In my work I present possibilities of oral history usage in history lessons in the Czech Republic. I focus on primary schools and present tasks and realization of concrete projects. Main task is communication among the children and narrators, and cooperation among the families and the school. In my paper is introduced Czech elementary education, connection of oral history and history lessons, thematic areas and proposals of three concrete projects. First project is about daily life in normalization. The second one named “Become an explorer” describes record of historical changes through the street name changes. The third one deals November’s events in the 1989 and its output is “living museum”. Students present here their knowledge and skills, which they gained at the school. With their creations they decorated walls of the classes and corridors of school.

The aim of this text is to briefly introduce practically oriented discipline called policy analysis, and to do so in the perspective of (applied) social anthropology. After the introductory definition of terms, which are crucial within the area of public policy, such as policy, policy studies, policy evaluation and policy analysis, I continue with the definition of the very policy analysis of which the explanation of its types and gradual steps towards reaching it are the necessary parts. Another part of the study summarizes the interrelation, interconnection and the enrichment of both disciplines – the policy analysis and the social and cultural anthropology. Several roles in which an anthropologist can assert himself/herself are presented in conclusion.

As we live in an ageing society, intergenerational cohesion represents an increasingly important theme. Sociological research has however shown that this cohesion is sometimes undermined by conflict or lack of respect between members of different generations. This is why this study aims to explore the mindset which fuels young adults’ expression of ageist attitudes toward seniors. The main questions are: What triggers hostile feelings in some young adults toward the elderly and what can lead young people to vent these feelings? A qualitative sociological research was used to answer these questions. Indepth interviews were attended by adult residents of the Czech Republic, aged 19-28. The research confirmed the findings of earlier social researchers; namely, that prejudice against the elderly is not only shared, but also commonly expressed. This indicates that the fight against age-inequality is currently in its early days. The research further revealed that the most likely explanation for young people’s ageist behaviour is their disrespect towards seniors. The reasons for this disrespect seem to be particularly: contempt for ageing as a process of decline, disapproval of Czech senior citizens’ passive lifestyles and the imitation of behavioral patterns where rude communication with older family members is the norm. The research concluded that the ageist behaviour of young adults towards seniors is not a consequence of any specific intergenerational conflict. More likely, young people view seniors as an easy target for venting their frustrations. As the article draws to a close, the author discusses the possibilities of dealing with these problems with the objective of reinforcing intergenerational cohesion in the Czech Republic. This article aims to propose new possibilities of the anthropological study of homeless people. The secondary objective is to investigate both the empirical and theoretical levels of these possibilities. Drawing from my own fieldwork of “street people”, I suggest four possible ways to look at future research topics: (a) urban adaptation (the traditional and problematic one); (b) urban geography of reciprocity; (c) “squat” becoming a place and (d) linguistic anthropology analysis. Finally, I will discuss the relationship of theory, empirical material and the validity of ethnographic research. This article is a critical discourse analysis of set of texts published by one of leading Czech neo-nazi internet servers. The author embracing the standpoint of radical democracy shows discoursive sequentiality of analyzed texts and development of the neo-nazi discourse according to events that took place before, during, between and after three major neo-nazi demonstrations in Janov and Přerov, Czech Republic in years 2008 and 2009. It is shown that the discourse uses the occurrence of local inhabitants of Janov and Přerov on demonstrations for construction of reality of a starting racial war and for legitimization of demonstrators’ violence against Roma inhabitants and police. The racist ideological basis of the discourse is also shown. The article explains how both successes and failures of all demonstrations are used as motivating discoursive tools for mobilization and propagation for following events and how does the discourse react to them.

The main aims of the following paper are to sketch general features of Lévy-Bruhl´s attitude to philosophy and its history and to show influence of his thought to 20th century philosophy of science. Lévy-Bruhl´s effort in ethnology and social anthropology, rooted in his philosophical views on human spirit, is presented as an insrument or a method to establish new and scientific theory of knowledge. His work is not presented only as a chapter belonging to history of philosophy, but also to show its influence on some of the most important persons in philosophy of science, namely Piaget, Bachelard and Koyré.

The aim of this study is to describe some of the advantages of participant observation in the study of the urban homeless. The specific way in which the homeless subsist has led local politicians to call them “the Clients of Repression”, thus the title of the article. Presently, the original concept of long-term stationary participant observation – as seen, for example, in Malinowski’s pioneering fieldwork – is not so common in the study of contemporary complex societies. Urban anthropologists increasingly focus on shorter iterative research visits among analyzed populations. In this article I will try to define participant observation and summarize the methodological procedures applied by Czech and foreign ethnographers of the homelessness. In addition, I will describe a day of my fieldwork spent in active participation in the common activities of “the Clients of Repression”, and I will accentuate some specific findings obtained during this day. Finally, I will emphasize some of the problematic aspects of my fieldwork (i.e. law violation) which constitute an inseparable part of participant observation among the homeless.

Caves represent portions of past landscapes that were, for a long time, used by humans and their ancestors for various purposes and therefore, they have been a focus of researchers for more than two hundred years. Accumulated artifacts, ecofacts, and sediments can be used to reconstruct the environments and lives of the past. Here, we describe current methods applied to excavations of cave sites with emphasis put on their interdisciplinary nature. The case of systematic interdisciplinary research is documented with regard to the Lapa do Picareiro limestone cave, located in central Portugal, approximately 100 km north of Lisbon. The cave sediments have been dated to between 45 and 8 kya BP. A wide range of evidence from the cave (artifacts, faunal and floral remains, sediments, etc.) is used to reconstruct past natural environments (e.g., Bicho et al. 2011; Haws 2012), including fauna (Haws and Valente 2006; Hockett and Haws 2009; Valente 2004), human diet (Hockett and Haws 2009) and socio-natural interactions (Haws 2012). The interdisciplinarity is a key to understanding a whole series of phenomena which would not otherwise be understood. The current scientific demand for high quality, complex research and publication is mirrored in an increasing trend of incorporating specialists from other fields in research design and management.

The past twenty-five years have seen the development of a sub-discipline in archaeology labelled “20th Century Conflict Archaeology” around the world. The sub-discipline is focused on the remains of the military, civil, political and religious conflicts of the last century. Traces of these events are examined using an interdisciplinary approach because many different sources have been left behind to serve the researchers of this field, each of which carries unique information hardly detectable from another point of view. While the First and Second World Wars have attracted the lion’s share of attention, in recent years the efforts of researchers have turned to the Cold War and to the most famous symbol of the era—the so-called Iron Curtain, a fence of barbed wire separating the Eastern and the Western blocs. The most famous part of the curtain is the Berlin Wall. Nevertheless, research of this topic in Czech academia remains marginalized. The aim of this paper is to present how these issues are studied abroad and outline opportunities to study this in the Czech Republic. Our examples are the Iron Curtain itself and the village of Maříž, in whose history the events of the last century left an indelible mark.
