    Sister Marija Krucifiksa Kozulić (1852–1922) was a Croatian nun who is in consideration for beatification by the Vatican, which is facilitated by the identification of her 20th-century remains. Sister Marija was buried in a tomb in Rijeka, Croatia, along with other nuns including her biological sister, Tereza Kozulić (1861–1933). When the remains were exhumed in 2011, they were found in a deteriorated state and commingled with several other sets of remains. Thus, mitochondrial genome sequencing of the long bones was performed to sort the remains by mitochondrial haplotype. Two similar but unique haplotypes belonging to haplogroup H1bu were identified, and samples from these bones were subjected to autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sequencing. Although only partial profiles were obtained, the data were sufficient for kinship analysis with the profile of a paternal niece of Sister Marija (Fides Kozulić). The data indicate that it is 574,195-fold more likely that the two sets of skeletal remains represent 2nd-degree relatives of Fides than sisters who are unrelated to Fides. Although it is impossible to discern which set of remains belongs to Marija and which belongs to Tereza, forensic genomics methods have enabled identification of the sisters.

    This study estimates both conditional and unconditional cigarette price elasticity of quantity demanded in Croatia. Authors use Deaton’s method, also known as the Almost Ideal Demand-System (AIDS), to obtain consistent estimates of the cigarette price elasticity on the sample of Croatian households. The data from household surveys (HBS) conducted in Croatia for three periods (2010, 2011 and 2014 year) is provided by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Estimated unconditional cigarette price elasticity is −1.38 and estimated conditional price elasticity is −0.63. Simulation of the tax effects shows that rising specific excise tax for 10 percent would result in 2 percent decrease in cigarette consumption while total tax revenues would increase by 1.97 percent. This study provides evidence that the demanded quantity for cigarettes is responsive to their prices. Consequently, this implies that tobacco tax policy can be used as an efficient tool for reducing cigarette consumption in Croatia.

    Aim: To test if handprint measurements show sexual dimorphism in the Croatian population, and to develop population-specific sex estimation standards. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 adult volunteers from a Croatian population (50 males and 50 females) aged between 20 and 45 years. Using a fingerprint ink, we collected handprints of both hands on a paper sheet. We scanned handprints and took 13 measurements. Bilateral asymmetry and sexual dimorphism of the measurements was analyzed and sex estimation models were developed using linear discriminant analysis. Results: All measurements exhibited statistically significant sexual dimorphism (P<0.001). Univariate discriminant functions provided sexing accuracy from 75% to 92%. The highest accuracy rate (92%) and the lowest sexing bias (0%) was obtained using the handprint breadth. A multivariate discriminant function could estimate sex with 93% accuracy, but with more pronounced sexing bias (10%). Conclusion: We showed that handprint measurements could be used for sex estimation in the Croatian population with a high accuracy level. Therefore, they could serve as a valuable tool for biological profiling of perpetrators in criminal investigations when other evidence is not conclusive.

    Authors: Piplica, Damir; Budimir, Nina;

    The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the Croatian banking sector, including OTP bank, one of the leading banks on the market. This work investigates the specific impact of the pandemic on the portfolio quality of the Croatian banking system with the example of OTP bank's portfolio analysis, emphasising the Bank's key guidelines and reactions to the challenges of the pandemic. The pandemic has caused economic uncertainty, job losses and reduced client incomes. This resulted in an increased risk of non-performing loans in the portfolio of Croatian banks, especially in the most affected sectors, such as tourism and retail. OTP bank reacted quickly to the pandemic and clients were offered loan repayment moratorium options to minimize their financial burdens during the crisis. This temporarily reduced the pressure on clients and the Bank, but at the same time delayed the assessment of the real risks in the portfolio. Croatian banks, including OTP bank, increased provisions for possible future losses from non-performing loans in order to better prepare for challenges. They also conducted stress tests to assess how different scenarios might affect their portfolio. The pandemic has stimulated a greater need for digital banking and online services. OTP bank has made efforts in the further digitization of operations to ensure continuity and better client service during and after the pandemic. Furthermore, OTP bank cooperated with regulatory authorities and followed the guidelines of the Croatian National Bank in order to ensure stability and compliance with regulations during the crisis. COVID-19 pandemija imala je značajan utjecaj na bankarski sektor u Hrvatskoj, uključujući i OTP banku, jednu od vodećih banaka na tržištu. U ovom radu istražuje se specifični utjecaj pandemije na kvalitetu portfelja hrvatskog bankovnog sustava s primjerom analize portfelja OTP banke, uz naglasak na ključne smjernice i reakcije banke na izazove pandemije. Pandemija je prouzrokovala ekonomske neizvjesnosti, gubitak radnih mjesta i smanjenje prihoda klijenata. To je rezultiralo povećanim rizikom od nenaplativih kredita u portfelju hrvatskih banaka, posebno u sektorima koji su najviše pogođeni, poput turizma i maloprodaje. OTP banka brzo je reagirala na pandemiju i ponudila klijentima opcije moratorija na otplatu kredita kako bi im olakšala financijske terete tijekom krize. Ovo je privremeno smanjilo pritisak na klijente i banku, ali istovremeno odgodilo procjenu stvarnih rizika u portfelju. Hrvatske banke, uključujući i OTP banku, pojačale su rezervacije za moguće buduće gubitke od nenaplativih kredita kako bi se bolje pripremila za izazove. Također su provodile stres testiranja kako bi procijenile kako bi se različiti scenariji mogli odraziti na njihov portfelj. Pandemija je potaknula veću potrebu za digitalnim bankarstvom i online uslugama. OTP banka je uložila napore u daljnju digitalizaciju poslovanja kako bi osigurala kontinuitet i bolju uslugu klijentima tijekom pandemije i nakon nje. Nadalje, OTP banka surađivala je s regulatornim tijelima i pratila smjernice Hrvatske narodne banke kako bi osigurala stabilnost i usklađenost s propisima tijekom krize.

    Authors: PODRUG, DORIS;

    The rapid technological development of the past few decades has led to a shift away from traditional business models toward new models that rely on digital platforms to share underutilized goods or services. This phenomenon is known as the sharing economy, and it is significantly changing the consumer behaviour of millions of people worldwide. The expansive growth of the sharing economy and its dramatic impact on various aspects of today’s socio-economic system have fuelled increasing public interest in the last ten years. Many new players have entered the market in various fields, gaining significant importance, and some have even overtaken existing players. The sharing economy significantly changes business models in different industries and poses numerous economic, social, and legal issues. The aim of this paper is to identify trends in the development of the sharing economy concept, provide an exhaustive analysis of current knowledge through a review of relevant literature, and explore potential unexplored areas of the sharing economy. To this end, the paper offers an overview of the literature on the motivation and experiences of users, the influence of reviews on service selection, and the factors that influence pricing. In addition, the paper examines the motivation for participation, strategies, and behaviour of service providers. The paper underscores the importance of studying all sectors and platforms in the sharing economy, given that the largest number of studies to date relate to the area of accommodation. Ubrzani tehnološki razvoj posljednjih nekoliko desetljeća doveo je do odmicanja od tradicionalnog modela poslovanja poduzeća prema razvoju novih modela koji se oslanjaju na korištenje digitalnih platformi za dijeljenje nedovoljno iskorištenih dobara ili usluga, što je poznato kao ekonomija dijeljenja. Porast ekonomije dijeljenja značajno mijenja potrošačko ponašanje milijuna ljudi širom svijeta. Ekspanzivan rast ekonomije dijeljenja i njezin dramatičan utjecaj na različite aspekte današnjega društveno-ekonomskog sustava potiče sve veći interes javnosti posljednjih desetak godina. Na tržište su ušli novi igrači na mnogim poljima koji su stekli značajnu prednost, a neki su čak i nadigrali postojeće igrače. Ekonomija dijeljenja značajno mijenja modele poslovanja u raznim industrijama te nameće brojna ekonomska, društvena i pravna pitanja. Cilj ovoga rada je ukazati na trendove u razvoju koncepta ekonomije dijeljenja i pregledom relevantne literature pružiti iscrpnu analizu dosadašnjih spoznaja kao i sagledati potencijalna neistražena područja ekonomije dijeljenja. U radu se daje pregled literature o motivaciji i iskustvima korisnika, utjecaju recenzija na odabir usluga te čimbenicima koji utječu na formiranje cijene. Uz aspekt korisnika proučava se i aspekt pružatelja usluga, njihova motivacija za sudjelovanjem kao i strategije i ponašanje pružatelja usluga. Rad ističe važnost proučavanja svih sektora i platformi u ekonomiji dijeljenja na temelju spoznaje da se najveći broj dosadašnjih studija odnosi na područje smještaja.

    Working in groups has become an essential part of success of every organization operating in global economy. Therefore, the business sector has created an imperative for higher education institutions (HEIs) to modify study programs and prepare students to be effective team players. However, while group work has been highly encouraged among university students, their opinions on this practice remain rather neglected. In addition, the role of culture and gender in students’ perceptions of group work has received little attention. The purpose of this study is to examine how university students perceive group work in terms of its benefits and risks and whether their national culture and gender moderates these perceptions. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were employed to meet the research goal. Data were collected among Spanish, Croatian and international students from two European universities: University of Valencia in Spain and University of Split in Croatia. Results suggest that, although students seem to recognize the benefits of group work, they also perceive a considerable number of risks, especially Croatian students. This might be the reason why they don’t seem to prefer group work over individual work, despite their cultural background and gender.

    In the Republic of Croatia, the impact of ‘CSI’ series on the judicial system (the so-called CSI effect) has not been investigated so far up to now. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of the CSI effect on the operation of the judical system in the Republic of Croatia. An online survey among 104 lawyers was conducted. The results were the following: respondents believe that crime TV series did not influence the way investigations are conducted, their behaviour, court decisions and the way they communicate with the public. They feel that public expectations have changed in part due to crime TV series, but they also think that they have not influenced their behaviour or the decision-making of the courts. They also believe that crime TV series have partly influenced criminal behaviour and state that such series also partially simplify the ways in which the police conduct investigations. Regarding the way of understanding the operation of the judicial system, the respondents believe that crime TV series make it difficult to understand the Croatian legal system and do not accurately portray court proceedings. Respondents stated that crime TV series do not accurately show the availability and value of clues collected at the crime scene. We can conclude that the general attitude of the respondents is that crime TV series have no influence on themselves or the courts, but they believe that such series still leave a mark on the public which, under their influence, creates a misperception about the way the legal system works and functions. U Republici Hrvatskoj utjecaj CSI serija na pravosudni sustav (tzv. CSI efekt) do sada nije istraživan. Cilj ovoga istraživanja bio je ispitati utjecaj CSI efekta na rad odvjetničkog sustava u Republici Hrvatskoj. U istraživanju je primijenjena online anketa na koju su odgovorila 104 odvjetnika. Pokazalo se sljedeće: ispitanici smatraju kako kriminalističke televizijske serije nisu utjecale na način provođenja istraga, njihovo ponašanje, odlučivanje sudova te način na koji oni komuniciraju s javnošću. Smatraju kako su se očekivanja javnosti dijelom promijenila uslijed kriminalističkih TV serija, ali također misle da ona nisu utjecala na njihovo ponašanje kao i na odlučivanje sudova. Također, smatraju kako su kriminalističke TV serije djelomično utjecale na kriminalna ponašanja te navode kako takve serije, isto tako, djelomično pojednostavnjuju načine na koje policija provodi istrage. Što se tiče načina shvaćanja rada pravosudnog sustava, ispitanici smatraju kako kriminalističke TV serije otežavaju shvaćanje hrvatskog pravnog sustava te ne prikazuju precizno sudske procese. Ispitanici su naveli kako kriminalističke televizijske serije ne prikazuju točno dostupnost i vrijednost tragova prikupljenih na mjestu događaja. Možemo zaključiti kako je općeniti stav ispitanika da kriminalističke TV serije nemaju utjecaj na njih same kao ni na sudove - ali su mišljenja kako takve serije ipak ostavljaju trag na javnosti koja pod njihovim utjecajem stvara pogrešnu percepciju o načinu rada i funkcioniranju pravnog sustava.

    Authors: Piplica, Damir; Budimir, Nina;

    Authors: PODRUG, DORIS;
