Fashion and clothing have always been a cultural vessel of self-expression, but how has it also been used as a tool of societal control and an expression of a perceived mass ideal? Throughout history, women have been treated as second class citizens and often as political chess pieces within the grander scheme of the western narrative of society. Often, this dominance over women was exerted covertly through spaces they were allowed to occupy, namely dress, fashion, and especially within media. The discourse of feminism, fashion, and media’s influence surrounding them, will be explored through the analysis of the Edwardian fashion trend, the hobble skirt. 

System log files are filled with logged events, status codes, and other messages. By analyzing the log files, the systems current state can be determined, and find out if something during its execution went wrong. Log file analysis has been studied for some time now, where recent studies have shown state-of-the-art performance using machine learning techniques. In this thesis, document classification solutions were tested on log files in order to classify regular system runs versus abnormal system runs. To solve this task, supervised and unsupervised learning methods were combined. Doc2Vec was used to extract document features, and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) based architectures on the classification task. With the use of the machine learning models and preprocessing techniques the tested models yielded an f1-score and accuracy above 95% when classifying log files.

The history of California is in many ways a story about water, and the outsized effect that droughts, floods, and seasonal precipitation rates have had on the political and economic development of the state over the past 170 years. This thesis uses discourse analysis of historical and ongoing negotiations that have been presented in federal and state reports, narratives, case laws and legislation to explore how the discourse around water politics has been shaped in the state. From this, an antiessentialist environmental history develops around the relationship between overdrafted groundwater basins in the Central Valley and the agriculture industry located there. Finally, this thesis explores what the future of a waterscape built during the capitalization of modern society may look like as we move towards a new regime of nature.

Biliary cystadenocarcinomas are very rare malignant epithelial tumours of the liver. The preoperative diagnosis of this cystic tumor is difficult because its clinical and radiological presentation is non-specific. Complete surgical removal is the recommended treatment for hepatic cystadenocarcinoma. Incomplete resection is a source of tumor recurrence and metastatic dissemination, which is the case when it is wrongly diagnosed as another benign cystic lesion of the liver. We report a new case of biliary cystadenocarcinoma that has been diagnosed as a hepatic hydatic cyst, resulting in inadequate management.

Abstract---This paper attempts to investigate the use of humour inrevealing the idea of corruption in Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist.Corruption was a huge problem in London in the 1830s when Dickenswas writing. Oliver Twist was one of his best novels that portrayedhow corruption lived. Through this novel, he also wanted to show howsocial and cultural at that time created corrupt behavior in thesociety. The art of humour created by Dickens is an interestingstrategy to deliver the message of corruption. By understanding theart of humour that consists of idiomatic expression, social andcultural context, would help the translator to capture a distinctivecreative process that incorporates the linguistic structures andcultural environment of the target language while at the same timeremaining as faithful as possible to the original.Keywords---corruption, distinctive creative process, humour,linguistic structures, novels.

In her article, “Hanay Geiogamah’s Body Indian and Foghorn as ‘Plays with a Purpose,’” written against the backdrop of critical whiteness studies, Danica Čerče discusses how Geiogamah’s theatrical rhetoric intervenes in the assumptions about whiteness as a static, privilege-granting category and system of dominance. By focusing on various techniques and strategies mobilized to define and affirm Native Americans’ authentic rather than imposed identities, the article shows that humor is one of the prime textual devices in Geiogamah’s plays to renegotiate what Walter Mignolo calls “the racist structure of power.”

Camas (Camassia quamash) is well documented as a traditional native food source throughout the Northwestern United States and Canada. A better understanding of the historic distribution of camas in Idaho would help to distinguish root foraging in this region from the Pacific Northwest. Modern grazing, development, climate change, and other factors have decimated native camas in this region. This study uses a species distribution model (MaxEnt) to provide a well-informed geospatial projection of the historic distribution and habitat characteristics of camas in Southern Idaho. Understanding the most significant landscape and climate characteristics for camas allows us to estimate suitable habitats, and therefore the potential influence of camas on human diet breadth and mobility in the Late Archaic.

In this article, I examine how Sissieretta Jones (frequently described as America’s first Black superstar, among other superlatives) strategically leveraged her European performance reviews in order to increase her listenership and wages in the United States. Jones toured Europe for the first (and only) time from February until November in 1895. According to clippings that she provided to African American newspapers, the singer performed at the renowned Winter Garden in Berlin for three months. Sissieretta Jones also claimed that she performed for Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, at his palace and was subsequently presented with an elaborate diamond brooch for her performance. Afterward, the singer told the African American newspaper the Indianapolis Freeman that she would like to live in Europe permanently. Her biographers frequently cite the success of this trip and its symbolic importance for African Americans. And yet, evidence of these events in the archives of major German newspapers is elusive and contradictory at best, if it exists at all. Nevertheless, after the much-hyped tour, her career would take many twists and turns. Sissieretta Jones eventually performed in venues like Carnegie Hall and Madison Square Garden. She was the highest-paid Black female performer of the nineteenth century and a role model for future generations of Black performers.

The presence of sand injections has proven to enhance the likelihood of hydrocarbon traps within siliciclastic successions. Through the development of large interconnected networks of sills and dykes, sand injection complexes provide a volume of porous and permeable rocks within the low permeability host units. Overall, the formation of sand injection complexes requires extensive fracturing and hydrofracturing, which can be particularly pronounced when sand injections are coupled with brittle tectonic deformation. In exceptional circumstances, this process may threaten the integrity of the reservoir top seal thereby preventing further hydrocarbon accumulation. Studying exceptional exposures along the coastal area of Santa Cruz in California, we report evidence for top seal failure associated with injection episodes. Two distinct sand injection episodes are proposed. A first event, datable to Late Miocene, allowed for large volumes of sand to be emplaced within the top-seal units followed by accumulation of hydrocarbons within newly injected sandstones. Later, a series of brittle tectonic events, associated with San Andreas/San Gregorio Fault System, caused remobilisation and accumulation of sand along newly formed fault planes. This combination of pervasive brittle deformation and sandstone injection along fault structures, as this detailed case study documents, can disrupt the integrity of a host unit, leading to the overall failure of a top seal and leakage of hydrocarbons.
