    Fieldwork was conducted in selected migration arrival ports in Greece, Italy, Spain, France, South Africa, and Canada to explore the role of the notion of vulnerability in the field level governance of international protection. Specifically, we explored how key actors and stakeholders in the selected field sites 1) understood and applied notions of vulnerability, and 2) collaborated to address and reduce vulnerabilities.

    The measurement of the cross section for the production of a Z boson, decaying to dielectrons or dimuons, in association with at least one bottom quark jet are performed with proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC during 2016-2018. The integrated cross sections for Z + $\ge$1 b jet and Z + $\ge$2 b jets are reported for the electron, muon, and combined channels. The fiducial cross sections in the combined channel are 6.52 $\pm$ 0.04 (stat) $\pm$ 0.40 (syst) $\pm$ 0.14 (theo) pb for Z + $\ge$1 b jet and 0.65 $\pm$ 0.03 (stat) $\pm$ 0.07 (syst) $\pm$ 0.02 (theo) pb for Z + $\ge$2 b jets. The differential cross section distributions are measured as functions of various kinematic observables that are useful for precision tests of perturbative quantum chromodynamics predictions. The ratios of integrated and differential cross sections for Z + $\ge$2 b jets and Z + $\ge$1 b jet processes are also determined. The value of the integrated cross section ratio measured in the combined channel is 0.100 $\pm$ 0.005 (stat) $\pm$ 0.007 (syst) $\pm$ 0.003 (theo).     We study the generic dimension of the solution set over C^*, R^* and R_{>0} of parametric polynomial systems that consist of linear combinations of monomials scaled by free parameters. We establish a relation between this dimension, Zariski denseness of the set of parameters for which the system has solutions, and the existence of nondegenerate solutions, which enables fast dimension computations. Systems of this form are used to describe the steady states of reaction networks modeled with mass-action kinetics, and as a corollary of our results, we prove that weakly reversible networks have finitely many steady states for generic reaction rate constants and total concentrations.     This report presents the findings of the “BY-COVID Spring 23 Use Cases Workshop Integration of socioeconomic data in observational studies on vaccine effectiveness”. The workshop was organised in the context of the BY-COVID project work package 5 (WP5) “A continuously evolving demonstrator project feeding the changing research questions that surface during an on-going pandemic to solutions” with the support of WP6 “Engage, train and build capacity with national and international stakeholders”. The event took place in The Hague, the Netherlands at the premises of NWO, the Dutch Research Council on April 26th 2023 and was co-organised by CESSDA/KNAW-DANS, Sciensano, and IACS. A particular focus was placed on the Netherlands and Belgium, featuring multiple key actors predominantly from the social sciences domain, both internal and external to the BY-COVID project. Bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, the workshop aimed to achieve the following goals: To promote further development of the BY-COVID Baseline Use Case, and stimulate community discussion around it; To highlight relevant initiatives and practices in the Dutch and Belgian landscape; To discuss issues surrounding socioeconomic data requirements, mobilisation, and protection in different national contexts in the form of breakout sessions; To highlight how real-world vaccine effectiveness can be estimated in a causal framework by combining administrative, health and care data with data on socioeconomic factors. The workshop report further describes the workshop, highlights the main points of discussion, and identifies outcomes and implications for the project moving forward. The report is a collaborative effort with contributions from workshop participants, and other community stakeholders. It also aspires to be of further use for the BY-COVID project and relevant initiatives.

    The ratio of branching fractions $R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}(\overline{B} \rightarrow D^{*} \tau^{-} \overline{\nu}_{\tau})$/$\mathcal{B} (\overline{B} \rightarrow D^{*} \ell^{-} \overline{\nu}_{\ell})$, where $\ell$ is an electron or muon, is measured using a Belle~II data sample with an integrated luminosity of $189~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+} e^{-}$ collider. Data is collected at the $\Upsilon(\mathrm{4S})$ resonance, and one $B$ meson in the $\Upsilon(\mathrm{4S})\rightarrow B\overline{B}$ decay is fully reconstructed in hadronic decay modes. The accompanying signal $B$ meson is reconstructed as $\overline{B}\rightarrow D^{*} \tau^{-}\overline{\nu}_{\tau}$ using leptonic $\tau$ decays. The normalization decay, $\overline{B}\rightarrow D^{*} \ell^{-} \overline{\nu}_{\ell}$, where $\ell$ is an electron or muon, produces the same observable final state particles. The ratio of branching fractions is extracted in a simultaneous fit to two signal-discriminating variables in both channels and yields $R(D^{*}) = 0.262~_{-0.039}^{+0.041}(\mathrm{stat})~_{-0.032}^{+0.035}(\mathrm{syst})$.     A liquid drop impacting a rigid substrate undergoes deformation and spreading due to normal reaction forces, which are counteracted by surface tension. On a non-wetting substrate, the drop subsequently retracts and takes off. Our recent work (Zhang et al., \textit{Phys. Rev. Lett.}, vol. 129, 2022, 104501) revealed two peaks in the temporal evolution of the normal force $F(t)$--one at impact and another at jump-off. The second peak coincides with a Worthington jet formation, which vanishes at high viscosities due to increased viscous dissipation affecting flow focusing. In this article, using experiments, direct numerical simulations, and scaling arguments, we characterize both the peak amplitude $F_1$ at impact and the one at take off ($F_2$) and elucidate their dependency on the control parameters: the Weber number $We$ (dimensionless impact velocity) and the Ohnesorge number $Oh$ (dimensionless viscosity). For low-viscosity liquids like water, the amplitude $F_1$ and the time $t_1$ to reach it are governed by inertial timescales, insensitive to viscosity variations up to 100-fold. For large viscosities, beyond this viscosity-independent regime, we balance the rate of change in kinetic energy and the rate of viscous dissipation to obtain the scaling laws: $F_1 \sim F_\rho\sqrt{Oh}$ and $t_1 \sim \tau_\rho/\sqrt{Oh}$, where $F_\rho$ and $\tau_\rho$ are the inertial force and time scales, respectively, which are consistent with our data. The time $t_2$ at which the amplitude $F_2$ appears is set by the inertio-capillary timescale $\tau_\gamma$, independent of both the viscosity and the impact velocity of the drop. However, these properties dictate the magnitude of this amplitude. Comment: Corrected a typo. The equation just before Eq. (3.11) must have sq(D_0) instead of D_0.     We study the criminal networks that will emerge in the long run when criminals are neither myopic nor completely farsighted but have some limited degree of farsightedness. We adopt the horizon-K farsighted set of Herings, Mauleon and Vannetelbosch (2019) to answer this question. We find that in criminal networks with n criminals, the set consisting of the complete network is a horizon-K farsighted set whenever the degree of farsightedness of the criminals is larger than or equal to (n 1). Moreover, the complete network is the unique horizon-(n 1) farsighted set. Hence, the predictions obtained in case of completely farsighted criminals still hold when criminals are much less farsighted.

    This introduction serves to contextualize six PROTECT country case study reports from the EU Horizon 2020 PROTECT research project. Drawing on ethnographic studies in selected arrival ports in France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Canada and South Africa, the reports discuss how actors and stakeholders in the field level governance of migration and international protection understand and operationalise the notion of vulnerability. In this introduction, we first discuss how the notion of vulnerability is understood in the Global Compacts for Migration and on Refugees. We go on to present some analytical approaches to vulnerability to frame the reports, and end by drawing out some cross-cutting themes from the case studies. In particular, we highlight certain structural challenges and adverse effects related to the increasing centrality of vulnerability in migration governance.
