    This dissertation uses the campaign of Colombia's Uwa indigenous people against oil extraction in their land as a case study to understand the impact of the state, the law and the market over the tactics and scale of social movements. It studies how the campaign shifted away from litigation, expanded its scale transnationally and started using the tools available in the global market economy to prevent oil exploration in the Uwa land. The dissertation suggests the need to understand social movement tactics as a complex, multidimensional phenomenon in order to capture the relation between activism and multiple institutions. Finally, it also provides a framework to understand the relation between different tactics and institutions that helps to explain the roles of economic, political, and legal factors in providing the resources and opportunities for tactical innovation and transnational activism.

    Power electronics design best configures available electrical devices—transistors, inductors, and capacitors—to realize a theoretical power conversion function in the smallest, lightest, cheapest, and most efficient manner. In particular, hybrid switched-capacitor converters are a contemporary and high-performance class of circuit topology utilizing both inductors and capacitors. To better understand how these converters behave and are realized in practice, this manuscript will explore several contributing design aspects—modeling, passive devices, and practical printed circuit board layout—applied to a particular circuit topology of active research interest.First, the thesis will explore the results of a comprehensive survey of commercial passive components and how their figures-of-merit might be used to inform converter design. The survey explores the capabilities of prominent types of discrete capacitors and inductors. Then this manuscript applies this survey to the design of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor bank on the dc-link of a single-phase power conversion system.Second, this thesis analyzes dynamical modeling for the flying capacitor multilevel (FCML) power converter, a topology with nearly inexhaustible switching state combinations. It presents a simplified derivation and abstraction of a conventional averaged Fourier-derived model for this FCML switching-circuit topology, and it provides extensions to existing work and explores design implications. Next, this manuscript outlines a methodology for deriving a functional, accurate, and computationally efficient discrete-time state-space dynamical model for the FCML converter; this model is validated with results measured from a high-performance hardware prototype.Finally, the thesis investigates the usage of multilevel converters to demonstrate the underlying feasibility of the single-stage buck-type power factor correction (PFC) rectifier. A high-performance multilevel converter prototype is developed with an especial focus on compactness, high efficiency, and low-inductance layout in the switching commutation loops. Then the theoretic input current harmonics, power factor, and total harmonic distortion of the buck PFC are derived and compared to the prevailing regulatory IEC current emission standards.

    The nanoscale confinement and coupling of electromagnetic radiation into plexcitonic modes has drawn immense interest because of the innovative possibilities for their application in light harvesting and light emitting devices (LEDs). Plexcitons arise from the coupling between two types of quasiparticles, plasmons and excitons, and can be distinguished by the strength of the coupling into strong and weak coupling regimes. Plexcitons have been used to modulate the rate of Förster-type resonance energy transfer in quantum dot assemblies and enhance the spontaneous emission rate in quantum dot LEDs. The clearest examples of a plexcitonic enhancement of photocatalytic reaction rates have been evidenced in hybrid systems wherein the strongly bound exciton found in 2D sheet-like semiconductors is coupled to the surface plasmon resonance of close-lying noble metal nanoparticles. Plexcitonic photocatalysts and solar cells aim to increase the lifetime of hot carriers and thereby enhance the quantum yields for energy harvesting. Since plexcitonics requires the placement of plasmonic and excitonic components in close proximity with one another to facilitate their coupling, it provides a rich arena for chemists and materials scientists to form deterministic and non-deterministic arrays and heterojunctions involving noble metal thin films and nanostructures, quantum dots and dye molecules. This review summarizes the dynamics of plexcitons in the various composite systems and provides an overview of the latest theoretical and experimental developments in the field of plexcitonics.

    Burkina Faso is a poor landlocked country with a narrow natural resource base and a rapidly expanding population of 15.8 million. This report, with the technical support of United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), provides a detailed, updated inventory of the existing social safety net programs and suggests policy measures that could improve their coverage, efficiency, relevance, and financial sustainability. This report shows that the scope and coverage of the existing social safety net system is too limited and that most interventions are fairly small in scale and designed as temporary programs. On average, excluding fuel subsidies, spending on social safety net programs was about 0.6 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from 2005 to 2009 - from 0.3 percent in 2005 to 0.9 percent in 2009, while about 20 percent of the population is food insecure and lives permanently in chronic poverty. Universal fuel subsidies are very expensive (0.7 percent of GDP in 2007) and have a very limited impact on the poorest docile (84 percent of the benefits go to the non poor). Among the remaining programs, food transfers are the main form of social safety net programs in Burkina Faso, accounting for 69 percent of total Social Safety Net (SSN) spending and over 80 percent of all estimated SSN beneficiaries in 2009 (excluding fuel subsidies). However, most of the financing for social safety net programs comes from external resources.

    We study fundamental problems for static and mobile networks. First, we consider the random geometric graph model, which is a well-known model for static wireless networks. In this model, n nodes are distributed independently and uniformly at random in the d-dimensional torus of volume n and edges are added betweenpairs of nodes whose Euclidean distance is at most some parameter r. We consider the case where r is a sufficiently large constant so that a so-called giant component (a connected component with \Theta(n) nodes) exists with high probability. In this setting, we show that the graph distance between every pair of nodes whose Euclidean distance is sufficiently large is only a constant factor larger than their Euclidean distance. This result gives, as a corollary, that the diameter of the giant component is \Theta(n^{1/d}/r). Then, we apply this result to analyze the performance of a broadcast algorithm known as the push algorithm. In this algorithm, at each discrete time step, each informed node choosesa neighbor independently and uniformly at random and informs it. We show that the push algorithm informs all nodes of the giant component of a random geometric graph within a number of steps that is only a constant factor larger then the diameter of the giant component.In the second part of the thesis, we consider a model of mobile graphs that we call mobile geometric graphs, and which is an extension of the random geometric graph model to the setting where nodes are not static but are moving in space in continuous time. In this model, we start with a random geometric graph and let the nodes move as independent Brownian motions. Then, at any given time, there exists an edge between every pair of nodes whose Euclidean distance at that time is at most r. This model has been recently used as a model for mobile wireless networks.We study four fundamental problems in this model: detection (the time until a target point---fixed or moving---iswithin distance r of some node of the graph); coverage (the time until all points insidea finite box are detected by the graph);percolation (the time until a given node belongs to the giant component of the graph) and broadcast (the time until all nodes of the graph receive a piece of information that was initially known by a single node).We obtain precise asymptotics for these quantities by combining ideas from stochastic geometry,coupling and multi-scale analysis.Finally, in the last part of the thesis, we revisit the push algorithm described above and study its performance in general regular graphs. Our goal is to understand the relation between the performance of the push algorithm and the vertex expansion of the graph.We prove an upper bound for the runtime of this algorithm that depends on the vertex expansion of the graph and is tight up to polylogarithmic factors.Then, we show that there exists a substantial difference between the impact of vertex expansion and edge expansion on the performance of the push algorithm. In particular, we prove the existence of regular graphs (which are also vertex transitive) that have constant vertex expansion and for which the runtime of the push algorithm is a factor of \Omega(log n) slower than on any regular graph with constant edge expansion.

    As the world begins to feel the effects of climate change, the frequency of droughts is increasing in the Horn of Africa. In Kenya, the drought and food crisis affect welfare through two main channels. The first channel is the increased mortality of livestock in drought-affected areas, which are home to 10 percent of the country's population. The second channel is by exacerbating increases in food prices, which are largely driven by worldwide price trends. Considering these two channels, this note identifies four broad policy changes that can reduce Kenya's future vulnerability to such shocks: (i) investment in people in the arid and semiarid lands; (ii) reform of Kenya's maize policy; (iii) review of the East African Community grain trade policy; and (iv) formulation of a unified social protection system.

    This dissertation uses the campaign of Colombia's Uwa indigenous people against oil extraction in their land as a case study to understand the impact of the state, the law and the market over the tactics and scale of social movements. It studies how the campaign shifted away from litigation, expanded its scale transnationally and started using the tools available in the global market economy to prevent oil exploration in the Uwa land. The dissertation suggests the need to understand social movement tactics as a complex, multidimensional phenomenon in order to capture the relation between activism and multiple institutions. Finally, it also provides a framework to understand the relation between different tactics and institutions that helps to explain the roles of economic, political, and legal factors in providing the resources and opportunities for tactical innovation and transnational activism.

    Power electronics design best configures available electrical devices—transistors, inductors, and capacitors—to realize a theoretical power conversion function in the smallest, lightest, cheapest, and most efficient manner. In particular, hybrid switched-capacitor converters are a contemporary and high-performance class of circuit topology utilizing both inductors and capacitors. To better understand how these converters behave and are realized in practice, this manuscript will explore several contributing design aspects—modeling, passive devices, and practical printed circuit board layout—applied to a particular circuit topology of active research interest.First, the thesis will explore the results of a comprehensive survey of commercial passive components and how their figures-of-merit might be used to inform converter design. The survey explores the capabilities of prominent types of discrete capacitors and inductors. Then this manuscript applies this survey to the design of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor bank on the dc-link of a single-phase power conversion system.Second, this thesis analyzes dynamical modeling for the flying capacitor multilevel (FCML) power converter, a topology with nearly inexhaustible switching state combinations. It presents a simplified derivation and abstraction of a conventional averaged Fourier-derived model for this FCML switching-circuit topology, and it provides extensions to existing work and explores design implications. Next, this manuscript outlines a methodology for deriving a functional, accurate, and computationally efficient discrete-time state-space dynamical model for the FCML converter; this model is validated with results measured from a high-performance hardware prototype.Finally, the thesis investigates the usage of multilevel converters to demonstrate the underlying feasibility of the single-stage buck-type power factor correction (PFC) rectifier. A high-performance multilevel converter prototype is developed with an especial focus on compactness, high efficiency, and low-inductance layout in the switching commutation loops. Then the theoretic input current harmonics, power factor, and total harmonic distortion of the buck PFC are derived and compared to the prevailing regulatory IEC current emission standards.

    The nanoscale confinement and coupling of electromagnetic radiation into plexcitonic modes has drawn immense interest because of the innovative possibilities for their application in light harvesting and light emitting devices (LEDs). Plexcitons arise from the coupling between two types of quasiparticles, plasmons and excitons, and can be distinguished by the strength of the coupling into strong and weak coupling regimes. Plexcitons have been used to modulate the rate of Förster-type resonance energy transfer in quantum dot assemblies and enhance the spontaneous emission rate in quantum dot LEDs. The clearest examples of a plexcitonic enhancement of photocatalytic reaction rates have been evidenced in hybrid systems wherein the strongly bound exciton found in 2D sheet-like semiconductors is coupled to the surface plasmon resonance of close-lying noble metal nanoparticles. Plexcitonic photocatalysts and solar cells aim to increase the lifetime of hot carriers and thereby enhance the quantum yields for energy harvesting. Since plexcitonics requires the placement of plasmonic and excitonic components in close proximity with one another to facilitate their coupling, it provides a rich arena for chemists and materials scientists to form deterministic and non-deterministic arrays and heterojunctions involving noble metal thin films and nanostructures, quantum dots and dye molecules. This review summarizes the dynamics of plexcitons in the various composite systems and provides an overview of the latest theoretical and experimental developments in the field of plexcitonics.

    Burkina Faso is a poor landlocked country with a narrow natural resource base and a rapidly expanding population of 15.8 million. This report, with the technical support of United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), provides a detailed, updated inventory of the existing social safety net programs and suggests policy measures that could improve their coverage, efficiency, relevance, and financial sustainability. This report shows that the scope and coverage of the existing social safety net system is too limited and that most interventions are fairly small in scale and designed as temporary programs. On average, excluding fuel subsidies, spending on social safety net programs was about 0.6 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from 2005 to 2009 - from 0.3 percent in 2005 to 0.9 percent in 2009, while about 20 percent of the population is food insecure and lives permanently in chronic poverty. Universal fuel subsidies are very expensive (0.7 percent of GDP in 2007) and have a very limited impact on the poorest docile (84 percent of the benefits go to the non poor). Among the remaining programs, food transfers are the main form of social safety net programs in Burkina Faso, accounting for 69 percent of total Social Safety Net (SSN) spending and over 80 percent of all estimated SSN beneficiaries in 2009 (excluding fuel subsidies). However, most of the financing for social safety net programs comes from external resources.
