Marx’s Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts are usually interpreted as a transitional work between different elements of Feuerbach’s and Hegel’s philosophy which are still strongly present in the work of young Marx, and between Marx’s mature historical materialism. In the present text, we will try to show (with reference to the recent discussions on “young Marx”, especially in the French context), that the Manuscripts, in fact, contain an ontology that cannot be reduce either to a mere residuum of classical German philosophy, or to a materialist conception of social life. We shall try to describe this original ontology as an ontology of the sensible, or as an ontology of the finitude of human sensibility.”

Drawing its methodological inspiration from A History of New Modernism. Czech Literature, 1905–1923 (2010), this study aims to present the development of Czech literature over the course of a single year: 1929. The objective, however, is not to portray the literary events and literary production of this year in the manner of a chronicle, nor in their entirety, but to capture certain ‘nodal’ characteristics of the imagination and literary language. There is one event that allows the author to take this approach — i.e. to identify themes, images and figures that are typical of the artistic discourse of the period —, namely the publication of Richard Weiner’s The Barber-Surgeon. The themes, motives, and figures found in this text (dream and dream writing, language, failure, literary polemics) constitute a point of departure for grasping the dominant features of a literary period which is otherwise rather amorphous. By virtue of Weiner’s poetics, a thread of sense begins to emerge, and eventually the ‘story’ or ‘drama’ of 1929, out of the re-constructed configurations and correlations of several different literary texts. Through its ‘otherness’, Weiner’s ‘dream poetics’ separated itself from the universalizing aesthetic concept of its time, thus falling ‘out of the picture’ from the perspective of literary history. By contrast, the author considers it as the central feature of a network of relations among a number of texts published in 1929: the short story AM from Jakub Deml’s collection My Purgatory; the poem The New Icarus by Konstantin Biebl; Karel Čapek’s Tales from Two Pockets; Jaroslav Durych’s essay on Poetics; and Vladislav Vančura’s novel The Last Judgement. The themes and figures under consideration here — poetics, dreams, dream writing and literary polemics — are all related to the writer’s self-consciousness in the creative process and the attention paid by the writer to material elements of the work. This manifests itself as an interest in the question of poetics and in a vivid ‘linguistic awareness’, which is also manifested in the widespread interest in questions of language and the culture of language that Czech linguists, especially those associated with the Prague Linguistic Circle, studied in accordance with — and in dialogue with — contemporary trends in modern art.

The paper focuses on two examples introducing a distant reading approach for research Ukrainian literary works. The studies considered are rather different in terms of breadth of their aims and intentions, the number of performers, the pace and nature of implementation, and consequently, results. The first one concerns famous Ukrainian writer, Taras Shevchenko, and the network of contacts, as reflected in his diary. Distant reading helps to both question and elaborate on established theses and hypotheses of predecessors, as well as to reveal important details of Shevchenko’s portrait as an author, artist, and person. By contrast, the article also informs about the research by a team of scholars who analyzed the titles of European novels of the 1840s–1910s. As the one responsible for the Ukrainian and Polish parts, I outline (un)confirmed expectations and surprising findings, and demonstrate how one can build a bridge between the results of distant reading and subsequent studies of a narrower scope.

The article introduces a new area of the transdisciplinary scientific study of religion which combines methods from the humanities and sciences with a special focus on the study of complex adaptive systems. It discusses the area's theoretical aims and conditions while offering a short review of selected case studies which demonstrate the merit of the approach. The paper joins present epistemological discussions about combining the expertise of the sciences and humanities and takes a pragmatic stance between the normative exhortation for the scientific study of religions and the discussion of innovative methodological horizons emerging from digital humanities. The central position is dedicated to the practice of "formalizing modeling" and its possible research utility in the historically grounded study of religions. On the one hand, the article notices the limited contribution of the cognitive science of religion project to a historiographical study of religions. On the other hand, the article discusses the limits of conventional historiography arising from an orientation to the histories of events and persons rather than to histories of so-called "long duration". Generally, the paper argues for the complementing of the "close reading" of historical sources with "distant reading" and hypothesis-driven research utilizing a variety of formal modeling approaches (GIS, agent-based modeling, complex networks) and computer-based methods. The discussed methods offer new ways of representing data and are understood not only as innovative means of solving historical problems but also as a platform for asking new questions based on the fusion of scientific and humanistic imaginations.

This study focuses on the impact of the war conditions on the attitudes and standing of lawyers, in particular on the Czech lawyers in Moravia. The freedom of advocacy achieved in 1868 was limited by the war conditions and a significant part of the lawyers who were actively working before 1914, were put under surveillance. Some of them were persecuted, some conscripted and they were forced to fight on the side of the monarchy or they fought in the czechoslovakian legions. Part of the lawyers partake in the defense of the people accused of the offense against the state at the end of the war and also in the smooth assumption of power by the new authorities of the Czechoslovakian state.

Práce se zaměřuje na historické knihovny v regionu Západních Čech. Pro svoji práci jsem si vybrala knihovny na zámku Kozel, Manětín, Kynžvart a klášterech Kladruby u Stříbra a Plasy. Zaměřila jsem se na interiér knihoven. Jejich architektonické a umělecké řešení. Studovat tyto aspekty není možné bez širšího kulturně-historického rámce, kterému se v práci také vyjadřuji. ; Obhájeno ; The work is focused on selected historical libraries in region of Western Bohemia. For my work I chose to write about historical libraries at Kozel castle, Manětín castle, Kynžvart castle and in Plasy monetary and Kladruby u Stribra monatery. I focused on their architectural and artistic solutions. Historical librarycan not be examined without the connections to other culturally historical aspects

The study deals with the perception of the book of the prophet Daniel in the Russian environment. It focuses primarily with the interpretation of the story of three young men in the fiery furnace.

This paper attempts to answer the question concerning the degree to which the position of serfs changed after the abolition of serfdom in Austria. Were the people in fact free as has been stated time and again in the history books and textbooks? Research into two Liechtenstein estates – the South Moravian domain of Břeclav/Lundenburg and the Lower Austrian estate of Wilfersdorf was used to analyse the factors behind personal freedom of movement after the abolition of serfdom. Could former serfs travel freely to other estates or abroad? This narrow study showed that this was not the case until the end of the pre-March period, i.e. after the end of patrimonial administration. These findings go against traditional interpretations. The abolition of serfdom was undoubtedly a step towards a modern society, but its implementation did not result in the end of control mechanisms, as they were replaced by others, and not only in the developing legal system. A lesser-known new factor from the period was the restriction of demesnial jurisdiction, which was placed under the control of the regional authorities. However, the period of reform did usher in a new phenomenon: the legal right of former serfs to protection against seignorial powers.

The paper reflects on a freely accessible program to annote, analyze and visualize literary texts called CATMA, which is developed by the narratological team led by Jan Christoph Meister in Hamburg, which follows the tradition of the German research into the area of digital or quantitative narratology. The design of the annotation program develops the conceptual apparatus of classical narratology and these (e.g. Genettian types of anisochrony) are implemented in digitally supported analysis and interpretation of semantics in the genre of short story. Furthermore, annotation and visualization do not replace quantitative analysis, what they do is prepare for a literary scientist a kind of a cognitive map which may help them notice potentially interesting (ir)regularities of texture of the work (grammatical, morphological, semantic features). The CATMA tool thus opens possibilities not only for quantitative study of authors´corpora but also for analysis of motifs which are in the sense of narrative semantics of fictitious worlds as formulated by Lubomír Doležel intentionally expressed by means of distribution of linguistic signs.

The paper deals with chosen DH methods in literary studies, which are focused on modelling of fictional topography and narrative segments quantification. The first part of article presents the methodology concentrated on building of spacial models and their explanation. In the second part are presented the quantitative models of literary-segments such different narrative speeches, character speech, description or so called text in text (letter, diary and so on). Our goal is to present not only the results of this modeling processes, but the way to them. For this purpose the paper presents detailed methodology and procedure associated for example with python coding. In the last part it offers the interpretation strategy growed from comparation between two types of models - spatial and quantitative models. Presented work is only the part of emerging project heading towards on corpus of Czech novels of 19th century.
