serves the needs of its research user community. The innovative contribution is summarized as follows: (a) journal research impact measures are considered in the context of the well-defined user community (Target Authors Group, TAG) of the Hellenic Academic Libraries Link (HEAL-Link) Consortium, and (b) research impact measures are used to reveal interesting journal-to-journal associations, as well as journals of an interdisciplinary value, specifically for the microcosm of the given TAG community. The research outcomes are publicized by means of a number of interactive graphs via the J2J-GR web service (https://j2j.heal-link.gr). The latter is expected to be of use not just for the HEAL-Link office staff, but also for all the interested researchers, in Greece or abroad.

    Authors: Vardakosta, Ifigenia;

    Human life and activities (politics, environment, transports, economy etc) are related to a geographical location thus making geographic information inseparable from daily life of every citizen around the globe. Libraries, especially those of the western world, have developed those functions and services necessary to enable users to access and manage the essential for their education and research activity geographical information. The commitment of geographical libraries to the continuous improvement of their services is also reflected in their integration in similar scientific associations and collaborative structures. The presentation aims to communicate the "Geographical Libraries Group" as a response of Greek academic libraries to the users growing need for access to geographic information, both print and digital. So, the current presentation, after a short introduction to the Map/GIS Libraries in the western world, will focus on the reasons that led to Groups’ implementation and present its members. Greek Academic Geographical Libraries Group fundamental goals and purposes will be highlighted while the actions that have already been accomplished will be pointed out. Finally, some upcoming actions of the Group will be presented.

    The process of discovering appropriate resources in digital libraries within universities is important, as it can have a big effect on whether retrieved works are useful to the requester. The improvement of the user experience with the digital library of the University of Novi Sad dissertations (PHD UNS) through the personalization of search results representation is the aim of the research presented in this paper. There are three groups of PHD UNS digital library users: users from the academic community, users outside the academic community, and librarians who are in charge of entering dissertation data. Different types of textual and visual representations were analyzed, and representations which needed to be implemented for the groups of users of PHD UNS digital library were selected. After implementing these representations and putting them into operation in April 2017, the user interface was extended with functionality that allows users to select their desired style for representing search results using an additional module for storing message logs. The stored messages represent an explicit change in the results representation by individual users. Using these message logs and ELK technology stack, we analyzed user behavior patterns depending on the type of query, type of device, and search mode. The analysis has shown that the majority of users of the PHD UNS system prefer using the textual style of representation rather than the visual. Some users have changed the style of results representation several times and it is assumed that different types of information require a different representation style. Also, it has been established that the most frequent change to the visual results representation occurs after users perform a query which shows all the dissertations from a certain time period and which is taken from the advanced search mode; however, there is no correlation between this change and the client’s device used.

    Περιέχει τη περίληψη. This paper presents and reports on the ongoing project of the Greek translation of the Resource Description and Access (RDA) Reference as pursued by its author. It discusses the first outcomes of the effort during the four-year period from 2016-2020. It focuses on the steps followed; the procedures and various technical issues; as well as the knowledge, expertise, and skills gained by the liaison-translator as the project evolved. It aims to contribute to RDA-related documentation as implemented in the case of the Greek translation of the RDA vocabularies and to encourage greater involvement by and within the Greek library and information science sector. © 2021 The Author(s). Περιέχει το πλήρες κείμενο. Currently "Big Data" is an emerging field that presents several Information Technology challenges regarding the capture, storage search, structure, and visualization of this data. The real challenge for organizations is to find ways to extract value from it and provide better services to their clients. The data generated in academic and other institutions is vast and complex. Libraries face new challenges as they seek to determine their role in the handling of Big Data within their organization and use it to develop services. Thus, in most organizations, libraries will not have the knowledge to build new services unaided. Furthermore, libraries have always been information handlers and technology adopters; therefore, Big Data technologies will certainly affect their context. The purpose of this paper is to explore all these issues through a systematic literature review, unveiling the theories that underpin the paper's argument. It attempts to answer several research questions, such as how librarians are involved in the Big Data era? And what are the future research developments of Big Data within the library context? The study considered only papers published between 2012 and 2018 in English and presents the collected literature by grouping them according to the type of library each paper refers to. Thus, it identifies new and evolving roles in the context of all types of libraries. In addition, the study presents several interesting tables, which aim to help librarians locate relevant articles that will inform their practice and guide service development for users of large and complex datasets.

    PurposeThe study aims to explore Greek libraries’ social media presence and library operation and social media use during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown.Design/methodology/approachPrimary data were collected via an online questionnaire that was distributed to the Greek libraries. The final sample comprised 189 libraries of all types with the exception of school libraries.FindingsResults indicated that Facebook is the most widely used platform, while social media are mainly used for sharing announcements about library operations and for the promotion of events. During the COVID-19 lockdown, libraries responded quickly to the new circumstances by taking many of their services online. However, they did not fully use social media for service provision but rather used social media as a static communication channel. Only a few of the libraries grasped the opportunity to highlight their role in the promotion of public health by providing timely and reliable information.Practical implicationsLibrary leaders who are looking to harness the power of social media for service promotion and outreach should build a strategy that takes platform popularity, current social media trends, patron preferences and the specific promotional objectives of their library into consideration.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, the current research is the first which attempts to explore the social media presence of Greek libraries of all types and changes made to library operations and social media use in response to the COVID-19 lockdown.
