Avtorica v prispevku uvodoma poda argumentacijo za obravnavo etnografskega gradiva Pavla Medveščka - Klančarja kot verodostojnega vira o zahodnoslovenski naravoverski kontrakulturi. Opredeli se do besedne zveze “posoško staroverstvo” oziroma “zahodnoslovensko naravoverstvo”. Zahodnoslovensko naravoversko skupnost nato teoretizira kot potencialno prvotno obliko družbenosti in foucaultovsko heterotopijo. V jedru prispevka analizira specifike teritorialne administracije in politične organiziranosti ter predstavi poglavitne ideološke prvine naravoverske kontrakulture. V sklepu naslovi pomen odnosa naravovercev do narave in naravoverskega sistema vodenja za sodobno (slovensko) družbo. In the introduction, the author explains arguments in favour of considering Pavel Medvešček Klančar‘s ethnographic opus as an authentic source on Western Slovenian nature worshippers’ counterculture. She then argues for denomination “Western Slovenian Nature Worship” as opposed to “Old Believers from the Soča River region”. Next, she theorizes the Western Slovenian nature worshippers‘ community as potential primordial societal form and Foucauldian heterotopia. Central focus of the text is on specifics of territorial administration of the nature worshippers’ community, their political organisation as well as principal ideological elements of the nature worshippers‘ counterculture. In the conclusion, the author discusses the importance of nature worshippers‘ attitude towards nature and their governance system for the contemporary (Slovenian) society.

Zadnjega četrt stoletja se v slovenskem javnem diskurzu veliko govori o preteklosti, zlasti v povezavi z drugo svetovno vojno. Razprava je vroča in živa, argumenti udarni, pa - kot kaže - ne vedno najbolj prepričljivi. Saj če bi bili, bi pogled v preteklost zagotovo bil jasnejši, kakor je. Zdaj, sredi vroče razprave pa ni jasno niti, ali se je druga svetovna vojna v Sloveniji, denimo, sploh že končala ali pa so nepopustljivi borci novico o koncu vojne v žaru borbe kar preslišali. Vojna se je, seveda, že zdavnaj končala, zmagovalci so si razdelili odlikovanja, poraženci pa so zacelili rane. Nadaljuje pa se boj za interpretacijo. Zato spomini na preteklost predstavljajo mešanico fantazij, želja in zavestnih potvarjanj resničnosti. Vsaka stran skuša uveljaviti svoje videnje preteklosti, da bi z njegovo pomočjo legitimizirala svoje videnje sedanjosti in prihodnosti. Toda, če se ne zadovoljimo s tem, kar vidimo na prvi pogled, lahko odkrijemo, da so stvari potekale na ta način že dolgo tega. In the Slovene public discourse of the past quarter century there has been much talk of the past, particularly in connection with the Second World War. The debate is heated and lively, the arguments striking, but - it seems - not always sufficiently convincing. For if they were, then the view of the past would undoubtedly be clearer than it is. Now, in the midst of heated debate, it is not even clear, for example, whether the Second World War in Slovenia ever really finished, or whether some indomitable old fighters caught up in the struggle simply failed to hear the news about the war's end. Of course, the war was over long ago the victors distributed medals, the losers licked their wounds. But the battle for interpretation continues. And thus memories of the past are a mixture of fantasy, wishful thinking and conscious distortions of the truth. Each side tries to validate its view of the past, in order to use it to legitimise its vision of the present and the future. But, as long as we are not satisfied merely with what can be seen at first glance, it becomes clear that things have proceeded in this fashion for quite a substantial period of time.

Prispevek opisuje zgodovino revije Slovene Studies in predstavlja ideje za njeno prihodnost. Revija je strokovno glasilo Društva za slovenske študije (Society for Slovene Studies, SSS), ki ga je ustanovila skupina strokovnjakov leta 1973 v New Yorku.1 Revija je začela izhajati leta 1975 kot Papers in Slovene Studies in se je leta 1978 preimenovala v Slovene Studies, tako izhaja nepretrgoma že skoraj 40 let. Seminar slovenskega jezika, literature in kulture je v razvoju revije igral posredno, vendar pomembno vlogo. Kolegi na Filozofski fakulteti in organizatorji Seminarja so se v reviji pojavljali kot avtorji prispevkov ob prispevkih strokovnjakov na drugih fakultetah Univerze v Ljubljani in Mariboru, Slovenske akademije znanosti in umetnosti, Inštituta za novejšo zgodovino in drugih evropskih in ameriških akademskih ustanov. Na drugi strani pa se člani Društva za slovenske študije že desetletja udeležujejo Seminarja, med njimi tudi uredniki revije, in lahko bi trdili, da je sodelovanje na Seminarju vplivalo tudi na njihovo urednikovanje. This article describes the history of the journal Slovene Studies and presents ideas for its future. The journal is a scholarly publication of the Society for Slovene Studies, which was founded by a group of scholars in New York in 1973. The journal began to appear in 1975 as Papers in Slovene Studies and was renamed Slovene Studies in 1978. It is thus approaching its fortieth year of publication. The SSLLC played an indirect but key role in the journal's development. Colleagues at the Faculty of Arts and seminar organisers have been authors of articles in the journal, as have scholars from other parts of the University of Ljubljana, the University of Maribor, the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Institute of Contemporary History, and other European and North American academic institutions. Likewise, SSS members, including the journal%s editors, have been attending the SSLLC for decades. The latter can attest that participation in the SSLLC has influenced their work as editors.

Valvasorja lahko na več ravneh povežemo s pojmom "prihodnost". Izhodišče je nekaj znanih podatkov iz njegovega življenjepisa, nekaj listin, s katerimi razpolagamo, in seveda to, kar nam o sebi razkriva on sam, predvsem skozi svoje glavno delo Slavo vojvodine Kranjske. Na podlagi omenjenega skušam dojeti njegovo gledanje na svojo osebno prihodnost in na prihodnost ljubljene dežele Kranjske. Iz vsega, kar vemo o njem, se nam prikaže lik človeka, ki intenzivno proučuje preteklost in se živahno udeležuje sedanjosti, hkrati pa ima pri vseh svojih odločitvah - bodisi s področja zasebnega življenja bodisi v zvezi s svojim raziskovanjem - pogled uperjen v prihodnost. Prispevek se zaključi z nekaj citati iz njegovega opusa, ki nam lahko nudijo razmislek o naši lastni prihodnosti. This contribution offers some thoughts on Valvasor and the future. Starting from some well-known biographical aspects, from available documents - especially his key work The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola - and what these reveal about Valvasor himself, the author seeks to make clear the natural historian and polymath's attitude towards his own future and that of his beloved homeland. The result is a personal portrait that - although profoundly interested in the past and spiritedly involved in the present - shows how all his personal choices, those concerning his private life and also those concerning his research and studies, were always informed by attention to the future. The contribution concludes with quotations from his work which can help provide ensuing generations with a starting point for reflection on our own future.

Prispevek tematizira razmerje med skupnostjo in jezikom kot njenim mogočim konstitutivom v srednjeveškem in zgodnjenovoveškem imaginariju. Pri tem na primeru Slovencev pokaže, kako so se identitete oblikovale na različnih ravneh in zaradi različnih dejavnikov. Jezik je zmerom bil razumljen kot možni temelj skupnosti, ni pa bilo takšno pojmovanje vedno in povsod uveljavljeno kot prevladujoče % kakor tudi danes ni. Univerzalni model oblikovanja skupnosti ne obstaja, ker je vsaka zgodovina unikatna. Takšne so tudi vizije in predstave o tem, kaj določena skupnost hoče doseči. Tudi te sodijo med njihove konstitutive. This article considers the relationship between community and language as a possible constitutive element in the medieval and early modern age mind set. The example of the Slovenes shows how identities took shape on different levels and due to different factors. Language was always understood as a possible foundation of community, but this idea never prevailed absolutely - just as it does not today. There is no universal model for the forming of community because each history is different - just as visions and perceptions of what a particular community wishes to achieve are different. And these also represent constitutive elements.

Prispevek se osredotoča na izjemen zgodovinski fenomen slovenskega izseljevanja, ki ga predstavlja pojav aleksandrinstva, in približa glavne vzroke, zakaj so se žene in dekleta odločile za odhod od doma ter za poklice, ki so jih opravljale v Egiptu. V nadaljevanju je pozornost usmerjena k vplivu aleksandrink na družino delodajalca in njihovim edinstvenim lastnostim, zaradi katerih so bile v Egiptu še posebej zaželene. Predstavljena je tudi materialna kulturna dediščina, ki ima pomembno vlogo pri ohranjanju in utrjevanju spominov na aleksandrinke in omogoča edinstven pogled v življenje slovenskih žena v Egiptu in na Goriškem. Cilj prispevka je predstaviti aleksandrinstvo kot pomemben košček slovenske zgodovine in hkrati poskusiti odgovoriti na vprašanje, kje je bila domovina aleksandrink. This contribution looks at the exceptional historical phenomenon of Slovene emigration represented by the "Alexandrian women", presenting the main reasons why Slovene women and girls decided to relocate to Alexandria in Egypt and what work they did there. The focus then shifts to the influence of these women on their employers' families and the special qualities that led them to be much sought after in Egypt. The paper also presents the material cultural heritage that has a significant role in preserving and strengthening the memory of the Alexandrian women, as well as facilitating a unique insight into the lives of Slovene women in Egypt and in the Gorizia region. The aim is to present the Alexandrian women as an important fragment of Slovene history and at the same time to try to answer the question as to which country was these women's homeland.

V gradbeništvu in še zlasti v stavbarstvu je les zastopan kot osnovno ali dopolnilno gradivo, pa tudi kot konstrukcijska opora in kot dopolnilo drugim materialom. Kot gradivo se je globoko začrtal v prepoznavnost tradicionalne gradnje tako na Slovenskem kot v večini evropskih in številnih kulturnih območjih po svetu. S svojo pogosto rabo je zaznamoval številne kmetijske, industrijske, trgovinske, obrtniške in tudi turistične ter kulturne dejavnosti po svetu, saj so ga marsikje znali uporabljati na takšen mojstrski način, da tako grajene lesene ali delno lesene stavbe še vedno zbujajo pozornost in začudenje. Les je opazno prisoten tudi v evropski kulturi termalnih zdravilišč, kamor so ga graditelji neizmernih domislic vključevali kot prekrito konstrukcijsko ali kot razgaljeno oziroma povsem samostojno gradivo. Sodeč po nam dostopnih virih so les v zdraviliški arhitekturi najpogosteje uporabljali pri postavljanju različnih paviljonov, nadstreškov, prodajnih in drugih lop ter hišic, pa tudi pri gradnji posebnih zdraviliških stavb, ki jih največkrat prepoznamo pod imenom wandelbahn, wandelhalle ali njima po zasnovi in namembnosti sorodnimi stavbami. Prav te stavbe sodijo med najbolj vidne prepoznavnosti zdravilišč, saj so pomembno gibalo njihovega družabnega, kulturnega, izobraževalnega, tržnega in še kakšnega življenja. In construction, and even more so in architecture, wood has the status of a primary and secondary material, a construction support and supplemen to other materials. As a material, wood has become deeply rooted in traditional construction both in Slovenia and the majority of European and a number of other cultures across the world. The use of wood has had a strong impact on farm, industrial, commercial, craft as well as tourist and cultural activities all across the globe the masters of their craft used wood in such an astonishing way that the wooden or partly wooden buildings they made still draw attention and leave people in awe. Wood is also notably present in the culture of European thermal spas, in which the immensely creative architects used wood as an undercover structural material or as an uncovered independent construction material. According to the sources available to us, wood in thermal spa architecture was most commonly used in different types of pavilions, jutting roofs, house-like market stalls and other sheds and small wooden houses, as well as in the construction of special spa buildings, most commonly known as wandelbahns or wandelhalle, or for any type of building with a similar construction and purpose. These buildings are one of the most prominent spa features, for they present an important element of thermal spas’ social, cultural, educational, commercial and other aspects of life.
