    Abstract 35Cl nuclear quadrupolar resonance linewidth and spin-lattice relaxation time and 19F nuclear magnetic resonance lineshape and spin-lattice relaxation time measurements are reported for polycrystalline trichlorofluoromethane over the temperature range 80 to 160 K. The possibility of lattice vacancies as a mechanism for the 35Cl line broadening and the nuclear relaxation is discussed and rejected. It is concluded that the dominant motional mechanism above 120 K is the reorientation of the molecules around the threefold axis characterized by an activation energy of 27.2 kJ mol−1. A two-exponential analysis of the 19F nonexponential relaxation gives almost the same activation energy. The 19F lineshape shows a structure suggesting that the molecules arrange themselves in a very different way than they do in related CYX3 compounds.

    AbstractViability emerged as a contentious political term in post‐Katrina New Orleans. While initial expert‐led proposals defined neighborhood viability in terms of topography, community‐based groups emphasized the cultural and historical aspects that defined neighborhoods as viable. This analysis focuses on the politics of neighborhood viability with regarding to a specific neighborhood, Village de l'Est, well known for its sizeable Vietnamese population. Community leaders effectively employed cultural discourses to increase the visibility of the neighborhood and make claims on recovery dollars. One of these proposals was for an urban farm. The case‐study presented here focuses on how the proposal made evident how claims of viability often generated generated conflicting visions of neighborhoods in pre‐ and post‐Katrina New Orleans. Abstract Presently used artificial light sources are inadequate for testing solar cells for space applications. Design parameters and calibration procedures for a light source that closely simulates solar radiation in space have been determined. The accuracy of the presently used solar simulator and its recent applications are discussed.

    As the world pays more and more attention to energy conservation and environmental protection, the ground-source heat pump system has been rapidly popularized in China. The machine learning-based automatic control technology can help to improve the energy efficiency of the ground-source heat pump system. However, the quality of the measured data is often not clean enough to train the machine learning algorithms. On the other hand, building energy simulation can generate clean data to support machine learning-based control techniques. This study presents a framework to generate EnergyPlus Functional Mockup Units (FMUs) for co-simulating with Python environment. A case study was presented to create an EnergyPlus FMU of an office building with a ground-source heat pump system in Beijing. The basic EnergyPlus model was generated using the Commercial Building Energy Saver developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and modified to include the ground-source heat pump system. The model was calibrated using the measured sub-metering data to meet the ASHRAE 14 requirement. To support the machine learning technique, an EnergyPlus FMU was developed to co-simulate with Python environment. EnergyPlus outputs the current room and system status parameters to Python and obtains the control signals from Python. In the future, we will work with machine learning experts to train and evaluate their control algorithms using the developed co-simulation platform.

    Authors: Brajendra Mishra;

    Materials are nonrenewal resources that are created through an “unnatural” process. In addition to resource recovery and recycling of valuable materials to achieve sustainability, simple methods to extend the life of materials enhance the resource productivity. The natural process of corrosion tries to reverse the process of material extraction causing enormous loss of energy and impacts the environment. Corrosion costs the U.S. over $300 billion per year and also produces significant safety hazards. Corrosion control is, therefore, important to enhance the life of engineering metals and materials, which is also the focus of many government regulatory agencies such as the EPA, DOT, and OPS. Corrosion protection technology utilizes metallurgy, material chemistry, and physics as well as electricity to prevent or control corrosion degradation and therefore, the education of corrosion science and engineering is directly linked to improving material life. Education in corrosion control applies these sciences to control the chemical and mechanical aspects that are involved in the deterioration of properties. This paper will address the educational aspects of corrosion technology that allow resource productivity improvement of materials.

    Abstract Innovative all solid state dye-sensitized photovoltaic micro-wires (DSPMs) have been developed using low-cost, thermally-stable and highly conductive titanium micro-wires and carbon nanotubes yarns (CNYs). Highly inter-aligned, ultrastrong and flexible CNYs with excellent electrical conductivity, mechanical integrity and catalytic property have been successfully used as counter electrodes (CEs). The open circuit voltage and current density of the DSPMs can remarkably be improved through optimizing the numbers of CNYs and CNYs–TiO2 interface. Optimizing the number of CNYs in the CEs yields a photoconversion efficiency of 0.1959% with prolonged-time stability. The DSPMs were made without expensive transparent conductive oxides (TCOs), liquid electrolytes and glass or plastic cladding. The DSPMs are able to transport photocurrent over a significant distance using a simple cell configuration with a wide range of flexibility (10–180°). These cells are capable of efficiently harvesting incident photon from any direction and generate photocurrent with an efficient reproducibility throughout a large number of illumination on–off cycles.

  • Low-energy (E≤1 eV) state-changing collisions of excited atom, particularly the low-Rydberg (n 3) propensity rule holds. The explanation lies in the ordering of the relevant adiabatic energy curves and the nature of the coupling. The Stueckelberg interference oscillations are found in the inelastic cross sections. The role of the nonspherical target state before the collision is discussed. The total thermal energy quenching rates are calculated and compared with the experiment results. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Int J Quant Chem 80: 1011–1023, 2000

    Abstract— A convenient formula has been derived for the calculation of Forster transfer rates between chlorophyll a molecules. The formula is applicable over limited ranges of absorption maxima positions, Stokes' shifts, solvents, relative orientations and intermolecular distances. The limitations on the applicability of the Forster transfer model are discussed. Finally, some implications for in vivo energy transfer are considered.

    This case highlights Indian Tobacco Corporation (ITC)’s journey from being a pure leaf tobacco selling company to a reputed conglomerate with popular brands in diversified areas. ITC’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability activities taking a turning point with the company taking an immense interest in integrating societal problems in its company’s policies and strategies. These transformations can be seen in almost all the business divisions of ITC. Mangaldeep division, an incense stick division is not an exception to this change. However, the authors are trying to analyze the activities of ITC–Mangaldeep Business unit from different perspectives such as CSR, sustainability and shared value initiatives. Considering the resource constraint and the demand to meet the societal needs, it will be quite interesting to know how both these two challenges are met by a conglomerate like ITC simultaneously in the days to come. The case uses both primary and secondary sources of information to develop this teaching case.

    Authors: Brajendra Mishra;
