In the DUMBO historic district between the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge – part of Brooklyn’s new waterfront – an old, beautifully restored carousel has been placed on an elevated concrete foundation in a transparent pavilion. Directly above the carousel is a circular window in the pavilion’s ceiling, which otherwise consists of polished aluminum strips. The roof is supported in each corner by four large, cylindrical steel columns, which are drawn 6 ½ feet back from the façade. The façades facing east and west consist of seven fixed panels of self-supporting acrylic sheets. The façades facing north and south can be folded out and opened completely.Jean Nouvel calls his small building a ‘jewel box’ and a ‘delicate small monument’ in a city that is otherwise full of large, monumental buildings. The pavilion is of significant branding value for the DUMBO area’s transformation from harbor industry to a creative cultural growth area. Today, Jane’s Carousel functions as a popular meeting place, a magnet that attracts people from Manhattan across to Brooklyn, thereby creating a connection between the two boroughs across the East River. The area around the carousel has become a new dynamic activity space, a public domain where different groups relax and observe each other’s celebrations, lunches, and leisure activities.“The role of the carousel along the waterfront cannot be underestimated. It is an example of how a successful collaboration between a private developer and a famous architect can happen. It’s a way where NYC (New York City Council) can utilize private funding to create public space.By creating a carousel building that is open and accessible almost all year round, they have succeeded in drawing people to the area. The carousel has become a central cornerstone of the park; it’s a massive attraction, which brings people to the waterfront. People who would normally not come here: families, kids and so on. It expanded the program and the use of the park in itself. Where you often see parks where people ‘run up and down’ or have a little picnic – you also here have a destination point. It has become more of a scene than a simple park area” (Holm, HAO, interview May 5th 2014).

The promotion of green purchase is one of the ways to minimize the environmental impact form increasing consumption. Eurobarometer's conducted survey (year 2012) showed big differences in green purchase behavior in European Union which did not depend on economic development and location. Austria was the only EU country where the relative majority of citizens (48%) often buy the environmentally friendly products, meanwhile the least respondents answer that they often buy these products in Lithuania (only 15%). Applying the approach of Structural Equation Modeling with latent variables, in the context of environmentally friendly behavior we searched for the main external determinants of green purchase behavior in both these both countries. We revealed the factors which are associated with country level. We chose these countries because they had very different level of GDP. The results showed that environmental friendly social norms, importance of products prices, sex and country aspect had significant impact on green purchase behavior, meanwhile the environmentally friendly behavior is not directly related to purchase behavior. Moreover despite that the country as a factor was not associated with environmentally friendly social norms, the differences of green purchase, emvironmentally friendly behavior and importance of product price between countries were considerable. These findings have important implication for sales management and state policy to consider the countries specificities in seeking the promotion of green purchase in the EU.

Surgical site infections (SSI) are significant postoperative complications and a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) worldwide. They are associated with excess morbidity and mortality, and lead to decreased quality of life, prolonged hospital length of stay, and increased costs. Surveillance of HAI, including SSI, is a cornerstone of effective infection prevention and control (IPC) programmes. Surveillance activities can guide the implementation, and assess the effectiveness of preventive programmes aimed at reducing SSI incidence. In this Privat-Docent thesis we include four publications that contribute a unique perspective to SSI surveillance. The first publication addresses the intrinsic effect of surveillance. We performed a large international cohort study of SSI surveillance networks in 15 countries, and were able to determine that a hospital’s duration of participation in a surveillance network was associated with a decrease in its SSI incidence. This study confirms the existence of the “surveillance effect”, implying that awareness and monitoring can drive improvements in clinical practice and outcomes. The second publication examines the temporal trends and epidemiology of SSI due to Staphylococcus aureus in Switzerland, using data from the Swiss SSI surveillance network (Swissnoso), and showed that there were decreasing trends in incidence. We also examined risk factors associated with both methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant S. aureus, helping to inform targeted prevention approaches, and to identify high-risk populations for further studies. The third publication used data from SSI surveillance networks in England, France, and Switzerland to externally validate risk predictions scores for SSI in colorectal surgery, where the burden is the highest, and to develop a novel score. The study highlighted the limitations of current models and underscores the need for more accurate prediction tools, which rely on data that is beyond what is routinely collected for the purposes of surveillance. The fourth publication charts a strategic roadmap, developed by a multidisciplinary group of European experts in surveillance, for the transition to automated HAI surveillance across Europe, including SSI. It emphasises benefits for surveillance practices that are brought about by digitalisation and automation in terms of efficiency and standardization, but also discusses common challenges and key questions such as surveillance targets. It is intended to accompany individuals or institutions that wish to implement an automated HAI surveillance programme.

Female Canadian citizen born in a relatively rural small northern town in Canada. She has travelled extensively during her adult life around the world. She has lived in Pau on two different occasions, and each time travelled to follow her husband her works in the petrol industry. She believes that she had a very different life to that of her children, mainly due to the travelling that they have experienced from an early age. However, she speaks of the downside of that and the notion of belonging. She also speaks of learning a foreign language and how this affects personality traits, due to inability to express herself correctly in French. She notes that there have been hard times in her life due to moving around, and not having friends to count on, or family around her. In order to deal with this, she set up a thriving business that provides assistance and opportunities to women who are in the same position as her. She also speaks about mental health issues and how she overcame these through therapy.
