    Wanderungsbewegungen gehören zu den zentralen Gegenständen historischer Forschung und Darstellung. Sie fungieren als historische Wegmarken oder Epochenschwellen und spielen eine zentrale Rolle bei der (Trans-) Formation von Räumen und kollektiven Identitäten. Dabei weisen moderne wissenschaftliche Darstellungen von Wanderungsbewegungen aus unterschiedlichen Kontexten, Zeiten und Räumen erstaunliche inhaltliche Ähnlichkeiten und analoge Erzählmuster auf, die sich keineswegs durch vermeintliche Parallelen in den dargestellten Ereignissen erklären lassen. Vielmehr scheinen diese ihren Hintergrund in der Art und Weise zu haben, wie Migrationen dargestellt und erzählt werden. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes decken ein breites Spektrum vornehmlich altertumswissenschaftlicher Disziplinen ab und vermögen zu zeigen, dass noch die jüngere Wanderungshistoriographie tradierten Erzählmustern folgt, die teilweise bis in die Antike zurückreichen. Migrations make for ideal storytelling. They play a central role in the thematization of cultural change, the (trans)formation of space, and the constitution of identities, among other areas. Building on narratological approaches to the history of historiography in historical scholarship, we ask how migration stories are told and what specific narrative patterns find a use in ancient studies. After introducing the central concept of historiographic migration narratives, we outline the empirical-reconstructive constitution of collective identities and their correlations with spaces. We then present the contributions in the volume, organized by theme, to conclusively show further prospects for the narratological study of migration historiographies.

    Today, Digital Humanities are viewed from different perspectives: as an academic subject or discipline with a distinct agenda; as a bundle of research methods; as a communication, information and publication infrastructure; as a practice that changes our epistemologies; or simply as a label to take part in funding programmes. Debates arise whether all forms of digitization of our research and teaching can be considered Digital Humanities (which would mean that we are all digital humanists), or whether only systematic and self-reflexive research approaches using expert software that advance our research methodologies should count as Digital Humanities – and where to draw the dividing line between these two areas. Obviously, there is a wide range of qualified answers to this question, and consensus between different disciplines and countries varies widely. With the process of institutionalization underway or well advanced in numerous European countries, we – the editors of the German information platform for historians H-Soz-Kult – think that a review and evaluation of the evolution of Digital Humanities in Europe is a timely task.

    Im digitalen Zeitalter verschwimmen die institutionellen Grenzen innerhalb der Kulturlandschaft. Umso gewinnbringender wäre es, innerhalb der Kultureinrichtungen gemeinsame Handlungsfelder zu definieren und von etablierten Prozessen und vorhandenen Infrastrukturen zu profitieren. Worin bestehen die zentralen Probleme der bisher erst zaghaften Kooperation? Wie wirken sich unterschiedliche Vorstellungen über den relativ offenen Begriff Filmerbe auf die internen Strategien aus? Könnten Bibliotheken hier in bestimmten Bereichen eine leitende Rolle übernehmen, um Filmarchive zu unterstützen, ihre Bestände zu vernetzen, archivieren und durch weitere Beständen zu kontextualisieren? Ich möchte versuchen aufzuschlüsseln, welche strukturellen Besonderheiten der einzelnen Einrichtungen den Prozess stärken könnten.

    Diese Einleitung zu Innovationen in vormodernen Gesellschaften gibt eine Übersicht über die grundsätzlichen Fragen, die in den folgenden Einzelbeiträgen angesprochen werden. Deutlich wird, dass die Bewertung von Innovationen in unterschiedlichen Kulturen stark variierte. Die meisten der hier versammelten Artikel deuten darauf hin, dass Innovationen in nicht-modernen Gesellschaftszusammenhängen nur dann erfolgreich waren, wenn sie mit großer Sorgfalt in existierende kulturelle Traditionen eingeschrieben wurden. This introduction to a set of papers on innovations in ancient societies discusses an overview of crucial issues raised in the collected contributions. It is evident that the esteem for innovations in different societies was highly uneven. Most of the contributions collected here argue that in non-modern circumstances, innovations had to be inserted into existing cultural traditions with utmost care to be successful.

    The location of burial places within the sepulchral practice of the Neapolitan nobility of the 14th and 15th centuries throw light upon the structuring of the urban space of the city. Besides the big churches of the mendicant orders in the centre of Naples, the churches of Santa Chiara, San Giovanni a Carbonara and Santa Maria di Monteoliveto, which hosted the tombs of the dynasties, were used despite their peripheral location as prestigious burial places. This paper examines exemplarily the involvement of the Neapolitan nobleman in the decoration of the two dynastic sepulchral churches of Santa Chiara (Anjou) and Santa Maria di Monteoliveto (Aragon). Both churches reveal a continuity in the sepulchral practice of the Neapolitan nobility because of their status as “royal churches”. This continuity was maintained through dynastic crises across the 14th and 15th centuries. Nevertheless, there was a formal and stylistic development in the tomb monuments of both churches. Santa Chiara houses the Gothic types that were typical for the 14th and the early 15th century, while in Santa Maria di Monteoliveto a variety of innovative types of the early Renaissance can be found.

    Thrace, with its heterogeneous population; proximity to the Greek civilisation; and the long-lasting dominance of the Persians, Macedonians, and Romans that has impacted culture, language, and political institutions of this historical landscape, is a unique testing ground for studying regionalism and identity in antiquity. This book explores these topics through the lens of coinage, numismatic iconography, and coin circulation. Including a series of case studies and theoretical chapters, this volume does not offer a conclusive solution to all of the questions that emerge. Yet the articles presented here, both in their entirety and individually, show the intricacy and manifoldness of the problem and outline prospects for further research.

    Der Beitrag behandelt die Einführung der Eisentechnologie im nördlichen Mitteleuropa und diskutiert zwei wesentliche Aspekte. Zum einen wird der Frage nachgegangen, in wie weit es heute schon möglich ist, den Verlauf des Einführungsprozesses zu rekonstruieren, und wie dieser ausgesehen haben könnte. Zum anderen wird der Einführungsprozess auf intendierte und nicht intendierte Folgen hin untersucht. Welche ‚Kollateral-Prozesse‘ begleiten die Einführung, inwieweit ermöglichen sie die Innovation, gehen Hand in Hand mit ihr oder werden durch die Innovation angestoßen und hervorgerufen? This paper deals with the introduction of iron technology in Northern Central Europe and discusses two major aspects. On the one hand, it asks to what extent we are able to trace the process of the introduction of iron and how it might have taken place. On the other hand, intended and unintended consequences of the introduction of this new technology are investigated. Can we spot ‘collateral processes’ that accompany the introduction of iron? To what extent do these processes enable such innovation, are an integral part of it, or are triggered by it?

    Kommensalität – das gemeinsame Essen und Trinken in einem gemeinsamen physischen und sozialen Rahmen – spielt eine fundamentale Rolle im menschlichen Alltagsleben. Diese zentrale Bedeutung macht Kommensalität zu einem besonders wichtigen Ausgangspunkt für die Erforschung sozialer Beziehungen und politischer Mechanismen. Um die in jüngster Zeit in der Archäologie und verwandten Disziplinen zu beobachtende einseitige Fokussierung auf Feste und andere besondere kommensale Anlässe zu relativieren, sollte der Blick auf Alltagskommensalität gerichtet werden, in deren Rahmen sich entscheidende Prozesse sozialer Reproduktion abspielen. Ich werde zwei besondere Formen von kommensalen Praktiken hervorheben, Gastfreundschat und die Zuteilung von bzw. Versorgung mit Lebensmitteln (“provisioning”), die in vielen Facetten in den Beiträgen dieses Bandes diskutiert werden. Schließlich erörtere ich den in der Archäologie weitgehend vernachlässigten Forschungsbereich Hunger und dessen Implikationen für die Nutzung von Kommensalität als Machtinstrument. The centrality of commensality – eating and drinking together in a common physical and social setting – in people’s everyday lives makes it a particularly important location from which to explore social relations and the working of politics. The recent focus in archaeology and related disciplines on feasting and other special commensal occasions needs to be balanced by attention to daily commensality, in which crucial elements of social reproduction take place. I highlight two particular forms of commensal practices, hospitality and provisioning, that resonate with many of the cases discussed in the papers in this volume. Finally, I point to a largely neglected area of study in archaeology, that of hunger and its implications for the politics of commensality.

    Wanderungsbewegungen gehören zu den zentralen Gegenständen historischer Forschung und Darstellung. Sie fungieren als historische Wegmarken oder Epochenschwellen und spielen eine zentrale Rolle bei der (Trans-) Formation von Räumen und kollektiven Identitäten. Dabei weisen moderne wissenschaftliche Darstellungen von Wanderungsbewegungen aus unterschiedlichen Kontexten, Zeiten und Räumen erstaunliche inhaltliche Ähnlichkeiten und analoge Erzählmuster auf, die sich keineswegs durch vermeintliche Parallelen in den dargestellten Ereignissen erklären lassen. Vielmehr scheinen diese ihren Hintergrund in der Art und Weise zu haben, wie Migrationen dargestellt und erzählt werden. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes decken ein breites Spektrum vornehmlich altertumswissenschaftlicher Disziplinen ab und vermögen zu zeigen, dass noch die jüngere Wanderungshistoriographie tradierten Erzählmustern folgt, die teilweise bis in die Antike zurückreichen. Migrations make for ideal storytelling. They play a central role in the thematization of cultural change, the (trans)formation of space, and the constitution of identities, among other areas. Building on narratological approaches to the history of historiography in historical scholarship, we ask how migration stories are told and what specific narrative patterns find a use in ancient studies. After introducing the central concept of historiographic migration narratives, we outline the empirical-reconstructive constitution of collective identities and their correlations with spaces. We then present the contributions in the volume, organized by theme, to conclusively show further prospects for the narratological study of migration historiographies.

    Today, Digital Humanities are viewed from different perspectives: as an academic subject or discipline with a distinct agenda; as a bundle of research methods; as a communication, information and publication infrastructure; as a practice that changes our epistemologies; or simply as a label to take part in funding programmes. Debates arise whether all forms of digitization of our research and teaching can be considered Digital Humanities (which would mean that we are all digital humanists), or whether only systematic and self-reflexive research approaches using expert software that advance our research methodologies should count as Digital Humanities – and where to draw the dividing line between these two areas. Obviously, there is a wide range of qualified answers to this question, and consensus between different disciplines and countries varies widely. With the process of institutionalization underway or well advanced in numerous European countries, we – the editors of the German information platform for historians H-Soz-Kult – think that a review and evaluation of the evolution of Digital Humanities in Europe is a timely task.

Worin bestehen die zentralen Probleme der bisher erst zaghaften Kooperation? Wie wirken sich unterschiedliche Vorstellungen über den relativ offenen Begriff Filmerbe auf die internen Strategien aus?     Diese Einleitung zu Innovationen in vormodernen Gesellschaften gibt eine Übersicht über die grundsätzlichen Fragen, die in den folgenden Einzelbeiträgen angesprochen werden. Deutlich wird, dass die Bewertung von Innovationen in unterschiedlichen Kulturen stark variierte. Die meisten der hier versammelten Artikel deuten darauf hin, dass Innovationen in nicht-modernen Gesellschaftszusammenhängen nur dann erfolgreich waren, wenn sie mit großer Sorgfalt in existierende kulturelle Traditionen eingeschrieben wurden. This introduction to a set of papers on innovations in ancient societies discusses an overview of crucial issues raised in the collected contributions. It is evident that the esteem for innovations in different societies was highly uneven. Most of the contributions collected here argue that in non-modern circumstances, innovations had to be inserted into existing cultural traditions with utmost care to be successful.

    The location of burial places within the sepulchral practice of the Neapolitan nobility of the 14th and 15th centuries throw light upon the structuring of the urban space of the city. Besides the big churches of the mendicant orders in the centre of Naples, the churches of Santa Chiara, San Giovanni a Carbonara and Santa Maria di Monteoliveto, which hosted the tombs of the dynasties, were used despite their peripheral location as prestigious burial places. This paper examines exemplarily the involvement of the Neapolitan nobleman in the decoration of the two dynastic sepulchral churches of Santa Chiara (Anjou) and Santa Maria di Monteoliveto (Aragon). Both churches reveal a continuity in the sepulchral practice of the Neapolitan nobility because of their status as “royal churches”. This continuity was maintained through dynastic crises across the 14th and 15th centuries. Nevertheless, there was a formal and stylistic development in the tomb monuments of both churches. Santa Chiara houses the Gothic types that were typical for the 14th and the early 15th century, while in Santa Maria di Monteoliveto a variety of innovative types of the early Renaissance can be found.
