    Tämän opinnäytetyön aiheena on mallinnetun ja reaaliaikaisesti renderöidyn, ensisijaisesti virtuaalitodellisuutena (VR) käytettäväksi tarkoitetun, 3D-ympäristön hyödyntäminen mahdollisimman tehokkaasti sekä markkinoinnissa että viestinnässä. Työn tavoite on esitellä keinoja, jotka auttavat asiakasyrityksiä näkemään VR-tuotannon kannattavuus markkinoinnin lähtökohtana, osoittamalla miten virtuaalitodellisuuteen tarkoitettua reaaliaikamallia voidaan lisäksi käyttää helposti ja kustannustehokkaasti tuottamaan mediasisältöjä erilaisiin käyttötarkoituksiin. Lisäksi työssä esitellään käytännön keinoja VR:n käytön hyödyn maksimoimiseen promootio- ja esittelytilanteissa. Työn perustana on toteutettuja markkinointitoimenpiteitä Suomen mittapuun mukaan kokoluokaltaan suurille yrityksille. Työssä mainitut toteutukset on tuottanut Zoan Oy yhteistyössä asiakasyritysten (OtavaMedia, Stora Enso, Silja–Tallink, Suomen Kansallismuseo, Finnair, Business Finland ja Vantaan Kaupunginkirjasto), lisätyn todellisuuden applikaatiota tuottavan Arilynin, sekä markkinointitoimisto Folk Finlandin kanssa. Lopputuloksena on kuvaus loogisesta ja käytännönläheisestä VR-ekosysteemistä, jonka avulla VR-tuotantojen kannattavuutta ja ostettavuutta voidaan lisätä markkinoinnin ja viestinnän tarkoituksiin.

    Insinöörityön tarkoituksena oli kehittää virtuaalitodellisuussovellus, joka määrittää kaikki yleisimmät nykyään käytössä olevat virtuaalitodellisuuslaitteet toimimaan sen kanssa. Työn oli tarkoitus toimia pohjana uutta virtuaalitodellisuussovellusta tai -peliä rakennettaessa niin, ettei kehittäjän tarvitse määritellä useaa laitetta erikseen aloittaessaan sovelluskehitystä ja täten hänen työnsä helpottuu. Sovelluksen tilasi Helsinki XR Center, joka on Metropolia Ammattikorkeakoulun luovien alojen yhteydessä toimiva keskus ja jonka tarkoitus on yhdistää virtuaalitodellisuuteen keskittyvää tutkimus-, startup- ja yritystoimintaa sekä antaa opiskelijoille verkostoitumismahdollisuuksia alalle. Insinöörityönä tehtyyn mallipohjasovellukseen rakennettiin laitteiden automaattinen määritys sekä visuaalinen näkymä, josta näkee virtuaalitodellisuuslasien ja ohjaimien tiedot, painetut painikkeet ja ohjaimien sijainnit visualisoituna, minkä lisäksi sovellus kerää kyseiset tiedot myös tekstitiedostoihin kehityksen helpottamiseksi. Insinöörityön lopputuloksena syntyi valmis sovellus, joka testeissä todettiin toimivaksi useilla yleisillä virtuaalitodellisuuslaitteilla. Työn on tarkoitus toimia ladattavana ja muokattavana mallipohjana kehittäjille heidän työnsä helpottamiseksi. Sovelluksen voi ladata esimerkiksi Unity-projektina ja alkaa rakentaa omaa sovellustaan tai peliään suoraan sen päälle. Työn kehitykseen käytettiin Unity-versiota 2020.3.11f1,OpenXR-liitännäisen versiota 1.2.2 ja XR Interaction Toolkit -liitännäisen versiota 1.0.0-pre.4. The subject of this thesis was to develop a virtual reality application template that will define settings for all the major VR devices to be used with it. The application will be used as a template for a VR game or software so that the developer will have less work with defining the settings for the devices. This application was created for Helsinki XR Center, a center located in the connection of Metropolia’s creative industries. The aim of Helsinki XR Center is to connect startup, research, and business activities related to virtual reality and to help students network with the industry. An automatic defining of the devices was built into the template as well as a visual scene that the developer can see the info about the VR headset and controllers. In addition, the application collects data about the usage of the devices into log text files. The final product of the engineering work was a finished application that was tested with several common virtual reality devices. The purpose of the project is to be a downloadable and editable template for VR developers. It is possible to download the application for example as a Unity project and to start to build a new application or game on top of it. The application was built using Unity version 2020.3.11f1, OpenXR plugin version 1.2.2, and XR Interaction Toolkit version 1.0.0-pre.4.

    VR technology is becoming more common every year and is used for many things, such as entertainment and education. Due to the popularity of VR technology, VR games are also expected to see an increase in player numbers over the next years. In this work, the engagement between PC and VR games was investigated. The study was carried out on a group of test subjects. Half of them did the test by playing the PC version, and the other half by playing the VR version. After the test, they completed a questionnaire, the results of which were compared with previous studies. The results showed that both in this study and in previous studies, subjects experienced loss of sense of time and forgot external stimuli when playing the VR version. The results suggest that is easier to enter the flow state in the VR version than in the PC version. VR-teknologia yleistyy vuosi vuodelta, ja sitä käytetään moniin asioihin kuten viihteen kuluttamiseen ja koulutukseen. Teknologian yleistymisen odotetaan lisäävän VR-pelien suosiota seuraavien vuosien aikana. Tässä työssä tutkittiin mukaansa tempautuvuutta PC- ja VR-pelien välillä. Tutkimus toteutettiin koehenkilöryhmälle. Puolet heistä teki testin pelaamalla PC-versiota, ja toinen puolisko pelaamalla VR-versiota. Testin jälkeen koehenkilöt täyttivät kyselyn, jonka tuloksia verrattiin aiempiin tutkimuksiin. Tuloksista kävi ilmi, että niin tässä työssä tehdyssä tutkimuksessa, kuin aiemmissa tutkimuksissa koehenkilöt kokivat ajantajunnan menettämistä sekä ulkoisten ärsykkeiden unohtamista VR-versiota pelatessa. Tuloksien perusteella vaikuttaa siltä, että flow-tilaan on helpompi päästä VR-versioissa kuin PC-versiossa.

    WiFi 7 on uusin markkinoille julkaistava WiFi standardi, joka lupaa sekä suuremman kaistanleveyden että merkittävästi pienemmät viiveajat. Nämä standardit eivät kuitenkaan määritä laitteiden tarkkaa toimintaa, joten markkinoille julkaistavissa laitteissa voi olla toiminnallisesti suuriakin eroja. Tässä työssä esitellään ohjelmistokehityksen sovelluksista createch ja suoratoisto sekä arvioidaan WiFi 7 laitteiden vaikutuksia kyseisten sovellusalueiden toimintaan. Työssä esitellään myös tutkimushetkellä markkinoilla olevien WiFi 7 laitteiden ominaisuuksia sekä arvioidaan niiden käyttöönoton kannattavuutta. Arvioinnin tukena käytetään laitteiden myyntihintaan suhteutettua kaistanleveyttä. Laitekohtaisessa arvioinnissa todettiin, että älypuhelimia lukuun ottamatta WiFi 7 laitteiden käyttöönotto on tutkimushetkellä kannattavaa. Eniten hyötyä WiFi 7 laitteista on henkilöille, joiden käyttökohteet vaativat reaalitaikaisuutta. Ohjelmistokehityksen sovelluksista erityisesti createch hyötyy WiFi 7 laitteista, koska se hyödyntää paljon VR-teknologiaa. WiFi 7 laitteiden merkitys tulee olemaan suuri myös tulevaisuudessa korkeamman kuvanlaadun sekä interaktiivisten sisältöjen yleistymisen seurauksena. WiFi 7 is the newest available WiFi standard, which promises larger bandwidth and lower latency than its predecessors. These standards do not strictly determine the attributes of a device, thus there can be a lot of performance differences between the devices released to the market. This work aims to evaluate the viability of currently available WiFi 7 devices and assess the effect of those devices on different applications of software engineering. To help with the evaluation, the device’s maximum bandwidth proportional to the sales price is calculated for each device. As a result of this work, it is determined that WiFi 7 devices, excluding smartphones, are viable at the time of this research. WiFi 7 devices are the most beneficial to users who regularly use real-time applications. Out of the software development applications reviewed in this work, createch benefited the most due to the high usage of VR technology. The importance of WiFi 7 devices is expected to grow as larger screen resolutions and interactive content become more common.

    Insinöörityön tarkoituksena oli kehittää virtuaalitodellisuussovellus, joka määrittää kaikki yleisimmät nykyään käytössä olevat virtuaalitodellisuuslaitteet toimimaan sen kanssa. Työn oli tarkoitus toimia pohjana uutta virtuaalitodellisuussovellusta tai -peliä rakennettaessa niin, ettei kehittäjän tarvitse määritellä useaa laitetta erikseen aloittaessaan sovelluskehitystä ja täten hänen työnsä helpottuu. Sovelluksen tilasi Helsinki XR Center, joka on Metropolia Ammattikorkeakoulun luovien alojen yhteydessä toimiva keskus ja jonka tarkoitus on yhdistää virtuaalitodellisuuteen keskittyvää tutkimus-, startup- ja yritystoimintaa sekä antaa opiskelijoille verkostoitumismahdollisuuksia alalle. Insinöörityönä tehtyyn mallipohjasovellukseen rakennettiin laitteiden automaattinen määritys sekä visuaalinen näkymä, josta näkee virtuaalitodellisuuslasien ja ohjaimien tiedot, painetut painikkeet ja ohjaimien sijainnit visualisoituna, minkä lisäksi sovellus kerää kyseiset tiedot myös tekstitiedostoihin kehityksen helpottamiseksi. Insinöörityön lopputuloksena syntyi valmis sovellus, joka testeissä todettiin toimivaksi useilla yleisillä virtuaalitodellisuuslaitteilla. Työn on tarkoitus toimia ladattavana ja muokattavana mallipohjana kehittäjille heidän työnsä helpottamiseksi. Sovelluksen voi ladata esimerkiksi Unity-projektina ja alkaa rakentaa omaa sovellustaan tai peliään suoraan sen päälle. Työn kehitykseen käytettiin Unity-versiota 2020.3.11f1,OpenXR-liitännäisen versiota 1.2.2 ja XR Interaction Toolkit -liitännäisen versiota 1.0.0-pre.4. The subject of this thesis was to develop a virtual reality application template that will define settings for all the major VR devices to be used with it. The application will be used as a template for a VR game or software so that the developer will have less work with defining the settings for the devices. This application was created for Helsinki XR Center, a center located in the connection of Metropolia’s creative industries. The aim of Helsinki XR Center is to connect startup, research, and business activities related to virtual reality and to help students network with the industry. An automatic defining of the devices was built into the template as well as a visual scene that the developer can see the info about the VR headset and controllers. In addition, the application collects data about the usage of the devices into log text files. The final product of the engineering work was a finished application that was tested with several common virtual reality devices. The purpose of the project is to be a downloadable and editable template for VR developers. It is possible to download the application for example as a Unity project and to start to build a new application or game on top of it. The application was built using Unity version 2020.3.11f1, OpenXR plugin version 1.2.2, and XR Interaction Toolkit version 1.0.0-pre.4.

    VR technology is becoming more common every year and is used for many things, such as entertainment and education. Due to the popularity of VR technology, VR games are also expected to see an increase in player numbers over the next years. In this work, the engagement between PC and VR games was investigated. The study was carried out on a group of test subjects. Half of them did the test by playing the PC version, and the other half by playing the VR version. After the test, they completed a questionnaire, the results of which were compared with previous studies. The results showed that both in this study and in previous studies, subjects experienced loss of sense of time and forgot external stimuli when playing the VR version. The results suggest that is easier to enter the flow state in the VR version than in the PC version. VR-teknologia yleistyy vuosi vuodelta, ja sitä käytetään moniin asioihin kuten viihteen kuluttamiseen ja koulutukseen. Teknologian yleistymisen odotetaan lisäävän VR-pelien suosiota seuraavien vuosien aikana. Tässä työssä tutkittiin mukaansa tempautuvuutta PC- ja VR-pelien välillä. Tutkimus toteutettiin koehenkilöryhmälle. Puolet heistä teki testin pelaamalla PC-versiota, ja toinen puolisko pelaamalla VR-versiota. Testin jälkeen koehenkilöt täyttivät kyselyn, jonka tuloksia verrattiin aiempiin tutkimuksiin. Tuloksista kävi ilmi, että niin tässä työssä tehdyssä tutkimuksessa, kuin aiemmissa tutkimuksissa koehenkilöt kokivat ajantajunnan menettämistä sekä ulkoisten ärsykkeiden unohtamista VR-versiota pelatessa. Tuloksien perusteella vaikuttaa siltä, että flow-tilaan on helpompi päästä VR-versioissa kuin PC-versiossa.

    WiFi 7 on uusin markkinoille julkaistava WiFi standardi, joka lupaa sekä suuremman kaistanleveyden että merkittävästi pienemmät viiveajat. Nämä standardit eivät kuitenkaan määritä laitteiden tarkkaa toimintaa, joten markkinoille julkaistavissa laitteissa voi olla toiminnallisesti suuriakin eroja. Tässä työssä esitellään ohjelmistokehityksen sovelluksista createch ja suoratoisto sekä arvioidaan WiFi 7 laitteiden vaikutuksia kyseisten sovellusalueiden toimintaan. Työssä esitellään myös tutkimushetkellä markkinoilla olevien WiFi 7 laitteiden ominaisuuksia sekä arvioidaan niiden käyttöönoton kannattavuutta. Arvioinnin tukena käytetään laitteiden myyntihintaan suhteutettua kaistanleveyttä. Laitekohtaisessa arvioinnissa todettiin, että älypuhelimia lukuun ottamatta WiFi 7 laitteiden käyttöönotto on tutkimushetkellä kannattavaa. Eniten hyötyä WiFi 7 laitteista on henkilöille, joiden käyttökohteet vaativat reaalitaikaisuutta. Ohjelmistokehityksen sovelluksista erityisesti createch hyötyy WiFi 7 laitteista, koska se hyödyntää paljon VR-teknologiaa. WiFi 7 laitteiden merkitys tulee olemaan suuri myös tulevaisuudessa korkeamman kuvanlaadun sekä interaktiivisten sisältöjen yleistymisen seurauksena. WiFi 7 is the newest available WiFi standard, which promises larger bandwidth and lower latency than its predecessors. These standards do not strictly determine the attributes of a device, thus there can be a lot of performance differences between the devices released to the market. This work aims to evaluate the viability of currently available WiFi 7 devices and assess the effect of those devices on different applications of software engineering. To help with the evaluation, the device’s maximum bandwidth proportional to the sales price is calculated for each device. As a result of this work, it is determined that WiFi 7 devices, excluding smartphones, are viable at the time of this research. WiFi 7 devices are the most beneficial to users who regularly use real-time applications. Out of the software development applications reviewed in this work, createch benefited the most due to the high usage of VR technology. The importance of WiFi 7 devices is expected to grow as larger screen resolutions and interactive content become more common.
