Orientation and friction angles of the main discontinuity sets and orientation of rock faces are required as input to perform the test on a stereonet graphically. However, for natural outcrops, the orientation of rock faces could vary significantly, and the test should be performed assuming all the representative ones. To speed up this process, the authors set up an automatic procedure based on the GIS environment working principles and developed it in Matlab language. Main discontinuity sets orientation and relative friction angles, along with slope and aspect data representing the rockface orientation of the considered outcrop, are the input data. The slope and aspect data are in GeoTIFF format, the most common format for georeferenced raster files employed in a GIS environment. The Matlab code performs Markland’s tests for planar and wedge sliding and flexural toppling, considering all the possible sets or intersections of sets, and provides the output with the same extent and georeferencing of the input data. The outputs are a series of GeoTIFF raster files describing the result for each kinematism separately and globally, which can be imported directly into GIS. The global results can also be used to map source areas for 3D rockfall numerical simulations. The code was validated through a case study by comparing its results with those obtained by performing the conventional tests singularly on a number of significant rock faces. The results obtained in the case study show that the algorithm produces reliable results consistent with those provided by traditional methods.

Current approaches for scour risk assessment are generally based on the evaluation of the equilibrium scour depth for a flood event with a prefixed return period. The temporal evolution of the bridge-pier scour process is usually disregarded, by assuming that equilibrium conditions are always attained, regardless of the flood properties. However, recent studies have highlighted the importance of accounting for the contribution of multiple flood events and their exact hydrograph shape. This study aims at quantifying the epistemic uncertainty related to the modelling of the temporal evolution of scour under multiple consecutive flood events in clear-water conditions. A simple numerical case study is considered, using a Markovian framework to describe probabilistically the progression of scour. Well-known time-dependent scour models are used to estimate the temporal evolution of the scour-depth under each flood hydrograph, and the scour estimates are compared with those obtained using widely employed equilibrium scour formulas. Results show that the expected scour depth is influenced by the parameters used to describe the flood hydrograph and that the probability distribution of the scour depth is highly sensitive to the choice of the time-dependent scour model. The uncertainty in the scour estimation stemming from the formula adopted in this study for describing the temporal evolution of the scour depth can be higher than those related to the formula adopted for equilibrium scour.

The effect of micro-CT image resolution and size on the accuracy of the derived petrophysical properties is addressed in this study using a relatively homogenous sandstone and a heterogenous, highly porous bioclastic limestone. Standard laboratory procedures including NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) analysis, micro-CT analysis at different image resolutions and sizes and pore-scale flow simulations were used to determine and compare petrophysical properties. NMR-derived pore-size distribution (PSD) was comparable to the micro-CT-derived PSD at a resolution of 7 µm for both the rock types. Porosity was higher using the water saturation method as compared to the NMR method in both rocks. The resolution did not show a significant effect on the porosity of the homogeneous sandstone, but porosity in the heterogeneous limestone varies depending on the location of the sub-sample. The transport regime in the sandstone was derived by simulations and changed with the resolution of the micro-CT image. The transport regime in the sandstone was advection-dominated at higher image resolution and diffusion-dominated when using a lower image resolution. In contrast, advection was the dominant transport regime for the limestone based on simulations using higher and lower image resolutions. Simulation-derived permeability for a 400 Voxel3 image at 7 µm resolution in the Berea sandstone matched laboratory results, although local heterogeneity within the rock plays an integral role in the permeability estimation within the sub-sampled images. The simulation-derived permeability was highly variable in the Mount Gambier limestone depending on the image size and resolution with the closest value to a laboratory result simulated with an image resolution of 2.5 µm and a size of 300 Voxel3. Overall, the study demonstrates the need to decide on micro-CT parameters depending on the type of petrophysical property of interest and the degree of heterogeneity within the rock types.

In total, 102 sediments samples were taken along the river, 51 in the live-bed channel and another 51 in the floodplain. The samples analysed have high metal(loid)s content, sometimes much higher than the reference levels established by European and regional legislation for soils, especially Pb, As and Ba, with average values of 5452 mg/kg, 116 mg/kg and 2622 mg/kg, respectively. The statistical analysis of the values obtained allows the distribution of the contents of the different elements along the river to be characterized and the associations and dispersion patterns in the sediments of the metal(loid)s coming from the environmental liabilities of the numerous dumpsites and tailings dams generated by mining activity to be defined. In both cases, the high metal(loid)s content identified as well as the resulting values of various environmental indices (the enrichment factor, contamination factor, geoaccumulation index, potential ecological risk index and pollution load index), confirmed that the sediment samples were moderately to highly contaminated over extensive areas of the basin studied, with the greatest intensity and extent in the floodplain sediments. The conglomerate, the succeeding lacustrine-swamp deposits of the Hestberget and Kullgrøfta members (Ramså Formation) and the overlying terrestrial to marginal marine deposits of the lower Bonteigen Member (Ramså Formation), comprise the Bajocian T-R sequence. Bathonian–Oxfordian strata appear to be missing in the studied boreholes, and the second T-R cycle spans the Kimmeridgian to Berriasian open marine deposits of the upper Bonteigen Member and the Dragneset Formation (Breisanden, Taumhølet and Ratjønna members). The overlying Nybrua Formation comprises a condensed marine succession of Valanginian–Early Barremian calcareous sandstone and marl, followed by brownish-red siltstone. The upper T-R sequence (Skarstein Formation) consists of marine transgressive Barremian dark siltstones, silty shales and mudstones, followed by dark mudstone and shale. Marine palynomorphs recovered in these stacked marine slope turbidite sediments are of Late Barremian age, but possibly the youngest T-R cycle also includes Aptian deposits elsewhere in the basin.

Morris;An empirical model for the densification of dry snow has been calibrated using strain-rate data from Pine Island Glacier basin, Antarctica. The model provides for a smooth transition between Stage 1 and Stage 2 densification, and leads to an analytical expression for density as a function of depth. It introduces two new parameters with a simple physical basis: transition density ρ T and a scaling factor, M, which controls the extent of the transition zone. The standard (Herron and Langway) parameterization is used for strain rates away from the transition zone. Calibration, though tentative, produces best parameter values of ρ T = 580 kg m − 3 and M = 7 for the region. Using these values, the transition model produces better simulations of snow profiles from Pine Island Glacier basin than the well-established Herron and Langway and Ligtenberg models, both of which postulate abrupt transition. Simulation of density profiles from other sites using M = 7 produces the best values of ρ T = 550 kg m − 3 for a high accumulation site and 530 kg m − 3 for a low accumulation site, suggesting that transition density may vary with climatic conditions. The variation of bubble close-off depth and depth-integrated porosity with mean annual accumulation predicted by the transition model is similar to that predicted by the Simonsen model tuned for Greenland.

Various regions of the Hindukush-Karakoram-Himalayas receive intense monsoon rainfall, which, together with snow and glacier melt, produce intense floods. The Kabul river basin originates from the Hindukush Mountains and is frequently hit by such floods. We analyses flood frequency and intensity in Kabul basin for a contemporary period (1981–2015) and two future periods (i.e., 2031–2050 and 2081–2100) using the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios based on four bias-corrected downscaled climate models (INM-CM4, IPSL-CM5A, EC-EARTH, and MIROC5). Future floods are modelled with the SWAT hydrological model. The model results suggest an increasing trend due to an increasing precipitation and higher temperatures (based on all climate models except INM-CM4), which accelerates snow and glacier-melt. All of the scenario results show that the current flow with a 1 in 50 year return period is likely to occur more frequently (i.e., 1 in every 9–10 years and 2–3 years, respectively) during the near and far future periods. Such increases in intensity and frequency are likely to adversely affect downstream population and infrastructures. This, therefore, urges for appropriate early precautionary mitigation measures. This study can assist water managers and policy makers in their preparation to adequately plan for and manage flood protection. Its findings are also relevant for other basins in the Hindukush-Karakoram-Himalayas region.

Nichols;Soil geochemical data from sample sites in counties that reported occurrences of anthrax in wildlife and livestock since 2000 were evaluated against counties within the same states (MN, MT, ND, NV, OR, SD and TX) that did not report occurrences. These data identified the elements, calcium (Ca), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P) and strontium (Sr), as having statistically significant differences in concentrations between county type (anthrax occurrence versus no occurrence). Tentative threshold values of the lowest concentrations of each of these elements (Ca = 0.43 wt %, Mn = 142 mg/kg, P = 180 mg/kg and Sr = 51 mg/kg) and average concentrations (Ca = 1.3 wt %, Mn = 463 mg/kg, P = 580 mg/kg and Sr = 170 mg/kg) were identified from anthrax-positive counties as prospective investigative tools in determining whether an outbreak had “potential” or was “likely” at any given geographic location in the contiguous United States.

Since the relationship between intense rainfall, land cover/land use (LULC), and landslide occurrences is still not fully understood, our objective was to develop a model design that allows to assess landslide susceptibility specifically for past triggering events. We used generalized additive models (GAM) to link land surface, geology, meteorological, and LULC variables to observed slope failures. Accounting for the temporal variation in landslide triggering, we implemented an innovative spatio-temporal approach for landslide absence sampling. We assessed model performance using k-fold cross-validation in space and time to estimate the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). Furthermore, we analyzed the variable importance and its relationship to landslide occurrence. Our results showed that the models had on average acceptable to outstanding landslide discrimination capabilities (0.81–0.94 mAUROC in space and 0.72–0.95 mAUROC in time). Furthermore, meteorological and LULC variables were of great importance in explaining the landslide events (e.g., five-day rainfall 13.6–17.8% mean decrease in deviance explained), confirming their usefulness in landslide event analysis. Based on the present findings, future studies may assess the potential of this approach for developing future storylines of slope instability based on climate and LULC scenarios.

In recent years, a significant increase in extreme events has been registered in the Alps due to climate change. These changes in the threat to settlement areas in the Alpine region have resulted in the need for the construction of sustainable protective structures. Many structures are rigid, but others are now also increasingly flexible, e.g., net and dam structures, which are mainly earth dams with geogrids. In this study, empirical model experiments and numerical simulations were carried out to estimate the flow depth, the deposition forms and the effects on protective structures. Numerical programs usually require unknown input parameters and long computation times for a realistic simulation of the process. This study shows the results of model tests with different granular materials. Furthermore, different design approaches of different authors are presented. Finally, a design model based on the model tests of the University of Innsbruck for rigid barriers, nets and dams due to rock avalanches is presented.

Orientation and friction angles of the main discontinuity sets and orientation of rock faces are required as input to perform the test on a stereonet graphically. However, for natural outcrops, the orientation of rock faces could vary significantly, and the test should be performed assuming all the representative ones. To speed up this process, the authors set up an automatic procedure based on the GIS environment working principles and developed it in Matlab language. Main discontinuity sets orientation and relative friction angles, along with slope and aspect data representing the rockface orientation of the considered outcrop, are the input data. The slope and aspect data are in GeoTIFF format, the most common format for georeferenced raster files employed in a GIS environment. The Matlab code performs Markland’s tests for planar and wedge sliding and flexural toppling, considering all the possible sets or intersections of sets, and provides the output with the same extent and georeferencing of the input data. The outputs are a series of GeoTIFF raster files describing the result for each kinematism separately and globally, which can be imported directly into GIS. The global results can also be used to map source areas for 3D rockfall numerical simulations. The code was validated through a case study by comparing its results with those obtained by performing the conventional tests singularly on a number of significant rock faces. The results obtained in the case study show that the algorithm produces reliable results consistent with those provided by traditional methods.

Current approaches for scour risk assessment are generally based on the evaluation of the equilibrium scour depth for a flood event with a prefixed return period. The temporal evolution of the bridge-pier scour process is usually disregarded, by assuming that equilibrium conditions are always attained, regardless of the flood properties. However, recent studies have highlighted the importance of accounting for the contribution of multiple flood events and their exact hydrograph shape. This study aims at quantifying the epistemic uncertainty related to the modelling of the temporal evolution of scour under multiple consecutive flood events in clear-water conditions. A simple numerical case study is considered, using a Markovian framework to describe probabilistically the progression of scour. Well-known time-dependent scour models are used to estimate the temporal evolution of the scour-depth under each flood hydrograph, and the scour estimates are compared with those obtained using widely employed equilibrium scour formulas. Results show that the expected scour depth is influenced by the parameters used to describe the flood hydrograph and that the probability distribution of the scour depth is highly sensitive to the choice of the time-dependent scour model. The uncertainty in the scour estimation stemming from the formula adopted in this study for describing the temporal evolution of the scour depth can be higher than those related to the formula adopted for equilibrium scour.

The effect of micro-CT image resolution and size on the accuracy of the derived petrophysical properties is addressed in this study using a relatively homogenous sandstone and a heterogenous, highly porous bioclastic limestone. Standard laboratory procedures including NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) analysis, micro-CT analysis at different image resolutions and sizes and pore-scale flow simulations were used to determine and compare petrophysical properties. NMR-derived pore-size distribution (PSD) was comparable to the micro-CT-derived PSD at a resolution of 7 µm for both the rock types. Porosity was higher using the water saturation method as compared to the NMR method in both rocks. The resolution did not show a significant effect on the porosity of the homogeneous sandstone, but porosity in the heterogeneous limestone varies depending on the location of the sub-sample. The transport regime in the sandstone was derived by simulations and changed with the resolution of the micro-CT image. The transport regime in the sandstone was advection-dominated at higher image resolution and diffusion-dominated when using a lower image resolution. In contrast, advection was the dominant transport regime for the limestone based on simulations using higher and lower image resolutions. Simulation-derived permeability for a 400 Voxel3 image at 7 µm resolution in the Berea sandstone matched laboratory results, although local heterogeneity within the rock plays an integral role in the permeability estimation within the sub-sampled images. The simulation-derived permeability was highly variable in the Mount Gambier limestone depending on the image size and resolution with the closest value to a laboratory result simulated with an image resolution of 2.5 µm and a size of 300 Voxel3. Overall, the study demonstrates the need to decide on micro-CT parameters depending on the type of petrophysical property of interest and the degree of heterogeneity within the rock types.

In total, 102 sediments samples were taken along the river, 51 in the live-bed channel and another 51 in the floodplain. The samples analysed have high metal(loid)s content, sometimes much higher than the reference levels established by European and regional legislation for soils, especially Pb, As and Ba, with average values of 5452 mg/kg, 116 mg/kg and 2622 mg/kg, respectively. The statistical analysis of the values obtained allows the distribution of the contents of the different elements along the river to be characterized and the associations and dispersion patterns in the sediments of the metal(loid)s coming from the environmental liabilities of the numerous dumpsites and tailings dams generated by mining activity to be defined. In both cases, the high metal(loid)s content identified as well as the resulting values of various environmental indices (the enrichment factor, contamination factor, geoaccumulation index, potential ecological risk index and pollution load index), confirmed that the sediment samples were moderately to highly contaminated over extensive areas of the basin studied, with the greatest intensity and extent in the floodplain sediments. The conglomerate, the succeeding lacustrine-swamp deposits of the Hestberget and Kullgrøfta members (Ramså Formation) and the overlying terrestrial to marginal marine deposits of the lower Bonteigen Member (Ramså Formation), comprise the Bajocian T-R sequence. Bathonian–Oxfordian strata appear to be missing in the studied boreholes, and the second T-R cycle spans the Kimmeridgian to Berriasian open marine deposits of the upper Bonteigen Member and the Dragneset Formation (Breisanden, Taumhølet and Ratjønna members). The overlying Nybrua Formation comprises a condensed marine succession of Valanginian–Early Barremian calcareous sandstone and marl, followed by brownish-red siltstone. The upper T-R sequence (Skarstein Formation) consists of marine transgressive Barremian dark siltstones, silty shales and mudstones, followed by dark mudstone and shale. Marine palynomorphs recovered in these stacked marine slope turbidite sediments are of Late Barremian age, but possibly the youngest T-R cycle also includes Aptian deposits elsewhere in the basin.

Morris;An empirical model for the densification of dry snow has been calibrated using strain-rate data from Pine Island Glacier basin, Antarctica. The model provides for a smooth transition between Stage 1 and Stage 2 densification, and leads to an analytical expression for density as a function of depth. It introduces two new parameters with a simple physical basis: transition density ρ T and a scaling factor, M, which controls the extent of the transition zone. The standard (Herron and Langway) parameterization is used for strain rates away from the transition zone. Calibration, though tentative, produces best parameter values of ρ T = 580 kg m − 3 and M = 7 for the region. Using these values, the transition model produces better simulations of snow profiles from Pine Island Glacier basin than the well-established Herron and Langway and Ligtenberg models, both of which postulate abrupt transition. Simulation of density profiles from other sites using M = 7 produces the best values of ρ T = 550 kg m − 3 for a high accumulation site and 530 kg m − 3 for a low accumulation site, suggesting that transition density may vary with climatic conditions. The variation of bubble close-off depth and depth-integrated porosity with mean annual accumulation predicted by the transition model is similar to that predicted by the Simonsen model tuned for Greenland.

Various regions of the Hindukush-Karakoram-Himalayas receive intense monsoon rainfall, which, together with snow and glacier melt, produce intense floods. The Kabul river basin originates from the Hindukush Mountains and is frequently hit by such floods. We analyses flood frequency and intensity in Kabul basin for a contemporary period (1981–2015) and two future periods (i.e., 2031–2050 and 2081–2100) using the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios based on four bias-corrected downscaled climate models (INM-CM4, IPSL-CM5A, EC-EARTH, and MIROC5). Future floods are modelled with the SWAT hydrological model. The model results suggest an increasing trend due to an increasing precipitation and higher temperatures (based on all climate models except INM-CM4), which accelerates snow and glacier-melt. All of the scenario results show that the current flow with a 1 in 50 year return period is likely to occur more frequently (i.e., 1 in every 9–10 years and 2–3 years, respectively) during the near and far future periods. Such increases in intensity and frequency are likely to adversely affect downstream population and infrastructures. This, therefore, urges for appropriate early precautionary mitigation measures. This study can assist water managers and policy makers in their preparation to adequately plan for and manage flood protection. Its findings are also relevant for other basins in the Hindukush-Karakoram-Himalayas region.

Tentative threshold values of the lowest concentrations of each of these elements (Ca = 0.43 wt %, Mn = 142 mg/kg, P = 180 mg/kg and Sr = 51 mg/kg) and average concentrations (Ca = 1.3 wt %, Mn = 463 mg/kg, P = 580 mg/kg and Sr = 170 mg/kg) were identified from anthrax-positive counties as prospective investigative tools in determining whether an outbreak had “potential” or was “likely” at any given geographic location in the contiguous United States.

Since the relationship between intense rainfall, land cover/land use (LULC), and landslide occurrences is still not fully understood, our objective was to develop a model design that allows to assess landslide susceptibility specifically for past triggering events. We used generalized additive models (GAM) to link land surface, geology, meteorological, and LULC variables to observed slope failures. Accounting for the temporal variation in landslide triggering, we implemented an innovative spatio-temporal approach for landslide absence sampling. We assessed model performance using k-fold cross-validation in space and time to estimate the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). Furthermore, we analyzed the variable importance and its relationship to landslide occurrence. Our results showed that the models had on average acceptable to outstanding landslide discrimination capabilities (0.81–0.94 mAUROC in space and 0.72–0.95 mAUROC in time). Furthermore, meteorological and LULC variables were of great importance in explaining the landslide events (e.g., five-day rainfall 13.6–17.8% mean decrease in deviance explained), confirming their usefulness in landslide event analysis. Based on the present findings, future studies may assess the potential of this approach for developing future storylines of slope instability based on climate and LULC scenarios.
