ESCAPE (European Science Cluster of Astronomy and Particle physics ESFRI research infrastructures) is a project to set up a cluster of ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) facilities for astronomy, astroparticle and particle physics to face the challenges emerging through the modern multi-disciplinary data driven science. One of the main goal of ESCAPE is the building of ESAP (ESFRI Science Analysis Platform), a science platform for the analysis of open access data available through the EOSC (European Open Science Cloud) environment. ESAP will allow EOSC researchers to identify and stage existing data collections for analysis, share data, share and run scientific workflows. For many of the concerned ESFRIs and RIs, the data scales involved require significant computational resources (storage and compute) to support processing and analysis. The EOSC-ESFRI science platform therefore must implement appropriate interfaces to an underlying HPC (High Performance Computing) or HTC (High Throughput Computing) infrastructure to take advantage of it. This poster describes the analysis done to identify the main requirements for the implementation of the interfaces enabling the ESAP data access and computation resources integration in HPC and HTC computation infrastructures in terms of authentication and authorization policies, data management, workflow deployment and run. Will appear in Proceedings ADASSXXX ASP Conference Series

ESCAPE (European Science Cluster of Astronomy & Particle physics ESFRI research infrastructures) addresses the Open Science challenges shared by ESFRI facilities (SKA, CTA, KM3Net, EST, ELT, HL- LHC, FAIR) as well as other pan-European research infrastructures (CERN, ESO, JIVE) in astronomy and particle physics. ESCAPE actions are focused on developing solutions for the large data sets handled by the ESFRI facilities. These solutions shall: i) connect ESFRI projects to EOSC ensuring integration of data and tools; ii) foster common approaches to implement open-data stewardship; iii) establish interoperability within EOSC as an integrated multi-messenger facility for fundamental science. To accomplish these objectives ESCAPE aims to unite astrophysics and particle physics communities with proven expertise in computing and data management by setting up a data infrastructure beyond the current state-of-the-art in support of the FAIR principles. These joint efforts are expected result into a data-lake infrastructure as cloud open-science analysis facility linked with the EOSC. ESCAPE supports already existing infrastructure such as astronomy Virtual Observatory to connect with the EOSC. With the commitment from various ESFRI projects in the cluster, ESCAPE will develop and integrate the EOSC catalogue with a dedicated catalogue of open source analysis software. This catalogue will provide researchers across the disciplines with new software tools and services developed by astronomy and particle physics community. Through this catalogue ESCAPE will strive to cater researchers with consistent access to an integrated open- science platform for data-analysis workflows. As a result, a large community “foundation” approach for cross-fertilization and continuous development will be strengthened. ESCAPE has the ambition to be a flagship for scientific and societal impact that the EOSC can deliver.

ESCAPE (European Science Cluster of Astronomy & Particle physics ESFRI research infrastructures) is a project funded by the by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program that brings together astronomy, astroparticle and particle physics communities to address the challenges of open science and long-term data usability. I will give an overview of the project and I will present the activities being implemented for integrating the ESFRI facilities and other partner research infrastructures into the European Open Science Cloud through the Virtual Observatory framework. Finally, I will provide a notebook tutorial to demonstrate the interoperability of the Multi Order Coverage (MOC) map, an efficient data structure for describing and manipulating sky coverages of astronomical surveys, recently approved as IVOA standard and extended within ESCAPE to support both spatial and temporal coverages for multi-wavelength a multi-messenger observations. The astronomy, astroparticle and particle physics communities are brought together through the ESCAPE (European Science Cluster of Astronomy and Particle Physics ESFRI research infrastructures) project to create a cluster focused on common issues in data-driven research. Among the ESCAPE work packages, the OSSR (ESCAPE Open-source Scientific Software and Service Repository) is a curated, long-term, open-access repository that makes it possible for scientists to exchange software and services and promote open science. It has been developed on top of a Zenodo community, connected to other services. A Python library, the eOSSR, has been developed to take care of the interactivity between Zenodo, services and OSSR users, allowing an automated handling of the OSSR records. In this work, we present the eOSSR, its main functionalities and how it's been used in the ESCAPE context to ease the publication of scientific software, analysis, and datasets by researchers

AbstractMajor European Union-funded research infrastructure and open science projects have traditionally included dissemination work, for mostly one-way communication of the research activities. Here, we present and review our radical re-envisioning of this work, by directly engaging citizen science volunteers into the research. We summarise the citizen science in the Horizon-funded projects ASTERICS (Astronomy ESFRI and Research Infrastructure Clusters) and ESCAPE (European Science Cluster of Astronomy and Particle Physics ESFRI Research Infrastructures), engaging hundreds of thousands of volunteers in providing millions of data mining classifications. Not only does this have enormously more scientific and societal impact than conventional dissemination, but it facilitates the direct research involvement of what is often arguably the most neglected stakeholder group in Horizon projects, the science-inclined public. We conclude with recommendations and opportunities for deploying crowdsourced data mining in the physical sciences, noting that the primary goal is always the fundamental research question; if public engagement is the primary goal to optimise, then other, more targeted approaches may be more effective.
