    The antichromatin antibody (aCT) has been described as a useful marker for lupus nephropathy. The relevance of its nephritogenic potential may be appropriately evaluated in the context of renal histopathology. Therefore, the present study investigated the relationship of aCT with a particular histopathologic class of lupus nephritis (LN). Seventy-eight consecutive patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (ACR criteria) and active nephritis who underwent renal biopsy from 1999 to 2004 and with available frozen serum sample obtained at the time of biopsy were selected. aCT was measured by ELISA, and anti-dsDNA was measured by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) and by ELISA. All renal biopsies were revised in a blinded manner by the same expert renal pathologist. Charts were extensively reviewed for demographic and renal features obtained at the time of biopsy. The prevalence of aCT (≥20 U) was 59% with a mean titer of 74.3 ± 38.7U. Both aCT-positive and aCT-negative groups of patients had similar age, gender distribution, duration of lupus, and duration of renal disease. Anti-dsDNA was detected by IIF in 29.5% and by ELISA in 42.3% of the patients. Concomitant presence of both antibodies was observed in 63% (29/46) [anti-dsDNA by ELISA] and 45.6% (21/46) [anti-dsDNA by IIF] of the patients. Lower serum levels of C3 (73% vs. 40%, P = 0.0058) and C4 (82% vs. 46.7%, P = 0.0021) were more commonly observed in aCT ≥ 20 U patients compared to the aCT-negative group. It is important to note that the use of a higher cut-off value (≥40 U) for aCT test revealed a predominance of class IV LN (58% vs. 33%, P = 0.039) in aCT ≥ 40 U compared to aCT < 40 U group. The mean levels of proteinuria, serum albumin, and creatinine were markedly altered but were comparable in both groups (P ≥ 0.05). One fourth (26.3%) of the 19 patients with class IV LN and aCT ≥ 40 U had no detectable anti-dsDNA (ELISA). These data suggest that high-titer aCT seems to be a valuable biomarker for proliferative class IV of LN.

    Snakebite envenoming (SBE) is a neglected tropical disease with significant global morbidity and mortality. Even when antivenom is available in low-resource areas, health workers do not receive adequate training to manage SBEs. This study aims to develop and validate a clinical practice guideline (CPG) for SBE management across Brazil. A panel of expert judges with academic and/or technical expertise in SBE management performed content validation. The content validity index (CVI) score was 90% for CPG objectives, 89% for structure and presentation and 92% for relevance and classified the CPG as valid. A semantic validation was performed by analyzing focus group discussions with doctors and nurses from three municipalities of the Brazilian Amazon, after a 5-day meeting during which the CPG was presented. Two central themes emerged: knowledge acquired during the meeting and recommendations for improving the CPG. Based on these results, the CPG was revised into a final version. This study presents the successful development and validation process of a CPG for SBE management, which is targeted to a specific low-resource, high-burden setting. This development and validation process can be adapted to other settings and/or other neglected tropical diseases.

    RESUMO: O Brasil dispõe de grande manancial hidroelétrico, mas enfrenta desafios de oferta energética causados pelas variações do regime pluvial e por exigências crescentes referentes à manutenção dos biomas. Esta realidade tem impulsionado a busca por outras alternativas renováveis. Assim, objetivou-se com este trabalho analisar as possibilidades econômicas de aproveitamento de dejetos bovinos dos rebanhos de Alagoas para geração de energia elétrica nas propriedades. Uma vez que a energia elétrica é um insumo primário de larga aplicação, a geração da mesma permite a implantação de novas atividades econômicas nas propriedades. A partir da identificação dos rebanhos disponíveis no estado, foram definidas as capacidades de geração possíveis, estimados os custos de investimento e operacionais e por fim, calculadas as taxas de retorno e paybacks para as capacidades selecionadas. Os resultados mostraram que os paybacks descontados para potência instalada de 75kW, que demanda um plantel de 500 animais, encontra-se acima de 16 anos o que demonstra a pouca atratividade para esta escala. Este mesmo indicador reduz-se para um valor pouco mais de 6 anos para o limite superior de capacidade instalada de 1000kW. Uma vez que esta alta capacidade demanda uma fonte de mais de 13.000 animais, ela somente pode ser aplicada em um número muito restrito de propriedades no estado, caracterizado por fazendas de pequeno porte. A saída passa por desenvolvimentos para redução dos custos de investimento, associações de produtores e apoio governamental. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: dejetos animais, digestão anaeróbia, energia renovável. ABSTRACT: Brazil has a large hydroelectric source, but it faces energy supply challenges caused by variations in the rainfall regime and growing demands for the maintenance of biomes. This reality has driven the search for other renewable alternatives. This work analyzed the economic possibilities for the use of bovine wastes from the Alagoas herds for electric power generation in properties at different scale values. This allows them to be economically strengthened either by reducing the costs paid to concessionaires or by the possibility of industrialization activities with a decentralized and safe energy supply. From the identification of the sizes of herds in the state, we propose generation scales and analyze the rates of returns and payback returns for these plants. The results show that the discounted reimbursements for the installed power of 75kW, which require a stock of 500 animals, is above 16 years which shows little attractiveness for this scale. This same indicator is reduced to a little more than 6 years for the upper limit of installed capacity of 1000kW. Since this high capacity demands a source of more than 13,000 animals, it can be applied in a very restricted number of property in the state, characterized by small farms. The output goes through developments to reduce investment costs, producer associations and government support. KEYWORDS: animal waste, anaerobic digestion, renewable energy.

    Avaliou-se a produtividade do capim-elefante anão e do tifton 85 sob pastejo contínuo no noroeste do Rio Grande do Sul, utilizando-se 12 vacas da raça Holandesa, multíparas e com cerca de 100 dias de lactação. Foi aplicada a técnica dos animais reguladores para ajustes da carga animal de forma a manter a oferta de lâminas foliares de 4%. No primeiro ano experimental, o capim-elefante anão e o tifton 85 apresentaram diferenças significativas quanto às taxas médias de acúmulo de lâminas foliares (31,2 vs 22,6kg/ha/dia) e produção animal (17,4 vs 20kg de leite/vaca/dia). No segundo, o tifton 85 foi superior ao capim-elefante anão quanto à taxa de acúmulo de matéria seca de lâminas foliares (38,8 vs 21,9kg/ha/dia), capacidade de suporte (2157 vs 1084kg de peso vivo/ha) e produções por área (70 vs 41,3kg de leite/ha/dia). No segundo ano, em relação ao primeiro, o tifton 85 manteve 88% da capacidade de suporte e 80% da produção por área, enquanto o capim-elefante anão apenas 46% e 56%. A produção média de 17kg de leite/vaca/dia indica um potencial pouco explorado das gramíneas tropicais em sistemas de produção de leite, especialmente na região Sul do Brasil.

    Este artigo versa sobre a concepcao de curriculo de carater ampliado em Educacao Fisica e a teoria de ensino de Davidov e Leontiev como possibilidade de objetivacao da formacao humana na perspectiva omnilateral. Defende-se a necessidade de que a dinâmica curricular – o trato com o conhecimento, a sistematizacao escolar e a normatizacao das praticas escolares – se efetive em um curriculo de carater ampliado. Considera-se que o trato com o conhecimento envolve a necessidade de criar condicoes para que se de a transmissao e a assimilacao do saber escolar. Refere-se, portanto, a uma direcao cientifica da atividade de ensino do professor, ou seja, que este leve o estudante a entrar em atividade de estudo; de ascensao do conhecimento abstrato ao conhecimento teorico concreto, o que e propiciado pela organizacao do curriculo a partir de uma concepcao ampliada. Abstract Curriculum of broaden education and theory of teaching activity in school Physical Education This paper focuses on the conception of curriculum with broaden character in Physical Education and Davidov and Leontiev’s learning theory as possibility of focusing on human education in the omnilateral perspective. We endorse the necessity that the curriculum dynamics – dealing with knowledge, school systematization and standardization of school practices – becomes effective in a curriculum of broaden character. We consider that dealing with knowledge involves the necessity to create conditions that promote the transmission and assimilation of school knowledge. We refer therefore to a scientific direction of the teaching process, in other words, that the teacher leads the student to enter into study activity; from abstract knowledge rising to concrete theoretical knowledge, which is brought about by curriculum organization from a broaden conception. Keywords: Curriculum of broaden character. School Physical Education. Teaching activity. Omnilateral education. No presente trabalho foram preparados poliuretanos (PUs) segmentados. Primeiramente foi obtido um pré-polímero (PP) a partir da reação de 2,4 e 2,6 - diisocianato de tolileno (TDI) e poli(épsilon-caprolactona) diol (PCL). A PCL é um poliéster biodegradável que constituiu o segmento flexível do PU. O segmento rígido foi constituído por unidades uretânicas provenientes da ligação entre as extremidades isocianato do PP e as hidroxilas do extensor de cadeia: 1,4 - butanodiol (BDO), ou sacarose (SAC), ou glicose (GLY). Foram avaliadas as propriedades mecânicas e dinâmico-mecânicas dos poliuretanos obtidos e estas foram correlacionadas com os parâmetros estruturais. Os resultados foram justificados com base na intensidade das interações de hidrogênio, na mistura de fases, no volume dos extensores cíclicos e na presença de ligações cruzadas. Estes PUs estão sendo estudados com vistas à preparação de materiais biodegradáveis com propriedades mecânicas úteis.

    Authors: Fernando Rodrigues da Silva;

    O tomateiro (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) é comumente atacado por diferentes pragas. Tetranychus evansi Baker e Pritchard é um dos principais ácaros praga do tomateiro em alguns países. No continente africano, T. evansi tem causado até 90% de perdas nos cultivos de tomateiro. Recentemente, o ácaro predador Phytoseiulus longipes Evans foi encontrado na área urbana de Uruguaiana - RS, desenvolvendo-se sobre tomateiros de ocorrência espontânea infestados com T. evansi. O objetivo deste presente trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da liberação inoculativa de P. longipes na densidade populacional de T. evansi em plantios de tomateiro realizados em telados, assim como avaliar a distribuição daquele predador e sua associação com T. evansi em plantas cultivadas e silvestres na região de Uruguaiana. O efeito da liberação inoculativa de P. longipes foi estimado através da comparação da densidade populacional de T. evansi em folíolos de tomateiro coletados em parcelas com e sem liberação do predador. Os níveis populacionais de T. evansi foram em média muito baixos nas parcelas em que foi feita a liberação de P. longipes. A ocorrência natural de T. evansi e P. longipes em tomateiros foi avaliada através da determinação de níveis destes organismos sobre plantas em 4 parcelas constituídas por 40 plantas cada. Nem T. evansi ou P. longipes foi observado nos 3 campos de tomateiros instalados na área rural de Uruguaiana, confirmando que T. evansi não é uma praga de tomateiro na região, mesmo quando nenhum controle químico é aplicado para seu controle. No entanto, P. longipes ocorreu naturalmente no campo infestado artificialmente com T. evansi reduzindo a população deste ácaro. A distribuição de T. evansi e P. longipes na região de Uruguaiana foi avaliada através de coletas quinzenais conduzidas em Uruguaiana e em 5 municípios vizinhos. T. evansi apresentou uma ampla distribuição, enquanto P. longipes foi encontrado quase que exclusivamente na zona urbana de Uruguaiana e em associação com T. evansi. No primeiro trabalho, conclui-se que a liberação inoculativa de P. longipes pode manter a população T. evansi em baixos níveis populacionais em tomateiros cultivados em telado. No segundo, conclui-se que a ocorrência natural de P. longipes pode contribuir para manter reduzidos os níveis populacionais de T. evansi na região de Uruguaiana. No terceiro, conclui-se que a ocorrência natural de P. longipes no Brasil aparentemente limita-se a área urbana do município de Uruguaiana. Uma possível razão para a sua distribuição restrita pode ser o fato de que este foi apenas recentemente introduzido na região e ainda não teve tempo suficiente para se dispensar. Outra possível razão seria a prevalências de condições climáticas adversas, especialmente no inverno, podendo restringir a distribuição à áreas protegidas dos efeitos de ventos fortes, chuvas intensas, ou baixas temperaturas. O efeito destes fatores pode ser tal que a cada ano, o processo de dispersão natural do predador pode ser restringido em áreas não protegidas. Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is commonly attacked by different pests. Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard is one of the main tomato mite pests in some countries. In the African continent, T. evansi has caused up to 90% yield losses in tomato crops. The predator Phytoseiulus longipes was recently found in the urban area of Uruguaiana-RS developing on T. evansi infesting spontaneously growing tomato plants. The objective of the present work was to assess the effect of inoculative releases of P. longipes on the population density of T. evansi in screen-house tomato crops as well as to evaluate the distribution of that predator and its association with T. evansi on cultivated and wild plants in the region of Uruguaiana. The effect of the inoculative releases of P. longipes was estimated by comparing the population densities of T. evansi on tomato leaflets collected in plots with and without release of the predator. Population levels of T. evansi were on the average much lower in the plots where P. longipes was released. The natural occurrence of T. evansi and P. longipes on tomato plants was evaluated by determining the levels of those organisms on plants in 4 plots of 40 plants each. Neither T. evansi nor P. longipes were observed in any of the 3 tomato fields established in the rural area of Uruguaiana, confirming that T. evansi is not a pest of tomato in the region, even when no chemical is applied for its control. However, P. longipes occurred naturally in the field that had been artificially infested with T. evansi, reducing its population. The distribution of T. evansi and P. longipes in the region of Uruguaiana was assessed by bi-weekly samplings conducted in Uruguaiana and 5 neighboring counties. T. evansi had ample distribution, while P. longipes was found almost exclusively in the urban area of Uruguaiana in association with T. evansi. In the first work, it was concluded that inoculative releases of P. longipes can keep T. evansi at low population levels in screen-house tomato crops. In the second, it was concluded that the natural occurrence of P. longipes can contribute to maintain low population levels of T. evansi in the region of Uruguaiana. In the third, the conclusion was that the natural occurrence of P. longipes in Brazil seems almost restricted to the urban area of Uruguaiana. A possible reason for its restricted distribution may be that it was only recently introduced in the region and still did not have time to disperse. Another conceivable reason is that prevailing drastic weather, especially in the winter, may restrict its distribution to areas where it is protected from the effect of strong winds, heavy rainfall or low temperatures. The effect of those factors could be such that at each year the natural dispersal process of the predator could be halted in non protected areas.

    No setor de ensino superior privado, o aumento da concorrência e a busca por melhores resultados, com maior velocidade, estão criando novas demandas nestas instituições, forçando as mesmas a tornarem suas práticas de gestão mais eficientes e eficazes. Neste contexto, as instituições de ensino superior precisam de uma abordagem mais sistêmica sobre a avaliação de desempenho institucional, gerando indicadores adequados que meçam a efetividade das relações de causa - efeito da sua estratégia e auxiliando a tomada de decisão. Assim, este artigo tem por objetivo apresentar uma proposta de aplicação do BSC desdobrado nas áreas de gestão, ensino, pesquisa e extensão como um sistema de avaliação de desempenho em uma Instituição de Ensino Superior Comunitária (IESC). A pesquisa tem uma abordagem qualitativa, é exploratória e descritiva, adotando estratégias de pesquisa bibliográfica, documental e de estudo de caso. A pesquisa sugeriu que é possível desdobrar o BSC em uma IESC nas áreas de ensino, pesquisa, extensão e gestão. Desta forma, o sistema proposto permitirá a tradução da estratégia em termos operacionais, alinhando as atividades-chave, bem como envolvendo todos em uma só direção.

    This study was designed to evaluate the effects of a diet rich in fish contaminated with MeHg, mimicking the typical diet of the Amazon riverside population, in rats. Animals were randomly assigned to one of three groups with eight rats in each group: Group I-control, received commercial ration; Group II-received a diet rich in uncontaminated fish; Group III-received a diet rich in fish contaminated with MeHg. Treatment time was 12 weeks. Oxidative stress markers were evaluated, as well as the effects of this diet on DNA stability, systolic blood pressure (SBP), nitric oxide (NO) levels and histological damage in different tissues. There was a significant increase in SBP values in rats fed with MeHg-contaminated fish diet after the 10th week of the treatment. As far as oxidative stress biomarkers are concerned, no differences were observed in reduced glutathione and protein carbonyl levels, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase or δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase activities between the groups of animals receiving contaminated and uncontaminated fish diets. On the other hand, malondialdehyde levels increased significantly in rats fed with contaminated fish. NO levels were similar in all groups. DNA migration showed augmented in rats exposed to contaminated fish and histopathological analyses showed weak but significant leukocyte infiltration. Thus, we conclude that the MeHg-contaminated fish diet induced a slight lipid peroxidation and genotoxicity. However, these effects seem to be much less pronounced than when rats are exposed to aqueous solution containing CH3HgCl. Our findings support the contention that the chemical form of MeHg in fish or fish nutrients such as polyunsaturated fatty acids, Se or vitamin E could minimize the toxic effects of MeHg exposure in fish-eating communities.
