    AbstractModels to predict the effects of different silvicultural treatments on future forest development are the best available tools to demonstrate and test possible climate-smart pathways of mountain forestry. This chapter reviews the state of the art in modelling approaches to predict the future growth of European mountain forests under changing environmental and management conditions. Growth models, both mechanistic and empirical, which are currently available to predict forest growth are reviewed. The chapter also discusses the potential of integrating the effects of genetic origin, species mixture and new silvicultural prescriptions on biomass production into the growth models. The potential of growth simulations to quantify indicators of climate-smart forestry (CSF) is evaluated as well. We conclude that available forest growth models largely differ from each other in many ways, and so they provide a large range of future growth estimates. However, the fast development of computing capacity allows and will allow a wide range of growth simulations and multi-model averaging to produce robust estimates. Still, great attention is required to evaluate the performance of the models. Remote sensing measurements will allow the use of growth models across ecological gradients.

    This review provides the necessary background from astrophysics, nuclear, and particle physics to understand the cosmic origin of the chemical elements.     Abstract The control system developed for the fuel handling machnine of nuclear power plants contains seven microcomputers. Redundant hardware and software structure ensures high reliability and availability. The sensors are doubled and each set is connected to its own microcomputer for evaluation of measurements. The control program, coordinating seven electrical drives, is run on two identical microcomputers, and has access to both sets of measurement results. Two control desks are provided. The seventh microcomputer generates the digital picture of the working site around the actual position and the picture is sent to color TV monitors at the control desks. System reliability: failure of any part of the system causes an error message and no action. System availability: for emergency purposes, one of every pair of the identical subsystems must be operational. In this emergency mode unconditional reliability is lost.

    This paper is concerned with Polish e-type conjunctions that involve conjunction particles and their semantic properties. The possible interpretations of such con- junctions and the restrictions on the type of predicate they may combine with do not only pose problems for standard assumptions about distributivity and collectivity but also grant insight into the structure of plural predicates in general. The discussion thereof will bear on the observations that have been made with respect to the behavior of the determiner all in English (cf. Dowty 1987). Moreover, additional requirements on the context that arise in combination with collective predicates will be taken to suggest an analysis of conjunction particles in terms of focus particles ranging over subpluralities.

    In order to improve fuel efficiency, future aircraft will have reduced weight and increased wingspan. Such aircraft require active control systems to suppress ASE effects. ASE systems are often modeled in the grid based linear parameter-varying (LPV) framework, which captures the parameter varying dynamics. The controller is generally synthesized by solving Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) for the LPV model. Selecting the grid density for such control synthesis approach requires special attention. On the one hand, a too coarse grid might not capture the parameter variation of the dynamics accurately enough. On the other hand, solving LMIs for too dense grid can lead to numerical issues and computational cost. This is usually relaxed by synthesizing the controller for a coarser grid and the stability and performance are verified for a denser grid. A possible remedy for this drawback of grid-based LPV models is polytopic LPV representation. In such case the LMIs need to be solved only for the vertex systems of the convex polytopic hull. Various types of convex polytopic models can be obtained by Tensor Product (TP) model transformation. The aim of the paper is to derive polytopic models for ASE vehicles and to apply these models for flutter suppression control design. The goal is to have a small number of vertex systems and sufficient accuracy while keeping the conservativeness of polytopic modeling low. The aircraft under consideration is the mini MUTT (Multi Utility Technology Testbed) vehicle. Based on the polytopic representation a stabilizing state feedback controller and observer is synthesized. The effectiveness of the resulting control design is verified through numerical simulations.

    Asymptotic behavior of the singular value decomposition (SVD) of blown up matrices and normalized blown up contingency tables exposed to Wigner-noise is investigated.It is proved that such an m\times n matrix almost surely has a constant number of large singular values (of order \sqrt{mn}), while the rest of the singular values are of order \sqrt{m+n} as m,n\to\infty. Concentration results of Alon et al. for the eigenvalues of large symmetric random matrices are adapted to the rectangular case, and on this basis, almost sure results for the singular values as well as for the corresponding isotropic subspaces are proved. An algorithm, applicable to two-way classification of microarrays, is also given that finds the underlying block structure. to be submitted to a special ussue of JMVA

    An equality language is a relational structure with infinite domain whose relations are first-order definable in equality. We classify the extensions of the quantified constraint satisfaction problem over equality languages in which the native existential and universal quantifiers are augmented by some subset of counting quantifiers. In doing this, we find ourselves in various worlds in which dichotomies or trichotomies subsist.

    AbstractModels to predict the effects of different silvicultural treatments on future forest development are the best available tools to demonstrate and test possible climate-smart pathways of mountain forestry. This chapter reviews the state of the art in modelling approaches to predict the future growth of European mountain forests under changing environmental and management conditions. Growth models, both mechanistic and empirical, which are currently available to predict forest growth are reviewed. The chapter also discusses the potential of integrating the effects of genetic origin, species mixture and new silvicultural prescriptions on biomass production into the growth models. The potential of growth simulations to quantify indicators of climate-smart forestry (CSF) is evaluated as well. We conclude that available forest growth models largely differ from each other in many ways, and so they provide a large range of future growth estimates. However, the fast development of computing capacity allows and will allow a wide range of growth simulations and multi-model averaging to produce robust estimates. Still, great attention is required to evaluate the performance of the models. Remote sensing measurements will allow the use of growth models across ecological gradients.
