In this paper, we introduce an innovative parameter that allows us to evaluate the so-called “relevant colors” in a painting; in other words, the number of colors that would stand out for an observer when just glancing at a painting. These relevant colors allow us to characterize the color palette of a scene and, on this basis, those discernible colors that are colorimetrically different within the scene. We tried to carry out this characterization of the chromatic range of paints according to authors and styles. We used a collection of 4,266 paintings by 91 painters, from which we extracted various parameters that are exclusively colorimetric to characterize the range of colors. After this refinement of the set of selected colors, our algorithm obtained an average number of 18 relevant colors, which partially agreed with the total 11–15 basic color names usually found in other categorical color studies. Durante los siglos XV y XVI, en un momento de represión y persecución religiosa e inquisitorial, las mujeres actuaron como cuidadoras informales con prácticas empíricas. El objetivo del estudio es destacar el proceso de profesionalización de cuidados de la mujer durante dicho periodo; conocer el papel de la iglesia, de los hombres en la crítica hacía las mujeres; presentar figuras femeninas españolas destaca das en la medicina durante este período. Material y método: El trabajo es una revisión narrativa de las fuentes secundarias relacionadas con el objeto de estudio, así como un análisis de las mismas desde la historia social, teniendo en cuenta las características de la época de estudio. Resultados: Durante los siglos XV y XVI, la iglesia, junto con la clase médica, condujo una represión hacía el cuidado femenino que influyó en su aceptación. Así mismo, el cuidado femenino generó desacuerdos y conflictos entre iglesia y sociedad, los cuidados de las mujeres informales, empezaron a formar parte de la clase médica profesionalizada. Conclusiones: Los hallazgos obtenidos refieren como a pesar del predominio del conocimiento teórico médico, las prácticas empíricas de las mujeres consiguieron ser aceptadas en determinadas condiciones y esto constituyó, con posterioridad, el reconocimiento profesional del cuidado. During the fifteenth and sixteenth century, at a time of repression and religious and inquisitorial persecution, women have acted as informal caregivers with empirical practices. The objectives of this article is to emphasize the process of professionalization of women’s care over that period and to know the role of the church and men in critical care to women, as well as presenting Spanish female figures who have excelled in medicine during this period. Methods: The task is a narrative review of secondary sources related with the object of study, as well as an analysis of the same sources from the social history, keeping in mind the characteristics of the era of study. Results: During the centuries XV and XVI, the church, along with the medical class, led to a suppression of feminine care that influenced their acceptance. Thus, feminine care generated disagreement and conflict between the church and society and the informal women’s care began to be part of the professionalized medical profession. Conclusions: The findings from this study highlight the acceptance of female empirical practices, in contrast to the theoretical knowledge of medical and subsequently the inclusion of women in professional care.

This article investigates a series of artworks and design objects damaged during the Planalto Riots on the 8th of January, 2023. Whereas the media quickly picked up the staggering costs of repairing the objects, this article reflects on how these objects' symbolic meaning and material history were affected by the traumatic confrontation with the neofascist Bolsonarismo movement. The overall aim is to engage with the damaged objects trying to include their perspective into the history of the Planalto Riots. The article thus highlights the iconoclastic dimension of contemporary Brazilian neofascism, which is here seen to resonate with the self-fashioning of the Bolsonarismo-movement as the enemy of modernity. By a close reading of the damaged objects, the article attempts to make sense of the symbolic dimension of neofascist violence as this was dramatized in the riots, for example, as an abuse of Justice and as an aggressive resentment toward the representation of Black women in sites of governmental power. However, the article also proposes that the objects analyzed in this study should not simply be seen as powerless victims. Instead, the rioters' violence seems to have activated their symbolic meaning and material force of resistance. The article finally argues that the Planalto Riots visualized the need to engage more profoundly in questions concerning the role and agency of art and design installed at the governmental sites in Brasilia and to what extent these could be seen resonate with an ‘authoritarian and bloody legacy’ (Thotti, 2023) that continues to haunt Brazilian society. Este artigo investiga uma série de obras de arte e design danificados durante os motins do Planalto em 8 de janeiro de 2023. Enquanto a mídia rapidamente percebeu os custos exorbitantes de consertar as obras, este artigo reflete sobre o significado simbólico e a história material desses objetos e como esses foram afetados pelo traumático confronto com o movimento bolsonarista. O objetivo é tentando incluir a perspectiva dos objetos danificados na história dos motins do Planalto. O artigo destaca, assim, a dimensão iconoclasta do neofascismo brasileiro, que é aqui vista em ressonância com a ideologia do movimento bolsonarista como inimigo da modernidade. Através de uma leitura dos objetos danificados, o artigo tenta dar sentido à dimensão simbólica da violência neofascista, tal como foi dramatizada nos motins, por exemplo, como um abuso da Justiça e como um ressentimento agressivo contra a representação das mulheres negras em instituições de poder governamental. No entanto, o artigo também propõe que os objetos analisados neste estudo não sejam vistos simplesmente como vítimas. Em vez disso, a violência dos manifestantes parece ter ativado seu significado simbólico e sua força material de resistência. O artigo finalmente argumenta que os motins do Planalto visualizaram a necessidade de se envolver mais profundamente nas questões relativas ao papel e agenciamento da arte nas sedes governamentais em Brasília e até que ponto estes poderiam ser vistos como ressoando com um 'legado autoritário e sangrento' (Thotti, 2023) que continua assombrando a sociedade brasileira. The way in which humanity’s past is categorized has a considerable impact on people’s perceptions of history. Hence, it is crucial for history professors to reflect on and be aware of how various periodizations may affect their teaching. This paper comprises an overview of research concerning periodization and its potential influence on history teaching. Our aspiration is that professional educators will greatly benefit from the information presented. The majority of the research has been found by utilizing the databases ERC, ERIC and SwePub. Remaining material have either been introduced to us during previous courses at Malmö University or been encountered as cited sources in previously chosen research articles. All relevant information has been utilized in the construction of this overview, and there has been no valuation regarding researchers’ potential standpoints on the matter. Our investigation has made visible that periodizations, regardless of their design, tend to be exclusionary and misleading. The eurocentric periodization in particular has been repeatedly criticized by historians due to its evident glorification of the Occident. The eurocentrism frequently tied to periodization often impinges on history teaching materials; something which is bound to affect pupils’ perceptions of the past. In an increasingly globalized world,diverse ideas of history have come to collide in heterogeneous classrooms. Therefore, it is imperative for teachers to discuss various understandings of bygone days with their students. In spite of its apparent flaws, research indicates that periodization is a necessity after all. The division of the past into manageable chunks constitutes a vital foundation most requisite for pupils’ learning. Surprisingly, a deficient amount of research has been conducted regarding periodization and its relation to history teaching. Needless to say, the subject deserves further recognition, as periodization is a historiographical tool used almost everywhere. 

The following study serves to develop consciousness about the smaller, not very well-known,emigration from the two southern Swedish cities of Växjö and Kalmar, which are situated inthe province of Småland, to Germany between 1865 and 1914. By using the digital archive ofEmiWeb, the gender, age and marital status of the emigrants have been analyzed and theyhave been categorized into three different social classes depending on the title or occupationthey had at the time of emigration. Furthermore, the results of the research of the two citieshave been compared with each other which resulted in a lot of similarities between the citieswhere the greatest part of the emigrants were between the ages of 20 and 29, unmarried, andpart of the working class. Overall, every age group was represented which also includedindividuals over the age of 50 and children between the ages of 0 and 9. Members of themiddle class and bourgeoisie were also present but to a lesser extent. Concerning the gender among the emigrants, the results of this study show that the proportion of women is greaterthan that of men, foremost in the first of the five periods in which this study is divided. Altogether this study provides a deeper insight and understanding of which people emigratedto Germany. However, the number of unregistered emigrants hinders the capacity to present areliable and comprehensive generalization about them.

Abstract: The 'Management Platform for the Cultural Heritage of eastern Cuba' was developed in collaboration among the Universidad de Oriente and the University of Antwerp with the support of the VlirUos Program. It shows the results of research carried out by professors from the Universidad de Oriente. In its content there are documents on the built heritage of the city of Santiago de Cuba, the documentary heritage of notarial documents from the five eastern provinces, the audiovisual heritage with documentaries produced in eastern Cuba from 1986 -2016, as well as other documents that support the heritage values of the Universidad de Oriente. Its development has a multidisciplinary approach, it is flexible and secure, it facilitates the relationship among content and cross-searches, it allows the management of geographic information. From all the stored information, statistical reports are created that support decision-making about preventive conservation and the valorization of cultural heritage.

The paper reports an historical-archaeological study of a place in Stockholm’s Old Town that has been associated with German immigrants since the 12th century. Today’s Juno Quarter was once the site of a hall that hosted the ceremonies and feast-day celebrations of the Saint Gertrud guild. Historical sources say it was the largest of some 20 guildhouses in medieval Stockholm, yet nothing is known about its size and shape, or whether and how it was incorporated into the chapel built on the site in 1580 or the church that stands there today, built in 1682. Drawing on the ideas and techniques of buildings archaeology, the undercroft is analysed with the aim of situating the place of the guildhouse in the space of medieval Stockholm, at the crossroads between royal power (it lay down the hill from the castle), clerical power (it was in the shadow of the Blackfriars monastery, dismantled after the Reformation) and commercial power (it would have overlooked the harbour where the Baltic Sea met Lake Mälaren, on which iron ore was transported from the north, bound for the continent). With the use of analogies, the place that the Stockholm Germans made for themselves is situated in the larger context of a medieval Europe undergoing dynamic urbanisation, and the rise of a cosmopolitan mercantile class.

This study aims to analyze the motif of Julia Margaret Cameron’s photograph The Rosebud Garden of Girls from 1868 regarding its literary sources, codes and how the women are depicted. The purpose is to find out whether the photograph romanticize or challenge the Victorian conventions. The applied method is Erwin Panofskys iconographical and iconological analysis methods. The theoretical framework consists of art historian Griselda Pollocks report regarding private and public spheres and how women and men are divided between these. Art historian Leena-Maija Rossi’s reasoning concerning female masquerade has also contributed a theoretical basis. The result shows a paradoxical picture of the Victorian view on women and how this is reflected in The Rosebud Garden of Girls.
