description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2021 Turkey EnglishSciendo Ali Tuğrul Akin; Emin Kaymak; Emel Öztürk; Derya Karabulut; Nurhan Kuloglu; Tayfun Ceylan; Ayşe Toluk;Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the therapeutic effects of Chloroquine (CLQ) against Adriamycin (ADR) induced hepatotoxicity. ADR is a chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of many cancer types, but it causes hepatotoxicity. CLQ is used as an anti-inflammatory drug in the treatment of malaria, rheumatoid arthritis, and pneumonia caused by Covid-19. Rats were divided into four groups: Control group, ADR group (2 mg/kg Adriamycin, one in three days for 30 days, i.p.), CLQ group (50 mg/kg Chloroquine, per day for 30 days, i.p.), ADR+CLQ (2 mg/kg Adriamycin, one in three days for 30 days, i.p. and 50 mg/ kg Chloroquine, per day for 30 days, i.p.). Animals were sacrificed, and liver tissues were extracted for further examinations. Histopathological changes in liver tissues were scored and IL-17 immunostaining was performed to determine the expression levels among experimental groups. Bodyweights in the ADR group decreased significantly compared to the Control group and CLQ group. Furthermore, bodyweight in ADR+CLQ group was significantly higher compared to ADR group. The histopathological score was significantly higher in ADR group when compared to Control and CLQ group while CLQ administrations reduced the damage induced by ADR in the ADR+CLQ group. IL-17 immunoreactivity was considerably increased in the ADR group. On the other hand, IL-17 expressions of ADR+CLQ were substantially less compared to ADR group. We suggest that CLQ can be used as a therapeutic agent to reduce the detrimental effects of ADR, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object 2021 Turkey TurkishKapadokya Üniversitesi İçigen, Melih;İçigen, Melih;Pandemi sürecinde sokağa çıkma yasağı, evden çalışma ve yüz yüze sosyalleşme mekanlarının; restoranların, eğlence yerlerinin kapatılması insanların daha fazla evde zaman geçirmelerine neden olmuştur.

The study was quasiexperimental and quantitative. It had a pretest-treatment-posttest design. As the treatments, either videos or handouts were accompanied by descriptive paragraph assignments which the participating students were required to write. The purpose of accompanying either videos or handouts was providing the learners with additional guides to help them write appropriate and accurate descriptive paragraphs. The study was conducted during the Covid-19 crisis. The participants were 56 Turkish learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at pre-intermediate level of proficiency. They were receiving virtual education due to school closures because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The participants were assigned to two groups, each of which included 28 learners. One group was provided with educational videos, relevant to the given assignment. The other group was given similar information via handouts. The results of the independent samples t-test indicated that the group that received videos significantly outperformed the one that received handouts. Consequently, the study highly recommends EFL teachers utilize this technique in their classrooms.

The use of fictional settings, which are remote in space and time; an emphasis upon the power of imagination; and the representation of imaginary technological and scientific developments may lead speculative fiction to be considered to be detached from reality. However, this approach has undergone a radical change within the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, as adopting a novel attitude has become necessary. Our lives have become similar to the lives of the characters in literary dystopias and science fiction texts. Within this literary tradition that projects fictional alternative world scenarios, there exist numerous speculative texts about pandemics and epidemics. COVID-19 has increased the national and international interest in the sub-genres of speculative fiction such as science fiction, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction, and dystopia. The aim of this study is therefore to reveal the interconnection between speculative fiction and the real world through brief references to relevant exemplary texts and to discuss the significance of this literary tradition in understanding the present and the future with specific references to its generic features. The ultimate aim of this study will be to prove how speculative works can be guiding and cautionary texts in understanding the possible future scenarios.

This research utilized a mixed-methods design. The data were gathered from 159 EFL teachers in Turkey via a questionnaire, including both open-ended questions and close-ended items on Likert-scale format. The quantitative data were analyzed by calculating frequency and percentages and the open-ended questions were analyzed thematically. Turkish EFL teachers generally had positive perceptions and views about technology. The majority of the teachers stated that they can use technology as an instructional aid and have integrated technology into their online class syllabuses to improve the students’ understanding and promote student engagement in higher-order thinking skills. However, over two-thirds of the participants stated that they think they need more training in the use of technology for teaching, yet those who were proficient mentioned various useful PC software, cell phone applications, and websites, suchas PowerPoint, Canva, Prezi, Mentimeter, Microsoft Teams, Google Form, Youtube Videos, Smart Boards activities, MindMeister, Wordwall, Classtools, Kahoot, Biteable, coursebooks iTools, Quizizz, Quizlet, Pinterest, Quizshow, Padlet, iSLCollective, Baamboozle, Master Voc, Wizer.me, Liveworksheets, Book Creator, Toontastic 3D, Screencast-O-Matic, FlexClip. This research has been done in the context of Turkey; however, EFL teachers, policy makers, and institutions worldwide can benefit from the results of the study to enhance their online education system.
