    Human-driven environmental changes can induce marked shifts in the functional structure of biological communities with possible repercussion on important ecosystem functions and services. At the same time it remains unclear to which extent these changes may differently affect various types of organisms. We investigated species richness and community functional structure of species assemblages at the landscape scale (1km2 plots) for two contrasting model taxa, i.e., plants (producers and sessile organisms) and birds (consumers and mobile organisms), along topography, climate, landscape heterogeneity, and land-use (agriculture and urbanization) gradients in a densely populated region of Switzerland. Our study revealed that agricultural and urban land uses drove marked shifts in the functional structure of biological communities compared to changes along climate and topography gradients, especially for plants, while for birds these changes were comparable. Agricultural and urban land uses enhanced divergence in traits related to resource use for birds (diet and nesting), growth forms, dispersal, and reproductive traits for plants, while it induced convergence in vegetative plant traits (plant height and leaf dry matter content). These results suggest that contrasting assembly patterns may arise within and across taxonomic groups along the same environmental gradients as result of distinct underlying processes and 'organism-specific' environmental perceptions. Our results further suggest a potential homogenization of biological communities, as well as low functional diversity and redundancy levels of bird assemblages in our human-dominated study region.     The human impact on the relief is often very devastating: natural landforms are modified, damaged or destroyed and the intensity of human-induced processes even surpasses the natural ones. However, people also create new landforms which are interesting from geoconservation, educational, cultural and historical points of view. Thanks to these aspects, they also have a potential for geotourism, geoeducation and recreation. For the assessment of anthropogenic landforms (respectively anthropogenic geosites and geomorphosites), a method based on the concept of geomorphosties and taking into account the holistic approach to geotourism, is proposed. The article presents an example of anthropogenic landforms on geo-cultural site Velke Opatovice fortification site situated in the western part of the Archdiocese of Olomouc. Based on the detailed fieldwork, the inventory of landforms and other features, the assessment and some proposals for geotourist use of the site are presented.

    The work is focused on mapping the current state of waste textile management, its possible further processing in the Czech Republic and its environmental impact assessment. More specifically, it deals with the topic of sustainability in the textile industry, textile waste in terms of legislation, and environmental impact assessment using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. Also, it maps the situation in waste management in the Czech Republic and makes comparison with data available for the European Union (EU). Data collection on textile waste management was performed. The data are further used in LCA analysis and waste treatment methods are evaluated in terms of environmental impact using GaBi software. The lowest environmental impacts are associated with the re-wearing of waste textiles. A secondary production of cleaning cloths, as well as disposal by incineration or landfilling, are more demanding for the environment. In comparison with data from other European countries, the efficiency of textile waste management ranks the Czech Republic to the forefront in the EU. The most beneficial and cheapest solution of the problem, not only in the management of textile waste, is to reduce the production of goods, the supply of producers, and strengthen market requirements so that waste is generated as little as possible. Then, there will be no need to seek a solution to dispose of excess waste.

    While remote collaboration is not new in DH, it has had a profound impact on the DH research, education and community in the past couple of years due to the health, security and financial crises. If absorbed appropriately, it can also prove beneficial in overcoming the various environmental, geographical, mobility and other barriers in the future, making DH more resilient, inclusive and diverse. This is why the main objective of the proposed workshop is to develop a better understanding of the dynamics on the Digital Humanities work floor when researchers, teachers and/or professionals with different areas of competence engage in remote collaboration to solve humanities research questions, and to explore how education and training of humanities scholars, cultural heritage professionals and technical experts can help making remote collaboration across disciplines more efficient and effective, more creative and innovative, and more inclusive and rewarding for all participants. To this end, we invite submissions reporting on all aspects and stages of engaging in remote collaborative research and teaching in DH, including the obstacles encountered and solutions found. We are also welcoming position papers on the role of research infrastructures to better facilitate remote collaboration in DH.

    Organic aerosols (OA) account for a significant fraction (10 – 90%) of atmospheric particulate matter (Hallquist et al., 2009). The composition of organic aerosols is very complex and is usually characterized by their water solubility. Water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) constitute a large fraction of OA (10 – 80%) and consist of chemical species containing oxygenated functional groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, or carbonyl groups. NMR spectroscopy represents an alternative to commonly used techniques (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography-based techniques) for WSOC analysis. Our recently introduced method, called NMR aerosolomics, allows quantitative analysis of dozens of individual compounds from different aerosol samples. An important part of the characterization of aerosols is their classification by particle size. The analysis of individual compounds in the size-resolved fractions of the WSOC class has been performed only in a few studies that focus mainly on a particular subclass of compounds or use multiple analytical techniques.

    One of the distinguishing features of future autonomous cars is the ability to take into account and communicate with traffic infrastructure. Thereby detection and recognition of vertical traffic signing is an obvious requirement. Automatic recognition of traffic signs allows to check driver’s reaction time, if it is necessary to react, and in that way to contribute to and increase the road safety. It is especially important in the darkness when the retroreflective sheeting materials on the traffic signs help to increase visibility. Unfortunately, environmental conditions around the traffic signs exert considerable influence on the sign’s surface and alter their retroreflective properties. Many scientists explored different impacts on retroreflective properties of signs. Some impacts attracted more attention (such as detection distances and deterioration with age), some impacts were studied by several scientists only (such as dew and frost) and some factors were even omitted at all (e.g. the temperature during measurements of inservice signs). The paper is focused on the impact analysis of insufficiently explored factors influencing retroreflective properties of traffic sings. The findings of this research can support the development of further experimental research and could become a basis of reliable traffic signs usage on modern and smart roads.

    This paper examines the creation of fine resolution maps at 100 m x 100 m resolution using statistical downscaling for the area of Prague, as a case study. This Czech city was selected due to the fine resolution proxy data available for this city. The reference downscaling methodology used is the linear regression and the interpolation of its residuals by the area-to-point kriging. Next to this, several other methods of statistical downscaling have been also executed. The results of different downscaling methods have been compared mutually and against the data from the monitoring stations of Prague, separately for urban background and traffic areas. The downscaled maps in 100 m x 100 m resolution have been constructed for the area of Prague for three pollutants, namely for NO2, PM10 and PM2.5. Several methods of the statistical downscaling have been compared mutually and against the data from the monitoring stations. In general, the best results are given by the linear regression and the interpolation of its residuals, either by the area-to-point kriging or the bilinear interpolation. In the maps, one can see overall realistic spatial patterns, the main roads in Prague are visible through higher air pollution levels. This is distinct especially for NO2, while for PM10 and PM2.5 the differences between road increments and urban background are smaller as would be expected. The results of the case study for Prague have proven the usefulness of the statistical downscaling for the air quality mapping, especially for NO2.     In the Speicherbibliothek/CSLS libraries of ZHB Luzern, UB Basel, ZB Zuerich, UZH Zuerich and St. Gallen University Library store parts of their holdings. Storage room is tight and expensive in the cities and holdings are growing faster than sorting out of duplicates is being made. A centralized storage unit in a rural area with good traffic connection seemed a logical solution. In 2016 the Speicherbibliothek came into gear. It is build and equipped like a modern high density fully automated storage unit. With regard to monographs and anthologies the stored items belong still to the giving library and still appear in their catalogue system. These items are the so called individual stock of the partners and can be borrowed. With regard to journals things are different. Most of them are now part of the so called collective stock. The goal is a complete series of a stocked journal title. In case of a user request to copies out of a journal the pages will be copied and sent via a workflow system either to the reader or a library. The journal volume itself will not leave the storage unit anymore. The partners of Speicherbibliothek use the same workflow system (MyBib eDoc®) to manage and monitor their lending processes. In the background this system routes the incoming lending or copy requests from the library patrons to CSLS and manages the automated delivery of scanned pages.     Human-driven environmental changes can induce marked shifts in the functional structure of biological communities with possible repercussion on important ecosystem functions and services. At the same time it remains unclear to which extent these changes may differently affect various types of organisms. We investigated species richness and community functional structure of species assemblages at the landscape scale (1km2 plots) for two contrasting model taxa, i.e., plants (producers and sessile organisms) and birds (consumers and mobile organisms), along topography, climate, landscape heterogeneity, and land-use (agriculture and urbanization) gradients in a densely populated region of Switzerland. Our study revealed that agricultural and urban land uses drove marked shifts in the functional structure of biological communities compared to changes along climate and topography gradients, especially for plants, while for birds these changes were comparable. Agricultural and urban land uses enhanced divergence in traits related to resource use for birds (diet and nesting), growth forms, dispersal, and reproductive traits for plants, while it induced convergence in vegetative plant traits (plant height and leaf dry matter content). These results suggest that contrasting assembly patterns may arise within and across taxonomic groups along the same environmental gradients as result of distinct underlying processes and 'organism-specific' environmental perceptions. Our results further suggest a potential homogenization of biological communities, as well as low functional diversity and redundancy levels of bird assemblages in our human-dominated study region.     The human impact on the relief is often very devastating: natural landforms are modified, damaged or destroyed and the intensity of human-induced processes even surpasses the natural ones. However, people also create new landforms which are interesting from geoconservation, educational, cultural and historical points of view. Thanks to these aspects, they also have a potential for geotourism, geoeducation and recreation. For the assessment of anthropogenic landforms (respectively anthropogenic geosites and geomorphosites), a method based on the concept of geomorphosties and taking into account the holistic approach to geotourism, is proposed. The article presents an example of anthropogenic landforms on geo-cultural site Velke Opatovice fortification site situated in the western part of the Archdiocese of Olomouc. Based on the detailed fieldwork, the inventory of landforms and other features, the assessment and some proposals for geotourist use of the site are presented.

    The work is focused on mapping the current state of waste textile management, its possible further processing in the Czech Republic and its environmental impact assessment. More specifically, it deals with the topic of sustainability in the textile industry, textile waste in terms of legislation, and environmental impact assessment using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. Also, it maps the situation in waste management in the Czech Republic and makes comparison with data available for the European Union (EU). Data collection on textile waste management was performed. The data are further used in LCA analysis and waste treatment methods are evaluated in terms of environmental impact using GaBi software. The lowest environmental impacts are associated with the re-wearing of waste textiles. A secondary production of cleaning cloths, as well as disposal by incineration or landfilling, are more demanding for the environment. In comparison with data from other European countries, the efficiency of textile waste management ranks the Czech Republic to the forefront in the EU. The most beneficial and cheapest solution of the problem, not only in the management of textile waste, is to reduce the production of goods, the supply of producers, and strengthen market requirements so that waste is generated as little as possible. Then, there will be no need to seek a solution to dispose of excess waste.

    While remote collaboration is not new in DH, it has had a profound impact on the DH research, education and community in the past couple of years due to the health, security and financial crises. If absorbed appropriately, it can also prove beneficial in overcoming the various environmental, geographical, mobility and other barriers in the future, making DH more resilient, inclusive and diverse. This is why the main objective of the proposed workshop is to develop a better understanding of the dynamics on the Digital Humanities work floor when researchers, teachers and/or professionals with different areas of competence engage in remote collaboration to solve humanities research questions, and to explore how education and training of humanities scholars, cultural heritage professionals and technical experts can help making remote collaboration across disciplines more efficient and effective, more creative and innovative, and more inclusive and rewarding for all participants. To this end, we invite submissions reporting on all aspects and stages of engaging in remote collaborative research and teaching in DH, including the obstacles encountered and solutions found. We are also welcoming position papers on the role of research infrastructures to better facilitate remote collaboration in DH.

    Organic aerosols (OA) account for a significant fraction (10 – 90%) of atmospheric particulate matter (Hallquist et al., 2009). The composition of organic aerosols is very complex and is usually characterized by their water solubility. Water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) constitute a large fraction of OA (10 – 80%) and consist of chemical species containing oxygenated functional groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, or carbonyl groups. NMR spectroscopy represents an alternative to commonly used techniques (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography-based techniques) for WSOC analysis. Our recently introduced method, called NMR aerosolomics, allows quantitative analysis of dozens of individual compounds from different aerosol samples. An important part of the characterization of aerosols is their classification by particle size. The analysis of individual compounds in the size-resolved fractions of the WSOC class has been performed only in a few studies that focus mainly on a particular subclass of compounds or use multiple analytical techniques.

    One of the distinguishing features of future autonomous cars is the ability to take into account and communicate with traffic infrastructure. Thereby detection and recognition of vertical traffic signing is an obvious requirement. Automatic recognition of traffic signs allows to check driver’s reaction time, if it is necessary to react, and in that way to contribute to and increase the road safety. It is especially important in the darkness when the retroreflective sheeting materials on the traffic signs help to increase visibility. Unfortunately, environmental conditions around the traffic signs exert considerable influence on the sign’s surface and alter their retroreflective properties. Many scientists explored different impacts on retroreflective properties of signs. Some impacts attracted more attention (such as detection distances and deterioration with age), some impacts were studied by several scientists only (such as dew and frost) and some factors were even omitted at all (e.g. the temperature during measurements of inservice signs). The paper is focused on the impact analysis of insufficiently explored factors influencing retroreflective properties of traffic sings. The findings of this research can support the development of further experimental research and could become a basis of reliable traffic signs usage on modern and smart roads.
