The Torah contains two groundbreaking sagas of wanderings from the early history of Israel. The two stories were combined into the Kleines geschichtliches Credo Deut. 26:5–9 (Gerhard von Rad), which Israelites and Judeans were to recite at their harvest festival when offering the fruit of the land to their God. The surviving accounts of the wanderings of the patriarchs of Israel from the 6th – 5th c. BC in the Book of Genesis are not to be understood today as historical reflections, but rather as stories from a later period about landholding and land claims. Nevertheless, it may be the case that traditions from the proto-Israeli/Judean settlement period have been preserved in the stories of the patriarchs. Accordingly, appropriate emphasis is placed on the predominant cultural influence from the North, on the nearness of the kingdoms of Eastern Jordan (Jacob-Esau story circle; Abraham-Lot story circle), the establishment of common bonds among Israeli tribes (regal period) and the dissociation from overly powerful seafaring nations and Phoenicians, as well as from the Canaanites dwelling in Shfela and in the coastal plains.

Albeit several studies addressed the monetary value of informal care, differences in the relationship between caregivers and recipients have often been ignored. We report on a profound and formerly unobserved distinction between care in the household and non-household care for a family member or in a voluntary framework. According to our results caregivers within the household perceive care as a burden and a positive shadow price arises. By contrast in the family but non-household context - and especially in the voluntary case - care is (at least partly) understood as an enriching experience which extends well-being and leads to negative shadow prices. This distinction calls a marketized view of informal care into question and may contribute to explaining the limitations of monetary incentive policies to encourage informal care.

The supply and demand framework of Katz and Murphy (1992) provides new evidence on the source of changes in socially insured full-time and part-time employment in years preceding and following the implementation of the landmark Hartz reforms in Germany. Our findings are consistent with a stable demand for labor, especially in western Germany, implying that supply factors were decisive for the evolution of the labor market after 2003. The correlation of changes in wages and labor force participation is also consistent with a positive labor supply shock at a given working-age population. We also show that part-time employment played a decisive role in the post-2003 improvement of the German labor market.

Archaeologists working in Northwestern Morocco (former Roman province of Mauritania Tingitania) were often struck by the ubiquitous association of pre-Islamic archaeological sites and Muslim shrines. Although several studies have been devoted to maraboutism as a form of popular piety in Morocco, Muslim shrines found at archaeological sites were rarely if ever studied in connection to their archaeological context. This research 1) revisits saints and sainthood in Morocco, and more importantly, 2) examines six case studies in Northwestern Morocco (Lixus, Zilil, Thamusida, Chella, Banasa and Hajar al-Nasr) in order to shed light on how the active devotional layer, i.e. the shrines, relates spatially and architecturally to the archaeological remains beneath and around them.
