    We present a new method for finding principal null directions (PNDs). Because our method assumes as input the intrinsic metric and extrinsic curvature of a spacelike hypersurface, it should be particularly useful to numerical relativists. We illustrate our method by finding the PNDs of the Kastor-Traschen spacetimes, which contain arbitrarily many $Q=M$ black holes in a de Sitter back-ground.

      Background: Radon is odourless and colourless gas. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer and can only be found through testing. A radon potential map released in 2012 and highlighted various areas of British Columbia which were high in radon. This study focused on testing for radon gas in houses within the Sea to Sky Corridor and North Shore, areas noted to be high in radon. Methods: This study was conducted by reaching out to participants who lived within these areas. Radon test kits were distributed, and patrons were instructed to keep these kits on the lowest level of the home for at least 91 days. After the 91-day period, the radon test kits were collected and sent to a lab for further results. Results: The lab results were analysed with NCSS Data Analysis software. Three statistical tests were conducted looking at the different areas, types of foundation and if the houses tested are below the recommended average. Two of the two sample T tests were not significant, and the one sample T test came back significant. Conclusion: The two-sample t test (comparison against the two areas) showed that radon did not have equal concentrations. The same can be said with the two sample t tests against foundation types (slab on grade and crawl space). All samples were then compared against the recommend limit set by Health Canada (200 Bq/3), and was concluded that they were all below this limit.

    Em virtude dos números altos de gestação de alto risco, das várias condições que causam essa situação e da necessidade de adotar cuidados médicos bem no início da detecção da condição, este estudo se justifica cientificamente e socialmente pois permite ampliar o conhecimento acerca das potencialidades da gestação de alto risco. Diante do exposto, o presente trabalho tem o objetivo de explanar sobre as condições de predisposição, bem como as consequências decorrentes de complicações não acompanhadas e tratadas. Trata-se de uma revisão narrativa de literatura, de abordagem qualitativa. Para sua execução, foram selecionados artigos publicados no recorte temporal de 2015 a 2023, publicados nas bases de dados do Google Acadêmico, utilizando os descritores em saúde: alto risco; complicações gestacionais; gestação. A análise dos dados foi construída utilizando das leituras de: Reconhecimento, Exploratória, Leitura Reflexiva ou crítica e Interpretativa. Os fatores de risco podem estar associados à idade, aos indicadores biofísicos relacionados à genética e cuidados com a saúde; indicadores psicossociais relacionados aos comportamentos da gestante; os sociodemográficos abordam temáticas sobre a falta de atendimento pré-natal, baixa renda, estado civil, raça e etnia, e os ambientais dizem respeito aos perigos encontrados no ambiente de vida e de trabalho. Conclui-se que na gestação de alto risco os principais fatores de risco estão associados à idade, fatores biopsicossociais e ambientais. Entre as complicações estão presentes a morbimortalidade perinatal, a prematuridade e as malformações fetais. É importante que as gestações sejam acompanhadas de maneira intensa visando identificar um potencial risco o mais precoce possível.

    Exposing a cell to a solution containing NH3/NH4+ leads to a rapid NH3 influx, which causes a rise in intracellular pH (pHi) and a transient decrease in surface pH (pHS). Conversely, exposing a cell to a solution containing CO2/HCO3− leads to a rapid CO2 influx, which causes a fall in pHi and a transient increase in pHS.In our laboratory we use the maximal change in the height of the pHS transient (ΔpHS) as a semiquantitative index of membrane permeability to NH3 (PM,NH3) or to CO2 (PM,CO2). As a first step in extracting absolute membrane permeability from pHS measurements, in 2012 we developed a reaction‐diffusion mathematical model of CO2 influx to investigate the dependence of ΔpHS predicted by the model on PM,CO2 values (Somersalo et al, J Theor Biol, 2012). To account for physiological data on gas channels, the model predicts that,contrary to widespread assumptions, the membrane must offer considerable resistance to the movement of CO2.Here, we investigate the dependence of ΔpHS versus PM,NH3 with a reaction‐diffusion mathematical model of NH3 influx into a spherical cell. The model is an extension of the model of Somersalo et al, in which now we include the NH3/NH4+ buffer equilibrium and passive transmembrane flux of NH3. After having checked that the model correctly predicts the transient changes in pHi and pHS that one would expect as NH3 enters a cell, we performed simulations in which we systematically decreased PM,NH3 from that corresponding to a thin film of water. By comparing the dependence of ΔpHS versus a range of PM,NH3 (present study) with the dependence of ΔpHS versus PM,CO2 (Somersalo et al), we conclude that, contrary to the Overton's prediction (which considers only solubility in the membrane), the background PM,NH3 (in absence of gas channels) is far higher than the background PM,CO2.

    A 19-year-old girl presented with symmetrical, extensive xanthomatous changes in the corners of the eyelids, fingers, and elbows from the age of seven. The eyelid xanthomatosis was operated on, but soon relapsed. A few months ago he had an operation on the right elbow. Otherwise, according to her father, the girl was perfectly healthy.

    Background: Lung cancer has the highest mortality rate in the world. Lung cancer management requires biomarkers to evaluate the chemotherapy response. Levels of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) in malignancy >14 ng/ml shows poor prognosis. Increased levels of PAI-1 are associated with stage, metastasis, and prognosis of lung cancer. The chemotherapy is thought to decrease PAI-1 levels. The aim this study is analyze the profile of PAI-1 levels before and after 3rd and 6th chemotherapy cycle and their changes by type of lung cancer and Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST). Methods: This research was conducted from December 2016 to December 2017 at RSSA Malang. The study design was a cohort of 18 lung cancer patients. PAI-1 levels were measured by ELISA in 18 lung cancer stage III or IV patients before (PAI-1(1)) and after 3rd chemotherapy cycle (PAI-1(2)), and 9 patients after 6th chemotherapy cycle (PAI-1(3)). Average PAI-1 levels are presented in tables and graphs. Result: PAI-1(1) 2,151±0,564 ng/ml, PAI-1(2) 1,951±0,534 ng/ml, and PAI-1(3) 1,647±0,495 ng/ml. PAI-1 levels in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) were 1.658±0.562 ng/ml and small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) were 1.609±0.244 ng/ml. Levels of PAI-1(2) in partial response 1.784 ± 0.363 ng/ml, stable disease 1.980 ± 0.304 ng/ml, and progressive disease 2.020±0.635 ng/ml. Levels of PAI-1(3) in the partial response 1.427 ± 0.324 ng/ml and in progressive disease 2.085±0.532 ng/ml. Conclusions: PAI-1 levels in patients with stage III and IV lung cancer after chemotherapy were lower than before chemotherapy, and showed changes corresponding to the response according to RECIST. PAI-1 levels in NSCLC are higher than SCLC. (J Respir Indo 2018; 38(1): 48-56)

    The electrode thickness is a critical design parameter determining the overall flow cell performance through the available surface area for reactions, current and potential distributions, and required pumping power. To date, current redox flow cell assemblies employ repurposed off-the-shelf fibrous electrodes, yet a broad range of thicknesses have been reported, showing that the influence of the electrode thickness on the reactor performance is not well understood. Here, we investigate the effect of the electrode thickness in the range of 200 - 1100 µm on the cell performance by stacking electrode layers in four different flow cell configurations – paper and cloth electrodes combined with flow-through and interdigitated flow fields. We employ a suite of electrochemical and fluid dynamic diagnostics together with pore network modeling simulations to correlate the electrode thickness with the pressure drop and electrochemical performance. We find that for each electrode-flow field combination, there is a unique dependency to electrode thickness. Thicker electrodes are beneficial in combination with flow-through flow fields, whereas when using interdigitated flow fields, thinner electrodes are better suited for the electrochemical performance and pressure losses trade-off. We hope our findings will aid researchers and technology practicioners design their electrochemical flow cells under convective operation.

    We present a new method for finding principal null directions (PNDs). Because our method assumes as input the intrinsic metric and extrinsic curvature of a spacelike hypersurface, it should be particularly useful to numerical relativists. We illustrate our method by finding the PNDs of the Kastor-Traschen spacetimes, which contain arbitrarily many $Q=M$ black holes in a de Sitter back-ground.

      Background: Radon is odourless and colourless gas. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer and can only be found through testing. A radon potential map released in 2012 and highlighted various areas of British Columbia which were high in radon. This study focused on testing for radon gas in houses within the Sea to Sky Corridor and North Shore, areas noted to be high in radon. Methods: This study was conducted by reaching out to participants who lived within these areas. Radon test kits were distributed, and patrons were instructed to keep these kits on the lowest level of the home for at least 91 days. After the 91-day period, the radon test kits were collected and sent to a lab for further results. Results: The lab results were analysed with NCSS Data Analysis software. Three statistical tests were conducted looking at the different areas, types of foundation and if the houses tested are below the recommended average. Two of the two sample T tests were not significant, and the one sample T test came back significant. Conclusion: The two-sample t test (comparison against the two areas) showed that radon did not have equal concentrations. The same can be said with the two sample t tests against foundation types (slab on grade and crawl space). All samples were then compared against the recommend limit set by Health Canada (200 Bq/3), and was concluded that they were all below this limit.

    Em virtude dos números altos de gestação de alto risco, das várias condições que causam essa situação e da necessidade de adotar cuidados médicos bem no início da detecção da condição, este estudo se justifica cientificamente e socialmente pois permite ampliar o conhecimento acerca das potencialidades da gestação de alto risco. Diante do exposto, o presente trabalho tem o objetivo de explanar sobre as condições de predisposição, bem como as consequências decorrentes de complicações não acompanhadas e tratadas. Trata-se de uma revisão narrativa de literatura, de abordagem qualitativa. Para sua execução, foram selecionados artigos publicados no recorte temporal de 2015 a 2023, publicados nas bases de dados do Google Acadêmico, utilizando os descritores em saúde: alto risco; complicações gestacionais; gestação. A análise dos dados foi construída utilizando das leituras de: Reconhecimento, Exploratória, Leitura Reflexiva ou crítica e Interpretativa. Os fatores de risco podem estar associados à idade, aos indicadores biofísicos relacionados à genética e cuidados com a saúde; indicadores psicossociais relacionados aos comportamentos da gestante; os sociodemográficos abordam temáticas sobre a falta de atendimento pré-natal, baixa renda, estado civil, raça e etnia, e os ambientais dizem respeito aos perigos encontrados no ambiente de vida e de trabalho. Conclui-se que na gestação de alto risco os principais fatores de risco estão associados à idade, fatores biopsicossociais e ambientais. Entre as complicações estão presentes a morbimortalidade perinatal, a prematuridade e as malformações fetais. É importante que as gestações sejam acompanhadas de maneira intensa visando identificar um potencial risco o mais precoce possível.
